Luke 23:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Then the assembly rose as a body and brought Jesus before Pilate.
2 They began to accuse him, saying, "We found this man perverting our nation, forbidding us to pay taxes to the emperor, and saying that he himself is the Messiah, a king."
3 Then Pilate asked him, "Are you the king of the Jews?" He answered, "You say so."
4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no basis for an accusation against this man."
5 But they were insistent and said, "He stirs up the people by teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee where he began even to this place."
6 When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean.
7 And when he learned that he was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him off to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time.
8 When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, for he had been wanting to see him for a long time, because he had heard about him and was hoping to see him perform some sign.
9 He questioned him at some length, but Jesus gave him no answer.
10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him.
11 Even Herod with his soldiers treated him with contempt and mocked him; then he put an elegant robe on him, and sent him back to Pilate.
12 That same day Herod and Pilate became friends with each other; before this they had been enemies.
13 Pilate then called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,
14 and said to them, "You brought me this man as one who was perverting the people; and here I have examined him in your presence and have not found this man guilty of any of your charges against him.
15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us. Indeed, he has done nothing to deserve death.
16 I will therefore have him flogged and release him."

18 Then they all shouted out together, "Away with this fellow! Release Barabbas for us!"
19 (This was a man who had been put in prison for an insurrection that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)
20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus, addressed them again;
21 but they kept shouting, "Crucify, crucify him!"
22 A third time he said to them, "Why, what evil has he done? I have found in him no ground for the sentence of death; I will therefore have him flogged and then release him."
23 But they kept urgently demanding with loud shouts that he should be crucified; and their voices prevailed.
24 So Pilate gave his verdict that their demand should be granted.
25 He released the man they asked for, the one who had been put in prison for insurrection and murder, and he handed Jesus over as they wished.
26 As they led him away, they seized a man, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming from the country, and they laid the cross on him, and made him carry it behind Jesus.
27 A great number of the people followed him, and among them were women who were beating their breasts and wailing for him.
28 But Jesus turned to them and said, "Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves and for your children.
29 For the days are surely coming when they will say, 'Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.'
30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, 'Fall on us'; and to the hills, 'Cover us.'
31 For if they do this when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?"
32 Two others also, who were criminals, were led away to be put to death with him.
33 When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left.
34 Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing.
35 And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!"
36 The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine,
37 and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"
38 There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews."
39 One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!"
40 But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
41 And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong."
42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."
43 He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise."
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,
45 while the sun's light failed; and the curtain of the temple was torn in two.
46 Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." Having said this, he breathed his last.
47 When the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God and said, "Certainly this man was innocent."
48 And when all the crowds who had gathered there for this spectacle saw what had taken place, they returned home, beating their breasts.
49 But all his acquaintances, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.
50 Now there was a good and righteous man named Joseph, who, though a member of the council,
51 had not agreed to their plan and action. He came from the Jewish town of Arimathea, and he was waiting expectantly for the kingdom of God.
52 This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.
53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in a linen cloth, and laid it in a rock-hewn tomb where no one had ever been laid.
54 It was the day of Preparation, and the sabbath was beginning.
55 The women who had come with him from Galilee followed, and they saw the tomb and how his body was laid.
56 Then they returned, and prepared spices and ointments. On the sabbath they rested according to the commandment.

2 And G1161 CONJ they began G756 V-ADI-3P to accuse G2723 V-PAN him G846 P-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , We found G2147 V-2AAI-1P this G5126 D-ASM fellow perverting G1294 V-PAP-ASM the G3588 T-ASN nation G1484 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ forbidding G2967 V-PAP-ASM to give G1325 V-PAN tribute G5411 N-APM to Caesar G2541 N-DSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-ASM that he himself G1438 F-3ASM is G1511 V-PXN Christ G5547 N-ASM a King G935 N-ASM .
3 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM asked G1905 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS the G3588 T-NSM King G935 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM ? And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-GPM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM him G846 P-DSM and said G5346 V-IXI-3S , Thou G4771 P-2NS sayest G3004 V-PAI-2S it .
4 Then G1161 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Pilate G4091 N-NSM to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM chief priests G749 N-APM and G2532 CONJ to the G3588 T-APM people G3793 N-APM , I find G2147 V-PAI-1S no G3762 A-ASN fault G158 A-ASN in G1722 PREP this G3588 T-DSM man G444 N-DSM .
5 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM were the more fierce G2001 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , He stirreth up G383 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM , teaching G1321 V-PAP-NSM throughout G2596 PREP all G3650 A-GSF Jewry G2449 N-GSF , beginning G756 V-AMP-NSM from G575 PREP Galilee G1056 N-GSF to G2193 CONJ this place G5602 ADV .
6 When G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM heard G191 V-AAP-NSM of Galilee G1056 N-ASF , he asked G1905 V-AAI-3S whether G1487 COND the G3588 T-NSM man G444 N-NSM were G2076 V-PXI-3S a Galilaean G1057 N-NSM .
7 And G2532 CONJ as soon as he knew G1921 V-2AAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ he belonged unto G2076 V-PXI-3S Herod G2264 N-GSM \'s jurisdiction G1849 N-GSF , he sent G375 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM to G4314 PREP Herod G2264 N-ASM , who himself G846 P-ASM also G2532 CONJ was G5607 V-PXP-ASM at G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-DPN at G1722 PREP that G3588 T-DPF time G2250 N-DPF .
8 And G1161 CONJ when Herod G2264 N-NSM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM Jesus G2424 N-ASM , he was exceeding glad G5463 V-2AOI-3S : for G1063 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S desirous G2309 V-PAP-NSM to see G1492 V-2AAN him G846 P-ASM of G1537 PREP a long G2425 A-GSM season , because he had heard G191 V-PAN many things G4183 A-APN of G4012 PREP him G846 P-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ he hoped G1679 V-IAI-3S to have seen G1492 V-2AAN some G5100 X-ASN miracle G4592 N-ASN done G1096 V-PNP-ASN by G5259 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
9 Then G1161 CONJ he questioned G1905 V-IAI-3S with him G846 P-ASM in G1722 PREP many G2425 A-DPM words G3056 N-DPM ; but G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S him G846 P-DSM nothing G3762 A-ASN .
10 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ scribes G1122 N-NPM stood G2476 V-LAI-3P and vehemently G2159 ADV accused G2723 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-GSM .
11 And G1161 CONJ Herod G2264 N-NSM with G4862 PREP his G3588 T-DPN men of war G4753 N-DPN set him at naught G1848 V-AAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ mocked G1702 V-AAP-NSM him , and arrayed G4016 V-2AAP-NSM him G846 P-ASM in a gorgeous G2986 A-ASF robe G2066 N-ASF , and sent him G3588 T-DSM again G375 V-AAI-3S to Pilate G4091 N-DSM .
12 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-DSF same G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF Pilate G4091 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ Herod G2264 N-NSM were made G1096 V-2ADI-3P friends G5384 A-NPM together G3326 PREP : for G1063 CONJ before G4391 V-IAI-3P they were G5607 V-PXP-NPM at G1722 PREP enmity G2189 N-DSF between G4314 PREP themselves G1438 F-3APM .
13 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM , when he had called together G4779 V-AMP-NSM the G3588 T-APM chief priests G749 N-APM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM rulers G758 N-APM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM ,
14 Said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Ye have brought G4374 V-AAI-2P this G3588 T-ASM man G444 N-ASM unto me G3427 P-1DS , as G5613 ADV one that perverteth G654 V-PAP-APM the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM : and G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I G1473 P-1NS , having examined G350 V-AAP-NSM him before G1799 ADV you G5216 P-2GP , have found G2147 V-2AAI-1S no G3762 A-ASN fault G158 A-ASN in G1722 PREP this G3588 T-DSM man G444 N-DSM touching those things whereof G3739 R-GPN ye accuse G2723 V-PAI-2P him G846 P-GSM :
15 No G235 CONJ , nor yet G3761 ADV Herod G2264 N-NSM : for G1063 CONJ I sent G375 V-AAI-1S you G5209 P-2AP to G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ , lo G2400 V-2AAM-2S , nothing G3762 A-NSN worthy G514 A-NSN of death G2288 N-GSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S done G4238 V-RPP-NSN unto him G846 P-DSM .
16 I will therefore G3767 CONJ chastise G3811 V-AAP-NSM him G846 P-ASM , and release G630 V-FAI-1S him .
17 ( CONJ For CONJ of necessity G318 N-ASF he must G2192 V-IAI-3S release G630 V-PAN one G1520 A-ASM unto them G846 P-DPM at G2596 PREP the feast G1859 N-ASF . )
18 And G1161 CONJ they cried out G349 V-AAI-3P all at once G3826 ADV , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Away G142 V-PAM-2S with this G5126 D-ASM man , and G1161 CONJ release G630 V-AAM-2S unto us G2254 P-1DP Barabbas G912 N-ASM :
19 ( R-NSM Who G3748 R-NSM for G1223 PREP a certain G5100 X-ASF sedition G4714 N-ASF made G1096 V-2ADP-ASF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF city G4172 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ for murder G5408 N-ASM , was G2258 V-IXI-3S cast G906 V-RPP-NSM into G1519 PREP prison G5438 N-ASF . )
20 Pilate G4091 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ , willing G2309 V-PAP-NSM to release G630 V-AAN Jesus G2424 N-ASM , spake again to them G4377 V-AAI-3S .
21 But G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM cried G2019 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Crucify G4717 V-AAM-2S him , crucify G4717 V-AAM-2S him G846 P-ASM .
22 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM the third time G5154 A-ASN , Why G1063 CONJ , what G5101 I-ASN evil G2556 A-ASN hath he G3778 D-NSM done G4160 V-AAI-3S ? 23 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM were instant G1945 V-INI-3P with loud G3173 A-DPF voices G5456 N-DPF , requiring G154 V-PMP-NPM that he G846 P-ASM might be crucified G4717 V-APN . And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF voices G5456 N-NPF of them G846 P-GPM and G2532 CONJ of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM chief priests G749 N-GPM prevailed G2729 V-IAI-3P .
24 And G1161 CONJ Pilate G4091 N-NSM gave sentence G1948 V-AAI-3S that G3588 T-NSN it G3588 T-NSN should be G1096 V-2ADN as they required G155 N-NSN .
25 And G1161 CONJ he released G630 V-AAI-3S unto them G3588 T-ASM him that for G1223 PREP sedition G4714 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ murder G5408 N-ASM was cast G906 V-RPP-ASM into G1519 PREP prison G5438 N-ASF , whom G3739 R-ASM they G3588 T-ASM had desired G154 V-IMI-3P ; but G1161 CONJ he delivered G3860 V-AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-ASM to their G3588 T-DSN will G2307 N-DSN .
26 And G2532 CONJ as G5613 ADV they led him away G520 V-2AAI-3P , they laid hold upon G1949 V-2ADP-NPM one G5100 X-GSM Simon G4613 N-GSM , a Cyrenian G2956 N-GSM , coming G2064 V-PNP-GSM out of G575 PREP the country G68 N-GSM , and on him G846 P-ASM they laid G2007 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM cross G4716 N-ASM , that he might bear G5342 V-PAN it G3588 T-GSM after G3693 ADV Jesus G2424 N-GSM .
27 And G1161 CONJ there followed G190 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-DSM a great G4183 A-NSN company G4128 N-NSN of people G2992 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ of women G1135 N-GPF , which G3739 R-NPF also G2532 CONJ bewailed G2875 V-IMI-3P and G2532 CONJ lamented G2354 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM .
28 But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM turning G4762 V-2APP-NSM unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APF said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Daughters G2364 N-VPF of Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , weep G2799 V-PAM-2P not G3361 PRT-N for G1909 PREP me G1691 P-1AS , but G4133 ADV weep G2799 V-PAM-2P for G1909 PREP yourselves G1438 F-3APF , and G2532 CONJ for G1909 PREP your G3588 T-APN children G5043 N-APN .
29 For G3754 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , the days G2250 N-NPF are coming G2064 V-PNI-3P , in G1722 PREP the which G3739 R-DPF they shall say G2046 V-FAI-3P , Blessed G3107 A-NPF are the G3588 T-NPF barren G4723 N-NPF , and G2532 CONJ the wombs G2836 N-NPF that G3739 R-NPF never G3756 PRT-N bare G1080 V-AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ the paps G3149 N-NPM which G3739 R-NPM never G3756 PRT-N gave suck G2337 V-AAI-3P .
30 Then G5119 ADV shall they begin G756 V-FMI-3P to say G3004 V-PAN to the G3588 T-DPN mountains G3735 N-DPN , Fall G4098 V-2AAM-2P on G1909 PREP us G2248 P-1AP ; and G2532 CONJ to the G3588 T-DPM hills G1015 N-DPM , Cover G2572 V-AAM-2P us G2248 P-1AP .
31 For G3754 CONJ if G1487 COND they do G4160 V-PAI-3P these things G5023 D-APN in G1722 PREP a green G5200 A-DSN tree G3586 N-DSN , what G5101 I-NSN shall be done G1096 V-2ADS-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN dry G3584 A-DSN ?
32 And G1161 CONJ there were also G2532 CONJ two G1417 A-NUI other G2087 A-NPM , malefactors G2557 A-NPM , led G71 V-IPI-3P with G4862 PREP him G846 P-DSM to be put to death G337 V-APN .
33 And G2532 CONJ when G3753 ADV they were come G565 V-2AAI-3P to G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASM place G5117 N-ASM , which is called G2564 V-PPP-ASM Calvary G2898 N-ASN , there G1563 ADV they crucified G4717 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM malefactors G2557 A-APM , one G3739 R-ASM on G1537 PREP the right hand G1188 A-GPM , and G1161 CONJ the other G3739 R-ASM on G1537 PREP the left G710 A-GPM .
34 Then G1161 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM , Father G3962 N-VSM , forgive G863 V-2AAM-2S them G846 P-DPM ; for G1063 CONJ they know G1492 V-RAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N what G5101 I-ASN they do G4160 V-PAI-3P . And G1161 CONJ they parted G1266 V-PMP-NPM his G3588 T-APN raiment G2440 N-APN , and cast G906 V-2AAI-3P lots G2819 N-ASM .
35 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM people G2992 N-NSM stood G2476 V-LAI-3S beholding G2334 V-PAP-NSM . And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM rulers G758 N-NPM also G2532 CONJ with G4862 PREP them G846 P-DPM derided G1592 V-IAI-3P him , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , He saved G4982 V-AAI-3S others G243 A-APM ; let him save G4982 V-AAM-3S himself G1438 F-3ASM , if G1487 COND he G3778 D-NSM be G2076 V-PXI-3S Christ G5547 N-NSM , the G3588 T-NSM chosen G1588 A-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
36 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM soldiers G4757 N-NPM also G2532 CONJ mocked G1702 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-DSM , coming to G4334 V-PNP-NPM him , and G2532 CONJ offering G4374 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-DSM vinegar G3690 N-ASN ,
37 And G2532 CONJ saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , If G1487 COND thou G4771 P-2NS be G1488 V-PXI-2S the G3588 T-NSM king G935 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM , save G4982 V-AAM-2S thyself G4572 F-2ASM .
38 And G1161 CONJ a superscription G1923 N-NSF also G2532 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S written G1125 V-RPP-NSF over G1909 PREP him G846 P-DSM in letters G1121 N-DPN of Greek G1673 A-DPN , and G2532 CONJ Latin G4513 A-DPN , and G2532 CONJ Hebrew G1444 A-DPN , THIS G3778 D-NSM IS G2076 V-PXI-3S THE G3588 T-NSM KING G935 N-NSM OF G3588 T-GPM THE G3588 T-GPM JEWS G2453 A-GPM .
39 And G1161 CONJ one G1520 A-NSM of the G3588 T-GPM malefactors G2557 A-GPM which were hanged G2910 V-APP-GPM railed on G987 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , If G1487 COND thou G4771 P-2NS be G1488 V-PXI-2S Christ G5547 N-NSM , save G4982 V-AAM-2S thyself G4572 F-2ASM and G2532 CONJ us G2248 P-1AP .
40 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM other G2087 A-NSM answering G611 V-AOP-NSM rebuked G2008 V-IAI-3S him G846 P-DSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Dost not G3761 ADV thou G4771 P-2NS fear G5399 V-PNI-2S God G2316 N-ASM , seeing G3754 CONJ thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN same G846 P-DSN condemnation G2917 N-DSN ?
41 And G2532 CONJ we G2249 P-1NP indeed G3303 PRT justly G1346 ADV ; for G1063 CONJ we receive G618 V-PAI-1P the due reward G514 A-APN of our deeds G4238 V-AAI-1P : but G1161 CONJ this man G3778 D-NSM hath done G4238 V-AAI-3S nothing G3762 A-ASN amiss G824 A-ASN .
42 And G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-DSM said G3004 V-IAI-3S unto Jesus G2424 N-DSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , remember G3415 V-APM-2S me G3450 P-1GS when G3752 CONJ thou comest G2064 V-2AAS-2S into G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSF kingdom G932 N-DSF .
43 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , Today G4594 ADV shalt thou be G2071 V-FXI-2S with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS in G1722 PREP paradise G3857 N-DSM .
44 And G1161 CONJ it was G2258 V-IXI-3S about G5616 ADV the sixth G1623 A-NSF hour G5610 N-NSF , and G2532 CONJ there was G1096 V-2ADI-3S a darkness G4655 N-NSN over G1909 PREP all G3650 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF earth G1093 N-ASF until G2193 CONJ the ninth G1766 A-GSF hour G5610 N-GSF .
45 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM sun G2246 N-NSM was darkened G4654 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN veil G2665 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM temple G3485 N-GSM was rent G4977 V-API-3S in the midst G3319 A-ASN .
46 And G2532 CONJ when Jesus G2424 N-NSM had cried G5455 V-AAP-NSM with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Father G3962 N-VSM , into G1519 PREP thy G4675 P-2GS hands G5495 N-APF I commend G3908 V-FDI-1S my G3588 T-ASN spirit G4151 N-ASN : and G2532 CONJ having said G2036 V-2AAP-NSM thus G5023 D-APN , he gave up the ghost G1606 V-AAI-3S .
