Jeremiah 44:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 The word that came to Jeremiah for all the Judeans living in the land of Egypt, at Migdol, at Tahpanhes, at Memphis, and in the land of Pathros,
2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: You yourselves have seen all the disaster that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the towns of Judah. Look at them; today they are a desolation, without an inhabitant in them,
3 because of the wickedness that they committed, provoking me to anger, in that they went to make offerings and serve other gods that they had not known, neither they, nor you, nor your ancestors.
4 Yet I persistently sent to you all my servants the prophets, saying, "I beg you not to do this abominable thing that I hate!"
5 But they did not listen or incline their ear, to turn from their wickedness and make no offerings to other gods.
6 So my wrath and my anger were poured out and kindled in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem; and they became a waste and a desolation, as they still are today.
7 And now thus says the LORD God of hosts, the God of Israel: Why are you doing such great harm to yourselves, to cut off man and woman, child and infant, from the midst of Judah, leaving yourselves without a remnant?
8 Why do you provoke me to anger with the works of your hands, making offerings to other gods in the land of Egypt where you have come to settle? Will you be cut off and become an object of cursing and ridicule among all the nations of the earth?
9 Have you forgotten the crimes of your ancestors, of the kings of Judah, of their wives, your own crimes and those of your wives, which they committed in the land of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem?
10 They have shown no contrition or fear to this day, nor have they walked in my law and my statutes that I set before you and before your ancestors.
11 Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: I am determined to bring disaster on you, to bring all Judah to an end.
12 I will take the remnant of Judah who are determined to come to the land of Egypt to settle, and they shall perish, everyone; in the land of Egypt they shall fall; by the sword and by famine they shall perish; from the least to the greatest, they shall die by the sword and by famine; and they shall become an object of execration and horror, of cursing and ridicule.
13 I will punish those who live in the land of Egypt, as I have punished Jerusalem, with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence,
14 so that none of the remnant of Judah who have come to settle in the land of Egypt shall escape or survive or return to the land of Judah. Although they long to go back to live there, they shall not go back, except some fugitives.
15 Then all the men who were aware that their wives had been making offerings to other gods, and all the women who stood by, a great assembly, all the people who lived in Pathros in the land of Egypt, answered Jeremiah:
16 "As for the word that you have spoken to us in the name of the LORD, we are not going to listen to you.
17 Instead, we will do everything that we have vowed, make offerings to the queen of heaven and pour out libations to her, just as we and our ancestors, our kings and our officials, used to do in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem. We used to have plenty of food, and prospered, and saw no misfortune.
18 But from the time we stopped making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her, we have lacked everything and have perished by the sword and by famine."
19 And the women said, "Indeed we will go on making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out libations to her; do you think that we made cakes for her, marked with her image, and poured out libations to her without our husbands' being involved?"
20 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, men and women, all the people who were giving him this answer:
21 "As for the offerings that you made in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem, you and your ancestors, your kings and your officials, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them? Did it not come into his mind?
22 The LORD could no longer bear the sight of your evil doings, the abominations that you committed; therefore your land became a desolation and a waste and a curse, without inhabitant, as it is to this day.
23 It is because you burned offerings, and because you sinned against the LORD and did not obey the voice of the LORD or walk in his law and in his statutes and in his decrees, that this disaster has befallen you, as is still evident today."
24 Jeremiah said to all the people and all the women, "Hear the word of the LORD, all you Judeans who are in the land of Egypt,
25 Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: You and your wives have accomplished in deeds what you declared in words, saying, 'We are determined to perform the vows that we have made, to make offerings to the queen of heaven and to pour out libations to her.' By all means, keep your vows and make your libations!
26 Therefore hear the word of the LORD, all you Judeans who live in the land of Egypt: Lo, I swear by my great name, says the LORD, that my name shall no longer be pronounced on the lips of any of the people of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, 'As the Lord GOD lives.'
27 I am going to watch over them for harm and not for good; all the people of Judah who are in the land of Egypt shall perish by the sword and by famine, until not one is left.
28 And those who escape the sword shall return from the land of Egypt to the land of Judah, few in number; and all the remnant of Judah, who have come to the land of Egypt to settle, shall know whose words will stand, mine or theirs!
29 This shall be the sign to you, says the LORD, that I am going to punish you in this place, in order that you may know that my words against you will surely be carried out:
30 Thus says the LORD, I am going to give Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, into the hands of his enemies, those who seek his life, just as I gave King Zedekiah of Judah into the hand of King Nebuchadrezzar of Babylon, his enemy who sought his life."

2 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Ye H859 PPRO-2MS have seen H7200 all H3605 NMS the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO I have brought H935 upon H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 , and upon H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 ; and , behold H2009 , this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS they are a desolation H2723 , and no H369 W-NPAR man dwelleth H3427 therein ,
3 Because H6440 M-CMP of their wickedness H7451 CFS-3MP which H834 RPRO they have committed H6213 VQQ3MP to provoke me to anger H3707 , in that they went H1980 L-VQFC to burn incense H6999 , and to serve H5647 other H312 AMP gods H430 , whom H834 RPRO they knew H3045 not H3808 NADV , neither they H1992 PPRO-3MP , ye H859 PPRO-2MS , nor your fathers H1 .
4 Howbeit I sent H7971 unto H413 you all H3605 NMS my servants H5650 the prophets H5030 , rising early H7925 and sending H7971 them , saying H559 L-VQFC , Oh H4994 IJEC , do H6213 not H408 NPAR this H2063 D-DFS abominable H8441 thing H1697 that H834 RPRO I hate H8130 .
5 But they hearkened H8085 VQQ3MP not H3808 W-NPAR , nor H3808 W-NPAR inclined H5186 VHQ3MP their ear H241 CFS-3MP to turn H7725 from their wickedness H7451 , to burn H6999 no H1115 L-NPAR incense unto other H312 gods H430 .
6 Wherefore my fury H2534 and mine anger H639 was poured forth H5413 , and was kindled H1197 W-VQY3FS in the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 and in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem H3389 ; and they are H1961 wasted H2723 and desolate H8077 , as at this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
7 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Wherefore H4100 L-IGAT commit H6213 ye H859 PPRO-2MS this great H1419 AFS evil H7451 AFS against H413 PREP your souls H5315 , to cut off H3772 from you man H376 NMS and woman H802 , child H5768 and suckling H3243 , out of Judah H3063 , to leave H3498 you none H1115 L-NPAR to remain H7611 ;
8 In that ye provoke me unto wrath H3707 with the works H4639 of your hands H3027 , burning incense H6999 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , whither H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS be gone H935 to dwell H1481 L-VQFC , that H4616 L-CONJ ye might cut yourselves off H3772 , and that H4616 ye might be H1961 a curse H7045 and a reproach H2781 among all H3605 the nations H1471 of the earth H776 D-GFS ?
9 Have ye forgotten H7911 the wickedness H7451 of your fathers H1 , and the wickedness H7451 of the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 , and the wickedness H7451 of their wives H802 , and your own wickedness H7451 , and the wickedness H7451 of your wives H802 , which H834 RPRO they have committed H6213 VQQ3MP in the land H776 B-GFS of Judah H3063 , and in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem H3389 ?
10 They are not H3808 NADV humbled H1792 even unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS , neither H3808 W-NADV have they feared H3372 , nor H3808 ADV walked H1980 VQQ3MP in my law H8451 , nor in my statutes H2708 , that H834 RPRO I set H5414 VQQ1MS before H6440 you and before H6440 WL-CMP your fathers H1 .
11 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Behold H2009 , I will set H7760 VQQ3MS my face H6440 NMP-1MS against you for evil H7451 , and to cut off H3772 all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 .
12 And I will take H3947 the remnant H7611 of Judah H3063 , that H834 RPRO have set H7760 VQQ3MP their faces H6440 to go into H935 L-VQFC the land H776 of Egypt H4714 EFS to sojourn H1481 L-VQFC there H8033 ADV , and they shall all H3605 CONJ be consumed H8552 , and fall H5307 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS ; they shall even be consumed H8552 by the sword H2719 and by the famine H7458 : they shall die H4191 VQY3MP , from the least H6996 even unto H5704 W-PREP the greatest H1419 AMS , by the sword H2719 and by the famine H7458 : and they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS an execration H423 , and an astonishment H8047 , and a curse H7045 , and a reproach H2781 .
13 For I will punish H6485 them that dwell H3427 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , as H834 K-RPRO I have punished H6485 Jerusalem H3389 , by the sword H2719 , by the famine H7458 , and by the pestilence H1698 :
14 So that none H3808 W-NPAR of the remnant H7611 of Judah H3063 , which are gone H935 into the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 to sojourn H1481 there H8033 ADV , shall H1961 VQY3MS escape H6412 or remain H8300 , that they should return H7725 into the land H776 GFS of Judah H3063 , to the which H834 RPRO they H1992 PPRO-3MP have a desire H5375 to return H7725 to dwell H3427 L-VQFC there H8033 ADV : for H3588 CONJ none H3808 W-NPAR shall return H7725 but H518 PART such as shall escape H6412 .
15 Then all H3605 NMS the men H376 D-NMP which knew H3045 that H3588 CONJ their wives H802 had burned incense H6999 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 , and all H3605 NMS the women H802 D-NFP that stood by H5975 , a great H1419 AMS multitude H6951 , even all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that dwelt H3427 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , in Pathros H6624 , answered H6030 Jeremiah H3414 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
16 As for the word H1697 D-NMS that H834 RPRO thou hast spoken H1696 unto H413 us in the name H8034 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , we will not H369 hearken H8085 unto H413 thee .
17 But H3588 CONJ we will certainly do H6213 whatsoever H3605 NMS thing H1697 D-NMS goeth forth H3318 VQQ3MS out of our own mouth H6310 , to burn incense H6999 unto the queen H4446 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and to pour out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her , as H834 RPRO we have done H6213 , we H587 PPRO-1MP , and our fathers H1 , our kings H4428 , and our princes H8269 , in the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 , and in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem H3389 : for then had we plenty H7646 of victuals H3899 NMS , and were H1961 well H2896 , and saw H7200 no H3808 NADV evil H7451 .
18 But since H227 ADV we left off H2308 to burn incense H6999 to the queen H4446 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and to pour out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her , we have wanted H2637 all H3605 CONJ things , and have been consumed H8552 by the sword H2719 and by the famine H7458 .
19 And when H3588 we H587 PPRO-1MP burned incense H6999 to the queen H4446 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and poured out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her , did we make H6213 her cakes H3561 to worship H6087 her , and pour out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her , without H1107 our men H376 ?
20 Then Jeremiah H3414 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , to H5921 PREP the men H1397 , and to H5921 PREP the women H802 D-NFP , and to H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 which had given him that answer H6030 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
21 The incense H7002 that H834 RPRO ye burned H6999 in the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 , and in the streets H2351 of Jerusalem H3389 , ye H859 PPRO-2MS , and your fathers H1 , your kings H4428 , and your princes H8269 , and the people H5971 of the land H776 D-GFS , did not H3808 D-NPAR the LORD H3068 EDS remember H2142 them , and came H5927 it not into H5921 PREP his mind H3820 CMS-3MS ?
22 So that the LORD H3068 EDS could H3201 VQY3MS no H3808 W-NPAR longer H5750 ADV bear H5375 , because H6440 M-CMP of the evil H7455 of your doings H4611 , and because H6440 M-CMP of the abominations H8441 which H834 RPRO ye have committed H6213 ; therefore is H1961 W-VQY3FS your land H776 a desolation H2723 , and an astonishment H8047 , and a curse H7045 , without H369 an inhabitant H3427 VQPMS , as at this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
23 Because H6440 M-CMP ye have burned incense H6999 , and because H834 RPRO ye have sinned H2398 against the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and have not H3808 W-NPAR obeyed H8085 the voice H6963 B-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , nor H3808 W-NPAR walked H1980 in his law H8451 , nor in his statutes H2708 , nor in his testimonies H5715 ; therefore H3651 ADV this H2063 D-DFS evil H7451 D-AFS is happened unto H7122 you , as at this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
24 Moreover Jeremiah H3414 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , and to H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the women H802 D-NFP , Hear H8085 VQI2MP the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 that H834 RPRO are in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 :
25 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC ; Ye H859 PPRO-2MS and your wives H802 have both spoken H1696 with your mouths H6310 , and fulfilled H4390 with your hand H3027 , saying H559 L-VQFC , We will surely perform H6213 our vows H5088 that H834 RPRO we have vowed H5087 , to burn incense H6999 to the queen H4446 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and to pour out H5258 drink offerings H5262 unto her : ye will surely accomplish H6965 your vows H5088 , and surely perform H6213 your vows H5088 .
26 Therefore H3651 L-ADV hear H8085 VQI2MP ye the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , all H3605 NMS Judah H3063 that dwell H3427 in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 ; Behold H2009 , I have sworn H7650 by my great H1419 D-AMS name H8034 , saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , that my name H8034 shall no H518 PART more H5750 ADV be H1961 VQY3MS named H7121 in the mouth H6310 B-CMS of any H3605 NMS man H376 NMS of Judah H3063 in all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 , saying H559 , The Lord H136 EDS GOD H3069 liveth H2416 AMS .
27 Behold H2009 , I will watch H8245 over H5921 PREP-3MP them for evil H7451 , and not H3808 W-NPAR for good H2896 : and all H3605 CMS the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 that H834 RPRO are in the land H776 B-GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS shall be consumed H8552 by the sword H2719 and by the famine H7458 , until H5704 PREP there be an end H3615 of them .
28 Yet a small H4962 CMP number H4557 NMS that escape H6412 the sword H2719 GFS shall return H7725 VQY3MP-3FP out of H4480 PREP the land H776 GFS of Egypt H4714 EFS into the land H776 GFS of Judah H3063 , and all H3605 NMS the remnant H7611 of Judah H3063 , that are gone H935 into the land H776 of Egypt H4714 EFS to sojourn H1481 L-VQFC there H8033 ADV , shall know H3045 whose H4310 IPRO words H1697 CMS shall stand H6965 VQY3MS , mine H4480 PREP , or theirs H4480 PREP .
29 And this H2063 shall be a sign H226 unto you , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 EDS , that H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS will punish H6485 you in this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 , that H4616 L-CONJ ye may know H3045 that H3588 CONJ my words H1697 CMP-1MS shall surely stand H6965 against H5921 PREP-2MP you for evil H7451 :
30 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Behold H2009 , I will give H5414 VQPMS Pharaoh Hophra H6548 king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS into the hand H3027 B-CFS of his enemies H341 , and into the hand H3027 of them that seek H1245 his life H5315 NMS-3MS ; as H834 K-RPRO I gave H5414 VQQ1MS Zedekiah H6667 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Nebuchadnezzar H5019 king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS , his enemy H341 , and that sought H1245 his life H5315 CFS-3MS .
