2 Samuel 18:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Then David mustered the men who were with him, and set over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds.
2 And David divided the army into three groups: one third under the command of Joab, one third under the command of Abishai son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and one third under the command of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the men, "I myself will also go out with you."
3 But the men said, "You shall not go out. For if we flee, they will not care about us. If half of us die, they will not care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us; therefore it is better that you send us help from the city."
4 The king said to them, "Whatever seems best to you I will do." So the king stood at the side of the gate, while all the army marched out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 The king ordered Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king gave orders to all the commanders concerning Absalom.
6 So the army went out into the field against Israel; and the battle was fought in the forest of Ephraim.
7 The men of Israel were defeated there by the servants of David, and the slaughter there was great on that day, twenty thousand men.
8 The battle spread over the face of all the country; and the forest claimed more victims that day than the sword.
9 Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. His head caught fast in the oak, and he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him went on.
10 A man saw it, and told Joab, "I saw Absalom hanging in an oak."
11 Joab said to the man who told him, "What, you saw him! Why then did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have been glad to give you ten pieces of silver and a belt."
12 But the man said to Joab, "Even if I felt in my hand the weight of a thousand pieces of silver, I would not raise my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying: For my sake protect the young man Absalom!
13 On the other hand, if I had dealt treacherously against his life (and there is nothing hidden from the king), then you yourself would have stood aloof."
14 Joab said, "I will not waste time like this with you." He took three spears in his hand, and thrust them into the heart of Absalom, while he was still alive in the oak.
15 And ten young men, Joab's armor-bearers, surrounded Absalom and struck him, and killed him.
16 Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and the troops came back from pursuing Israel, for Joab restrained the troops.
17 They took Absalom, threw him into a great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Meanwhile all the Israelites fled to their homes.
18 Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and set up for himself a pillar that is in the King's Valley, for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in remembrance"; he called the pillar by his own name. It is called Absalom's Monument to this day.
19 Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, "Let me run, and carry tidings to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the power of his enemies."
20 Joab said to him, "You are not to carry tidings today; you may carry tidings another day, but today you shall not do so, because the king's son is dead."
21 Then Joab said to a Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed before Joab, and ran.
22 Then Ahimaaz son of Zadok said again to Joab, "Come what may, let me also run after the Cushite." And Joab said, "Why will you run, my son, seeing that you have no reward for the tidings?"
23 "Come what may," he said, "I will run." So he said to him, "Run." Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.
24 Now David was sitting between the two gates. The sentinel went up to the roof of the gate by the wall, and when he looked up, he saw a man running alone.
25 The sentinel shouted and told the king. The king said, "If he is alone, there are tidings in his mouth." He kept coming, and drew near.
26 Then the sentinel saw another man running; and the sentinel called to the gatekeeper and said, "See, another man running alone!" The king said, "He also is bringing tidings."
27 The sentinel said, "I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz son of Zadok." The king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good tidings."
28 Then Ahimaaz cried out to the king, "All is well!" He prostrated himself before the king with his face to the ground, and said, "Blessed be the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who raised their hand against my lord the king."
29 The king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" Ahimaaz answered, "When Joab sent your servant, I saw a great tumult, but I do not know what it was."
30 The king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." So he turned aside, and stood still.
31 Then the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, "Good tidings for my lord the king! For the LORD has vindicated you this day, delivering you from the power of all who rose up against you."
32 The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up to do you harm, be like that young man."
33 The king was deeply moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept; and as he went, he said, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!"

2 And David H1732 MMS sent forth H7971 W-VPY3MS a third part H7992 of the people H5971 under the hand H3027 B-CFS of Joab H3097 , and a third part H7992 under the hand H3027 B-CFS of Abishai H52 the son H1121 of Zeruiah H6870 , Joab H3097 \'s brother H251 CMS , and a third part H7992 under the hand H3027 B-CFS of Ittai H863 the Gittite H1663 . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , I will surely go forth with H5973 you myself H589 PPRO-1MS also H1571 CONJ .
3 But the people H5971 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV go forth H3318 : for H3588 CONJ if H518 PART we flee away H5127 , they will not H3808 NADV care H7760 VQY3MP for H413 us ; neither H3808 ADV if H518 PART half H2677 of us die H4191 VQY3MP , will they care H7760 VQY3MP for H413 us : but H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV thou art worth H3644 ten H6235 thousand H505 MMP of us : therefore now H6258 W-ADV it is better H2896 AMS that H3588 CONJ thou succor H5826 us out of the city H5892 M-NFS .
4 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , What H834 RPRO seemeth H5869 you best H3190 I will do H6213 . And the king H4428 D-NMS stood H5975 W-VQY3MS by H413 PREP the gate H8179 side H3027 CFS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 came out H3318 by hundreds H3967 and by thousands H505 .
5 And the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS Joab H3097 and Abishai H52 and Ittai H863 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Deal gently H328 for my sake with the young man H5288 , even with Absalom H53 . And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 heard H8085 VQQ3MP when the king H4428 D-NMS gave all H3605 NMS the captains H8269 charge H6680 concerning H5921 PREP Absalom H53 .
6 So the people H5971 went out H3318 W-VQY3MS into the field H7704 D-NMS against H7125 L-VQFC Israel H3478 : and the battle H4421 was H1961 W-VQY3FS in the wood H3293 of Ephraim H669 ;
7 Where H8033 ADV the people H5971 NMS of Israel H3478 were slain H5062 before H6440 L-CMP the servants H5650 of David H1732 , and there was H1961 W-VQY3FS there H8033 ADV a great H1419 AFS slaughter H4046 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS of twenty H6242 thousand H505 MMS men .
8 For the battle H4421 was H1961 W-VQY3FS there H8033 ADV scattered H6327 over H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of all H3605 CMS the country H776 D-GFS : and the wood H3293 devoured H398 L-VQFC more H7235 people H5971 that H1931 day H3117 B-AMS than the sword H2719 D-GFS devoured H398 VQQ3FS .
9 And Absalom H53 met H7122 the servants H5650 of David H1732 . And Absalom H53 rode H7392 upon H5921 PREP a mule H6505 , and the mule H6505 went H935 W-VQY3MS under H8478 NMS the thick boughs H7730 of a great H1419 D-AFS oak H424 , and his head H7218 CMS-3MS caught hold H2388 of the oak H424 , and he was taken up H5414 between H996 PREP the heaven H8064 D-NMD and the earth H776 D-GFS ; and the mule H6505 that H834 RPRO was under H8478 NMS him went away H5674 .
10 And a certain H259 MMS man H376 NMS saw H7200 W-VIY3MS it , and told H5046 W-VHY3MS Joab H3097 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , I saw H7200 W-VIY3MS Absalom H53 hanged H8518 in an oak H424 .
11 And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the man H376 LD-NMS that told H5046 him , And , behold H2009 IJEC , thou sawest H7200 VQQ2MS him , and why H4069 didst thou not H3808 ADV smite H5221 him there H8033 ADV to the ground H776 NFS-3FS ? and I would have given H5414 thee ten H6235 shekels of silver H3701 , and a H259 girdle H2290 .
12 And the man H376 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joab H3097 , Though H3863 I H595 PPRO-1MS should receive H8254 a thousand H505 W-BMS shekels of silver H3701 NMS in H5921 PREP mine hand H3709 , yet would I not H3808 ADV put forth H7971 mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS against H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS \'s son H1121 : for H3588 CONJ in our hearing H241 the king H4428 D-NMS charged H6680 VPQ3MS thee and Abishai H52 and Ittai H863 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Beware that none H8104 touch the young man H5288 Absalom H53 .
13 Otherwise H176 CONJ I should have wrought H6213 VQQ1MS falsehood H8267 NMS against mine own life H5315 : for there is no matter H3605 W-CMS hid H3582 from H4480 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and thou thyself H859 W-PPRO-2MS wouldest have set thyself H3320 against H5048 me .
14 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Joab H3097 , I may not H3808 NADV tarry H3176 thus H3651 ADV with H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee . And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS three H7969 NFS darts H7626 in his hand H3709 , and thrust H8628 them through the heart H3820 of Absalom H53 , while H5750 he was yet alive H2416 AMS in the midst H3820 of the oak H424 .
15 And ten H6235 young men H5288 NMP that bore H5375 Joab H3097 \'s armor H3627 compassed about H5437 and smote H5221 W-VHY3MP Absalom H53 , and slew H4191 him .
16 And Joab H3097 blew H8628 the trumpet H7782 , and the people H5971 returned H7725 from pursuing H7291 after H310 PREP Israel H3478 : for H3588 CONJ Joab H3097 held back H2820 the people H5971 D-NMS .
17 And they took H3947 W-VQY3MP Absalom H53 , and cast H7993 him into H413 PREP a great H1419 AMS pit H6354 in the wood H3293 , and laid H5324 a very H3966 ADV great H1419 AMS heap H1530 NMS of stones H68 NFP upon H5921 PREP-3MS him : and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 fled H5127 every one H376 NMS to his tent H168 .
18 Now Absalom H53 in his lifetime H2416 had taken H3947 VQQ3MS and reared up H5324 for himself a pillar H4678 , which H834 RPRO is in the king H4428 D-NMS \'s dale H6010 : for H3588 CONJ he said H559 VQQ3MS , I have no H369 ADV son H1121 to H5668 B-NMS keep my name in remembrance H2142 : and he called H7121 W-VQY3MS the pillar H4678 after H5921 PREP his own name H8034 : and it is called H7121 W-VQY3MS unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS , Absalom H53 \'s place H3027 CFS .
19 Then said H559 VQQ3MS Ahimaaz H290 the son H1121 of Zadok H6659 , Let me now H4994 IJEC run H7323 , and bear H1319 the king H4428 D-NMS tidings , how that H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath avenged H8199 him of his enemies H341 .
20 And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS shalt not H3808 NADV bear tidings H1309 this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 B-NMS , but thou shalt bear tidings H1319 another H312 AMS day H3117 B-NMS : but this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 B-NMS thou shalt bear no tidings H1319 , because H5921 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS \'s son H1121 is dead H4191 .
21 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Joab H3097 to Cushi H3569 , Go H1980 VQI2MS tell H5046 VHI2MS the king H4428 what H834 RPRO thou hast seen H7200 . And Cushi H3569 bowed himself H7812 unto Joab H3097 , and ran H7323 .
22 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Ahimaaz H290 the son H1121 NMS-1MS of Zadok H6659 yet H5750 ADV again H3254 W-VHPMS to H413 PREP Joab H3097 , But howsoever H4100 IGAT , let me , I H589 PPRO-1MS pray H4994 IJEC thee , also H1571 CONJ run H7323 after H310 PREP Cushi H3569 . And Joab H3097 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4100 L-IGAT wilt thou H859 PPRO-2MS run H7323 VQPMS , my son H1121 NMS-1MS , seeing that thou hast no H369 NPAR tidings H1309 ready H4672 ?
23 But howsoever H4100 IGAT , said he , let me run H7323 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Run H7323 . Then Ahimaaz H290 ran H7323 by the way H1870 NMS of the plain H3603 D-NFS , and overran H5674 Cushi H3569 .
24 And David H1732 sat H3427 VQPMS between H996 PREP the two H8147 ONUM gates H8179 : and the watchman H6822 went up H1980 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the roof H1406 over the gate H8179 unto H413 PREP the wall H2346 , and lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , and looked H7200 W-VIY3MS , and behold H2009 IJEC a man H376 NMS running H7323 VQPMS alone H905 .
25 And the watchman H6822 cried H7121 W-VQY3MS , and told H5046 W-VHY3MS the king H4428 . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART he be alone H905 L-CMS-3MS , there is tidings H1309 in his mouth H6310 B-CMS-3MS . And he came H1980 W-VQY3MS apace H1980 VQFA , and drew near H7131 .
26 And the watchman H6822 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS another H312 AMS man H376 NMS running H7323 VQPMS : and the watchman H6822 called H7121 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the porter H7778 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC another man H376 NMS running H7323 VQPMS alone H905 L-CMS-3MS . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , He H2088 DPRO also H1571 CONJ bringeth tidings H1319 .
27 And the watchman H6822 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Me H589 PPRO-1MS thinketh H7200 VQPMS the running H4794 of the foremost H7223 is like the running H4794 of Ahimaaz H290 the son H1121 of Zadok H6659 . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , He H2088 DPRO is a good H2896 AMS man H376 NMS , and cometh H935 VQY3MS with good H2896 AMS tidings H1309 .
28 And Ahimaaz H290 called H7121 W-VQY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , All is well H7965 NMS . And he fell down H7821 to the earth H776 NFS-3FS upon his face H639 before the king H4428 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Blessed H1288 VWQ3MS be the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS , which H834 RPRO hath delivered up H5462 the men H376 D-NMP that H834 RPRO lifted up H5375 VQQ3MP their hand H3027 against my lord H113 the king H4428 .
29 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is the young man H5288 Absalom H53 safe H7965 NMS ? And Ahimaaz H290 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , When Joab H3097 sent H7971 the king H4428 D-NMS \'s servant H5650 NMS , and me thy servant H5650 , I saw H7200 VQQ1MS a great H1419 D-AMS tumult H1995 , but I knew H3045 VQY1MS not H3808 W-NPAR what H4100 IGAT it was .
30 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Turn aside H5437 , and stand H3320 here H3541 . And he turned aside H5437 , and stood still H5975 .
31 And , behold H2009 IJEC , Cushi H3569 came H935 VQPMS ; and Cushi H3569 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Tidings H1319 , my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath avenged H8199 thee this day H3117 D-AMS of M-GFS all H3605 NMS them that rose up H6965 against H5921 PREP-2MS thee .
32 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Cushi H3569 , Is the young man H5288 Absalom H53 safe H7965 ? And Cushi H3569 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , The enemies H341 of my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO rise H6965 VQQ3MP against H5921 PREP-2MS thee to do thee hurt H7451 , be H1961 VQY3MP as that young man H5288 is .
33 And the king H4428 D-NMS was much moved H7264 , and went up H5927 W-VHY3MS to H5921 PREP the chamber H5944 over the gate H8179 , and wept H1058 : and as he went H1980 , thus H3541 he said H559 VQQ3MS , O my son H1121 NMS-1MS Absalom H53 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS , my son H1121 NMS-1MS Absalom H53 ! would God H4310 IPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS had died H4191 for H8478 thee , O Absalom H53 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS , my son H1121 NMS-1MS !
