2 Samuel 7 (NIV) New International Version

1 After the king was settled in his palace and the LORD had given him rest from all his enemies around him,
2 he said to Nathan the prophet, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent."
3 Nathan replied to the king, "Whatever you have in mind, go ahead and do it, for the LORD is with you."
4 That night the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying:
5 "Go and tell my servant David,`This is what the LORD says: Are you the one to build me a house to dwell in?
6 I have not dwelt in a house from the day I brought the Israelites up out of Egypt to this day. I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.
7 Wherever I have moved with all the Israelites, did I ever say to any of their rulers whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"'
8 "Now then, tell my servant David,`This is what the LORD Almighty says: I took you from the pasture and from following the flock to be ruler over my people Israel.
9 I have been with you wherever you have gone, and I have cut off all your enemies from before you. Now I will make your name great, like the names of the greatest men of the earth.
10 And I will provide a place for my people Israel and will plant them so that they can have a home of their own and no longer be disturbed. Wicked people shall not oppress them any more, as they did at the beginning
11 and have done ever since the time I appointed leaders over my people Israel. I will also give you rest from all your enemies. "`The LORD declares to you that the LORD himself will establish a house for you:
12 When your days are over and you rest with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring to succeed you, who will come from your own body, and I will establish his kingdom.
13 He is the one who will build a house for my Name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
14 I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men.
15 But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you.
16 Your house and your kingdom shall endure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.'"
17 Nathan reported to David all the words of this entire revelation.
18 Then King David went in and sat before the LORD, and he said: "Who am I, O Sovereign LORD, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?
19 And as if this were not enough in your sight, O Sovereign LORD, you have also spoken about the future of the house of your servant. Is this your usual way of dealing with man, O Sovereign LORD?
20 "What more can David say to you? For you know your servant, O Sovereign LORD.
21 For the sake of your word and according to your will, you have done this great thing and made it known to your servant.
22 "How great you are, O Sovereign LORD! There is no-one like you, and there is no God but you, as we have heard with our own ears.
23 And who is like your people Israel--the one nation on earth that God went out to redeem as a people for himself, and to make a name for himself, and to perform great and awesome wonders by driving out nations and their gods from before your people, whom you redeemed from Egypt?
24 You have established your people Israel as your very own for ever, and you, O LORD, have become their God.
25 "And now, LORD God, keep for ever the promise you have made concerning your servant and his house. Do as you promised,
26 so that your name will be great for ever. Then men will say,`The LORD Almighty is God over Israel!' And the house of your servant David will be established before you.
27 "O LORD Almighty, God of Israel, you have revealed this to your servant, saying,`I will build a house for you.' So your servant has found courage to offer you this prayer.
28 O Sovereign LORD, you are God! Your words are trustworthy, and you have promised these good things to your servant.
29 Now be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may continue for ever in your sight; for you, O Sovereign LORD, have spoken, and with your blessing the house of your servant will be blessed for ever."
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS sat H3427 VQQ3MS in his house H1004 B-CMS-3MS , and the LORD H3068 W-EDS had given him rest H5117 round about H5439 M-ADV from all H3605 M-CMS his enemies H341 ;
2 That the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Nathan H5416 the prophet H5030 , See H7200 VQI2MS now H4994 IJEC , I H595 PPRO-1MS dwell H3427 VQPMS in a house H1004 B-CMS of cedar H730 , but the ark H727 of God H430 D-NAME-4MP dwelleth H3427 VQPMS within H8432 B-NMS curtains H3407 .
3 And Nathan H5416 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , Go H1980 VQI2MS , do H6213 VQI2MS all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO is in thine heart H3824 ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS is with H5973 PREP-2FS thee .
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS night H3915 , that the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Nathan H5416 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
5 Go H1980 VQI2MS and tell H559 my servant H5650 CMS-1MS David H1732 MMS , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Shalt thou H859 build H1129 me a house H1004 for me to dwell H3427 in ?
6 Whereas H3588 CONJ I have not H3808 NADV dwelt H3427 in any house H1004 since the time H3117 that I brought up H5927 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , even to H5704 W-PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS , but have H1961 walked H1980 VTPMS in a tent H168 and in a tabernacle H4908 .
7 In all H3605 the places wherein H834 RPRO I have walked H1980 with all H3605 B-CMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 spoke H1696 VPQ1MS I a word H1697 with H854 PREP any H259 of the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , whom H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 to feed H7462 my people H5971 Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Why H4100 L-IPRO build H1129 ye not H3808 ADV me a house H1004 CMS of cedar H730 ?
8 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore H3541 so shalt thou say H559 VQY2MS unto my servant H5650 L-CMS-1MS David H1732 L-NAME , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , I H589 PPRO-1MS took H3947 thee from H4480 PREP the sheepcote H5116 , from following H310 the sheep H6629 , to be H1961 L-VQFC ruler H5057 NMS over H5921 PREP my people H5971 , over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 LMS :
9 And I was H1961 W-VQY1MS with H5973 PREP-2MS thee whithersoever H3605 NMS thou wentest H1980 , and have cut off H3772 all H3605 NMS thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS out of thy sight H6440 M-CMP-2MS , and have made H6213 thee a great H1419 AMS name H8034 CMS , like unto the name H8034 K-CMS of the great H1419 AMS men that H834 RPRO are in the earth H776 B-GFS .
10 Moreover I will appoint H7760 W-VQQ1MS a place H4725 NUM-MS for my people H5971 Israel H3478 , and will plant H5193 them , that they may dwell H7931 in a place H8478 PREP-3MS of their own , and move H7264 no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV ; neither H3808 W-NPAR shall the children H1121 of wickedness H5766 NFS afflict H6031 them any more H3254 , as H834 K-RPRO formerly H7223 ,
11 And as since H4480 the time H3117 D-AMS that H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 judges H8199 to be over H5921 PREP my people H5971 Israel H3478 , and have caused thee to rest H5117 from all H3605 M-CMS thine enemies H341 VQPMP-2MS . Also the LORD H3068 EDS telleth H5046 thee that H3588 CONJ he will make H6213 VQY3MS thee a house H1004 .
12 And when H3588 CONJ thy days H3117 CMP-2MS be fulfilled H4390 , and thou shalt sleep H7901 with H854 PREP thy fathers H1 , I will set up H6965 thy seed H2233 CMS-2MS after H310 thee , which H834 RPRO shall proceed H3318 VQY3MS out of thy bowels H4578 , and I will establish H3559 his kingdom H4467 .
13 He H1931 PPRO-3MS shall build H1129 a house H1004 NMS for my name H8034 , and I will establish H3559 the throne H3678 of his kingdom H4467 CFS-3MS forever H5704 PREP .
14 I H589 PPRO-1MS will be H1961 VQY1MS his father H1 , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall be H1961 VQY3MS my son H1121 . If H834 RPRO he commit iniquity H5753 , I will chasten H3198 him with the rod H7626 of men H376 NMP , and with the stripes H5061 of the children H1121 of men H120 :
15 But my mercy H2617 shall not H3808 NADV depart away H5493 VQY3MS from H4480 M-PREP-3MS him , as H834 RPRO I took H5493 it from M-PREP Saul H7586 , whom H834 RPRO I put away H5493 before H6440 thee .
16 And thine house H1004 CMS-2MS and thy kingdom H4467 shall be established H539 forever H5704 PREP before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : thy throne H3678 shall be H1961 VQY3MS established H3559 NMS forever H5704 PREP .
17 According to all H3605 K-NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP , and according to all H3605 this H2088 D-PMS vision H2384 , so H3651 ADV did Nathan H5416 speak H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP David H1732 .
18 Then went H935 W-VQY3MS king H4428 D-NMS David H1732 MMS in , and sat H3427 W-VQY3MS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3069 , and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 W-IPRO am I H595 PPRO-1MS , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ? and what H4310 W-IPRO is my house H1004 CMS-1MS , that H3588 CONJ thou hast brought H935 me hitherto H5704 PREP ?
19 And this H2063 DPRO was yet H5750 ADV a small H6994 thing in thy sight H5869 , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; but thou hast spoken H1696 also H1571 CONJ of H413 PREP thy servant H5650 \'s house H1004 for a great while to come H7350 . And is this H2063 the manner H8452 of man H120 D-NMS , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ?
20 And what H4100 W-IPRO can David H1732 MMS say H3254 more H5750 ADV unto H413 PREP-2MS thee ? for thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS , Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , knowest H3045 VQQ2MS thy servant H5650 .
21 For thy word\'s sake H5668 B-NMS , and according to thine own heart H3820 , hast thou done H6213 VQQ2MS all H3605 NMS these H2063 D-DFS great things H1420 , to make thy servant H5650 know H3045 them .
22 Wherefore H5921 PREP thou art great H1431 , O LORD H3068 God H136 EDS : for H3588 CONJ there is none H369 NPAR like thee H3644 PREP-2MS , neither H369 W-NPAR is there any God H430 EDP beside H2108 thee , according to all H3605 that H834 RPRO we have heard H8085 VQQ1MP with our ears H241 .
23 And what H4310 W-IPRO one H259 MMS nation H1471 NMS in the earth H776 B-NFS is like thy people H5971 , even like Israel H3478 , whom H834 RPRO God H430 EDP went H1980 to redeem H6299 for a people H5971 to himself , and to make H7760 him a name H8034 CMS , and to do H6213 for you great H1420 things and terrible H3372 , for thy land H776 , before H6440 M-CMP thy people H5971 , which H834 RPRO thou redeemedst H6299 to thee from Egypt H4714 M-TFS , from the nations H1471 NMP and their gods H430 NAME-4MP ?
24 For thou hast confirmed H3559 to thyself thy people H5971 Israel H3478 to be a people H5971 unto thee forever H5704 PREP : and thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS , LORD H3068 EDS , art become H1961 VQQ2MS their God H430 L-NMP .
25 And now H6258 W-ADV , O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 EDP , the word H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 concerning H5921 PREP thy servant H5650 , and concerning H5921 W-PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , establish H6965 it , forever H5704 PREP , and do H6213 as H834 RPRO thou hast said H1696 .
26 And let thy name H8034 be magnified H1431 forever H5704 PREP , saying H559 L-VQFC , The LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 is the God H430 EDP over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 : and let the house H1004 W-NMS of thy servant H5650 David H1732 be H1961 VQY3MS established H3559 NMS before H6440 thee .
27 For H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS , O LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , hast revealed H1540 to thy servant H5650 , saying H559 L-VQFC , I will build H1129 thee a house H1004 NMS : therefore H3651 ADV hath thy servant H5650 found H4672 VQPMS in his heart H3820 CMS-3MS to pray H6419 this H2063 prayer H8605 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee .
28 And now H6258 W-ADV , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS art that H1931 PPRO-3MS God H430 D-NAME-4MP , and thy words H1697 be H1961 VQY3MP true H571 CFS , and thou hast promised H1696 this H2063 goodness H2896 unto H413 PREP thy servant H5650 :
29 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV let it please H2794 thee to bless H1288 the house H1004 CMS of thy servant H5650 , that it may continue H1961 forever H5769 L-NMS before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS , O Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , hast spoken H1696 it : and with thy blessing H1293 let the house H1004 of thy servant H5650 be blessed H1288 forever H5769 .
