Ezekiel 14:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Certain elders of Israel came to me and sat down before me.
2 And the word of the LORD came to me:
3 Mortal, these men have taken their idols into their hearts, and placed their iniquity as a stumbling block before them; shall I let myself be consulted by them?
4 Therefore speak to them, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Any of those of the house of Israel who take their idols into their hearts and place their iniquity as a stumbling block before them, and yet come to the prophet-- I the LORD will answer those who come with the multitude of their idols,
5 in order that I may take hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, all of whom are estranged from me through their idols.
6 Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord GOD: Repent and turn away from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations.
7 For any of those of the house of Israel, or of the aliens who reside in Israel, who separate themselves from me, taking their idols into their hearts and placing their iniquity as a stumbling block before them, and yet come to a prophet to inquire of me by him, I the LORD will answer them myself.
8 I will set my face against them; I will make them a sign and a byword and cut them off from the midst of my people; and you shall know that I am the LORD.
9 If a prophet is deceived and speaks a word, I, the LORD, have deceived that prophet, and I will stretch out my hand against him, and will destroy him from the midst of my people Israel.
10 And they shall bear their punishment-- the punishment of the inquirer and the punishment of the prophet shall be the same--
11 so that the house of Israel may no longer go astray from me, nor defile themselves any more with all their transgressions. Then they shall be my people, and I will be their God, says the Lord GOD.
12 The word of the LORD came to me:
13 Mortal, when a land sins against me by acting faithlessly, and I stretch out my hand against it, and break its staff of bread and send famine upon it, and cut off from it human beings and animals,
14 even if Noah, Daniel, and Job, these three, were in it, they would save only their own lives by their righteousness, says the Lord GOD.
15 If I send wild animals through the land to ravage it, so that it is made desolate, and no one may pass through because of the animals;
16 even if these three men were in it, as I live, says the Lord GOD, they would save neither sons nor daughters; they alone would be saved, but the land would be desolate.
17 Or if I bring a sword upon that land and say, 'Let a sword pass through the land,' and I cut off human beings and animals from it;
18 though these three men were in it, as I live, says the Lord GOD, they would save neither sons nor daughters, but they alone would be saved.
19 Or if I send a pestilence into that land, and pour out my wrath upon it with blood, to cut off humans and animals from it;
20 even if Noah, Daniel, and Job were in it, as I live, says the Lord GOD, they would save neither son nor daughter; they would save only their own lives by their righteousness.
21 For thus says the Lord GOD: How much more when I send upon Jerusalem my four deadly acts of judgment, sword, famine, wild animals, and pestilence, to cut off humans and animals from it!
22 Yet, survivors shall be left in it, sons and daughters who will be brought out; they will come out to you. When you see their ways and their deeds, you will be consoled for the evil that I have brought upon Jerusalem, for all that I have brought upon it.
23 They shall console you, when you see their ways and their deeds; and you shall know that it was not without cause that I did all that I have done in it, says the Lord GOD.

2 And the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
3 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , these H428 D-DPRO-3MP men H376 D-NMP have set up H5927 their idols H1544 in H5921 PREP their heart H3820 CMS-3MP , and put H5414 the stumblingblock H4383 of their iniquity H5771 before H5227 their face H6440 CMP-3MP : should I be inquired of at all H1875 by them ?
4 Therefore H3651 L-ADV speak H1696 VPFC unto them , and say H559 unto H413 PREP them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Every man H376 NMS of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 that H834 RPRO setteth up H5927 VQY3MS his idols H1544 in H413 PREP his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , and putteth H7760 VQY3MS the stumblingblock H4383 of his iniquity H5771 CMS-3MS before H5227 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and cometh H935 to H413 PREP the prophet H5030 ; I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS will answer H6030 him that cometh H935 according to the multitude H7230 of his idols H1544 ;
5 That H4616 L-CONJ I may take H8610 the house H1004 of Israel H3478 in their own heart H3820 , because H834 RPRO they are all H3605 CMS-3MP estranged H2114 from me through their idols H1544 .
6 Therefore H3651 L-ADV say H559 unto H413 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; Repent H7725 , and turn H7725 yourselves from M-PREP your idols H1544 ; and turn away H7725 your faces H6440 from M-PREP all H3605 NMS your abominations H8441 .
7 For H3588 CONJ every one H376 NMS of the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , or of the stranger H1616 that H834 RPRO sojourneth H1481 in Israel H3478 , which separateth himself H5144 from me , and setteth up H5927 his idols H1544 in H413 PREP his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , and putteth H7760 VQY3MS the stumblingblock H4383 of his iniquity H5771 CMS-3MS before H5227 his face H6440 CMP-3MS , and cometh H935 to H413 PREP a prophet H5030 to inquire H1875 of him concerning me ; I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS will answer H6030 him by myself :
8 And I will set H5414 my face H6440 CMP-1MS against that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS man H376 , and will make H7760 him a sign H226 L-CMS and a proverb H4912 , and I will cut him off H3772 from the midst H8432 of my people H5971 ; and ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
9 And if H3588 the prophet H5030 be deceived H6601 when he hath spoken H1696 a thing H1697 VQPMS , I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS have deceived H6601 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS prophet H5030 , and I will stretch out H5186 my hand H3027 CFS-1MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and will destroy H8045 him from the midst H8432 of my people H5971 Israel H3478 LMS .
10 And they shall bear H5375 the punishment of their iniquity H5771 : the punishment H5771 of the prophet H5030 shall be H1961 even as the punishment H5771 of him that seeketh H1875 unto him ;
11 That H4616 L-CONJ the house H1004 of Israel H3478 may go no H3808 ADV more H5750 ADV astray H8582 VQY3MP from me , neither H3808 ADV be polluted H2930 any more H5750 ADV with all H3605 B-CMS their transgressions H6588 ; but that they may be H1961 W-VQQ3MS my people H5971 , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS may be H1961 VQY1MS their God H430 L-NMP , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
12 The word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS again to H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
13 Son H1121 of man H120 NMS , when H3588 CONJ the land H776 GFS sinneth H2398 against me by trespassing H4603 grievously H4604 , then will I stretch out H5186 mine hand H3027 CFS-1MS upon H5921 PREP-3FS it , and will break H7665 the staff H4294 of the bread H3899 NMS thereof , and will send H7971 famine H7458 NMS upon it , and will cut off H3772 man H120 NMS and beast H929 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS it :
14 Though these H428 D-DPRO-3MP three H7969 BMS men H376 , Noah H5146 EMS , Daniel H1840 , and Job H347 W-EMS , were H1961 W-VQQ3MS in H8432 it , they H1992 PPRO-3MP should deliver H5337 but their own souls H5315 CFS-3MP by their righteousness H6666 , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
15 If H3863 I cause noisome H7451 AFS beasts H2416 AFS to pass H5674 through the land H776 B-NFS , and they spoil H7921 it , so that it be H1961 W-VQQ3FS desolate H8077 , that no man H1097 M-NPAR may pass through H5674 because H6440 M-CMP of the beasts H2416 :
16 Though these H428 D-DPRO-3MP three H7969 BMS men H376 D-NMP were in H8432 it , as I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall deliver H5337 neither H518 PART sons H1121 NMP nor H518 PART daughters H1323 ; they only H905 L-CMS-3MP shall be delivered H5337 , but the land H776 WD-GFS shall be H1961 VQY3FS desolate H8077 .
17 Or H176 CONJ if I bring H935 a sword H2719 GFS upon H5921 PREP that H1931 land H776 D-GFS , and say H559 W-VQQ1MS , Sword H2719 GFS , go H5674 through the land H776 B-NFS ; so that I cut off H3772 man H120 NMS and beast H929 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS it :
18 Though these H428 D-DPRO-3MP three H7969 W-RMS men H376 D-NMP were in H8432 it , as I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , they shall deliver H5337 neither H3808 NADV sons H1121 NMP nor daughters H1323 W-CFP , but H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP only H905 L-CMS-3MP shall be delivered themselves H5337 .
19 Or H176 CONJ if I send H7971 a pestilence H1698 into H413 PREP that H1931 land H776 D-GFS , and pour out H8210 my fury H2534 upon H5921 PREP-3FS it in blood H1818 , to cut off H3772 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS it man H120 NMS and beast H929 :
20 Though Noah H5146 W-NAME-3MS , Daniel H1840 , and Job H347 W-EMS , were in H8432 it , as I H589 PPRO-1MS live H2416 AMS , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP shall deliver H5337 neither H518 PART son H1121 NMS nor H518 PART daughter H1323 CFS ; they shall but deliver H5337 their own souls H5315 by their righteousness H6666 .
21 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 ; How much more H637 CONJ when H3588 CONJ I send H7971 my four H702 sore H7451 AFS judgments H8201 upon H413 PREP Jerusalem H3389 , the sword H2719 GFS , and the famine H7458 , and the noisome H7451 AFS beast H2416 , and the pestilence H1698 , to cut off H3772 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS it man H120 NMS and beast H929 ?
22 Yet , behold H2009 IJEC , therein shall be left H3498 a remnant H6413 that shall be brought forth H3318 , both sons H1121 NMP and daughters H1323 W-CFP : behold H2009 IJEC , they shall come forth H3318 unto H413 you , and ye shall see H7200 their way H1870 CMS-3MP and their doings H5949 : and ye shall be comforted H5162 concerning H5921 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO I have brought H935 upon H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 , even concerning H854 all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO I have brought H935 upon H5921 PREP it .
23 And they shall comfort H5162 you , when H3588 CONJ ye see H7200 their ways H1870 CMS-3MP and their doings H5949 : and ye shall know H3045 that H3588 CONJ I have not H3808 NADV done H6213 VQQ1MS without cause H2600 ADV all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO I have done H6213 VQQ1MS in it , saith H5002 the Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 .
