2 Chronicles 26:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king to succeed his father Amaziah.
2 He rebuilt Eloth and restored it to Judah, after the king slept with his ancestors.
3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned fifty-two years in Jerusalem. His mother's name was Jecoliah of Jerusalem.
4 He did what was right in the sight of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done.
5 He set himself to seek God in the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God; and as long as he sought the LORD, God made him prosper.
6 He went out and made war against the Philistines, and broke down the wall of Gath and the wall of Jabneh and the wall of Ashdod; he built cities in the territory of Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines.
7 God helped him against the Philistines, against the Arabs who lived in Gur-baal, and against the Meunites.
8 The Ammonites paid tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread even to the border of Egypt, for he became very strong.
9 Moreover Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate, and at the Angle, and fortified them.
10 He built towers in the wilderness and hewed out many cisterns, for he had large herds, both in the Shephelah and in the plain, and he had farmers and vinedressers in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil.
11 Moreover Uzziah had an army of soldiers, fit for war, in divisions according to the numbers in the muster made by the secretary Jeiel and the officer Maaseiah, under the direction of Hananiah, one of the king's commanders.
12 The whole number of the heads of ancestral houses of mighty warriors was two thousand six hundred.
13 Under their command was an army of three hundred seven thousand five hundred, who could make war with mighty power, to help the king against the enemy.
14 Uzziah provided for all the army the shields, spears, helmets, coats of mail, bows, and stones for slinging.
15 In Jerusalem he set up machines, invented by skilled workers, on the towers and the corners for shooting arrows and large stones. And his fame spread far, for he was marvelously helped until he became strong.
16 But when he had become strong he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was false to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to make offering on the altar of incense.
17 But the priest Azariah went in after him, with eighty priests of the LORD who were men of valor;
18 they withstood King Uzziah, and said to him, "It is not for you, Uzziah, to make offering to the LORD, but for the priests the descendants of Aaron, who are consecrated to make offering. Go out of the sanctuary; for you have done wrong, and it will bring you no honor from the LORD God."
19 Then Uzziah was angry. Now he had a censer in his hand to make offering, and when he became angry with the priests a leprous disease broke out on his forehead, in the presence of the priests in the house of the LORD, by the altar of incense.
20 When the chief priest Azariah, and all the priests, looked at him, he was leprous in his forehead. They hurried him out, and he himself hurried to get out, because the LORD had struck him.
21 King Uzziah was leprous to the day of his death, and being leprous lived in a separate house, for he was excluded from the house of the LORD. His son Jotham was in charge of the palace of the king, governing the people of the land.
22 Now the rest of the acts of Uzziah, from first to last, the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz wrote.
23 Uzziah slept with his ancestors; they buried him near his ancestors in the burial field that belonged to the kings, for they said, "He is leprous." His son Jotham succeeded him.

3 Sixteen H6240 MFS years H8141 NFS old H1121 was Uzziah H5818 when he began to reign H4427 , and he reigned H4427 fifty H2572 W-MMP and two H8147 W-OFD years H8141 NFS in Jerusalem H3389 . His mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s name H8034 W-CMS also was Jecoliah H3203 of H4480 PREP Jerusalem H3389 .
4 And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO his father H1 Amaziah H558 did H6213 W-VQY3MS .
5 And he sought H1961 W-VQY3MS God H430 EDP in the days H3117 B-CMP of Zechariah H2148 NMP , who had understanding H995 D-VHPMS in the visions H7200 B-VQFC of God H430 NAME-4MP : and as long as H3117 WB-CMP he sought H1875 L-VQFC the LORD H3068 EDS , God H430 NAME-4MP made him to prosper H6743 VHQ3MS-3MS .
6 And he went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS and warred H3898 against the Philistines H6430 , and broke down H6555 the wall H2346 of Gath H1661 , and the wall H2346 of Jabneh H2996 , and the wall H2346 of Ashdod H795 , and built H1129 cities H5892 GFP about Ashdod H795 , and among the Philistines H6430 .
7 And God H430 D-NAME-4MP helped H5826 him against H5921 PREP the Philistines H6430 TMS , and against H5921 PREP the Arabians H6163 that dwelt H3427 in Gur H1485 - baal , and the Mehunims H4586 .
8 And the Ammonites H5984 gave H5414 W-VQY3MP gifts H4503 NFS to Uzziah H5818 : and his name H8034 CMS-3MS spread abroad H1980 W-VQY3MS even to H5704 PREP the entering in H935 of Egypt H4714 EFS ; for H3588 CONJ he strengthened H2388 himself exceedingly H4605 .
9 Moreover Uzziah H5818 built H1129 W-VQY3MS towers H4026 in Jerusalem H3389 at H5921 PREP the corner H6438 gate H8179 NMS , and at H5921 PREP the valley H1516 gate H8179 NMS , and at H5921 PREP the turning H4740 of the wall , and fortified H2388 them .
10 Also he built H1129 W-VQY3MS towers H4026 in the desert H4057 , and digged H2672 many H7227 AMP wells H953 : for H3588 CONJ he had H1961 VQQ3MS much H7227 cattle H4735 NMS , both in the low country H8219 , and in the plains H4334 : husbandmen H406 also , and vinedressers H3755 in the mountains H2022 , and in Carmel H3760 : for H3588 CONJ he loved H1961 husbandry H127 .
11 Moreover Uzziah H5818 had H1961 W-VQY3MS a host H2428 NMS of fighting men H6213 , that went out H3318 to war H6635 NMS by bands H1416 , according to the number H4557 B-CMS of their account H6486 by the hand H3027 B-CFS of Jeiel H3273 the scribe H5608 and Maaseiah H4641 the ruler H7860 , under H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of Hananiah H2608 , one of the king H4428 \'s captains H8269 .
12 The whole H3605 NMS number H4557 CMS of the chief H7218 CMP of the fathers H1 of the mighty men H1368 of valor H2428 were two thousand H505 and six H8337 W-RFS hundred H3967 .
13 And under H5921 PREP their hand H3027 was an army H2428 , three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS and seven H7651 W-BMS thousand H505 MMP and five H2568 W-BFS hundred H3967 BFP , that made H6213 war H4421 NFS with mighty H2428 power H3581 B-NMS , to help H5826 the king H4428 against H5921 PREP the enemy H341 .
14 And Uzziah H5818 prepared H3559 for them throughout all H3605 L-CMS the host H6635 shields H4043 , and spears H7420 , and helmets H3553 , and habergeons H8302 , and bows H7198 , and slings H7050 to cast stones H68 .
15 And he made H6213 W-VQY3MS in Jerusalem H3389 engines H2810 , invented H4284 by cunning men H2803 , to be H1961 on H5921 PREP the towers H4026 and upon H5921 PREP the bulwarks H6438 , to shoot H3384 arrows H2671 and great H1419 stones H68 withal . And his name H8034 CMS-3MS spread H3318 W-VQY3MS far abroad H5704 PREP ; for H3588 CONJ he was marvelously H6381 helped H5826 , till H5704 PREP he was strong H2388 .
16 But when he was strong H2394 , his heart H3820 CMS-3MS was lifted up H1361 to H5704 PREP his destruction H7843 : for he transgressed H4603 against the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS his God H430 CMP-3MS , and went H935 W-VQY3MS into H413 PREP the temple H1964 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS to burn incense H6999 upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 of incense H7004 .
17 And Azariah H5838 the priest H3548 went in H935 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP-3MS him , and with H5973 W-PREP-3MS him fourscore H8084 priests H3548 NMP of the LORD H3068 L-EDS , that were valiant men H1121 :
18 And they withstood H5921 PREP Uzziah H5818 the king H4428 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto him , It appertaineth not H3808 NADV unto thee , Uzziah H5818 , to burn incense H6999 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , but H3588 CONJ to the priests H3548 the sons H1121 of Aaron H175 , that are consecrated H6942 to burn incense H6999 : go out H3318 VQI2MS of H4480 PREP the sanctuary H4720 ; for H3588 CONJ thou hast trespassed H4603 ; neither H3808 ADV shall it be for thine honor H3519 from the LORD H3068 God H430 NAME-4MP .
19 Then Uzziah H5818 was wroth H2196 , and had a censer H4730 in his hand H3027 to burn incense H6999 : and while he was wroth H2196 with H5973 PREP the priests H3548 , the leprosy H6883 even rose up H2224 in his forehead H4696 before H6440 L-CMP the priests H3548 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , from beside H5921 M-PREP the incense H7004 altar H4196 .
20 And Azariah H5838 the chief H7218 priest H3548 NMS , and all H3605 W-CMS the priests H3548 , looked H6437 upon H413 PREP-3MS him , and , behold H2009 IJEC , he H1931 PPRO-3MS was leprous H6879 in his forehead H4696 , and they thrust him out H926 from thence H8033 M-ADV ; yea , himself H1931 PPRO-3MS hasted H1765 also H1571 W-CONJ to go out H3318 , because H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS had smitten H5060 him .
21 And Uzziah H5818 the king H4428 D-NMS was H1961 W-VQY3MS a leper H6879 unto H5704 PREP the day H3117 NMS of his death H4194 , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS in a several H2669 house H1004 CMS , being a leper H6879 ; for H3588 CONJ he was cut off H1504 from the house H1004 of the LORD H3068 EDS : and Jotham H3147 his son H1121 CMS-3MS was over H5921 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS , judging H8199 the people H5971 NMS of the land H776 D-GFS .
22 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Uzziah H5818 , first H7223 and last H314 , did Isaiah H3470 the prophet H5030 , the son H1121 CMS of Amoz H531 , write H3789 CMS .
23 So Uzziah H5818 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and they buried H6912 him with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 in the field H7704 of the burial H6900 which H834 RPRO belonged to the kings H4428 ; for H3588 CONJ they said H559 VQQ3MP , He H1931 PPRO-3MS is a leper H6879 : and Jotham H3147 his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
