1 Kings 18:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 After many days the word of the LORD came to Elijah, in the third year of the drought, saying, "Go, present yourself to Ahab; I will send rain on the earth."
2 So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. The famine was severe in Samaria.
3 Ahab summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of the palace. (Now Obadiah revered the LORD greatly;
4 when Jezebel was killing off the prophets of the LORD, Obadiah took a hundred prophets, hid them fifty to a cave, and provided them with bread and water.)
5 Then Ahab said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs of water and to all the wadis; perhaps we may find grass to keep the horses and mules alive, and not lose some of the animals."
6 So they divided the land between them to pass through it; Ahab went in one direction by himself, and Obadiah went in another direction by himself.
7 As Obadiah was on the way, Elijah met him; Obadiah recognized him, fell on his face, and said, "Is it you, my lord Elijah?"
8 He answered him, "It is I. Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here."
9 And he said, "How have I sinned, that you would hand your servant over to Ahab, to kill me?
10 As the LORD your God lives, there is no nation or kingdom to which my lord has not sent to seek you; and when they would say, 'He is not here,' he would require an oath of the kingdom or nation, that they had not found you.
11 But now you say, 'Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here.'
12 As soon as I have gone from you, the spirit of the LORD will carry you I know not where; so, when I come and tell Ahab and he cannot find you, he will kill me, although I your servant have revered the LORD from my youth.
13 Has it not been told my lord what I did when Jezebel killed the prophets of the LORD, how I hid a hundred of the LORD's prophets fifty to a cave, and provided them with bread and water?
14 Yet now you say, 'Go, tell your lord that Elijah is here'; he will surely kill me."
15 Elijah said, "As the LORD of hosts lives, before whom I stand, I will surely show myself to him today."
16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab, and told him; and Ahab went to meet Elijah.
17 When Ahab saw Elijah, Ahab said to him, "Is it you, you troubler of Israel?"
18 He answered, "I have not troubled Israel; but you have, and your father's house, because you have forsaken the commandments of the LORD and followed the Baals.
19 Now therefore have all Israel assemble for me at Mount Carmel, with the four hundred fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table."
20 So Ahab sent to all the Israelites, and assembled the prophets at Mount Carmel.
21 Elijah then came near to all the people, and said, "How long will you go limping with two different opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal, then follow him." The people did not answer him a word.
22 Then Elijah said to the people, "I, even I only, am left a prophet of the LORD; but Baal's prophets number four hundred fifty.
23 Let two bulls be given to us; let them choose one bull for themselves, cut it in pieces, and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it; I will prepare the other bull and lay it on the wood, but put no fire to it.
24 Then you call on the name of your god and I will call on the name of the LORD; the god who answers by fire is indeed God." All the people answered, "Well spoken!"
25 Then Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose for yourselves one bull and prepare it first, for you are many; then call on the name of your god, but put no fire to it."
26 So they took the bull that was given them, prepared it, and called on the name of Baal from morning until noon, crying, "O Baal, answer us!" But there was no voice, and no answer. They limped about the altar that they had made.
27 At noon Elijah mocked them, saying, "Cry aloud! Surely he is a god; either he is meditating, or he has wandered away, or he is on a journey, or perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened."
28 Then they cried aloud and, as was their custom, they cut themselves with swords and lances until the blood gushed out over them.
29 As midday passed, they raved on until the time of the offering of the oblation, but there was no voice, no answer, and no response.
30 Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come closer to me"; and all the people came closer to him. First he repaired the altar of the LORD that had been thrown down;
31 Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD came, saying, "Israel shall be your name";
32 with the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD. Then he made a trench around the altar, large enough to contain two measures of seed.
33 Next he put the wood in order, cut the bull in pieces, and laid it on the wood. He said, "Fill four jars with water and pour it on the burnt offering and on the wood."
34 Then he said, "Do it a second time"; and they did it a second time. Again he said, "Do it a third time"; and they did it a third time,
35 so that the water ran all around the altar, and filled the trench also with water.
36 At the time of the offering of the oblation, the prophet Elijah came near and said, "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, let it be known this day that you are God in Israel, that I am your servant, and that I have done all these things at your bidding.
37 Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so that this people may know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back."
38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt offering, the wood, the stones, and the dust, and even licked up the water that was in the trench.
39 When all the people saw it, they fell on their faces and said, "The LORD indeed is God; the LORD indeed is God."
40 Elijah said to them, "Seize the prophets of Baal; do not let one of them escape." Then they seized them; and Elijah brought them down to the Wadi Kishon, and killed them there.
41 Elijah said to Ahab, "Go up, eat and drink; for there is a sound of rushing rain."
42 So Ahab went up to eat and to drink. Elijah went up to the top of Carmel; there he bowed himself down upon the earth and put his face between his knees.
43 He said to his servant, "Go up now, look toward the sea." He went up and looked, and said, "There is nothing." Then he said, "Go again seven times."
44 At the seventh time he said, "Look, a little cloud no bigger than a person's hand is rising out of the sea." Then he said, "Go say to Ahab, 'Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.'"
45 In a little while the heavens grew black with clouds and wind; there was a heavy rain. Ahab rode off and went to Jezreel.
46 But the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; he girded up his loins and ran in front of Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel.

2 And Elijah H452 went H1980 W-VQY3MS to show himself H7200 unto H413 PREP Ahab H256 . And there was a sore H2389 AMS famine H7458 in Samaria H8111 .
3 And Ahab H256 called H7121 W-VQY3MS Obadiah H5662 , which H834 RPRO was the governor H5921 PREP of his house H1004 . (Now Obadiah H5662 feared H1961 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS greatly H3966 ADV :
4 For it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when Jezebel H348 cut off H3772 the prophets H5030 of the LORD H3068 EDS , that Obadiah H5662 took H3947 W-VQY3MS a hundred H3967 MFS prophets H5030 , and hid H2244 them by fifty H2572 MMP in a cave H4631 , and fed H3557 them with bread H3899 NMS and water H4325 . )
5 And Ahab H256 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Obadiah H5662 , Go H1980 VQI2MS into the land H776 B-NFS , unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS fountains H4599 of water H4325 D-CMS , and unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS brooks H5158 : peradventure H194 ADV we may find H4672 VNQ3MS grass H2682 NMS to save the horses and mules alive H2421 , that we lose H3772 not H3808 all the beasts H929 .
6 So they divided H2505 the land H776 D-GFS between them to pass H5674 throughout it : Ahab H256 went H1980 VQQ3MS one H259 MMS way H1870 B-NMS by himself H905 L-CMS-3MS , and Obadiah H5662 went H1980 VQQ3MS another H259 MMS way H1870 B-NMS by himself H905 .
7 And as Obadiah H5662 was H1961 W-VQY3MS in the way H1870 , behold H2009 IJEC , Elijah H452 met H7122 him : and he knew H5234 him , and fell H5307 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Art thou H859 that H2088 DPRO my lord H113 Elijah H452 ?
8 And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS him , I H589 PPRO-1MS am : go H1980 VQI2MS , tell H559 W-VQY3MS thy lord H113 , Behold H2009 IJEC , Elijah H452 is here .
9 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IPRO have I sinned H2398 VQQ1MS , that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS wouldest deliver H5414 VQPMS thy servant H5650 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Ahab H256 , to slay H4191 me ?
10 As the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS liveth H2416 AMS , there is H3426 ADV no H518 PART nation H1471 NMS or kingdom H4467 , whither H834 RPRO my lord H113 hath not H3808 ADV sent H7971 VQQ3MS to seek H1245 thee : and when they said H559 W-VQQ3MP , He is not H369 there ; he took an oath H7650 of the kingdom H4467 and nation H1471 , that H3588 CONJ they found H4672 thee not H3808 NADV .
11 And now H6258 W-ADV thou H859 PPRO-2MS sayest H559 , Go H1980 VQI2MS , tell H559 thy lord H113 , Behold H2009 IJEC , Elijah H452 is here .
12 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , as soon as I H589 PPRO-1MS am gone H1980 VQY1MS from thee , that the Spirit H7307 W-GFS of the LORD H3068 EDS shall carry H5375 thee whither H834 RPRO I know H3045 not H3808 ADV ; and so when I come H935 and tell H5046 L-VHFC Ahab H256 , and he cannot H3808 W-NADV find H4672 thee , he shall slay H2026 me : but I thy servant H5650 fear H3372 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS from my youth H5271 .
13 Was it not H3808 I-NPAR told H5046 my lord H113 what H834 RPRO I did H6213 VQQ1MS when Jezebel H348 slew H2026 the prophets H5030 of the LORD H3068 EDS , how I hid H2244 a hundred H3967 MFS men H376 NMS of the LORD\'s prophets H5030 by fifty H2572 MMP in a cave H4631 , and fed H3557 them with bread H3899 NMS and water H4325 ?
14 And now H6258 W-ADV thou H859 PPRO-2MS sayest H559 , Go H1980 VQI2MS , tell H559 thy lord H113 , Behold H2009 IJEC , Elijah H452 is here : and he shall slay H2026 me .
15 And Elijah H452 said H559 W-VQY3MS , As the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 liveth H2416 AMS , before H6440 L-CMP-3MS whom H834 RPRO I stand H5975 VQQ1MS , I will surely H3588 CONJ show myself H7200 unto H413 him today H3117 D-AMS .
16 So Obadiah H5662 went H1980 W-VQY3MS to meet H7122 Ahab H256 , and told H5046 him : and Ahab H256 went H1980 W-VQY3MS to meet H7122 Elijah H452 .
17 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Ahab H256 saw H7200 K-VQFC Elijah H452 , that Ahab H256 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Art thou H859 he that H2088 DPRO troubleth H5916 Israel H3478 LMS ?
18 And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I have not H3808 NADV troubled H5916 Israel H3478 ; but H518 PART thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and thy father H1 NMS \'s house H1004 W-NMS , in that ye have forsaken H5800 the commandments H4687 of the LORD H3068 EDS , and thou hast followed H1980 W-VQQ3FS Baalim H1168 .
19 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore send H7971 , and gather H6908 to H413 PREP me all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 unto H413 PREP mount H2022 CMS Carmel H3760 , and the prophets H5030 of Baal H1168 four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP and fifty H2572 W-MMP , and the prophets H5030 of the groves H842 four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP , which eat H398 at Jezebel H348 \'s table H7979 .
20 So Ahab H256 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto all H3605 B-CMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and gathered the prophets together H6908 unto H413 PREP mount H2022 CMS Carmel H3760 .
21 And Elijah H452 came H5066 unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , How long H5704 PREP halt H6452 ye H859 PPRO-2MS between H5921 PREP two H8147 ONUM opinions H5587 ? if H518 PART the LORD H3068 EDS be God H430 D-NAME-4MP , follow H1980 VQI2MP him : but if H518 PART Baal H1168 , then follow H1980 VQI2MP him . And the people H5971 answered H6030 VQQ3MP him not H3808 W-NPAR a word H1697 .
22 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Elijah H452 unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , I H589 PPRO-1MS , even I only H905 L-CMS-1MS , remain H3498 a prophet H5030 of the LORD H3068 L-EDS ; but Baal H1168 \'s prophets H5030 are four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP and fifty H2572 W-MMP men H376 NMS .
23 Let them therefore give H5414 us two H8147 ONUM bullocks H6499 ; and let them choose H977 one H259 bullock H6499 for themselves , and cut it in pieces H5408 , and lay H7760 it on H5921 PREP wood H6086 , and put H7760 VQY3MP no H3808 NADV fire H784 W-NMS under : and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will dress H6213 the other H259 bullock H6499 , and lay H5414 it on H5921 PREP wood H6086 , and put H7760 no H3808 NADV fire H784 W-NMS under :
24 And call H7121 ye on the name H8034 B-CMS of your gods H430 , and I H589 will call H7121 on the name H8034 of the LORD H3068 EDS : and the God H430 D-EDP that H834 RPRO answereth H6030 VQY3MS by fire H784 , let him H1931 PPRO-3MS be H1961 W-VQQ3MS God H430 D-EDP . And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MP , It is well H2896 AMS spoken H1697 .
25 And Elijah H452 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the prophets H5030 of Baal H1168 , Choose H977 you one H259 D-AMS bullock H6499 for yourselves , and dress H6213 it first H7223 ; for H3588 CONJ ye H859 PPRO-2MS are many H7227 ; and call H7121 on the name H8034 B-CMS of your gods H430 , but put H7760 no H3808 NADV fire H784 W-NMS under .
26 And they took H3947 W-VQY3MP the bullock H6499 which H834 RPRO was given H5414 VQQ3MS them , and they dressed H6213 W-EMS it , and called H7121 W-VQY3MP on the name H8034 of Baal H1168 from morning H1242 even until H5704 W-PREP noon H6672 , saying H559 L-VQFC , O Baal H1168 , hear H6030 us . But there was no H369 W-NPAR voice H6963 CMS , nor H369 W-NPAR any that answered H6030 . And they leaped H6452 upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS which H834 RPRO was made H6213 VQQ3MS .
27 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at noon H6672 , that Elijah H452 mocked H2048 them , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Cry H7121 aloud H6963 : for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is a god H430 EDP ; either H3588 CONJ he is talking H7879 , or H3588 CONJ he is pursuing H7873 , or H3588 CONJ he is in a journey H1870 , or peradventure H194 ADV he H1931 PPRO-3MS sleepeth H3463 , and must be awaked H3364 .
28 And they cried H7121 aloud H6963 B-NMS , and cut themselves H1413 after their manner H4941 with knives H2719 and lancets H7420 , till H5704 PREP the blood H1818 NMS gushed out H8210 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
29 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , when midday H6672 was past H5674 , and they prophesied H5012 until H5704 PREP the time of the offering H5927 L-VQFC of the evening sacrifice H4503 , that there was neither H369 W-ADV voice H6963 CMS , nor H369 W-NPAR any to answer H6030 , nor H369 W-NPAR any that regarded H7182 .
30 And Elijah H452 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto all H3605 L-CMS the people H5971 , Come near H5066 unto H413 PREP-1MS me . And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 came near H5066 unto H413 PREP-3MS him . And he repaired H7495 the altar H4196 of the LORD H3068 EDS that was broken down H2040 .
31 And Elijah H452 took H3947 W-VQY3MS twelve H8147 MFS stones H68 NFP , according to the number H4557 of the tribes H7626 of the sons H1121 of Jacob H3290 , unto H413 PREP-3MS whom H834 RPRO the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 VQQ3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Israel H3478 shall be H1961 VQY3MS thy name H8034 :
32 And with H854 PREP the stones H68 he built H1129 an altar H4196 NMS in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : and he made H6213 W-VQY3MS a trench H8585 NFS about H5439 ADV the altar H4196 , as great as would contain H1004 two measures H5429 of seed H2233 NMS .
33 And he put H6186 the wood H6086 in order , and cut H5408 the bullock H6499 in pieces , and laid H7760 W-VQY3MS him on H5921 PREP the wood H6086 , and said H559 , Fill H4390 four H702 barrels H3537 with water H4325 , and pour H3332 it on H5921 PREP the burnt sacrifice H5930 , and on H5921 PREP the wood H6086 .
34 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Do it the second time H8138 . And they did it the second time H8138 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Do it the third time H8027 . And they did it the third time H8027 .
35 And the water H4325 D-CMS ran H1980 W-VQY3MP round about H5439 ADV the altar H4196 ; and he filled H4390 VPQ3MS the trench H8585 also H1571 W-CONJ with water H4325 D-CMS .
36 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the time of the offering H5927 B-CFP of the evening sacrifice H4503 , that Elijah H452 the prophet H5030 came near H5066 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , LORD H3068 EDS God H430 NAME-4MP of Abraham H85 , Isaac H3327 , and of Israel H3478 , let it be known H3045 this day H3117 D-AMS that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art God H430 EDP in Israel H3478 , and that I H589 W-PPRO-1MS am thy servant H5650 , and that I have done H6213 VQQ1MS all H3605 NMS these H428 things H1697 at thy word H1697 AMP .
37 Hear H6030 me , O LORD H3068 EDS , hear H6030 me , that this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 D-EDP , and that thou H859 PPRO-2FS hast turned H5437 their heart H3820 CMS-3MP back again H322 .
38 Then the fire H784 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS fell H5307 W-VQY3FS , and consumed H398 W-VQY3FS the burnt sacrifice H5930 , and the wood H6086 , and the stones H68 , and the dust H6083 , and licked up H3897 the water H4325 D-CMS that H834 RPRO was in the trench H8585 .
39 And when all H3605 NMS the people H5971 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS it , they fell H5307 W-VQY3MP on H5921 PREP their faces H6440 CMP-3MP : and they said H559 W-VQY3MP , The LORD H3068 EDS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the God H430 D-EDP ; the LORD H3068 EDS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is the God H430 .
40 And Elijah H452 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Take H8610 the prophets H5030 of Baal H1168 ; let not H408 NPAR one H376 NMS of them H4480 escape H4422 . And they took H8610 them : and Elijah H452 brought them down H3381 to H413 PREP the brook H5158 NMS Kishon H7028 , and slew H7819 them there H8033 ADV .
41 And Elijah H452 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Ahab H256 , Get thee up H5927 , eat H398 and drink H8354 ; for H3588 CONJ there is a sound H6963 CMS of abundance H1995 of rain H1653 .
42 So Ahab H256 went up H5927 to eat H398 L-VQFC and to drink H8354 WL-VQFC . And Elijah H452 went up H5927 to H413 PREP the top H7218 NMS of Carmel H3760 ; and he cast himself down H1457 upon the earth H776 NFS-3FS , and put H7760 W-VQY3MS his face H6440 CMP-3MS between H996 PREP his knees H1290 ,
43 And said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP his servant H5288 , Go up H5927 now H4994 IJEC , look H5027 VHI2MS toward H1870 the sea H3220 NMS . And he went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and looked H5027 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , There is nothing H369 NPAR . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go again H7725 seven H7651 MFS times H6471 .
44 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS at the seventh time H7637 , that he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , there ariseth H5927 a little H6996 cloud H5645 NCS out of the sea H3220 M-NMS , like a man H376 NMS \'s hand H3709 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go up H5927 , say H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Ahab H256 , Prepare H631 thy chariot , and get thee down H3381 , that the rain H1653 stop H6113 thee not H3808 W-NPAR .
45 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the meanwhile H5704 PREP , that the heaven H8064 was black H6937 with clouds H5645 NMP and wind H7307 W-GFS , and there was H1961 W-VQY3MS a great H1419 AMS rain H1653 . And Ahab H256 rode H7392 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to Jezreel H3157 .
46 And the hand H3027 of the LORD H3068 EDS was H1961 VQP3FS on H413 PREP Elijah H452 ; and he girded up H8151 his loins H4975 , and ran H7323 before H6440 L-CMP Ahab H256 to H5704 PREP the entrance H935 VQFC-2MS of Jezreel H3157 .
