Job 22:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Then Eliphaz the Temanite answered:
2 "Can a mortal be of use to God? Can even the wisest be of service to him?
3 Is it any pleasure to the Almighty if you are righteous, or is it gain to him if you make your ways blameless?
4 Is it for your piety that he reproves you, and enters into judgment with you?
5 Is not your wickedness great? There is no end to your iniquities.
6 For you have exacted pledges from your family for no reason, and stripped the naked of their clothing.
7 You have given no water to the weary to drink, and you have withheld bread from the hungry.
8 The powerful possess the land, and the favored live in it.
9 You have sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms of the orphans you have crushed.
10 Therefore snares are around you, and sudden terror overwhelms you,
11 or darkness so that you cannot see; a flood of water covers you.
12 "Is not God high in the heavens? See the highest stars, how lofty they are!
13 Therefore you say, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the deep darkness?
14 Thick clouds enwrap him, so that he does not see, and he walks on the dome of heaven.'
15 Will you keep to the old way that the wicked have trod?
16 They were snatched away before their time; their foundation was washed away by a flood.
17 They said to God, 'Leave us alone,' and 'What can the Almighty do to us?'
18 Yet he filled their houses with good things-- but the plans of the wicked are repugnant to me.
19 The righteous see it and are glad; the innocent laugh them to scorn,
20 saying, 'Surely our adversaries are cut off, and what they left, the fire has consumed.'
21 "Agree with God, and be at peace; in this way good will come to you.
22 Receive instruction from his mouth, and lay up his words in your heart.
23 If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored, if you remove unrighteousness from your tents,
24 if you treat gold like dust, and gold of Ophir like the stones of the torrent-bed,
25 and if the Almighty is your gold and your precious silver,
26 then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and lift up your face to God.
27 You will pray to him, and he will hear you, and you will pay your vows.
28 You will decide on a matter, and it will be established for you, and light will shine on your ways.
29 When others are humiliated, you say it is pride; for he saves the humble.
30 He will deliver even those who are guilty; they will escape because of the cleanness of your hands."

4 Will he reprove H3198 VHY3MS-2MS thee for fear H3374 DM-CFS-2MS of thee ? will he enter H935 VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-2MS thee into judgment H4941 BD-NMS ?
5 Is not H3808 I-NADV thy wickedness H7451 CFS-2MS great H7227 AFS ? and thine iniquities H5771 L-CMP-2MS infinite H369 W-ADV ?

12 Is not H3808 I-NADV God H433 NAME-4MS in the height H1363 CMS of heaven H8064 NMS ? and behold H7200 W-VQI2MS the height H7218 NMS of the stars H3556 NMP , how H3588 CONJ high they are H7311 VQQ3MP !
13 And thou sayest H559 W-VQQ2MS , How H4100 IPRO doth God H410 EDS know H3045 VQQ3MS ? can he judge H8199 VQY3MS through H1157 D-PREP the dark cloud H6205 NMS ?
14 Thick clouds H5645 NMP are a covering H5643 NMS to him , that he seeth H7200 VQY3MS not H3808 W-NPAR ; and he walketh H1980 VTY3MS in the circuit H2329 W-CMS of heaven H8064 NMP .
15 Hast thou marked H8104 VQY2MS the old H5769 NMS way H734 D-CMS which H834 RPRO wicked H205 NMS men H4962 CMP have trodden H1869 VQQ3MP ?
16 Which H834 RPRO were cut down H7059 VUQ3MP out of H3808 W-NPAR time H6256 NMS , whose foundation H3247 CMS-3MP was overflown H3332 VHY3MS with a flood H5104 NMS :
17 Which said H559 D-VQPMP unto God H410 L-NMS , Depart H5493 VQI2MS from H4480 M-PREP-3MS us : and what H4100 W-IPRO can the Almighty H7706 EDS do H6466 VQY3MS for them ?
18 Yet he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS filled H4390 VPQ3MS their houses H1004 CMP-3MP with good H2896 AMS things : but the counsel H6098 W-CFS of the wicked H7563 AMP is far H7368 AMP from H4480 PREP-1MS me .
19 The righteous H6662 AMP see H7200 VQY3MP it , and are glad H8055 W-VQY3MP : and the innocent H5355 W-AMS laugh them to scorn H3932 VQY3MS .
20 Whereas H518 PART our substance H7009 CMS-1MP is not H3808 NADV cut down H3582 VNQ3MS , but the remnant H3499 W-CMS-3MP of them the fire H784 NMS consumeth H398 VQQ3FS .
21 Acquaint H5532 VHI2MS now H4994 IJEC thyself with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and be at peace H7999 W-VQI2MS : thereby good H2896 NFS shall come H935 VQY3FS-2MS unto thee .
22 Receive H3947 VQI2MS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , the law H8451 NFS from his mouth H6310 M-CMS-3MS , and lay up H7760 W-VQI2MS his words H561 CMP-3MS in thine heart H3824 B-CMS-2MS .
23 If H518 PART thou return H7725 VQY2MS to H5704 PREP the Almighty H7706 EDS , thou shalt be built up H1129 VNY2MS , thou shalt put away iniquity H5766 NFS far H7368 VHY2MS from thy tabernacles H168 M-CMS-2MS .
24 Then shalt thou lay up H7896 W-VQI2MS gold H1220 NMS as H5921 PREP dust H6083 NMS , and the gold of Ophir H211 LFS as the stones H6697 WB-CMS of the brooks H5158 NMP .
25 Yea , the Almighty H7706 EDS shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS thy defense H1220 CMP-2MS , and thou shalt have plenty H8443 NFP of silver H3701 W-CMS .
26 For H3588 CONJ then H227 ADV shalt thou have thy delight H6026 VTY2MS in H5921 PREP the Almighty H7706 EDS , and shalt lift up H5375 W-VQY2MS thy face H6440 CMP-2MS unto H413 PREP God H433 NAME-4MS .
27 Thou shalt make thy prayer H6279 VHY2MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , and he shall hear H8085 W-VQY3MS-2MS thee , and thou shalt pay H7999 VPY2MS thy vows H5088 W-CMP-2MS .
28 Thou shalt also decree H1504 W-VQY2MS a thing H562 NMS , and it shall be established H6965 W-VQI3MS unto thee : and the light H216 NMS shall shine H5050 VQQ3MS upon H5921 W-PREP thy ways H1870 CMP-2MS .
29 When H3588 CONJ men are cast down H8213 VHQ3MP , then thou shalt say H559 W-VQY3FS , There is lifting up H1466 NFS ; and he shall save H3467 VHY3MS the humble person H5869 NMD .
30 He shall deliver H4422 VPY3MS the island H336 NADV of the innocent H5355 AMS : and it is delivered H4422 W-VNQ3MS by the pureness H1252 B-CMS of thine hands H3709 CFD-2MS .
