Jeremiah 16:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 The word of the LORD came to me:
2 You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.
3 For thus says the LORD concerning the sons and daughters who are born in this place, and concerning the mothers who bear them and the fathers who beget them in this land:
4 They shall die of deadly diseases. They shall not be lamented, nor shall they be buried; they shall become like dung on the surface of the ground. They shall perish by the sword and by famine, and their dead bodies shall become food for the birds of the air and for the wild animals of the earth.
5 For thus says the LORD: Do not enter the house of mourning, or go to lament, or bemoan them; for I have taken away my peace from this people, says the LORD, my steadfast love and mercy.
6 Both great and small shall die in this land; they shall not be buried, and no one shall lament for them; there shall be no gashing, no shaving of the head for them.
7 No one shall break bread for the mourner, to offer comfort for the dead; nor shall anyone give them the cup of consolation to drink for their fathers or their mothers.
8 You shall not go into the house of feasting to sit with them, to eat and drink.
9 For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I am going to banish from this place, in your days and before your eyes, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.
10 And when you tell this people all these words, and they say to you, "Why has the LORD pronounced all this great evil against us? What is our iniquity? What is the sin that we have committed against the LORD our God?"
11 then you shall say to them: It is because your ancestors have forsaken me, says the LORD, and have gone after other gods and have served and worshiped them, and have forsaken me and have not kept my law;
12 and because you have behaved worse than your ancestors, for here you are, every one of you, following your stubborn evil will, refusing to listen to me.
13 Therefore I will hurl you out of this land into a land that neither you nor your ancestors have known, and there you shall serve other gods day and night, for I will show you no favor.
14 Therefore, the days are surely coming, says the LORD, when it shall no longer be said, "As the LORD lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of Egypt,"
15 but "As the LORD lives who brought the people of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the lands where he had driven them." For I will bring them back to their own land that I gave to their ancestors.
16 I am now sending for many fishermen, says the LORD, and they shall catch them; and afterward I will send for many hunters, and they shall hunt them from every mountain and every hill, and out of the clefts of the rocks.
17 For my eyes are on all their ways; they are not hidden from my presence, nor is their iniquity concealed from my sight.
18 And I will doubly repay their iniquity and their sin, because they have polluted my land with the carcasses of their detestable idols, and have filled my inheritance with their abominations.
19 O LORD, my strength and my stronghold, my refuge in the day of trouble, to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say: Our ancestors have inherited nothing but lies, worthless things in which there is no profit.
20 Can mortals make for themselves gods? Such are no gods!
21 "Therefore I am surely going to teach them, this time I am going to teach them my power and my might, and they shall know that my name is the LORD."

2 Thou shalt not H3808 ADV take H3947 thee a wife H802 NFS , neither H3808 ADV shalt thou have H1961 VQY3MP sons H1121 NMP or daughters H1323 W-CFP in this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 .
3 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS concerning H5921 PREP the sons H1121 and concerning H5921 PREP the daughters H1323 that are born H3209 in this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 , and concerning H5921 PREP their mothers H517 that bore H3205 them , and concerning H5921 PREP their fathers H1 CMP-3MP that begot H3205 them in this H2088 D-PMS land H776 B-NFS ;
4 They shall die H4191 VQY3MP of grievous H8463 deaths H4463 ; they shall not H3808 NADV be lamented H5594 ; neither H3808 W-NADV shall they be buried H6912 VNY3MP ; but they shall be as dung H1828 upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the earth H127 D-NFS : and they shall be H1961 consumed H3615 by the sword H2719 , and by famine H7458 ; and their carcasses H5038 shall be meat H3978 L-NMS for the fowls H5775 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and for the beasts H929 of the earth H776 D-GFS .
5 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Enter H935 VQY2MS not H408 NPAR into the house H1004 CMS of mourning H4798 , neither H408 ADV go H1980 VQY2MS to lament H5594 nor H408 ADV bemoan H5110 them : for H3588 CONJ I have taken away H622 my peace H7965 from this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , even lovingkindness H2617 and mercies H7356 .
6 Both the great H1419 and the small H6996 shall die H4191 in this H2063 D-DFS land H776 B-NFS : they shall not H3808 NADV be buried H6912 VNY3MP , neither H3808 ADV shall men lament H5594 for them : nor H3808 W-NADV cut themselves H1413 , nor H3808 W-NADV make themselves bald H7139 for them :
7 Neither H3808 W-NPAR shall men tear H6536 themselves for them in H5921 PREP mourning H60 , to comfort H5162 them for H5921 PREP the dead H4191 ; neither H3808 W-NPAR shall men give them the cup H3563 of consolation H8575 to drink H8248 for H5921 PREP their father H1 CMS-3MS or for H5921 PREP their mother H517 CFS-3MS .
8 Thou shalt not H3808 NADV also go H935 VQY3FS into the house H1004 W-NMS of feasting H4960 NMS , to sit H3427 L-VQFC with H854 them to eat H398 L-VQFC and to drink H8354 .
9 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Behold H2009 , I will cause to cease H7673 out of H4480 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS in your eyes H5869 , and in your days H3117 , the voice H6963 CMS of mirth H8342 , and the voice H6963 W-CMS of gladness H8057 , the voice H6963 CMS of the bridegroom H2860 , and the voice H6963 W-CMS of the bride H3618 .
10 And it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when H3588 CONJ thou shalt show H5046 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 all H3605 NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP , and they shall say H559 W-VQQ3MP unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , Wherefore H4100 IPRO hath the LORD H3068 EDS pronounced H1696 all H3605 NMS this H2063 D-DFS great H1419 D-AFS evil H7451 D-AFS against H5921 PREP us ? or what H4100 W-IGAT is our iniquity H5771 ? or what H4100 W-IGAT is our sin H2403 that H834 RPRO we have committed H2398 against the LORD H3068 L-EDS our God H430 ?
11 Then shalt thou say H559 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Because H5921 PREP your fathers H1 have forsaken H5800 me , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , and have walked H1980 W-VQY3MP after H310 PREP other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , and have served H5647 them , and have worshiped H7812 them , and have forsaken H5800 me , and have not H3808 NADV kept H8104 my law H8451 CFS-1MS ;
12 And ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP have done H6213 L-VQFC worse H7489 than your fathers H1 ; for , behold H2009 , ye walk H1980 every one H376 NMS after H310 PREP the imagination H8307 of his evil H7451 D-AMS heart H3820 CMS-3MS , that they may not H1115 L-NPAR hearken H8085 unto H413 me :
13 Therefore will I cast H2904 you out of M-PREP this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS into H5921 M-PREP a land H776 D-GFS that H834 RPRO ye know H3045 not H3808 NADV , neither ye H859 PPRO-2MS nor your fathers H1 ; and there H8033 ADV shall ye serve H5647 other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP day H3119 ADV and night H3915 W-NMS ; where H834 RPRO I will not H3808 ADV show H5414 VQY1MS you favor H2594 .
14 Therefore H3651 L-ADV , behold H2009 IJEC , the days H3117 NMP come H935 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that it shall no H3808 W-NPAR more H5750 ADV be said H559 , The LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , that H834 RPRO brought up H5927 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 ;
15 But H518 PART , The LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , that H834 RPRO brought up H5927 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 from the land H776 M-NFS of the north H6828 NFS , and from all H3605 WM-CMS the lands H776 whither H834 RPRO he had driven H5080 them : and I will bring them again H7725 into H5921 PREP their land H127 that H834 RPRO I gave H5414 VQQ1MS unto their fathers H1 .
16 Behold H2009 , I will send H7971 for many H7227 AMP fishers H1771 , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , and they shall fish H1770 them ; and after H310 will I send H7971 for many H7227 hunters H6719 , and they shall hunt H6679 them from M-PREP every H3605 NMS mountain H2022 CMS , and from M-PREP every H3605 NMS hill H1389 , and out of the holes H5357 of the rocks H5553 .
17 For H3588 CONJ mine eyes H5869 CMD-1MS are upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS their ways H1870 : they are not H3808 NADV hid H5641 from my face H6440 , neither H3808 ADV is their iniquity H5771 hid H6845 from M-PREP mine eyes H5869 .
18 And first H7223 I will recompense H7999 their iniquity H5771 and their sin H2403 double H4932 ; because H5921 PREP they have defiled H2490 my land H776 , they have filled H4390 VQQ3MP mine inheritance H5159 with the carcasses H5038 of their detestable H8251 and abominable things H8441 .
19 O LORD H3068 EDS , my strength H5797 , and my fortress H4581 , and my refuge H4498 in the day H3117 B-NMS of affliction H6869 NFS , the Gentiles H1471 NMP shall come H935 VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-2MS thee from the ends H657 of the earth H776 NFS , and shall say H559 W-VQY3MP , Surely H389 ADV our fathers H1 have inherited H5157 lies H8267 NMS , vanity H1892 NMS , and things wherein there is no H369 W-ADV profit H3276 .
20 Shall a man H120 NMS make H6213 gods H430 EDP unto himself , and they H1992 are no H3808 NADV gods H430 NAME-4MP ?
21 Therefore H3651 L-ADV , behold H2009 , I will this H2063 D-DFS once H6471 cause them to know H3045 , I will cause them to know H3045 mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS and my might H1369 ; and they shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ my name H8034 is The LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
