Isaiah 28:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Ah, the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim, and the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of those bloated with rich food, of those overcome with wine!
2 See, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong; like a storm of hail, a destroying tempest, like a storm of mighty, overflowing waters; with his hand he will hurl them down to the earth.
3 Trampled under foot will be the proud garland of the drunkards of Ephraim.
4 And the fading flower of its glorious beauty, which is on the head of those bloated with rich food, will be like a first-ripe fig before the summer; whoever sees it, eats it up as soon as it comes to hand.
5 In that day the LORD of hosts will be a garland of glory, and a diadem of beauty, to the remnant of his people;
6 and a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate.
7 These also reel with wine and stagger with strong drink; the priest and the prophet reel with strong drink, they are confused with wine, they stagger with strong drink; they err in vision, they stumble in giving judgment.
8 All tables are covered with filthy vomit; no place is clean.
9 "Whom will he teach knowledge, and to whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from milk, those taken from the breast?
10 For it is precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little."
11 Truly, with stammering lip and with alien tongue he will speak to this people,
12 to whom he has said, "This is rest; give rest to the weary; and this is repose"; yet they would not hear.
13 Therefore the word of the LORD will be to them, "Precept upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little;" in order that they may go, and fall backward, and be broken, and snared, and taken.
14 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, you scoffers who rule this people in Jerusalem.
15 Because you have said, "We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement; when the overwhelming scourge passes through it will not come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter";
16 therefore thus says the Lord GOD, See, I am laying in Zion a foundation stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation: "One who trusts will not panic."
17 And I will make justice the line, and righteousness the plummet; hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and waters will overwhelm the shelter.
18 Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through you will be beaten down by it.
19 As often as it passes through, it will take you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be sheer terror to understand the message.
20 For the bed is too short to stretch oneself on it, and the covering too narrow to wrap oneself in it.
21 For the LORD will rise up as on Mount Perazim, he will rage as in the valley of Gibeon; to do his deed-- strange is his deed! and to work his work-- alien is his work!
22 Now therefore do not scoff, or your bonds will be made stronger; for I have heard a decree of destruction from the Lord GOD of hosts upon the whole land.
23 Listen, and hear my voice; Pay attention, and hear my speech.
24 Do those who plow for sowing plow continually? Do they continually open and harrow their ground?
25 When they have leveled its surface, do they not scatter dill, sow cummin, and plant wheat in rows and barley in its proper place, and spelt as the border?
26 For they are well instructed; their God teaches them.
27 Dill is not threshed with a threshing sledge, nor is a cart wheel rolled over cummin; but dill is beaten out with a stick, and cummin with a rod.
28 Grain is crushed for bread, but one does not thresh it forever; one drives the cart wheel and horses over it, but does not pulverize it.
29 This also comes from the LORD of hosts; he is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.

3 The crown H5850 CFS of pride H1348 , the drunkards H7910 of Ephraim H669 , shall be trodden H7429 under feet H7272 :
4 And the glorious H6643 beauty H8597 , which H834 RPRO is on H5921 PREP the head H7218 NMS of the fat H8081 valley H1516 , shall be H1961 a fading H5034 flower H6733 , and as the hasty fruit H1061 before H2962 B-ADV the summer H7019 ; which H834 RPRO when he that looketh H7200 VQY3MS upon it seeth H7200 , while it is yet H5750 in his hand H3709 he eateth it up H1104 .
5 In that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS shall the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 be H1961 VQY3MS for a crown H5850 of glory H6643 , and for a diadem H6843 of beauty H8597 , unto the residue H7605 of his people H5971 ,
6 And for a spirit H7307 WL-NMS of judgment H4941 NMS to him that sitteth H3427 in H5921 PREP judgment H4941 , and for strength H1369 to them that turn H7725 the battle H4421 NFS to the gate H8179 .

14 Wherefore H3651 L-ADV hear H8085 VQI2MP the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , ye scornful H3944 NMS men H376 CMP , that rule H4910 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 which H834 RPRO is in Jerusalem H3389 .
15 Because H3588 CONJ ye have said H559 , We have made H3772 a covenant H1285 CFS with H854 PREP death H4194 NMS , and with H5973 hell H7585 NMS are we at H6213 agreement H2374 ; when H3588 CONJ the overflowing H7857 scourge H7752 shall pass through H5674 , it shall not H3808 NADV come H935 unto us : for H3588 CONJ we have made H7760 lies H3577 our refuge H4268 , and under falsehood H8267 have we hid ourselves H5641 :
16 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , Behold H2009 , I lay H3245 in Zion H6726 for a foundation H3245 a stone H68 GFS , a tried H976 stone H68 GFS , a precious H3368 corner H6438 stone , a sure H3245 foundation H4143 : he that believeth H539 shall not H3808 NADV make haste H2363 .
17 Judgment H4941 NMS also will I lay H7760 W-VQQ1MS to the line H6957 , and righteousness H6666 to the plummet H4949 : and the hail H1259 shall sweep away H3261 the refuge H4268 of lies H3577 , and the waters H4325 OMD shall overflow H7857 the hiding place H5643 W-CMS .
18 And your covenant H1285 with H854 PREP death H4194 NMS shall be disannulled H3722 , and your agreement H2380 with H854 PREP hell H7585 NMS shall not H3808 NADV stand H6965 VQY3FS ; when H3588 CONJ the overflowing H7857 scourge H7752 NMS shall pass through H5674 , then ye shall be H1961 W-VQQ2MP trodden down H4823 by it .
19 From the time H1767 that it goeth forth H5674 it shall take H3947 you : for H3588 CONJ morning H1242 B-NMS by morning H1242 B-NMS shall it pass over H5674 VQY3MS , by day H3117 B-AMS and by night H3915 : and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS a vexation H2113 only H7535 ADV to understand H995 the report H8052 .
20 For H3588 CONJ the bed H4702 is shorter H7114 than that a man can stretch himself H8311 on it : and the covering H4541 narrower H6887 than that he can wrap himself H3664 in it .
21 For H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS shall rise up H6965 VQY3MS as in mount H2022 Perazim H6556 , he shall be wroth H7264 as in the valley H6010 of Gibeon H1391 , that he may do H6213 L-VQFC his work H4639 , his strange H2114 VQPMS work H4639 ; and bring to pass H5647 his act H5656 , his strange H5237 AFS act H5656 .
22 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore be ye not mockers H3887 , lest H6435 your bands H4147 be made strong H2388 : for H3588 CONJ I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS from the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 of hosts H6635 a consumption H3617 , even determined H2782 upon H5921 PREP the whole H3605 NMS earth H776 D-GFS .
23 Give ye ear H238 VHI2MP , and hear H8085 my voice H6963 NMS-1MS ; hearken H7181 , and hear H8085 my speech H565 .
24 Doth the plowman H2790 plow H2790 all H3605 day H3117 D-AMS to sow H2232 ? doth he open H6605 and break the clods H7702 of his ground H127 ?
25 When H518 PART he hath made plain H7737 the face H6440 thereof , doth he not H3808 D-NPAR cast abroad H6327 the fitches H7100 , and scatter H2236 the cummin H3646 , and cast H7760 in the principal H7795 wheat H2406 NFS and the appointed H5567 barley H8184 and the rye H3698 in their place H1367 ?
26 For his God H430 CMP-3MS doth instruct H3256 him to discretion H4941 , and doth teach H3384 him .
27 For H3588 CONJ the fitches H7100 are not H3808 NADV threshed H1758 with a threshing instrument H2742 , neither is a cart H5699 wheel H212 turned H5437 about upon H5921 PREP the cummin H3646 ; but H3588 CONJ the fitches H7100 are beaten out H2251 with a staff H4294 , and the cummin H3646 with a rod H7626 .
28 Bread H3899 NMS corn is bruised H1854 ; because H3588 CONJ he will not H3808 NADV ever H5331 L-NMS be threshing H1758 it , nor break H2000 it with the wheel H1536 of his cart H5699 , nor H3808 ADV bruise H1854 it with his horsemen H6571 .
29 This H2063 DPRO also H1571 CONJ cometh forth H3318 from M-PREP the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , which is wonderful H6381 in counsel H6098 NFS , and excellent H1431 in working H8454 NFS .
