1 পরে মহাযাজক বলিলেন, এই সকল কথা কি সত্য? তিনি কহিলেন,
2 হে ভ্রাতারা ও পিতারা, শুনুন। আমাদের পিতা অব্রাহাম হারণে বসতি করিবার পূর্ব্বে যে সময়ে মিসপতামিয়ায় ছিলেন, তৎকালে প্রতাপের ঈশ্বর তাঁহাকে দর্শন দিয়াছিলেন, আর বলিয়াছিলেন,
3 “তুমি স্বদেশ হইতে ও আপন জ্ঞাতি কুটুম্বদের মধ্য হইতে বাহির হও, এবং আমি যে দেশ তোমাকে দেখাই, সেই দেশে চল।”
4 তখন তিনি কল্‌দীয়দের দেশ হইতে বাহির হইয়া গিয়া হারণে বসতি করিলেন; আর তাঁহার পিতার মৃত্যু হইলে পর ঈশ্বর তাঁহাকে তথা হইতে এই দেশে আনিলেন, যে দেশে আপনারা এখন বাস করিতেছেন,
5 কিন্তু এই দেশের মধ্যে তাঁহাকে অধিকার দিলেন না, এক পাদ পরিমিত ভূমিও না; আর অঙ্গীকার করিলেন, তিনি তাঁহাকে ও তাঁহার পরে তাঁহার বংশকে অধিকারার্থে তাহা দিবেন, যদিও তখন তাঁহার সন্তান হয় নাই।
6 আর ঈশ্বর এইরূপ বলিলেন যে, “তাঁহার বংশ পরদেশে প্রবাসী থাকিবে, এবং লোকে তাহাদিগকে দাসত্ব করাইবে ও তাহাদের প্রতি চারি শত বৎসর পর্য্যন্ত দৌরাত্ম্য করিবে;
7 আর তাহারা যে জাতির দাস হইবে, আমিই তাহার বিচার করিব,” ঈশ্বর আরও কহিলেন, “তৎপরে তাহারা বাহির হইয়া আসিবে, এবং এই স্থানে আমার আরাধনা করিবে।”
8 আর তিনি তাঁহাকে ত্বক্‌ছেদের নিয়ম দিলেন; আর এইরূপে অব্রাহাম ইস্‌হাককে জন্ম দিলেন, এবং অষ্টম দিবসে তাঁহার ত্বক্‌ছেদ করিলেন; পরে ইস্‌হাক যাকোবের, এবং যাকোব সেই বারো জন পিতৃকুলপতির জন্ম দিলেন।
9 আর পিতৃকুলপতিরা যোষেফের প্রতি ঈর্ষা করিয়া তাঁহাকে বিক্রয় করিলে তিনি মিসরে নীত হন।
10 কিন্তু ঈশ্বর তাঁহার সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ছিলেন, এবং তাঁহার সমস্ত ক্লেশ হইতে তাঁহাকে উদ্ধার করিলেন, আর মিসর-রাজ ফরৌণের সাক্ষাতে অনুগ্রহ ও বিজ্ঞতা প্রদান করিলেন; তাহাতে ফরৌণ তাঁহাকে মিসরের ও আপন সমস্ত গৃহের অধ্যক্ষ-পদে নিযুক্ত করিলেন।
11 পরে সমস্ত মিসরে ও কনানে দুর্ভিক্ষ হইল, বড়ই ক্লেশ ঘটিল, আর আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের ভক্ষ্যের অভাব হইল।
12 কিন্তু মিসরে শস্য আছে শুনিয়া যাকোব আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদিগকে প্রথম বার প্রেরণ করিলেন।
13 পরে দ্বিতীয় বারে যোষেফ আপন ভ্রাতাদের পরিচিত হইলেন, এবং যোষেফের জাতি ফরৌণের কাছে ব্যক্ত হইল।
14 পরে যোষেফ আপন পিতা যাকোবকে এবং আপনার সমস্ত জ্ঞাতিকে, পঁচাত্তর প্রাণীকে, আপনার নিকটে ডাকিয়া পাঠাইলেন।
15 তাহাতে যাকোব মিসরে গেলেন, পরে তাঁহার ও আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের মৃত্যু হইল।
16 আর তাঁহারা শিখিমে নীত হইলেন, এবং যে কবর অব্রাহাম রৌপ্যমূল্য দিয়া শিখিমে হমোর-সন্তানদের নিকটে ক্রয় করিয়াছিলেন, তন্মধ্যে সমাহিত হইলেন।
17 পরে, ঈশ্বর অব্রাহামের নিকটে যে প্রতিজ্ঞা করিয়াছিলেন, সেই প্রতিজ্ঞা ফলিবার সময় সন্নিকট হইলে, লোকেরা মিসরে বৃদ্ধি পাইয়া বহুসংখ্যক হইয়া উঠিল।
18 অবশেষে মিসরের উপরে এমন আর এক জন রাজা উৎপন্ন হইলেন, যিনি যোষেফকে জানিতেন না।
19 তিনি আমাদের জাতির সহিত চাতুর্য্য ব্যবহার করিলেন; আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের প্রতি দৌরাত্ম্য করিলেন, উদ্দেশ্য এই যে, তাঁহাদের শিশু সকলকে বাহিরে ফেলিয়া দেওয়া হয়, যেন তাহারা জীবিত না থাকে।
20 সেই সময়ে মোশির জন্ম হয়। তিনি ঈশ্বরের দৃষ্টিতে সুন্দর ছিলেন, এবং তিনি মাস পর্য্যন্ত পিতার বাটীতে পালিত হইলেন।
21 পরে তাঁহাকে বাহিরে ফেলিয়া দেওয়া হইলে ফরৌণের কন্যা তুলিয়া লন, ও আপনার পুত্র করিবার উদ্দেশ্যে প্রতিপালন করেন।
22 আর মোশি মিস্রীয়দের সমস্ত বিদ্যায় শিক্ষিত হইলেন, এবং তিনি বাক্যে ও কার্য্যে পরাক্রমী ছিলেন।
23 পরে তাঁহার প্রায় সম্পূর্ণ চল্লিশ বৎসর বয়ঃক্রম হইলে নিজ ভ্রাতৃগণের, ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণের, তত্ত্বাবধান করিবার ইচ্ছা তাঁহার হৃদয়ে উঠিল।
24 তখন এক জনের প্রতি অন্যায় করা হইতেছে দেখিয়া তিনি তাহার পক্ষ হইলেন, সেই মিস্রীয় ব্যক্তিকে আঘাত করিয়া উপদ্রুতের পক্ষে অন্যায়ের প্রতিকার করিলেন।
25 তিনি মনে করিতেছিলেন, তাঁহার ভ্রাতৃগণ বুঝিয়াছে যে, তাঁহার হস্ত দ্বারা ঈশ্বর তাহাদিগকে পরিত্রাণ দিতেছেন; কিন্তু তাহারা বুঝিল না।
26 আর পর দিবস তাহারা যখন মারামারি করিতেছিল, তখন তিনি তাহাদের কাছে দেখা দিয়া মিলন করাইয়া দিবার চেষ্টা করিলেন, কহিলেন, ওহে, তোমরা পরস্পর ভ্রাতা, এক জন অন্যের প্রতি অন্যায় করিতেছ কেন?
27 কিন্তু প্রতিবাসীর প্রতি অন্যায় করিতেছিল যে ব্যক্তি, সে তাঁহাকে ঠেলিয়া ফেলিয়া দিয়া কহিল, তোমাকে অধ্যক্ষ ও বিচারকর্ত্তা করিয়া আমাদের উপরে কে নিযুক্ত করিয়াছে?
28 কাল যেমন সেই মিস্রীয়কে বধ করিলে, তেমনি কি আমাকেও বধ করিতে চাহিতেছ?
29 এই কথায় মোশি পলায়ন করিলেন, আর মিদিয়ন দেশে প্রবাসী হইলেন; সেখানে তাঁহার দুই পুত্রের জন্ম হয়।
30 পরে চল্লিশ বৎসর পূর্ণ হইলে সীনয় পর্ব্বতের প্রান্তরে এক দূত একটা ঝোপে অগ্নিশিখায় তাঁহাকে দর্শন দিলেন।
31 মোশি দেখিয়া সেই দৃশ্যে আশ্চর্য্য জ্ঞান করিলেন, আর ভাল করিয়া দেখিবার নিমিত্ত নিকটে যাইতেছেন, এমন সময়ে প্রভুর এই বাণী হইল,
32 “আমি তোমার পিতৃপুরুষদের ঈশ্বর, অব্রাহামের, ইস্‌হাকের ও যাকোবের ঈশ্বর।” তখন মোশি ত্রাসযুক্ত হওয়াতে ভাল করিয়া দেখিতে সাহস করিলেন না।
33 পরে প্রভু তাঁহাকে কহিলেন, “তোমার পা হইতে জুতা খুলিয়া ফেল; কেননা যে স্থানে তুমি দাঁড়াইয়া আছ, উহা পবিত্র ভূমি।
34 আমি মিসরে স্থিত আমার প্রজাদের দুঃখ বিলক্ষণ দেখিয়াছি, তাহাদের আর্ত্তস্বর শুনিয়াছি, আর তাহাদিগকে উদ্ধার করিতে নামিয়া আসিয়াছি, এখন আইস, আমি তোমাকে মিসরে প্রেরণ করি।”
35 এই যে মোশিকে তাহারা অস্বীকার করিয়াছিল, বলিয়াছিল, ‘তোমাকে অধ্যক্ষ ও বিচারকর্ত্তা করিয়া কে নিযুক্ত করিয়াছে?’ তাঁহাকেই ঈশ্বর, যে দূত ঝোপে তাঁহাকে দর্শন দিয়াছিলেন, সেই দূতের হস্তসহ অধ্যক্ষ ও মুক্তিদাতা করিয়া প্রেরণ করিলেন।
36 তিনিই মিসরে, লোহিত সমুদ্রে ও প্রান্তরে চল্লিশ বৎসর কাল নানাবিধ অদ্ভুত লক্ষণ ও চিহ্ন-কার্য্য সাধন করিয়া তাহাদিগকে বাহির করিয়া আনিলেন।
37 ইনি সেই মোশি, যিনি ইস্রায়েল-সন্তানগণকে এই কথা বলিয়াছিলেন, “ঈশ্বর তোমাদের জন্য তোমাদের ভ্রাতৃগণের মধ্য হইতে আমার সদৃশ এক জন ভাববাদীকে উৎপন্ন করিবেন।”
38 তিনিই প্রান্তরে মণ্ডলীতে ছিলেন; যে দূত সীনয় পর্ব্বতে তাঁহার কাছে কথা বলিয়াছিলেন, তিনিই তাঁহার এবং আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের সহিত ছিলেন। তিনি আমাদিগকে দিবার নিমিত্ত জীবনময় বচন-কলাপ পাইয়াছিলেন।
39 আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষেরা তাঁহার আজ্ঞাবহ হইতে চাহিলেন না, বরং তাঁহাকে ঠেলিয়া ফেলিলেন, আর মনে মনে পুনরায় মিসরের দিকে ফিরিলেন,
40 হারোণকে কহিলেন, “আমাদের নিমিত্ত দেবতা নির্ম্মাণ কর, তাঁহারাই আমাদের অগ্রে অগ্রে যাইবেন, কেননা এই যে মোশি মিসর দেশ হইতে আমাদিগকে বাহির করিয়া আনিলেন, তাঁহার কি হইল, আমরা জানি না।”
41 আর সেই সময়ে তাঁহারা একটা গোবৎস নির্ম্মাণ করিলেন, এবং সেই মূর্ত্তির উদ্দেশে বলি উৎসর্গ করিলেন, ও আপনাদের হস্তকৃত বস্তুতে আমোদ করিতে লাগিলেন।
42 কিন্তু ঈশ্বর বিমুখ হইলেন, তাঁহাদিগকে আকাশের বাহিনী পূজা করিবার জন্য সমর্পণ করিলেন; যেমন ভাববাদীগণের গ্রন্থে লেখা আছে, “হে ইস্রায়েল-কুল, প্রান্তরে চল্লিশ বৎসর কাল তোমরা কি আমার উদ্দেশে পশুবলি ও উপহার উৎসর্গ করিয়াছিলে?
43 তোমরা বরং মোলকের তাম্বু ও রিফন্‌ দেবতার তারা তুলিয়া বহন করিয়াছিলে, সেই মূর্ত্তিদ্বয়, যাহা তোমরা পূজা করিবার জন্য গড়িয়াছিলে; আর আমি তোমাদিগকে বাবিলের ওদিকে নির্ব্বাসিত করিব।”
44 যেমন তিনি আদেশ করিয়াছিলেন, তদনুযায়ী সাক্ষ্যের তাম্বু প্রান্তরে আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের কাছে ছিল। তিনি মোশিকে বলিয়াছিলেন, তুমি যেরূপ আদর্শ দেখিলে, সেই অনুসারে উহা নির্ম্মাণ কর।
45 আর আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষেরা তাঁহাদের সময়ে উহা প্রাপ্ত হইয়া যিহোশূয়ের সহিত আনিলেন, যখন সেই জাতিগণের অধিকারে প্রবেশ করিলেন, যাহাদিগকে ঈশ্বর আমাদের পিতৃপুরুষদের সম্মুখ হইতে তাড়াইয়া দিলেন। সেই তাম্বু দায়ূদের সময় পর্য্যন্ত রহিল।
46 ইনি ঈশ্বরের দৃষ্টিতে অনুগ্রহ প্রাপ্ত হইলেন, এবং যাকোবের ঈশ্বরের নিমিত্ত এক আবাস প্রস্তুত করিবার অনুমতি যাচ্ঞা করিলেন;
47 কিন্তু শলোমন তাঁহার জন্য এক গৃহ নির্ম্মাণ করিলেন।
48 তথাপি যিনি পরাৎপর, তিনি হস্তনির্ম্মিত গৃহে বাস করেন না; যেমন ভাববাদী বলেন,
49 “স্বর্গ আমার সিংহাসন, পৃথিবী আমার পাদপীঠ; প্রভু কহেন, তোমরা আমার জন্য কিরূপ গৃহ নির্ম্মাণ করিবে?
50 অথবা আমার বিশ্রাম-স্থান কোথায়? আমারই হস্ত কি এই সকল নির্ম্মাণ করে নাই?”
51 হে শক্তগ্রীবেরা এবং হৃদয়ে ও কর্ণে অচ্ছিন্নত্বকেরা, তোমরা সর্ব্বদা পবিত্র আত্মার প্রতিরোধ করিয়া থাক; তোমাদের পিতৃপুরুষেরা যেমন, তোমরাও তেমনি।
52 তোমাদের পিতৃপুরুষেরা কোন্‌ ভাববাদীকে তাড়না না করিয়াছে? তাহারা তাঁহাদিগকেই বধ করিয়াছিল, যাঁহারা পূর্ব্বে সেই ধর্ম্মময়ের আগমন জ্ঞাপন করিতেন, যাঁহাকে সম্প্রতি তোমরা শত্রুহস্তে সমর্পণ ও বধ করিয়াছ;
53 তোমরাই দূতগণের দ্বারা আদিষ্ট ব্যবস্থা পাইয়াছিলে, কিন্তু পালন কর নাই।
54 এই কথা শুনিয়া তাহারা মর্ম্মাহত হইল, তাঁহার প্রতি দন্তঘর্ষণ করিতে লাগিল।
55 কিন্তু তিনি পবিত্র আত্মায় পরিপূর্ণ হইয়া স্বর্গের প্রতি একদৃষ্টে চাহিয়া দেখিলেন যে, ঈশ্বরের প্রতাপ রহিয়াছে, এবং যীশু ঈশ্বরের দক্ষিণে দাঁড়াইয়া আছেন,
56 আর তিনি বলিলেন, দেখ, আমি দেখিতেছি, স্বর্গ খোলা রহিয়াছে, এবং মনুষ্যপুত্র ঈশ্বরের দক্ষিণে দাঁড়াইয়া আছেন।
57 কিন্তু তাহারা উচ্চৈঃস্বরে চেঁচাইয়া উঠিল, আপন আপন কর্ণ রুদ্ধ করিল, এবং একযোগে তাঁহার উপরে গিয়া পড়িল;
58 আর তাঁহাকে নগর হইতে বাহির করিয়া পাথর মারিতে লাগিল; এবং সাক্ষীগণ আপন আপন বস্ত্র খুলিয়া শৌল নামে এক যুবকের পায়ের কাছে রাখিল।
59 এদিকে তাহারা স্তিফানকে পাথর মারিতেছিল, আর তিনি ডাকিয়া প্রার্থনা করিলেন, হে প্রভু যীশু, আমার আত্মাকে গ্রহণ কর।
60 পরে তিনি হাঁটু পাতিয়া উচ্চৈঃস্বরে কহিলেন, প্রভু, ইহাদের বিপক্ষে এই পাপ ধরিও না। ইহা বলিয়া তিনি নিদ্রাগত হইলেন। আর শৌল তাঁহার হত্যার অনুমোদন করিতে ছিলেন।
