Mark 11:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 When they were approaching Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples
2 and said to them, "Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden; untie it and bring it.
3 If anyone says to you, 'Why are you doing this?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it and will send it back here immediately.'"
4 They went away and found a colt tied near a door, outside in the street. As they were untying it,
5 some of the bystanders said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?"
6 They told them what Jesus had said; and they allowed them to take it.
7 Then they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it; and he sat on it.
8 Many people spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut in the fields.
9 Then those who went ahead and those who followed were shouting, "Hosanna! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David! Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
11 Then he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple; and when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve.
12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry.
13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see whether perhaps he would find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs.
14 He said to it, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again." And his disciples heard it.
15 Then they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who were selling and those who were buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves;
16 and he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple.
17 He was teaching and saying, "Is it not written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations'? But you have made it a den of robbers."
18 And when the chief priests and the scribes heard it, they kept looking for a way to kill him; for they were afraid of him, because the whole crowd was spellbound by his teaching.
19 And when evening came, Jesus and his disciples went out of the city.
20 In the morning as they passed by, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.
21 Then Peter remembered and said to him, "Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered."
22 Jesus answered them, "Have faith in God.
23 Truly I tell you, if you say to this mountain, 'Be taken up and thrown into the sea,' and if you do not doubt in your heart, but believe that what you say will come to pass, it will be done for you.
24 So I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.
25 "Whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone; so that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses."

27 Again they came to Jerusalem. As he was walking in the temple, the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders came to him
28 and said, "By what authority are you doing these things? Who gave you this authority to do them?"
29 Jesus said to them, "I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
30 Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin? Answer me."
31 They argued with one another, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will say, 'Why then did you not believe him?'
32 But shall we say, 'Of human origin'?"-- they were afraid of the crowd, for all regarded John as truly a prophet.
33 So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things."

2 And G2532 CONJ saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Go your way G5217 V-PAM-2P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF village G2968 N-ASF over against G2713 ADV you G5216 P-2GP : and G2532 CONJ as soon as G2112 ADV ye be entered G1531 V-PNP-NPM into G1519 PREP it G846 P-ASF , ye shall find G2147 V-FAI-2P a colt G4454 N-ASM tied G1210 V-RPP-ASM , whereon G1909 PREP never G3762 A-NSM man G444 N-GPM sat G2523 V-RAI-3S ; loose G3089 V-AAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM , and bring G71 V-2AAM-2P him .
3 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND any man G5100 X-NSM say G2036 V-2AAS-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Why G5101 I-ASN do G4160 V-PAI-2P ye this G5124 D-ASN ? say G2036 V-2AAM-2P ye that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM hath G2192 V-PAI-3S need G5532 N-ASF of him G846 P-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV he will send G649 V-PAI-3S him G846 P-ASM hither G5602 ADV .
4 And G1161 CONJ they went their way G565 V-2AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ found G2147 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM tied G1210 V-RPP-ASM by G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASF door G2374 N-ASF without G1854 ADV in G1909 PREP a place where two ways met G296 N-GSN ; and G2532 CONJ they loose G3089 V-PAI-3P him G846 P-ASM .
5 And G2532 CONJ certain G5100 X-NPM of G3588 T-GPM them G3588 T-GPM that G3588 T-GPM stood G2476 V-RAP-GPM there G1563 ADV said G3004 V-IAI-3P unto them G846 P-DPM , What G5101 I-ASN do G4160 V-PAI-2P ye , loosing G3089 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM ?
6 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto them G846 P-DPM even as G2531 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM had commanded G1781 V-ADI-3S : and G2532 CONJ they let them go G863 V-AAI-3P .
7 And G2532 CONJ they brought G71 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM to G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ cast G1911 V-2AAI-3P their G3588 T-APN garments G2440 N-APN on him G846 P-DSM ; and G2532 CONJ he sat G2523 V-AAI-3S upon G1909 PREP him G846 P-GPM .
8 And G1161 CONJ many G4183 A-NPM spread G4766 V-AAI-3P their G3588 T-APN garments G2440 N-APN in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF way G3598 N-ASF : and G1161 CONJ others G243 A-NPM cut down G2875 V-IAI-3P branches G4746 N-APF off G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GPN trees G1186 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ strewed G4766 V-IAI-3P them in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF way G3598 N-ASF .
9 And G2532 CONJ they that went before G4254 V-PAP-NPM , and G2532 CONJ they that followed G190 V-PAP-NPM , cried G2896 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Hosanna G5614 HEB ; Blessed G2127 V-RPP-NSM is he that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM in G1722 PREP the name G3686 N-DSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM :
10 Blessed G2127 V-RPP-NSF be the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSM our G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM David G1138 N-PRI , that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSF in G1722 PREP the name G3686 N-DSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM : Hosanna G5614 HEB in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPN highest G5310 A-DPN .
11 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM entered G1525 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN temple G2411 N-ASN : and G2532 CONJ when he had looked round about G4017 V-AMP-NSM upon all things G3956 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ now G2235 ADV the G3588 T-GSF eventide G5610 N-GSF was come G5607 V-PXP-GSF , he went out G1831 V-2AAI-3S unto G1519 PREP Bethany G963 N-ASF with G3326 PREP the G3588 T-GPM twelve G1427 A-NUI .
12 And G2532 CONJ on the G3588 T-DSF morrow G1887 ADV , when they G846 P-GPM were come G1831 V-2AAP-GPM from G575 PREP Bethany G963 N-GSF , he was hungry G3983 V-AAI-3S :
13 And G2532 CONJ seeing G1492 V-2AAP-NSM a fig tree G4808 N-ASF afar off G3113 ADV having G2192 V-PAP-ASF leaves G5444 N-APN , he came G2064 V-2AAI-3S , if G1487 COND haply G686 PRT he might find G2147 V-FAI-3S anything G5100 X-ASN thereon G1722 PREP : and G2532 CONJ when he came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM to G1909 PREP it , he G846 P-DSF found G2147 V-2AAI-3S nothing G3762 A-ASN but G1508 leaves G5444 N-APN ; for G1063 CONJ the time G2540 N-NSM of figs G4810 N-GPN was G2258 V-IXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N yet .
14 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto it G846 P-DSF , No man G3367 A-NSM eat G5315 V-2AAO-3S fruit G2590 N-ASM of G1537 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS hereafter G3371 ADV forever G1519 PREP . And G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM heard G191 V-IAI-3P it .
15 And G2532 CONJ they come G2064 V-PNI-3P to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF : and G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM went G1525 V-2AAP-NSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN temple G2411 N-ASN , and began G756 V-ADI-3S to cast out G1544 V-PAN them that sold G4453 V-PAP-APM and G2532 CONJ bought G59 V-PAP-APM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ overthrew G2690 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-APF tables G5132 N-APF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM moneychangers G2855 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APF seats G2515 N-APF of G3588 T-APF them G3588 T-APF that G3588 T-APF sold G4453 V-PAP-GPM doves G4058 N-APF ;
16 And G2532 CONJ would not G3756 PRT-N suffer G863 V-IAI-3S that G2443 CONJ any man G5100 X-NSM should carry G1308 V-2AAS-3S any vessel G4632 N-ASN through G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSN temple G2411 N-GSN .
17 And G2532 CONJ he taught G1321 V-IAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , Is it not G3756 PRT-N written G1125 V-RPI-3S , My G3588 T-NSM house G3624 N-NSM shall be called G2564 V-FPI-3S of G3588 T-DPN all G3956 A-DPN nations G1484 N-DPN the house G3624 N-NSM of prayer G4335 N-GSF ? but G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP have made G4160 V-AAI-2P it G846 P-ASM a den G4693 N-ASN of thieves G3027 N-GPM .
18 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ chief priests G749 N-NPM heard G191 V-AAI-3P it , and G2532 CONJ sought G2212 V-IAI-3P how G4459 ADV-I they might destroy G622 V-AAS-3P him G846 P-ASM : for G1063 CONJ they feared G5399 V-INI-3P him G846 P-ASM , because G3754 CONJ all G3956 A-NSM the G3588 T-NSM people G3793 N-NSM was astonished G1605 V-IPI-3S at G1909 PREP his G3588 T-DSF doctrine G1322 N-DSF .
19 And G2532 CONJ when G3753 ADV even G3796 ADV was come G1096 V-2ADI-3S , he went G1607 V-INI-3S out G1854 ADV of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF city G4172 N-GSF .
20 And G2532 CONJ in the morning G4404 ADV , as they passed by G3899 V-PNP-NPM , they saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF fig tree G4808 N-ASF dried up G3583 V-RPP-ASF from G1537 PREP the roots G4491 N-GPF .
21 And G2532 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM calling to remembrance G363 V-AOP-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Master G4461 HEB , behold G2396 , the G3588 T-NSF fig tree G4808 N-NSF which G3739 R-ASF thou cursedst G2672 V-ADI-2S is withered away G3583 V-RPI-3S .
22 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answering G611 V-AOP-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Have G2192 V-PAM-2P faith G4102 N-ASF in God G2316 N-GSM .
23 For G1063 CONJ verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall say G2036 V-2AAS-3S unto this G3588 T-DSN mountain G3735 N-DSN , Be thou removed G142 V-APM-2S , and G2532 CONJ be thou cast G906 V-APM-2S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF sea G2281 N-ASF ; and G2532 CONJ shall not G3361 PRT-N doubt G1252 V-APS-3S in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF heart G2588 N-DSF , but G235 CONJ shall believe G4100 V-AAS-3S that G3754 CONJ those things which G3739 R-NPN he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S shall come to pass G1096 V-PNI-3S ; he G846 P-GSM shall have G2071 V-FXI-3S whatsoever G3739 R-ASN he saith G2036 V-2AAS-3S .
24 Therefore G1223 PREP I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , What things soever G3956 A-APN ye desire G154 V-PPS-2P , when ye pray G4336 V-PNP-NPM , believe G4100 V-PAM-2P that G3754 CONJ ye receive G2983 V-PAI-2P them , and G2532 CONJ ye G5213 P-2DP shall have G2071 V-FXI-3S them .
25 And G2532 CONJ when G3752 CONJ ye stand G4739 V-PAS-2P praying G4336 V-PNP-NPM , forgive G863 V-PAM-2P , if G1487 COND ye have G2192 V-PAI-2P aught G5100 X-ASN against G2596 PREP any G5100 X-GSM : that G2443 CONJ your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM also G2532 CONJ which G3588 T-NSM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM may forgive G863 V-2AAS-3S you G5213 P-2DP your G3588 T-APN trespasses G3900 N-APN .
26 But G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND ye G5210 P-2NP do not G3756 PRT-N forgive G863 V-PAI-2P , neither G3761 ADV will your G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM which G3588 T-NSM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM forgive G863 V-FAI-3S your G3588 T-APN trespasses G3900 N-APN .
27 And G2532 CONJ they come G2064 V-PNI-3P again G3825 ADV to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF : and G2532 CONJ as he G846 P-GSM was walking G4043 V-PAP-GSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , there come G2064 V-PNI-3P to G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM elders G4245 A-NPM ,
28 And G2532 CONJ say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , By G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF authority G1849 N-DSF doest G4160 V-PAI-2S thou these things G5023 D-APN ? and G2532 CONJ who G5101 I-NSM gave G1325 V-AAI-3S thee G4671 P-2DS this G3588 T-ASF authority G1849 N-ASF to G2443 CONJ do G4160 V-PAS-2S these things G5023 D-APN ?
29 And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , I will also ask G2504 of you G5209 P-2AP one G1520 A-ASM question G3056 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ answer G611 V-AOM-2P me G3427 P-1DS , and G2532 CONJ I will tell G2046 V-FAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP by G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF authority G1849 N-DSF I do G4160 V-PAI-1S these things G5023 D-APN .
30 The G3588 T-NSN baptism G908 N-NSN of John G2491 N-GSM , was G2258 V-IXI-3S it from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM , or G2228 PRT of G1537 PREP men G444 N-GPM ? answer G611 V-AOM-2P me G3427 P-1DS .
31 And G2532 CONJ they reasoned G3049 V-INI-3P with G4314 PREP themselves G1438 F-3APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , If G1437 COND we shall say G2036 V-2AAS-1P , From G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM ; he will say G2046 V-FAI-3S , Why G1302 then G3767 CONJ did ye not G3756 PRT-N believe G4100 V-AAI-2P him G846 P-DSM ?
32 But G235 CONJ if G1437 we shall say G2036 V-2AAS-1P , Of G1537 PREP men G444 N-GPM ; they feared G5399 V-INI-3P the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM : for G1063 CONJ all G537 A-NPM men counted G2192 V-IAI-3P John G2491 N-ASM , that G3754 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S a prophet G4396 N-NSM indeed G3689 ADV .
33 And G2532 CONJ they answered G611 V-AOP-NPM and said G3004 V-PAI-3P unto Jesus G2424 N-DSM . We cannot tell G1492 V-RAI-1P . And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answering G611 V-AOP-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Neither G3761 ADV do I G1473 P-1NS tell G3004 V-PAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP by G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF authority G1849 N-DSF I do G4160 V-PAI-1S these things G5023 D-APN .
