John 3:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews.
2 He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God."
3 Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above."
4 Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?"
5 Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit.
6 What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.
7 Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.'
8 The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
9 Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?"
10 Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?
11 "Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony.
12 If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?
13 No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.
14 And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up,
15 that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.
16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.
17 "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
18 Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
19 And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.
20 For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed.
21 But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."
22 After this Jesus and his disciples went into the Judean countryside, and he spent some time there with them and baptized.
23 John also was baptizing at Aenon near Salim because water was abundant there; and people kept coming and were being baptized
24 -- John, of course, had not yet been thrown into prison.
25 Now a discussion about purification arose between John's disciples and a Jew.
26 They came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, the one who was with you across the Jordan, to whom you testified, here he is baptizing, and all are going to him."
27 John answered, "No one can receive anything except what has been given from heaven.
28 You yourselves are my witnesses that I said, 'I am not the Messiah, but I have been sent ahead of him.'
29 He who has the bride is the bridegroom. The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. For this reason my joy has been fulfilled.
30 He must increase, but I must decrease."
31 The one who comes from above is above all; the one who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks about earthly things. The one who comes from heaven is above all.
32 He testifies to what he has seen and heard, yet no one accepts his testimony.
33 Whoever has accepted his testimony has certified this, that God is true.
34 He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.
35 The Father loves the Son and has placed all things in his hands.
36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever disobeys the Son will not see life, but must endure God's wrath.

10 Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS a master G1320 N-NSM of Israel G2474 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ knowest G1097 V-PAI-2S not G3756 PRT-N these things G5023 D-APN ?
11 Verily G281 HEB , verily G281 HEB , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , We G3754 CONJ speak G2980 V-PAI-1P that G3739 R-ASN we do know G1492 V-RAI-1P , and G2532 CONJ testify G3140 V-PAI-1P that G3739 R-ASN we have seen G3708 V-RAI-1P ; and G2532 CONJ ye receive G2983 V-PAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N our G3588 T-ASF witness G3141 N-ASF .
12 If G1487 COND I have told G2036 V-2AAI-1S you G3588 T-APN earthly things G1919 A-APN , and G2532 CONJ ye believe G4100 V-PAI-2P not G3756 PRT-N , how G4459 ADV-I shall ye believe G4100 V-FAI-2P , if G1437 COND I tell G2036 V-2AAS-1S you G5213 P-2DP of G3588 T-APN heavenly things G2032 A-APN ?
13 And G2532 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM hath ascended up G305 V-RAI-3S to G1519 PREP heaven G3772 N-ASM , but G1508 he G3588 T-NSM that G3588 T-NSM came down G2597 V-2AAP-NSM from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM , even the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of G3588 T-NSM man G444 N-GSM which is G5607 V-PXP-NSM in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM .
14 And G2532 CONJ as G2531 ADV Moses G3475 N-NSM lifted up G5312 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM serpent G3789 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF wilderness G2048 A-DSF , even so G3779 ADV must G1163 V-PQI-3S the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM be lifted up G5312 V-APN :
15 That G2443 CONJ whosoever G3588 T-NSM believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM in G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM should not G3361 PRT-N perish G622 V-2AMS-3S , but G235 CONJ have G2192 V-PAS-3S eternal G166 A-ASF life G2222 N-ASF .
16 For G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM so G3779 ADV loved G25 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM , that G5620 CONJ he gave G1325 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-ASM only begotten G3439 A-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM , that G2443 CONJ whosoever G3588 T-NSM believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM in G1519 PREP him G846 P-GSM should not G3361 PRT-N perish G622 V-2AMS-3S , but G235 CONJ have G2192 V-PAS-3S everlasting G166 A-ASF life G2222 N-ASF .
17 For G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM sent G649 V-AAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N his G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM to G2443 CONJ condemn G2919 V-PAS-3S the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM ; but G235 CONJ that G2443 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM world G2889 N-NSM through G1223 PREP him G846 P-GSM might be saved G4982 V-APS-3S .
18 He that believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM on G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM is not G3756 PRT-N condemned G2919 V-PPI-3S : but G1161 CONJ he that believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM not G3361 PRT-N is condemned G2919 V-RPI-3S already G2235 ADV , because G3754 CONJ he hath not G3361 PRT-N believed G4100 V-RAI-3S in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM only begotten G3439 A-GSM Son G5207 N-GSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
19 And G1161 CONJ this G3778 D-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSF condemnation G2920 N-NSF , that G3588 T-NSN light G5457 N-NSN is come G2064 V-2RAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ men G444 N-NPM loved G25 V-AAI-3P darkness G4655 N-ASN rather G3123 ADV than G2228 PRT light G5457 N-ASN , because G1063 CONJ their G3588 T-NPN deeds G2041 N-NPN were G2258 V-IXI-3S evil G4190 A-NPN .
20 For G1063 CONJ every one G3956 A-NSM that G3588 T-NSM doeth G4238 V-PAP-NSM evil G5337 A-APN hateth G3404 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN light G5457 N-ASN , neither G3756 PRT-N cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASN light G5457 N-ASN , lest G3363 his G3588 T-NPN deeds G2041 N-NPN should be reproved G1651 V-APS-3S .
21 But G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-ASF that G3588 T-ASF doeth G4160 V-PAP-NSM truth G225 N-ASF cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASN light G5457 N-ASN , that G2443 CONJ his G3588 T-NPN deeds G2041 N-NPN may be made manifest G5319 V-APS-3S , that G3754 CONJ they are G2076 V-PXI-3S wrought G2038 V-RPP-NPN in G1722 PREP God G2316 N-DSM .
22 After G3326 PREP these things G5023 D-APN came G2064 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-NSM land G1093 N-ASF of Judea G2449 ; and G2532 CONJ there G1563 ADV he tarried G1304 V-IAI-3S with G3326 PREP them G846 P-GPM , and G2532 CONJ baptized G907 V-IAI-3S .

28 Ye G5210 P-2NP yourselves G846 P-NPM bear me witness G3140 V-PAI-2P , that G3754 CONJ I said G2036 V-2AAI-1S , I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM , but G235 CONJ that G3754 CONJ I am G1510 V-PXI-1S sent G649 V-RPP-NSM before G1715 PREP him G1565 D-GSM .

30 He G1565 D-ASM must G1163 V-PQI-3S increase G837 V-PAN , but G1161 CONJ I G1691 P-1AS must decrease G1642 V-PPN .
31 He G3588 T-NSM that G3588 T-NSM cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM from above G509 ADV is G2076 V-PXI-3S above G1883 ADV all G3956 A-GPN : he that is G5607 V-PXP-NSM of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S earthly G1093 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ speaketh G2980 V-PAI-3S of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF : he that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S above G1883 ADV all G3956 A-GPN .
32 And G2532 CONJ what G3739 R-ASN he hath seen G3708 V-RAI-3S and G2532 CONJ heard G191 V-AAI-3S , that G5124 D-ASN he testifieth G3140 V-PAI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM receiveth G2983 V-PAI-3S his G3588 T-ASF testimony G3141 N-ASF .
33 He that hath received G2983 V-2AAP-NSM his G3588 T-ASF testimony G3141 N-ASF hath set to his seal G4972 V-AAI-3S that G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G227 A-NSM .
34 For G1063 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM whom G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM hath sent G649 V-AAI-3S speaketh G2980 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-APN words G3588 T-GSM of God G2316 N-GSM : for G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM giveth G1325 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-ASN Spirit G4151 N-ASN by G1537 PREP measure G3358 N-GSN unto him .
35 The G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM loveth G25 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ hath given G1325 V-RAI-3S all things G3956 A-APN into G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF hand G5495 N-DSF .
36 He that believeth G4100 V-PAP-NSM on G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM hath G2192 V-PAI-3S everlasting G166 A-ASF life G2222 N-ASF : and G1161 CONJ he that believeth G544 V-PAP-NSM not the G3588 T-DSM Son G5207 N-DSM shall not G3756 PRT-N see G3700 V-FDI-3S life G2222 N-ASF ; but G235 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF wrath G3709 N-NSF of God G2316 N-GSM abideth G3306 V-PAI-3S on G1909 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
