2 Samuel 21:1 (NIV) New International Version

1 During the reign of David, there was a famine for three successive years; so David sought the face of the LORD. The LORD said, "It is on account of Saul and his blood-stained house; it is because he put the Gibeonites to death."
2 The king summoned the Gibeonites and spoke to them. (Now the Gibeonites were not a part of Israel but were survivors of the Amorites; the Israelites had sworn to spare them, but Saul in his zeal for Israel and Judah had tried to annihilate them.)
3 David asked the Gibeonites, "What shall I do for you? How shall I make amends so that you will bless the LORD's inheritance?"
4 The Gibeonites answered him, "We have no right to demand silver or gold from Saul or his family, nor do we have the right to put anyone in Israel to death." "What do you want me to do for you?" David asked.
5 They answered the king, "As for the man who destroyed us and plotted against us so that we have been decimated and have no place anywhere in Israel,
6 let seven of his male descendants be given to us to be killed and exposed before the LORD at Gibeah of Saul--the LORD's chosen one." So the king said, "I will give them to you."
7 The king spared Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, because of the oath before the LORD between David and Jonathan son of Saul.
8 But the king took Armoni and Mephibosheth, the two sons of Aiah's daughter Rizpah, whom she had borne to Saul, together with the five sons of Saul's daughter Merab, whom she had borne to Adriel son of Barzillai the Meholathite.
9 He handed them over to the Gibeonites, who killed and exposed them on a hill before the LORD. All seven of them fell together; they were put to death during the first days of harvest, just as the barley harvest was beginning.
10 Rizpah daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it out for herself on a rock. From the beginning of the harvest till the rain poured down from the heavens on the bodies, she did not let the birds of the air touch them by day or the wild animals by night.
11 When David was told what Aiah's daughter Rizpah, Saul's concubine, had done,
12 he went and took the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from the citizens of Jabesh Gilead. (They had taken them secretly from the public square at Beth Shan, where the Philistines had hung them after they struck Saul down on Gilboa.)
13 David brought the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan from there, and the bones of those who had been killed and exposed were gathered up.
14 They buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the tomb of Saul's father Kish, at Zela in Benjamin, and did everything the king commanded. After that, God answered prayer on behalf of the land.
15 Once again there was a battle between the Philistines and Israel. David went down with his men to fight against the Philistines, and he became exhausted.
16 And Ishbi-Benob, one of the descendants of Rapha, whose bronze spearhead weighed three hundred shekels and who was armed with a new sword, said he would kill David.
17 But Abishai son of Zeruiah came to David's rescue; he struck the Philistine down and killed him. Then David's men swore to him, saying, "Never again will you go out with us to battle, so that the lamp of Israel will not be extinguished."
18 In the course of time, there was another battle with the Philistines, at Gob. At that time Sibbecai the Hushathite killed Saph, one of the descendants of Rapha.
19 In another battle with the Philistines at Gob, Elhanan son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, who had a spear with a shaft like a weaver's rod.
20 In still another battle, which took place at Gath, there was a huge man with six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot-- twenty-four in all. He also was descended from Rapha.
21 When he taunted Israel, Jonathan son of Shimeah, David's brother, killed him.
22 These four were descendants of Rapha in Gath, and they fell at the hands of David and his men.

2 And the king H4428 D-NMS called H7121 W-VQY3MS the Gibeonites H1393 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them ; (now the Gibeonites H1393 were not H3808 NADV of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , but H518 PART of the remnant H3499 of the Amorites H567 D-TMS ; and the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 had sworn H7650 unto them : and Saul H7586 sought H1245 to slay H5221 them in his zeal H7065 to the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and Judah H3063 . )
3 Wherefore David H1732 MMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the Gibeonites H1393 , What H4100 IGAT shall I do H6213 for you ? and wherewith H4100 shall I make the atonement H3722 , that ye may bless H1288 the inheritance H5159 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS ?
4 And the Gibeonites H1393 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , We will have no H369 ADV silver H3701 NMS nor gold H2091 of H5973 PREP Saul H7586 , nor of H5973 his house H1004 NMS-3MS ; neither H369 W-ADV for us shalt thou kill H4191 any man H376 NMS in Israel H3478 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IGAT ye H859 PPRO-2MS shall say H559 W-VQY3MS , that will I do H6213 for you .
5 And they answered H559 the king H4428 D-NMS , The man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO consumed H3615 us , and that H834 RPRO devised H1819 against us that we should be destroyed H8045 from remaining H3320 in any H3605 B-CMS of the coasts H1366 of Israel H3478 LMS ,
6 Let seven H7651 NUM-MS men H376 NMP of his sons H1121 be delivered H5414 unto us , and we will hang H3363 them up unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS in Gibeah H1390 of Saul H7586 , whom the LORD H3068 EDS did choose H972 . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS will give H5414 them .
7 But the king H4428 D-NMS spared H2550 Mephibosheth H4648 , the son H1121 of Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 of Saul H7586 , because H5921 PREP of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s oath H7621 that H834 RPRO was between H996 PREP them , between H996 PREP David H1732 MMS and Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 of Saul H7586 .
8 But the king H4428 D-NMS took H3947 W-VQY3MS the two H8147 ONUM sons H1121 of Rizpah H7532 the daughter H1323 of Aiah H345 , whom H834 RPRO she bore H3205 unto Saul H7586 , Armoni H764 and Mephibosheth H4648 ; and the five H2568 sons H1121 of Michal H4324 the daughter H1323 CFS of Saul H7586 , whom H834 RPRO she brought up H3205 for Adriel H5741 the son H1121 of Barzillai H1271 the Meholathite H4259 :
9 And he delivered H5414 them into the hands H3027 B-CFS of the Gibeonites H1393 , and they hanged H3363 them in the hill H2022 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS : and they fell H5307 W-VQY3MP all seven H7651 together H3162 ADV , and were put to death H4191 in the days H3117 B-CMP of harvest H7105 NMS , in the first H7223 days , in the beginning H8462 of barley H8184 harvest H7105 .
10 And Rizpah H7532 the daughter H1323 of Aiah H345 took H3947 W-VQY3FS sackcloth H8242 , and spread H5186 it for her upon H413 PREP the rock H6697 , from the beginning H8462 of harvest H7105 NMS until H5704 PREP water H4325 OMD dropped H5413 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them out of H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-AMP , and suffered H5414 neither H3808 W-NPAR the birds H5775 NMS of the air H8064 D-NMD to rest H5117 on H5921 PREP-3MP them by day H3119 ADV , nor the beasts H2416 CFS of the field H7704 D-NMS by night H3915 NMS .
11 And it was told H5046 David H1732 L-NAME what H834 RPRO Rizpah H7532 the daughter H1323 of Aiah H345 , the concubine H6370 of Saul H7586 , had done H6213 VQQ3MS .
12 And David H1732 MMS went H1980 W-VQY3MS and took H3947 W-VQY3MS the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and the bones H6106 of Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 CMS-3MS from the men H1167 CMP of Jabesh H3003 - gilead , which H834 RPRO had stolen H1589 them from the street H7339 of Beth H1052 - shan , where H834 RPRO the Philistines H6430 had hanged H8511 them , when H3117 B-NMS the Philistines H6430 TMS had slain H5221 VHFC Saul H7586 in Gilboa H1533 :
13 And he brought up H5927 W-VHY3MS from thence H8033 M-ADV the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and the bones H6106 of Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 CMS-3MS ; and they gathered H622 the bones H6106 of them that were hanged H3363 .
14 And the bones H6106 of Saul H7586 and Jonathan H3083 his son H1121 CMS-3MS buried H6912 they in the country H776 B-GFS of Benjamin H1144 in Zelah H6762 , in the sepulcher H6913 of Kish H7027 his father H1 CMS-3MS : and they performed H6213 W-EMS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS . And after that PREP God H430 EDP was entreated H6279 for the land H776 LD-NFS .
15 Moreover the Philistines H6430 had H1961 W-VQY3FS yet war H4421 NFS again with H854 PREP Israel H3478 ; and David H1732 MMS went down H3381 W-VQY3MS , and his servants H5650 W-CMS-3MS with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and fought against H3898 the Philistines H6430 TMS : and David H1732 waxed faint H5774 .
16 And Ishbibenob H3430 , which H834 RPRO was of the sons H3211 of the giant H7498 , the weight H4948 of whose spear H7013 weighed three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP shekels of brass H5178 CFS in weight H4948 , he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS being girded H2296 with a new H2319 sword , thought H559 W-VQY3MS to have slain H5221 L-VHFC David H1732 .
17 But Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 succored H5826 him , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the Philistine H6430 , and killed H4191 him . Then H227 ADV the men H376 CMP of David H1732 swore H7650 unto him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thou shalt go H3318 no H3808 NADV more H5750 ADV out with us to battle H4421 , that thou quench H3518 not H3808 W-NADV the light H5216 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
18 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS after H310 PREP this H3651 ADV , that there was H1961 W-VPY3MS again H5750 ADV a battle H4421 with H5973 PREP the Philistines H6430 TMS at Gob H1359 : then H227 ADV Sibbechai H5444 the Hushathite H2843 slew H5221 Saph H5593 , which H834 RPRO was of the sons H3211 of the giant H7498 .
19 And there was H1961 W-VQY3FS again H5750 ADV a battle H4421 in Gob H1359 with H5973 PREP the Philistines H6430 TMS , where Elhanan H445 the son H1121 of Jaare H3296 - oregim , a Bethlehemite H1022 , slew H5221 W-VHY3MS the brother of Goliath H1555 the Gittite H1663 , the staff H6086 W-NMS of whose spear H2595 was like a weaver H707 \'s beam H4500 .
20 And there was H1961 W-VQY3FS yet H5750 ADV a battle H4421 NFS in Gath H1661 , where was H1961 W-VQY3MS a man H376 NMS of great stature H4055 , that had on every hand H3027 CFD-3MS six H8337 RFS fingers H676 , and on every foot H7272 six H8337 toes H676 , four H702 W-BFS and twenty H6242 in number H4557 NMS ; and he H1931 PPRO-3MS also H1571 W-CONJ was born H3205 VWQ3MS to the giant H7498 .
21 And when he defied H2778 Israel H3478 , Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 of Shimea H8092 the brother H251 CMS of David H1732 slew H5221 him .
22 These H428 PMP four H702 were born H3205 VWQ3MP to the giant H7498 in Gath H1661 , and fell H5307 W-VQY3MP by the hand H3027 of David H1732 MMS , and by the hand H3027 of his servants H5650 .
