Joshua 11:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 When King Jabin of Hazor heard of this, he sent to King Jobab of Madon, to the king of Shimron, to the king of Achshaph,
2 and to the kings who were in the northern hill country, and in the Arabah south of Chinneroth, and in the lowland, and in Naphoth-dor on the west,
3 to the Canaanites in the east and the west, the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Jebusites in the hill country, and the Hivites under Hermon in the land of Mizpah.
4 They came out, with all their troops, a great army, in number like the sand on the seashore, with very many horses and chariots.
5 All these kings joined their forces, and came and camped together at the waters of Merom, to fight with Israel.
6 And the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them, for tomorrow at this time I will hand over all of them, slain, to Israel; you shall hamstring their horses, and burn their chariots with fire."
7 So Joshua came suddenly upon them with all his fighting force, by the waters of Merom, and fell upon them.
8 And the LORD handed them over to Israel, who attacked them and chased them as far as Great Sidon and Misrephoth-maim, and eastward as far as the valley of Mizpeh. They struck them down, until they had left no one remaining.
9 And Joshua did to them as the LORD commanded him; he hamstrung their horses, and burned their chariots with fire.
10 Joshua turned back at that time, and took Hazor, and struck its king down with the sword. Before that time Hazor was the head of all those kingdoms.
11 And they put to the sword all who were in it, utterly destroying them; there was no one left who breathed, and he burned Hazor with fire.
12 And all the towns of those kings, and all their kings, Joshua took, and struck them with the edge of the sword, utterly destroying them, as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded.
13 But Israel burned none of the towns that stood on mounds except Hazor, which Joshua did burn.
14 All the spoil of these towns, and the livestock, the Israelites took for their booty; but all the people they struck down with the edge of the sword, until they had destroyed them, and they did not leave any who breathed.
15 As the LORD had commanded his servant Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua, and so Joshua did; he left nothing undone of all that the LORD had commanded Moses.
16 So Joshua took all that land: the hill country and all the Negeb and all the land of Goshen and the lowland and the Arabah and the hill country of Israel and its lowland,
17 from Mount Halak, which rises toward Seir, as far as Baal-gad in the valley of Lebanon below Mount Hermon. He took all their kings, struck them down, and put them to death.
18 Joshua made war a long time with all those kings.
19 There was not a town that made peace with the Israelites, except the Hivites, the inhabitants of Gibeon; all were taken in battle.
20 For it was the LORD's doing to harden their hearts so that they would come against Israel in battle, in order that they might be utterly destroyed, and might receive no mercy, but be exterminated, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
21 At that time Joshua came and wiped out the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their towns.
22 None of the Anakim was left in the land of the Israelites; some remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.
23 So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had spoken to Moses; and Joshua gave it for an inheritance to Israel according to their tribal allotments. And the land had rest from war.

2 And to H413 W-PREP the kings H4428 that H834 RPRO were on the north H6828 of the mountains H2022 , and of the plains H6160 south H5045 of Chinneroth H3672 , and in the valley H8219 , and in the borders H5299 of Dor H1756 on the west H3220 ,
3 And to the Canaanite H3669 on the east H4217 and on the west H3220 , and to the Amorite H567 , and the Hittite H2850 , and the Perizzite H6522 WD-EMS , and the Jebusite H2983 in the mountains H2022 , and to the Hivite H2340 under H8478 NMS Hermon H2768 in the land H776 B-GFS of Mizpeh H4709 .
4 And they went out H3318 W-VQY3MP , they H1992 PPRO-3MP and all H3605 W-CMS their hosts H4264 with H5973 PREP-3MP them , much H7227 AMS people H5971 NMS , even as the sand H2344 that H834 RPRO is upon H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS shore H8193 CFS in multitude H7230 LD-NMS , with horses H5483 and chariots H7393 very H3966 ADV many H7227 AMS .
5 And when all H3605 NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 were met together H3259 W-VNY3MP , they came H935 W-VQY3MP and pitched H2583 W-VQY3MP together H3162 ADV-3MS at H413 PREP the waters H4325 of Merom H4792 , to fight H3898 against H5973 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
6 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , Be not H408 NPAR afraid H3372 because of L-CMP them : for H3588 CONJ tomorrow H4279 NMS about this H2063 D-DFS time H6256 KD-NMS will I H595 PPRO-1MS deliver them up H5414 VQPMS all H3605 CMS-3MP slain H2491 NMP before H6440 L-CMP Israel H3478 : thou shalt hamstring H6131 their horses H5483 , and burn H8313 their chariots H4818 with fire H784 .
7 So Joshua H3091 came H935 W-VQY3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 NMS of war H4421 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , against H5921 PREP them by H5921 PREP the waters H4325 of Merom H4792 suddenly H6597 ADV ; and they fell H5307 W-VQY3MP upon them .
8 And the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 them into the hand H3027 of Israel H3478 , who smote H5221 them , and chased H7291 them unto H5704 PREP great H7227 AFS Zidon H6721 , and unto H5704 PREP Misrephoth H4956 - maim , and unto H5704 PREP the valley H1237 of Mizpeh H4708 eastward H4217 ; and they smote H5221 them , until H5704 PREP they left H7604 them none H1115 PREP remaining H8300 .
9 And Joshua H3091 did H6213 W-VQY3MS unto them as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS bade H559 him : he hamstrung H6131 their horses H5483 , and burnt H8313 their chariots H4818 with fire H784 .
10 And Joshua H3091 at that H1931 PPRO-3FS time H6256 turned back H7725 , and took H3920 Hazor H2674 , and smote H5221 the king H4428 thereof with the sword H2719 : for H3588 CONJ Hazor H2674 formerly H6440 L-NMP was the head H7218 NMS of all H3605 NMS those H428 kingdoms H4467 .
11 And they smote H5221 W-VHY3MP all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , utterly destroying H2763 them : there was not H3808 NADV any H3605 NMS left H3498 to breathe H5397 : and he burnt H8313 Hazor H2674 with fire H784 .
12 And all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 of those H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 , and all H3605 NMS the kings H4428 of them , did Joshua H3091 take H3920 , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and he utterly destroyed H2763 them , as H834 K-RPRO Moses H4872 the servant H5650 NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS .
13 But H7535 ADV as for the cities H5892 that stood still H5975 in H5921 PREP their strength H8510 , Israel H3478 burned H8313 none H3808 NADV of them , save H2108 Hazor H2674 only H905 ; that did Joshua H3091 burn H8313 .
14 And all H3605 NMS the spoil H7998 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP cities H5892 , and the cattle H929 WD-NFS , the children H1121 of Israel H3478 took for a prey H962 unto themselves ; but H7535 ADV every H3605 NMS man H120 D-NMS they smote H5221 VHQ3MP with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , until H5704 PREP they had destroyed H8045 them , neither H3808 NADV left H7604 they any H3605 NMS to breathe H5397 .
15 As H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 his servant H5650 , so H3651 ADV did Moses H4872 command H6680 VPQ3MS Joshua H3091 , and so H3651 ADV did H6213 VQQ3MS Joshua H3091 ; he left nothing undone H5493 VHQ3MS of all H3605 M-CMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
16 So Joshua H3091 took H3947 W-VQY3MS all H3605 NMS that H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , the hills H2022 , and all H3605 NMS the south country H5045 D-NMS , and all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Goshen H1657 , and the valley H8219 , and the plain H6160 , and the mountain H2022 CMS of Israel H3478 , and the valley H8219 of the same ;
17 Even from H4480 PREP the mount H2022 Halak H2510 , that goeth up H5927 to Seir H8165 LFS , even unto H5704 W-PREP Baal H1171 - gad in the valley H1237 of Lebanon H3844 under H8478 NMS mount H2022 CMS Hermon H2768 : and all H3605 NMS their kings H4428 he took H3920 , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them , and slew H4191 them .
18 Joshua H3091 made H6213 VQQ3MS war H4421 a long H7227 AMP time H3117 NMP with H854 PREP all H3605 NMS those H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 .
19 There was H1961 VQQ3FS not H3808 ADV a city H5892 GFS that H834 RPRO made peace H7999 with H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , save H1115 PREP the Hivites H2340 the inhabitants H3427 of Gibeon H1391 : all H3605 other they took H3947 in battle H4421 .
20 For H3588 CONJ it was H1961 VQQ3FS of the LORD H3068 EDS to harden H2388 their hearts H3820 CMS-3MP , that they should come against H7125 L-VQFC Israel H3478 in battle H4421 , that H4616 L-CONJ he might destroy H2763 them utterly , and that they might have H1961 VQFC no H1115 L-NPAR favor H8467 , but H3588 CONJ that H4616 L-CONJ he might destroy H8045 them , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
21 And at that H1931 time H6256 came H935 W-VQY3MS Joshua H3091 , and cut off H3772 the Anakims H6062 from H4480 PREP the mountains H2022 , from H4480 PREP Hebron H2275 , from H4480 PREP Debir H1688 , from H4480 PREP Anab H6024 , and from all H3605 WM-CMS the mountains H2022 CMS of Judah H3063 , and from all H3605 WM-CMS the mountains H2022 CMS of Israel H3478 : Joshua H3091 destroyed H2763 them utterly with H5973 PREP their cities H5892 .
22 There was none H3808 ADV of the Anakims H6062 left H3498 in the land H776 B-GFS of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 : only H7535 ADV in Gaza H5804 , in Gath H1661 , and in Ashdod H795 , there remained H7604 .
23 So Joshua H3091 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the whole H3605 NMS land H776 D-GFS , according to all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS said H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 ; and Joshua H3091 gave H5414 it for an inheritance H5159 unto Israel H3478 according to their divisions H4256 by their tribes H7626 . And the land H776 WD-GFS rested H8252 from war H4421 .
