Acts 9:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Meanwhile Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest
2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem.
3 Now as he was going along and approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him.
4 He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?"
5 He asked, "Who are you, Lord?" The reply came, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.
6 But get up and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do."
7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless because they heard the voice but saw no one.
8 Saul got up from the ground, and though his eyes were open, he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus.
9 For three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank.
10 Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord said to him in a vision, "Ananias." He answered, "Here I am, Lord."
11 The Lord said to him, "Get up and go to the street called Straight, and at the house of Judas look for a man of Tarsus named Saul. At this moment he is praying,
12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him so that he might regain his sight."
13 But Ananias answered, "Lord, I have heard from many about this man, how much evil he has done to your saints in Jerusalem;
14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who invoke your name."
15 But the Lord said to him, "Go, for he is an instrument whom I have chosen to bring my name before Gentiles and kings and before the people of Israel;
16 I myself will show him how much he must suffer for the sake of my name."
17 So Ananias went and entered the house. He laid his hands on Saul and said, "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on your way here, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
18 And immediately something like scales fell from his eyes, and his sight was restored. Then he got up and was baptized,
19 and after taking some food, he regained his strength. For several days he was with the disciples in Damascus,
20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, "He is the Son of God."
21 All who heard him were amazed and said, "Is not this the man who made havoc in Jerusalem among those who invoked this name? And has he not come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?"
22 Saul became increasingly more powerful and confounded the Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that Jesus was the Messiah.
23 After some time had passed, the Jews plotted to kill him,
24 but their plot became known to Saul. They were watching the gates day and night so that they might kill him;
25 but his disciples took him by night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a basket.
26 When he had come to Jerusalem, he attempted to join the disciples; and they were all afraid of him, for they did not believe that he was a disciple.
27 But Barnabas took him, brought him to the apostles, and described for them how on the road he had seen the Lord, who had spoken to him, and how in Damascus he had spoken boldly in the name of Jesus.
28 So he went in and out among them in Jerusalem, speaking boldly in the name of the Lord.
29 He spoke and argued with the Hellenists; but they were attempting to kill him.
30 When the believers learned of it, they brought him down to Caesarea and sent him off to Tarsus.
31 Meanwhile the church throughout Judea, Galilee, and Samaria had peace and was built up. Living in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it increased in numbers.
32 Now as Peter went here and there among all the believers, he came down also to the saints living in Lydda.
33 There he found a man named Aeneas, who had been bedridden for eight years, for he was paralyzed.
34 Peter said to him, "Aeneas, Jesus Christ heals you; get up and make your bed!" And immediately he got up.
35 And all the residents of Lydda and Sharon saw him and turned to the Lord.
36 Now in Joppa there was a disciple whose name was Tabitha, which in Greek is Dorcas. She was devoted to good works and acts of charity.
37 At that time she became ill and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in a room upstairs.
38 Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples, who heard that Peter was there, sent two men to him with the request, "Please come to us without delay."
39 So Peter got up and went with them; and when he arrived, they took him to the room upstairs. All the widows stood beside him, weeping and showing tunics and other clothing that Dorcas had made while she was with them.
40 Peter put all of them outside, and then he knelt down and prayed. He turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up." Then she opened her eyes, and seeing Peter, she sat up.
41 He gave her his hand and helped her up. Then calling the saints and widows, he showed her to be alive.
42 This became known throughout Joppa, and many believed in the Lord.
43 Meanwhile he stayed in Joppa for some time with a certain Simon, a tanner.

3 And G1161 CONJ as he journeyed G4198 V-PNN , he G846 P-ASM came near G1448 V-PAN Damascus G1154 N-DSF : and G2532 CONJ suddenly G1810 ADV there shined round about G4015 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM a light G5457 N-NSN from G575 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM :
4 And G2532 CONJ he fell G4098 V-2AAP-NSM to G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF earth G1093 N-ASF , and heard G191 V-AAI-3S a voice G5456 N-ASF saying G3004 V-PAP-ASF unto him G848 , Saul G4549 N-PRI , Saul G4549 N-PRI , why G5101 I-ASN persecutest G1377 V-PAI-2S thou me G3165 P-1AS ?
5 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Who G5101 I-NSM art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou , Lord G2962 N-VSM ? And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S Jesus G2424 N-NSM whom G3739 R-ASM thou G4771 P-2NS persecutest G1377 V-PAI-2S : it is hard G4642 for thee G4671 to kick G2979 against G4314 the pricks G2759 .
6 And G5037 he trembling G5141 and G2532 CONJ astonished G2284 said G2036 , Lord G2962 , what G5101 I-ASN wilt G2309 thou have me G3165 to do G4160 V-PAN ? And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF Lord G2962 said unto G4314 him G846 , Arise G450 V-2AAM-2S , and G2532 CONJ go G1525 V-2AAM-2S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF city G4172 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ it shall be told G2980 V-FPI-3S thee G4671 P-2DS what G5101 I-ASN thou must G1163 V-PQI-3S do G4160 V-PAN .
7 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM men G435 N-NPM which journeyed with G4922 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-DSM stood G2476 V-LAI-3P speechless G1769 N-NPM , hearing G191 V-PAP-NPM a G3303 PRT voice G5456 N-GSF , but G1161 CONJ seeing G2334 V-PAP-NPM no man G3367 A-ASM .
8 And G1161 CONJ Saul G4569 N-NSM arose G1453 V-API-3S from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF ; and G1161 CONJ when his G3588 T-GPM eyes G3788 N-GPM were opened G455 V-RPP-GPM , he saw G991 V-IAI-3S no man G3762 A-ASM : but G1161 CONJ they led him by the hand G5496 V-PAP-NPM , and brought G1521 V-2AAI-3P him into G1519 PREP Damascus G1154 N-ASF .
9 And G2532 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S three G5140 A-APF days G2250 N-APF without G3361 PRT-N sight G991 V-PAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ neither G3756 PRT-N did eat G5315 V-2AAI-3S nor G3761 ADV drink G4095 V-2AAI-3S .
10 And G1161 CONJ there was G2258 V-IXI-3S a certain G5100 X-NSM disciple G3101 N-NSM at G1722 PREP Damascus G1154 N-DSF named G3686 N-DSN Ananias G367 N-NSM ; and G2532 CONJ to G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM in G1722 PREP a vision G3705 N-DSN , Ananias G367 N-VSM . And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I G1473 P-1NS am here , Lord G2962 N-VSM .
11 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM said unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , Arise G450 V-2AAP-NSM , and go G4198 V-AOM-2S into G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF street G4505 N-ASF which is called G2564 V-PPP-ASF Straight G2117 A-ASF , and G2532 CONJ inquire G2212 V-AAM-2S in G1722 PREP the house G3614 N-DSF of Judas G2455 N-GSM for one called G3686 N-DSN Saul G4569 N-ASM of Tarsus G5018 N-ASM : for G1063 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , he prayeth G4336 V-PNI-3S ,

13 Then G1161 CONJ Ananias G367 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S , Lord G2962 N-VSM , I have heard G191 V-2RAI-1S by G575 PREP many G4183 A-GPM of G4012 PREP this G3588 T-GSM man G435 N-GSM , how much G3745 K-APN evil G2556 A-APN he hath done G4160 V-AAI-3S to thy G3588 T-DPM saints G40 A-DPM at G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI :
14 And G2532 CONJ here G5602 ADV he hath G2192 V-PAI-3S authority G1849 N-ASF from G3844 PREP the G3588 T-GPM chief priests G749 N-GPM to bind G1210 V-AAN all G3956 A-APM that call on G1941 V-PMP-APM thy G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN .
15 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , Go thy way G4198 V-PNM-2S : for G3754 CONJ he G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S a chosen G1589 N-GSF vessel G4632 N-NSN unto me G3427 P-1DS , to bear G941 V-AAN my G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN before G1799 ADV the Gentiles G1484 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ kings G935 N-GPM , and G5037 PRT the children G5207 N-GPM of Israel G2474 N-PRI :

19 And G2532 CONJ when he had received G2983 V-2AAP-NSM meat G5160 N-ASF , he was strengthened G1765 V-AAI-3S . 20 And G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV he G3588 T-ASM preached G2784 V-IAI-3S Christ G5547 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF , that G3754 CONJ he G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
21 But G1161 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM that heard G191 V-PAP-NPM him were amazed G1839 V-IMI-3P , and G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P ; Is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N this G3588 T-NSM he G3588 T-APM that G3588 T-APM destroyed G4199 V-AAP-NSM them which called on G1941 V-PMP-APM this G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN in G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ came G2064 V-2RAI-3S hither G5602 ADV for G1519 PREP that intent G5124 D-ASN , that G2443 CONJ he might bring G71 V-2AAS-3S them G846 P-APM bound G1210 V-RPP-APM unto G1909 PREP the G3588 T-APM chief priests G749 N-APM ?
22 But G1161 CONJ Saul G4569 N-NSM increased the more in strength G1743 V-IPI-3S , and G2532 CONJ confounded G4797 V-IAI-3S the G3588 T-APM Jews G2453 A-APM which dwelt G2730 V-PAP-APM at G1722 PREP Damascus G1154 N-DSF , proving G4822 V-PAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ this G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S very Christ G5547 N-NSM .
23 And G1161 CONJ after that G5613 ADV many G2425 A-NPF days G2250 N-NPF were fulfilled G4137 V-IPI-3P , the G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM took counsel G4823 V-AMI-3P to kill G337 V-2AAN him G846 P-ASM :
24 But G1161 CONJ their G3588 T-NSF laying await G1917 N-NSF was known G1097 V-API-3S of Saul G4569 N-DSM . And G5037 PRT they watched G3906 V-IAI-3P the G3588 T-APF gates G4439 N-APF day G2250 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ night G3571 N-GSF to G3704 ADV kill G337 V-AAS-3P him G846 P-ASM .
25 Then G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM took G2983 V-2AAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM by night G3571 N-GSF , and let him down G2524 V-AAI-3P by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSN wall G5038 N-GSN in G1722 PREP a basket G4711 N-DSF .
26 And G1161 CONJ when Saul G4569 N-NSM was come G3854 V-2ADP-NSM to G1519 Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , he attempted G3987 V-INI-3S to join himself G2853 V-PPN to the G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM : but G2532 CONJ they were all afraid G5399 V-INI-3P of him G846 P-ASM , and believed G4100 V-PAP-NPM not G3361 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ he was G2076 V-PXI-3S a disciple G3101 N-NSM .
27 But G1161 CONJ Barnabas G921 N-NSM took G1949 V-2ADP-NSM him G846 P-ASM , and brought G71 V-2AAI-3S him to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM apostles G652 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ declared G1334 V-ADI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM how G4459 ADV he had seen G1492 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ that G3754 CONJ he had spoken G2980 V-AAI-3S to him G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ how G4459 ADV he had preached boldly G3955 V-ADI-3S at G1722 PREP Damascus G1154 N-DSF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN of Jesus G2424 N-GSM .
28 And G2532 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S with G3326 PREP them G846 P-GPM coming in G1531 V-PNP-NSM and G2532 CONJ going out G1607 V-PNP-NSM at G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI .
29 And G2532 CONJ he spake boldly G3955 in G1722 the G3588 T-APM name G3686 of the G3588 T-NPM Lord G2962 Jesus G2424 , and G5037 PRT disputed G4802 V-IAI-3S against G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM Grecians G1675 N-APM : but G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-APM went about G2021 V-IAI-3P to slay G337 V-2AAN him G846 P-ASM .
30 Which when G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM brethren G80 N-NPM knew G1921 V-2AAP-NPM , they brought him down G2609 V-2AAI-3P to G1519 PREP Caesarea G2542 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ sent him forth V-AAI-3P to G1519 PREP Tarsus G5019 N-ASF .
31 Then G3767 CONJ had G2192 V-IAI-3P the G3588 T-NPF churches G1577 N-NPF rest G1515 N-ASF throughout G2596 PREP all G3650 A-GSF Judea G2449 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ Galilee G1056 N-GSF and G2532 CONJ Samaria G4540 N-GSF , and were edified G3618 V-PPP-NPF ; and G2532 CONJ walking G4198 V-PNP-NPF in the G3588 T-DSM fear G5401 N-DSM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM Lord G2962 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ in the G3588 T-DSF comfort G3874 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN , were multiplied G4129 V-IPI-3P .
32 And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , as Peter G4074 N-ASM passed G1330 V-PNP-ASM throughout G1223 PREP all G3956 A-GPN quarters , he came down G2718 V-2AAN also G2532 CONJ to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM saints G40 A-APM which dwelt G2730 V-PAP-APM at Lydda G3069 N-ASF .
33 And G1161 CONJ there G1563 ADV he found G2147 V-2AAI-3S a certain G5100 X-ASM man G444 N-ASM named G3686 N-DSN Aeneas G132 N-ASM , which had kept his bed G2621 V-PNP-ASM eight G3638 A-NUI years G2094 N-GPN , and G3739 R-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S sick of the palsy G3886 V-RPP-NSM .
34 And G2532 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Aeneas G132 N-VSM Jesus G2424 N-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM maketh thee whole G2390 V-PNI-3S : arise G450 V-2AAM-2S , and G2532 CONJ make thy bed G4766 V-AAM-2S . And G2532 CONJ he arose G450 V-2AAI-3S immediately G2112 ADV .
35 And G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM that dwelt G2730 V-PAP-NPM at Lydda G3069 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ Sharon G4565 N-APM saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , and G3748 R-NPM turned G1994 V-AAI-3P to G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-ASM .
36 Now G1161 CONJ there was G2258 V-IXI-3S at G1722 PREP Joppa G2445 N-DSF a certain G5100 X-NSM disciple G3102 N-NSF named G3686 N-DSN Tabitha G5000 N-PRI , which G3739 R-NSF by interpretation G1329 V-PPP-NSF is called G3004 V-PPI-3S Dorcas G1393 N-NSF : this woman G3778 D-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S full G4134 A-NSF of good G18 A-GPN works G2041 N-GPN and G2532 CONJ almsdeeds G1654 N-GPF which G3739 R-GPF she did G4160 V-IAI-3S .
37 And G1161 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S in G1722 PREP those G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF , that she G846 P-ASF was sick G770 V-AAP-ASF , and died G599 V-2AAN : whom when G1161 CONJ they had washed G3068 V-AAP-NPM , they G846 P-ASF laid G5087 V-AAI-3P her in G1722 PREP an upper chamber G5253 N-DSN .
38 And G1161 CONJ forasmuch as Lydda G3069 N-GSF was G5607 V-PXP-GSF nigh to G1451 ADV Joppa G2445 N-DSF , and the G3588 T-NPM disciples G3101 N-NPM had heard G191 V-AAP-NPM that G3754 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM was G2076 V-PXI-3S there G1722 PREP , they sent G649 V-AAI-3P unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-DSF two G1417 men G435 , desiring G3870 V-PAP-NPM him that he would not G3361 PRT-N delay G3635 V-AAN to come G1330 V-2AAN to G2193 CONJ them G846 P-ASM .
39 Then G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM arose G450 V-2AAP-NSM and went with G4905 V-2AAI-3S them G846 P-DPM . 40 But G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM put G1544 V-2AAP-NSM them all G3956 A-APM forth G1854 ADV , and kneeled down G5087 V-2AAP-NSM , and prayed G4336 V-ADI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ turning G1994 V-AAP-NSM him to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Tabitha G5000 N-PRI , arise G450 V-2AAM-2S . And G1161 CONJ she G3588 T-APN opened G455 V-AAI-3S her G3588 T-APM eyes G3788 N-APM : and G2532 CONJ when she G3588 T-ASM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSF Peter G4074 N-ASM , she sat up G339 V-AAI-3S .
