Job 14:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 "A mortal, born of woman, few of days and full of trouble,
2 comes up like a flower and withers, flees like a shadow and does not last.
3 Do you fix your eyes on such a one? Do you bring me into judgment with you?
4 Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean? No one can.
5 Since their days are determined, and the number of their months is known to you, and you have appointed the bounds that they cannot pass,
6 look away from them, and desist, that they may enjoy, like laborers, their days.
7 "For there is hope for a tree, if it is cut down, that it will sprout again, and that its shoots will not cease.
8 Though its root grows old in the earth, and its stump dies in the ground,
9 yet at the scent of water it will bud and put forth branches like a young plant.
10 But mortals die, and are laid low; humans expire, and where are they?
11 As waters fail from a lake, and a river wastes away and dries up,
12 so mortals lie down and do not rise again; until the heavens are no more, they will not awake or be roused out of their sleep.
13 Oh that you would hide me in Sheol, that you would conceal me until your wrath is past, that you would appoint me a set time, and remember me!
14 If mortals die, will they live again? All the days of my service I would wait until my release should come.
15 You would call, and I would answer you; you would long for the work of your hands.
16 For then you would not number my steps, you would not keep watch over my sin;
17 my transgression would be sealed up in a bag, and you would cover over my iniquity.
18 "But the mountain falls and crumbles away, and the rock is removed from its place;
19 the waters wear away the stones; the torrents wash away the soil of the earth; so you destroy the hope of mortals.
20 You prevail forever against them, and they pass away; you change their countenance, and send them away.
21 Their children come to honor, and they do not know it; they are brought low, and it goes unnoticed.
22 They feel only the pain of their own bodies, and mourn only for themselves."

8 Though H518 PART the root H8328 CMS-3MS thereof wax old H2204 VHY3MS in the earth H776 B-NFS , and the stock H1503 CMS-3MS thereof die H4191 VQY3MS in the ground H6083 WBD-NMS ;
9 Yet through the scent H7381 M-CMS of water H4325 OMD it will bud H6524 VHY3MS , and bring forth H6213 W-VQQ3MS boughs H7105 NMS like H3644 PREP a plant H5194 NMS .
10 But man H1397 W-NMS dieth H4191 VQY3MS , and wasteth away H2522 W-VQY3MS : yea , man H120 NMS giveth up the ghost H1478 W-VQY3MS , and where H346 W-IGAT-3MS is he ?
11 As the waters H4325 OMD fail H235 VQQ3MP from H4480 PREP-1MS the sea H3220 NMS , and the flood H5104 W-NMS decayeth H2717 VQY3MS and drieth up H3001 W-VQY3MS :

14 If H518 PART a man H1397 NMS die H4191 VQY3MS , shall he live H2421 VQY3MS again ? all H3605 NMS the days H3117 CMP of my appointed time H6635 CMS-1MS will I wait H3176 VPY1MS , till H5704 PREP my change H2487 CFS-1MS come H935 VQFC .
15 Thou shalt call H7121 VQI2MS , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS will answer H6030 VQI1MS-2MS thee : thou wilt have a desire H3700 VQI2MS to the work H4639 L-NMS of thine hands H3027 CFD-2MS .
16 For H3588 CONJ now H6258 ADV thou numberest H5608 VQI2MS my steps H6806 NMP-1MS : dost thou not H3808 ADV watch H8104 VQI2MS over H5921 PREP my sin H2403 CFS-1MS ?
17 My transgression H6588 CMS-1MS is sealed up H2856 VWPMP in a bag H6872 B-NMS , and thou sewest up H2950 W-VQY2MS mine iniquity H5771 CMS-1MS .
18 And surely H199 W-CONJ the mountain H2022 CMS falling H5307 VQPMS cometh to naught H5034 VQY3MS , and the rock H6697 W-NMS is removed H6275 VQY3MS out of his place H4725 M-CMS-3MS .
19 The waters H4325 OMD wear H7833 VQQ3MP the stones H68 NFP : thou washest away H7857 VQY2FS the things which grow H5599 CMP-3FS out of the dust H6083 CMS of the earth H776 NFS ; and thou destroyest H6 VHQ2MS the hope H8615 W-CFS of man H582 NMS .
20 Thou prevailest H8630 VQY2MS-3MS forever H5331 L-NMS against him , and he passeth H1980 W-VQY3MS : thou changest H8138 VPPMS his countenance H6440 CMS-3MS , and sendest him away H7971 W-VPY2MS .
21 His sons H1121 CMP-3MS come to honor H3513 VQY3MP , and he knoweth H3045 VQY3MS it not H3808 W-NPAR ; and they are brought low H6819 W-VQY3MP , but he perceiveth H995 VQY3MS it not H3808 W-NPAR of them H3926 .
22 But H389 ADV his flesh H1320 CMS-3MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS him shall have pain H3510 VQY3MS , and his soul H5315 W-CFS-3MS within H5921 PREP-3MS him shall mourn H56 VQY3FS .
