Joshua 10:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 When King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,
2 he became greatly frightened, because Gibeon was a large city, like one of the royal cities, and was larger than Ai, and all its men were warriors.
3 So King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent a message to King Hoham of Hebron, to King Piram of Jarmuth, to King Japhia of Lachish, and to King Debir of Eglon, saying,
4 "Come up and help me, and let us attack Gibeon; for it has made peace with Joshua and with the Israelites."
5 Then the five kings of the Amorites-- the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon-- gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and camped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
6 And the Gibeonites sent to Joshua at the camp in Gilgal, saying, "Do not abandon your servants; come up to us quickly, and save us, and help us; for all the kings of the Amorites who live in the hill country are gathered against us."
7 So Joshua went up from Gilgal, he and all the fighting force with him, all the mighty warriors.
8 The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear them, for I have handed them over to you; not one of them shall stand before you."
9 So Joshua came upon them suddenly, having marched up all night from Gilgal.
10 And the LORD threw them into a panic before Israel, who inflicted a great slaughter on them at Gibeon, chased them by the way of the ascent of Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 As they fled before Israel, while they were going down the slope of Beth-horon, the LORD threw down huge stones from heaven on them as far as Azekah, and they died; there were more who died because of the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword.
12 On the day when the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua spoke to the LORD; and he said in the sight of Israel, "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the valley of Aijalon."
13 And the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jashar? The sun stopped in midheaven, and did not hurry to set for about a whole day.
14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD heeded a human voice; for the LORD fought for Israel.
15 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.
16 Meanwhile, these five kings fled and hid themselves in the cave at Makkedah.
17 And it was told Joshua, "The five kings have been found, hidden in the cave at Makkedah."
18 Joshua said, "Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and set men by it to guard them;
19 but do not stay there yourselves; pursue your enemies, and attack them from the rear. Do not let them enter their towns, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand."
20 When Joshua and the Israelites had finished inflicting a very great slaughter on them, until they were wiped out, and when the survivors had entered into the fortified towns,
21 all the people returned safe to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah; no one dared to speak against any of the Israelites.
22 Then Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave, and bring those five kings out to me from the cave."
23 They did so, and brought the five kings out to him from the cave, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon.
24 When they brought the kings out to Joshua, Joshua summoned all the Israelites, and said to the chiefs of the warriors who had gone with him, "Come near, put your feet on the necks of these kings." Then they came near and put their feet on their necks.
25 And Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid or dismayed; be strong and courageous; for thus the LORD will do to all the enemies against whom you fight."
26 Afterward Joshua struck them down and put them to death, and he hung them on five trees. And they hung on the trees until evening.
27 At sunset Joshua commanded, and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had hidden themselves; they set large stones against the mouth of the cave, which remain to this very day.
28 Joshua took Makkedah on that day, and struck it and its king with the edge of the sword; he utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 Then Joshua passed on from Makkedah, and all Israel with him, to Libnah, and fought against Libnah.
30 The LORD gave it also and its king into the hand of Israel; and he struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it; he left no one remaining in it; and he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 Next Joshua passed on from Libnah, and all Israel with him, to Lachish, and laid siege to it, and assaulted it.
32 The LORD gave Lachish into the hand of Israel, and he took it on the second day, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and every person in it, as he had done to Libnah.
33 Then King Horam of Gezer came up to help Lachish; and Joshua struck him and his people, leaving him no survivors.
34 From Lachish Joshua passed on with all Israel to Eglon; and they laid siege to it, and assaulted it;
35 and they took it that day, and struck it with the edge of the sword; and every person in it he utterly destroyed that day, as he had done to Lachish.
36 Then Joshua went up with all Israel from Eglon to Hebron; they assaulted it,
37 and took it, and struck it with the edge of the sword, and its king and its towns, and every person in it; he left no one remaining, just as he had done to Eglon, and utterly destroyed it with every person in it.
38 Then Joshua, with all Israel, turned back to Debir and assaulted it,
39 and he took it with its king and all its towns; they struck them with the edge of the sword, and utterly destroyed every person in it; he left no one remaining; just as he had done to Hebron, and, as he had done to Libnah and its king, so he did to Debir and its king.
40 So Joshua defeated the whole land, the hill country and the Negeb and the lowland and the slopes, and all their kings; he left no one remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the LORD God of Israel commanded.
41 And Joshua defeated them from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, as far as Gibeon.
42 Joshua took all these kings and their land at one time, because the LORD God of Israel fought for Israel.
43 Then Joshua returned, and all Israel with him, to the camp at Gilgal.

2 That they feared H3372 W-VQY3MP greatly H3966 ADV , because H3588 CONJ Gibeon H1391 was a great H1419 AMS-3FS city H5892 GFS , as one H259 of the royal H4467 cities H5892 , and because H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3FS was greater H1419 AFS than H4480 PREP Ai H5857 , and all H3605 W-CMS the men H376 thereof were mighty H1368 .
3 Wherefore Adoni H139 - zedek king H4428 NMS of Jerusalem H3389 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Hoham H1944 king H4428 NMS of Hebron H2275 , and unto H413 PREP Piram H6502 king H4428 NMS of Jarmuth H3412 , and unto H413 PREP Japhia H3309 king H4428 NMS of Lachish H3923 , and unto H413 PREP Debir H1688 king H4428 NMS of Eglon H5700 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
4 Come up H5927 unto H413 PREP-1MS me , and help H5826 me , that we may smite H5221 Gibeon H1391 : for H3588 CONJ it hath made peace H7999 with H854 PREP Joshua H3091 and with H854 W-PART the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 Therefore the five H2568 kings H4428 NMS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , the king H4428 NMS of Jerusalem H3389 , the king H4428 NMS of Hebron H2275 , the king H4428 NMS of Jarmuth H3412 , the king H4428 NMS of Lachish H3923 , the king H4428 NMS of Eglon H5700 , gathered themselves together H622 , and went up H5927 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP and all H3605 W-CMS their hosts H4264 , and encamped H2583 before H5921 PREP Gibeon H1391 , and made war H3898 against H5921 PREP it .
6 And the men H376 CMP of Gibeon H1391 sent H7971 unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 to H413 PREP the camp H4264 to Gilgal H1537 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Slack H7503 not H408 NPAR thy hand H3027 CFD-2MS from thy servants H5650 ; come up H5927 to H413 PREP us quickly H4120 , and save H3467 us , and help H5826 us : for H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS the kings H4428 CMP of the Amorites H567 D-TMS that dwell H3427 in the mountains H2022 are gathered together H6908 against H413 PREP us .
7 So Joshua H3091 ascended H5927 W-VHY3MS from H4480 PREP Gilgal H1537 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 NMS of war H4421 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , and all H3605 W-CMS the mighty men H1368 of valor H2428 .
8 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , Fear H3372 them not H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ I have delivered H5414 them into thine hand H3027 ; there shall not H3808 ADV a man H376 NMS of H4480 them stand H5975 VQY3MS before H6440 thee .
9 Joshua H3091 therefore came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them suddenly H6597 ADV , and went up H5927 from H4480 PREP Gilgal H1537 all H3605 NMS night H3915 D-AMS .
10 And the LORD H3068 EDS discomfited H2000 them before H6440 L-CMP Israel H3478 , and slew H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them with a great H1419 AFS slaughter H4347 at Gibeon H1391 , and chased H7291 them along the way H1870 NMS that goeth up H4608 to Beth H1032 - horon , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them to H5704 PREP Azekah H5825 , and unto H5704 PREP Makkedah H4719 .
11 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as they fled H5127 from before H6440 M-CMP Israel H3478 , and were in the going down H4174 to Beth H1032 - horon , that the LORD H3068 W-EDS cast down H7993 great H1419 stones H68 NFP from H4480 PREP heaven H8064 D-NMD upon H5921 PREP-3MP them unto H5704 PREP Azekah H5825 , and they died H4191 : they were more H7227 AMP which H834 RPRO died H4191 with hailstones H1259 than they whom H834 RPRO the children H1121 of Israel H3478 slew H2026 with the sword H2719 .
12 Then H227 ADV spoke H1696 VPY3MS Joshua H3091 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS in the day H3117 B-NMS when the LORD H3068 EDS delivered up H5414 VQFC the Amorites H567 D-TMS before H6440 L-CMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and he said H559 W-VQY3MS in the sight H5869 of Israel H3478 , Sun H8121 , stand thou still H1826 upon Gibeon H1391 ; and thou , Moon H3394 W-NMS , in the valley H6010 B-CMS of Ajalon H357 .
13 And the sun H8121 D-NMS stood still H1826 , and the moon H3394 W-NMS stayed H5975 , until H5704 PREP the people H1471 NMS had avenged H5358 themselves upon their enemies H341 . Is not H3808 I-NPAR this H1931 PPRO-3FS written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of Jasher H3477 ? So the sun H8121 D-NMS stood H5975 W-VQY3MS still in the midst H2677 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and hasted H213 not H3808 W-NPAR to go down H935 L-VQFC about a whole H8549 AMS day H3117 .
14 And there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR day H3117 like that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS it or after H310 W-PREP-3MS it , that the LORD H3068 EDS hearkened H8085 unto the voice H6963 B-NMS of a man H376 NMS : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS fought H3898 for Israel H3478 .
15 And Joshua H3091 returned H7725 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 to Gilgal H1537 .
16 But these H428 D-DPRO-3MP five H2568 kings H4428 fled H5127 W-VQY3MP , and hid themselves H2244 in a cave H4631 at Makkedah H4719 .
17 And it was told H5046 Joshua H3091 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The five H2568 kings H4428 are found H4672 hid H2244 in a cave H4631 at Makkedah H4719 .
18 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Roll H1556 great H1419 stones H68 NFP upon H413 PREP the mouth H6310 of the cave H4631 , and set H6485 men H376 by H5921 PREP-3FS it for to keep H8104 them :
19 And stay H5975 ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP not H408 ADV , but pursue H7291 after H310 PREP your enemies H341 , and smite the hindmost H2179 of them ; suffer H5414 them not H408 ADV to enter H935 L-VQFC into H413 PREP their cities H5892 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS your God H430 hath delivered H5414 them into your hand H3027 .
20 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Joshua H3091 and the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 had made an end H3615 of slaying H5221 them with a very H3966 ADV great H1419 AFS slaughter H4347 , till H5704 PREP they were consumed H8552 , that the rest H8300 which remained H8277 of H4480 them entered H935 W-VQY3MP into H413 PREP fenced H4013 cities H5892 .
21 And all H3605 CMS the people H5971 returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to H413 PREP the camp H4264 to H413 PREP Joshua H3091 at Makkedah H4719 in peace H7965 : none H3808 ADV moved H2782 his tongue H3956 CMS-3MS against any H376 L-NMS of the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 .
22 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Joshua H3091 , Open H6605 the mouth H6310 of the cave H4631 , and bring out H3318 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP five H2568 kings H4428 unto H413 PREP-1MS me out of H4480 PREP the cave H4631 .
23 And they did H6213 W-VQY3MP so H3651 ADV , and brought forth those H428 D-DPRO-3MP five H2568 kings H4428 NMS unto H413 PREP-3MS him out of H4480 PREP the cave H4631 , the king H4428 NMS of Jerusalem H3389 , the king H4428 NMS of Hebron H2275 , the king H4428 NMS of Jarmuth H3412 , the king H4428 NMS of Lachish H3923 , and the king H4428 NMS of Eglon H5700 .
24 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when they brought out H3318 those H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 unto H413 PREP Joshua H3091 , that Joshua H3091 called H7121 W-VQY3MS for H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the captains H7101 of the men H376 NMS of war H4421 which went H1980 with H854 PREP-3MS him , Come near H7126 , put H7760 your feet H7272 upon H5921 PREP the necks H6677 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 . And they came near H7126 , and put H7760 W-VQY3MP their feet H7272 CFD-3MP upon H5921 PREP the necks H6677 of them .
25 And Joshua H3091 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR , nor H408 ADV be dismayed H2865 , be strong H2388 and of good courage H553 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3602 shall the LORD H3068 EDS do H6213 VQY3MS to all H3605 L-CMS your enemies H341 against whom H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS fight H3898 .
26 And afterward H310 PREP Joshua H3091 smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them , and slew H4191 them , and hanged H8518 them on H5921 PREP five H2568 trees H6086 : and they were H1961 W-VQY3MP hanging H8518 upon H5921 PREP the trees H6086 until H5704 PREP the evening H6153 .
27 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the time H6256 L-CMS of the going down H935 VQFC of the sun H8121 D-NMS , that Joshua H3091 commanded H6680 VPQ3MS , and they took them down H3381 off the trees H5921 M-PREP , and cast H7993 them into H413 PREP the cave H4631 wherein H834 RPRO they had been hid H2244 , and laid H7760 great H1419 stones H68 NFP in H5921 M-PREP the cave H4631 \'s mouth H6310 , which remain until H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS very H6106 GFS day H3117 D-AMS .
28 And that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS Joshua H3091 took H3920 Makkedah H4719 , and smote H5221 it with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and the king H4428 thereof he utterly destroyed H2763 them , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein ; he let H7604 none H3808 NADV remain H8300 NMS : and he did H6213 W-VQY3MS to the king H4428 L-CMS of Makkedah H4719 as H834 RPRO he did H6213 W-VQY3MS unto the king H4428 L-CMS of Jericho H3405 .
29 Then Joshua H3091 passed H5674 W-VQY3MS from Makkedah H4719 , and all H3605 Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , unto Libnah H3841 , and fought H3898 against H5973 PREP Libnah H3841 :
30 And the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS it also H1571 CONJ , and the king H4428 thereof , into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Israel H3478 ; and he smote H5221 it with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein ; he let H7604 none H3808 ADV remain H8300 NMS in it ; but did H6213 W-VQY3MS unto the king H4428 thereof as H834 RPRO he did H6213 W-VQY3MS unto the king H4428 L-CMS of Jericho H3405 .
31 And Joshua H3091 passed H5674 W-VQY3MS from Libnah H3841 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , unto Lachish H3923 , and encamped H2583 against H5921 PREP-3FS it , and fought H3898 against it :
32 And the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS Lachish H3923 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Israel H3478 , which took H3920 it on the second H8145 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , and smote H5221 it with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein , according to all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS to Libnah H3841 .
33 Then H227 ADV Horam H2036 king H4428 NMS of Gezer H1507 came up H5927 to help H5826 Lachish H3923 ; and Joshua H3091 smote H5221 him and his people H5971 , until H5704 PREP he had left H7604 him none H1115 PREP remaining H8300 .
34 And from Lachish H3923 Joshua H3091 passed H5674 W-VQY3MS unto Eglon H5700 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him ; and they encamped H2583 W-VQY3MP against H5921 PREP-3FS it , and fought H3898 against H5921 it :
35 And they took H3920 it on that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , and smote H5221 it with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein he utterly destroyed H2763 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS , according to all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS to Lachish H3923 .
36 And Joshua H3091 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS from Eglon H5700 , and all H3605 Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , unto Hebron H2275 ; and they fought H3898 against H5921 it :
37 And they took H3920 it , and smote H5221 it with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and the king H4428 thereof , and all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 thereof , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein ; he left H7604 none H3808 ADV remaining H8300 NMS , according to all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS to Eglon H5700 ; but destroyed H2763 it utterly , and all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 D-NFS that H834 RPRO were therein .
38 And Joshua H3091 returned H7725 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , to Debir H1688 ; and fought H3898 against H5921 it :
39 And he took H3920 it , and the king H4428 thereof , and all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 thereof ; and they smote H5221 them with the edge H6310 L-CMS of the sword H2719 GFS , and utterly destroyed H2763 all H3605 NMS the souls H5315 GFS that H834 RPRO were therein ; he left H7604 none H3808 NADV remaining H8300 NMS : as H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS to Hebron H2275 , so H3651 ADV he did H6213 VQQ3MS to Debir H1688 , and to the king H4428 thereof ; as H834 RPRO he had done H6213 VQQ3MS also to Libnah H3841 , and to her king H4428 .
40 So Joshua H3091 smote H5221 all H3605 NMS the country H776 D-GFS of the hills H2022 , and of the south H5045 , and of the vale H8219 , and of the springs H794 , and all H3605 NMS their kings H4428 : he left H7604 none H3808 NADV remaining H8300 NMS , but utterly destroyed H2763 all H3605 NMS that breathed H5397 , as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 LMS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS .
41 And Joshua H3091 smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them from Kadesh H6947 - barnea even unto H5704 W-PREP Gaza H5804 LFS , and all H3605 NMS the country H776 GFS of Goshen H1657 , even unto H5704 W-PREP Gibeon H1391 .
42 And all H3605 NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP kings H4428 and their land H776 did Joshua H3091 take H3920 at one H259 MFS time H6471 , because H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 fought H3898 for Israel H3478 .
43 And Joshua H3091 returned H7725 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him , unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 to Gilgal H1537 .
