Acts 27 (NIV) New International Version

1 When it was decided that we would sail for Italy, Paul and some other prisoners were handed over to a centurion named Julius, who belonged to the Imperial Regiment.
2 We boarded a ship from Adramyttium about to sail for ports along the coast of the province of Asia, and we put out to sea. Aristarchus, a Macedonian from Thessalonica, was with us.
3 The next day we landed at Sidon; and Julius, in kindness to Paul, allowed him to go to his friends so they might provide for his needs.
4 From there we put out to sea again and passed to the lee of Cyprus because the winds were against us.
5 When we had sailed across the open sea off the coast of Cilicia and Pamphylia, we landed at Myra in Lycia.
6 There the centurion found an Alexandrian ship sailing for Italy and put us on board.
7 We made slow headway for many days and had difficulty arriving off Cnidus. When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone.
8 We moved along the coast with difficulty and came to a place called Fair Havens, near the town of Lasea.
9 Much time had been lost, and sailing had already become dangerous because by now it was after the Fast. So Paul warned them,
10 "Men, I can see that our voyage is going to be disastrous and bring great loss to ship and cargo, and to our own lives also."
11 But the centurion, instead of listening to what Paul said, followed the advice of the pilot and of the owner of the ship.
12 Since the harbour was unsuitable to winter in, the majority decided that we should sail on, hoping to reach Phoenix and winter there. This was a harbour in Crete, facing both south-west and north-west.
13 When a gentle south wind began to blow, they thought they had obtained what they wanted; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete.
14 Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the "north-easter", swept down from the island.
15 The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along.
16 As we passed to the lee of a small island called Cauda, we were hardly able to make the lifeboat secure.
17 When the men had hoisted it aboard, they passed ropes under the ship itself to hold it together. Fearing that they would run aground on the sand-bars of Syrtis, they lowered the sea anchor and let the ship be driven along.
18 We took such a violent battering from the storm that the next day they began to throw the cargo overboard.
19 On the third day, they threw the ship's tackle overboard with their own hands.
20 When neither sun nor stars appeared for many days and the storm continued raging, we finally gave up all hope of being saved.
21 After the men had gone a long time without food, Paul stood up before them and said: "Men, you should have taken my advice not to sail from Crete; then you would have spared yourselves this damage and loss.
22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage, because not one of you will be lost; only the ship will be destroyed.
23 Last night an angel of the God whose I am and whom I serve stood beside me
24 and said,`Do not be afraid, Paul. You must stand trial before Caesar; and God has graciously given you the lives of all who sail with you.'
25 So keep up your courage, men, for I have faith in God that it will happen just as he told me.
26 Nevertheless, we must run aground on some island."
27 On the fourteenth night we were still being driven across the Adriatic Sea, when about midnight the sailors sensed they were approaching land.
28 They took soundings and found that the water was one hundred and twenty feet deep. A short time later they took soundings again and found it was ninety feet deep.
29 Fearing that we would be dashed against the rocks, they dropped four anchors from the stern and prayed for daylight.
30 In an attempt to escape from the ship, the sailors let the lifeboat down into the sea, pretending they were going to lower some anchors from the bow.
31 Then Paul said to the centurion and the soldiers, "Unless these men stay with the ship, you cannot be saved."
32 So the soldiers cut the ropes that held the lifeboat and let it fall away.
33 Just before dawn Paul urged them all to eat. "For the last fourteen days," he said, "you have been in constant suspense and have gone without food--you haven't eaten anything.
34 Now I urge you to take some food. You need it to survive. Not one of you will lose a single hair from his head."
35 After he said this, he took some bread and gave thanks to God in front of them all. Then he broke it and began to eat.
36 They were all encouraged and ate some food themselves.
37 Altogether there were 276 of us on board.
38 When they had eaten as much as they wanted, they lightened the ship by throwing the grain into the sea.
39 When daylight came, they did not recognise the land, but they saw a bay with a sandy beach, where they decided to run the ship aground if they could.
40 Cutting loose the anchors, they left them in the sea and at the same time untied the ropes that held the rudders. Then they hoisted the foresail to the wind and made for the beach.
41 But the ship struck a sand-bar and ran aground. The bow stuck fast and would not move, and the stern was broken to pieces by the pounding of the surf.
42 The soldiers planned to kill the prisoners to prevent any of them from swimming away and escaping.
43 But the centurion wanted to spare Paul's life and kept them from carrying out their plan. He ordered those who could swim to jump overboard first and get to land.
44 The rest were to get there on planks or on pieces of the ship. In this way everyone reached land in safety.
1 And G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV it was determined G2919 V-API-3S that G3588 T-GSM we G3588 T-GSM should sail G636 V-PAN into G1519 PREP Italy G2482 N-ASF , they delivered G3860 V-IAI-3P Paul G3972 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ certain G5100 X-APM other G2087 A-APM prisoners G1202 N-APM unto one named G3686 N-DSN Julius G2457 N-DSM , a centurion G1543 N-DSM of Augustus G4575 A-GSF \' band G4686 N-GSF .
2 And G1161 CONJ entering into G1910 V-2AAP-NSM a ship G4143 N-DSN of Adramyttium G98 A-DSN , we launched G321 V-API-1P , meaning G3195 V-PAP-NPM to sail G4126 V-PAN by the G3588 T-APM coasts G5117 N-APM of G3588 T-ASF Asia G773 N-ASF ; one Aristarchus G708 N-GSM , a Macedonian G3110 N-GSM of Thessalonica G2331 N-GSM , being G5607 V-PXP-GSM with G4862 PREP us G2254 P-1DP .
3 And G5037 PRT the G3588 T-DSF next G2087 A-DSF day we touched G2609 V-2API-1S at G1519 PREP Sidon G4605 N-ASF . And G5037 PRT Julius G2457 N-NSM courteously G5364 ADV entreated G5530 V-ADP-NSM Paul G3972 N-DSM , and gave him liberty G2010 V-AAI-3S to go G4198 V-AOP-ASM unto G4314 PREP his friends G5384 A-APM to refresh himself G5177 V-2AAN .
4 And when we had launched from thence G2547 ADV-C , we G3588 T-ASF sailed under G5284 V-AAI-1P Cyprus G2954 N-ASF , because the G3588 T-APM winds G417 N-APM were G1511 V-PXN contrary G1727 A-APM .
5 And G5037 PRT when we had sailed over G1277 V-AAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASN sea G3989 N-ASN of G3588 T-ASF Cilicia G2791 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ Pamphylia G3828 N-ASF , we came G2718 V-2AAI-1P to G1519 PREP Myra G3460 N-APN , a city of Lycia G3073 N-GSF .
6 And there G2546 ADV-C the G3588 T-NSM centurion G1543 N-NSM found G2147 V-2AAP-NSM a ship G4143 N-ASN of Alexandria G222 A-ASN sailing G4126 V-PAP-ASN into G1519 PREP Italy G2482 N-ASF ; and he put G1688 V-AAI-3S us G2248 P-1AP therein G1519 PREP .
7 And G1161 CONJ when we had sailed slowly G1020 V-PAP-NPM many G2425 A-DPF days G2250 N-DPF , and G2532 CONJ scarce G3433 ADV were come G1096 V-2ADP-NPM over against G2596 PREP Cnidus G2834 N-ASF , the G3588 T-GSM wind G417 N-GSM not G3361 PRT-N suffering G4330 V-PAP-GSM us G2248 P-1AP , we G3588 T-ASF sailed under G5284 V-AAI-1P Crete G2914 N-ASF , over against G2596 PREP Salmone G4534 N-ASF ;
8 And G5037 PRT , hardly G3433 ADV passing G3881 V-PNP-NPM it G846 P-ASF , came G2064 V-2AAI-1P unto G1519 PREP a G5100 X-ASM place G5117 N-ASM which is called G2564 V-PPP-ASM The fair G2568 A-APM havens ; nigh G1451 ADV whereunto G3739 R-DSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S the city G4172 N-NSF of Lasea G2996 N-NSF .
9 Now G1161 CONJ when much G2425 A-GSM time G5550 N-GSM was spent G1230 V-2ADP-GSM , and G2532 CONJ when sailing G4144 N-GSM was G5607 V-PXP-GSM now G2235 ADV dangerous G2000 A-GSM , because G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF fast G3521 N-ASF was now already past G3928 V-2RAN , Paul G3972 N-NSM admonished G3867 V-IAI-3S them ,
10 And said G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , Sirs G435 N-VPM , I perceive G2334 V-PAI-1S that G3588 T-ASM this voyage G4144 N-ASM will G3195 V-PAN be G1510 with G3326 PREP hurt G5196 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ much G4183 A-GSF damage G2209 N-GSF , not G3756 PRT-N only G3440 ADV of the G3588 T-GSM lading G5414 and G2532 CONJ ship G4143 N-GSN , but G235 CONJ also G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GPF our G3588 T-GPF lives G5590 N-GPF .
11 Nevertheless G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM centurion G1543 N-NSM believed G3982 V-IPI-3S the G3588 T-DSM master G2942 N-DSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-DSM owner of the ship G3490 N-DSM , more G3123 ADV than G2228 PRT those G3588 T-DPN things which G3588 T-DPN were spoken G3004 V-PPP-DPN by G5259 PREP Paul G3972 N-GSM .
12 And G1161 CONJ because the G3588 T-GSM haven G3040 N-GSM was G5225 V-PAP-GSM not commodious G428 A-GSM to G4314 PREP winter in G3915 N-ASF , the G3588 T-NPM more part G4119 A-NPM-C advised G5087 V-2AMI-3P to depart G321 V-APN thence also G2547 ADV-C , if by any means G1513 they might G1410 V-PNO-3P attain G2658 V-AAP-NPM to G1519 PREP Phenice G5405 N-ASM , and there to winter G3914 V-AAN ; which is an haven G3040 N-ASM of Crete G2914 N-GSF , and lieth G991 V-PAP-ASM toward G2596 PREP the southwest G3047 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ northwest G5566 N-ASM .
13 And G1161 CONJ when the south wind G3558 N-GSM blew softly G5285 V-AAP-GSM , supposing G1380 V-AAP-NPM that G3588 T-GSF they G3588 T-GSF had obtained G2902 V-RAN their purpose G4286 N-GSF , loosing G142 V-AAP-NPM thence , they G3588 T-ASF sailed close by G3881 V-INI-3P Crete G2914 N-ASF .
14 But G1161 CONJ not G3756 PRT-N long G4183 A-ASN after G3326 PREP there arose G906 V-2AAI-3S against G2596 PREP it G846 P-GSF a tempestuous G5189 A-NSM wind G417 N-NSM , called G2564 V-PPP-NSM Euroclydon G2148 N-NSM .
15 And G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN was caught G4884 V-APP-GSN , and G2532 CONJ could G1410 V-PNP-GSN not G3361 PRT-N bear up G503 V-PAN into the G3588 T-DSM wind G417 N-DSM , we let her drive G1929 V-2AAP-NPM .
16 And G1161 CONJ running under G5295 V-2AAP-NPM a certain G5100 X-ASN island G3519 N-ASN which is called G2564 V-PPP-ASN Clauda G2802 N-ASF , we had much work G2480 V-AAI-1P to come by V-2ADN the G3588 T-GSF boat G4627 N-GSF :
17 Which G3739 R-ASF when they had taken up G142 V-AAP-NPM , they used G5530 V-INI-3P helps G996 N-DPF , undergirding G5269 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASN ship G4143 N-ASN ; and G5037 PRT , fearing G5399 V-PNP-NPM lest G3361 PRT-N they should fall G1601 V-2AAS-3P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF quicksands G4950 N-ASF , struck sail G5465 V-AAP-NPM , and so G3779 ADV were driven G5342 V-IPI-3P .
18 And G1161 CONJ we G2257 P-1GP being exceedingly G4971 ADV tossed with a tempest G5492 V-PPP-GPM , the G3588 T-DSF next G1836 ADV day they lightened the ship G4160 V-IMI-3P ;
19 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-DSF third G5154 A-DSF day we cast out G4496 V-AAI-1P with our own hands G849 A-NPM the G3588 T-ASF tackling G4631 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN .
20 And G1161 CONJ when neither G3383 CONJ sun G2246 N-GSM nor G3383 CONJ stars G798 N-GPN in G1909 PREP many G4119 A-APM-C days G2250 N-APF appeared G2014 V-PAP-GPN , and G5037 PRT no G3756 PRT-N small G3641 A-GSM tempest G5494 N-GSM lay on G1945 V-PNP-GSM us , all G3956 A-NSF hope G1680 N-NSF that G3588 T-GSM we G3588 T-GSM should be saved G4982 V-PPN was then G3063 A-ASN taken away G4014 V-IPI-3S .
21 But G1161 CONJ after G5225 V-PAP-GSF long G4183 A-GSF abstinence G776 N-GSF Paul G3972 N-NSM stood forth G2476 V-APP-NSM in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN of them G848 , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Sirs G435 N-VPM , ye should G1163 V-IQI-3S have G3303 PRT hearkened G3980 V-AAP-APM unto me G3427 P-1DS , and not G3361 PRT-N have loosed G321 V-PPN from G575 PREP Crete G2914 N-GSF , and G5037 PRT to have gained G2770 V-AAN this G3588 T-ASF harm G5196 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ loss G2209 N-ASF .
22 And G2532 CONJ now G3569 I exhort G3867 V-PAI-1S you G5209 P-2AP to be of good cheer G2114 V-PAN : for G1063 CONJ there shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S no G3762 A-NSF loss G580 N-NSF of any man\'s life G5590 N-GSF among G1537 PREP you G5216 P-2GP , but G4133 ADV of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN .
23 For G1063 CONJ there stood by G3936 V-2AAI-3S me G3427 P-1DS this G3588 T-DSF night G3571 N-DSF the G3588 T-GSM angel G32 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM , whose G3739 R-GSM I am G1510 V-PXI-1S , and G2532 CONJ whom G3739 R-DSM I serve G3000 V-PAI-1S ,
24 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Fear G5399 V-PNM-2S not G3361 PRT-N , Paul G3972 N-VSM ; thou G4571 P-2AS must G1163 V-PQI-3S be brought before G3936 V-2AAN Caesar G2541 N-DSM : and G2532 CONJ , lo G2400 V-2AAM-2S , God G2316 N-NSM hath given G5483 V-RNI-3S thee G4671 P-2DS all G3956 A-APM them that sail G4126 V-PAP-APM with G3326 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS .
25 Wherefore G1352 CONJ , sirs G435 N-VPM , be of good cheer G2114 V-PAM-2P : for G1063 CONJ I G3588 T-DSM believe G4100 V-PAI-1S God G2316 N-DSM , that G3754 CONJ it G3779 ADV shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S even as PREP it was told G2980 V-RPI-3S me G3427 P-1DS .
26 Howbeit G1161 CONJ we G2248 P-1AP must G1163 V-PQI-3S be cast G1601 V-2AAN upon G1519 PREP a certain G5100 X-ASF island G3520 N-ASF .
27 But G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV the fourteenth G5065 A-NSF night G3571 N-NSF was come G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as we G2257 P-1GP were driven up and down G1308 V-PPP-GPM in G1722 PREP Adria G99 N-DSM , about G2596 PREP midnight G3319 A-ASN the G3588 T-NPM shipmen G3492 N-NPM deemed G5282 V-IAI-3P that they G848 drew near G4317 V-PAN to some G5100 X-ASF country G5561 N-ASF ;
28 And G2532 CONJ sounded G1001 V-AAP-NPM , and found G2147 V-2AAI-3P it twenty G1501 A-NPM fathoms G3712 N-APF : and G1161 CONJ when they had gone a little further G1339 V-AAP-NPM , they sounded G1001 V-AAP-NPM again G3825 ADV , and G2532 CONJ found G2147 V-2AAI-3P it fifteen G1178 A-NUI fathoms G3712 N-APF .
29 Then G5037 PRT fearing G5399 V-PNP-NPM lest G3381 CONJ we should have fallen G1601 V-2AAS-1P upon G1519 PREP rocks G5138 A-APM , they cast G4496 V-AAP-NPM four G5064 A-APF anchors G45 N-APF out G1537 PREP of the stern G4403 N-GSF , and wished G2172 V-INI-3P for the day G2250 N-ASF .
30 And G1161 CONJ as the G3588 T-GPM shipmen G3492 N-GPM were about G2212 V-PAP-GPM to flee G5343 V-2AAN out of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSN ship G4143 N-GSN , when G2532 CONJ they had let down G5465 V-AAP-GPM the G3588 T-ASF boat G4627 N-ASF into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF , under color G4392 N-DSF as though G5613 ADV they would G3195 V-PAP-GPM have cast G1614 V-PAN anchors G45 N-APF out of G1537 PREP the foreship G4408 N-GSF ,
31 Paul G3972 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S to the G3588 T-DSM centurion G1543 N-DSM and G2532 CONJ to the G3588 T-DPM soldiers G4757 N-DPM , Except G3362 these G3778 D-NPM abide G3306 V-AAS-3P in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN ship G4143 N-DSN , ye G5210 P-2NP cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P be saved G4982 V-APN .
32 Then G5119 ADV the G3588 T-NPM soldiers G4757 N-NPM cut off G609 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-APN ropes G4979 N-APN of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF boat G4627 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ let G1439 V-AAI-3P her G846 P-ASF fall off G1601 V-2AAN .
33 And G1161 CONJ while G891 PREP the day G2250 N-NSF was G3195 V-IAI-3S coming on G1096 V-PNN , Paul G3972 N-NSM besought G3870 V-IAI-3S them all G537 A-APM to take G3335 V-2AAN meat G5160 N-GSF , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , This day G4594 ADV is the fourteenth G5065 A-ASF day G2250 N-ASF that ye have tarried G4328 V-PAP-NPM and continued G1300 V-PAI-2P fasting G777 A-NPM , having taken G4355 V-2AMP-NPM nothing G3367 A-ASN .
34 Wherefore G1352 CONJ I pray G3870 V-PAI-1S you G5209 P-2AP to take G4355 V-2AAN some meat G5160 N-GSF : for G1063 CONJ this G5124 D-NSN is G5225 V-PAI-3S for G3588 T-GSF your G5212 S-2GPF health G4991 N-GSF : for G1063 CONJ there shall not an hair G2359 N-NSF fall G4098 V-FDI-3S from G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF head G2776 N-GSF of any G3762 A-GSM of you G5216 P-2GP .
35 And G1161 CONJ when he had thus G5023 D-APN spoken G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , he G2532 CONJ took G2983 V-2AAP-NSM bread G740 N-ASM , and gave thanks G2168 V-AAI-3S to God G2316 N-DSM in presence G1799 ADV of them all G3956 A-GPM : and G2532 CONJ when he had broken G2806 V-AAP-NSM it , he began G756 V-ADI-3S to eat G2068 V-PAN .
36 Then G1161 CONJ were G1096 V-2ADP-NPM they all G3956 A-NPM of good cheer G2115 A-NPM , and they G848 also G2532 CONJ took G4355 V-2AMI-3P some meat G5160 N-GSF .
37 And G1161 CONJ we G3588 T-NPF were G2258 in all G3956 A-NPF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN ship G4143 N-DSN two hundred threescore and sixteen G1803 A-NUI souls G5590 N-NPF .
38 And G1161 CONJ when they had eaten enough G2880 V-APP-NPM , they lightened G2893 V-IAI-3P the G3588 T-ASN ship G4143 N-ASN , and cast out G1544 V-PMP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM wheat G4621 N-ASM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF .
