Ezra 9:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, "The people of Israel, the priests, and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands with their abominations, from the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites.
2 For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons. Thus the holy seed has mixed itself with the peoples of the lands, and in this faithlessness the officials and leaders have led the way."
3 When I heard this, I tore my garment and my mantle, and pulled hair from my head and beard, and sat appalled.
4 Then all who trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat appalled until the evening sacrifice.
5 At the evening sacrifice I got up from my fasting, with my garments and my mantle torn, and fell on my knees, spread out my hands to the LORD my God,
6 and said, "O my God, I am too ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities have risen higher than our heads, and our guilt has mounted up to the heavens.
7 From the days of our ancestors to this day we have been deep in guilt, and for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been handed over to the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, and to utter shame, as is now the case.
8 But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the LORD our God, who has left us a remnant, and given us a stake in his holy place, in order that he may brighten our eyes and grant us a little sustenance in our slavery.
9 For we are slaves; yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to give us new life to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us a wall in Judea and Jerusalem.
10 "And now, our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments,
11 which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, 'The land that you are entering to possess is a land unclean with the pollutions of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations. They have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness.
12 Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, so that you may be strong and eat the good of the land and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.'
13 After all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this,
14 shall we break your commandments again and intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? Would you not be angry with us until you destroy us without remnant or survivor?
15 O LORD, God of Israel, you are just, but we have escaped as a remnant, as is now the case. Here we are before you in our guilt, though no one can face you because of this."
1 Now when these things H428 PMP were done H3615 , the princes H8269 came H5066 to H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 L-VQFC , The people H5971 of Israel H3478 , and the priests H3548 , and the Levites H3881 , have not H3808 ADV separated themselves H914 from the people H5971 of the lands H776 , doing according to their abominations H8441 , even of the Canaanites H3669 , the Hittites H2850 , the Perizzites H6522 , the Jebusites H2983 D-TMS , the Ammonites H5984 , the Moabites H4125 , the Egyptians H4713 , and the Amorites H567 .
2 For H3588 CONJ they have taken H5375 VQQ3MP of their daughters H1323 for themselves , and for their sons H1121 : so that the holy H6944 seed H2233 NMS have mingled themselves H6148 with the people H5971 of those lands H776 : yea , the hand H3027 of the princes H8269 and rulers H5461 hath been H1961 VQQ3FS chief H7223 in this H2088 D-PMS trespass H4604 .
3 And when I heard H8085 this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS , I rent H7167 my garment H899 and my mantle H4598 , and plucked off H4803 the hair H8181 of my head H7218 CMS-1MS and of my beard H2206 , and sat down H3427 astonished H8074 .
4 Then were assembled H622 unto H413 W-PREP-1MS me every one H3605 NMS that trembled H2730 at the words H1697 of the God H430 of Israel H3478 , because H5921 PREP of the transgression H4604 of those that had been carried away H1473 ; and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS sat H3427 VQPMS astonished H8074 until H5704 PREP the evening H6153 sacrifice H4503 .
5 And at the evening H6153 sacrifice H4503 I arose up H6965 VQQ1MS from my heaviness H8589 ; and having rent H7167 my garment H899 and my mantle H4598 , I fell H3766 upon H5921 PREP my knees H1290 , and spread out H6566 my hands H3709 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS my God H430 CMP-1MS ,
6 And said H559 , O my God H430 , I am ashamed H954 and blush H3637 to lift up H7311 my face H6440 NMP-1MS to H413 PREP-2MS thee , my God H430 : for H3588 CONJ our iniquities H5771 are increased H7235 over H4605 our head H7218 , and our trespass H819 is grown up H1431 unto H5704 PREP the heavens H8064 .
7 Since the days H3117 of our fathers H1 have we H587 PPRO-1MP been in a great H1419 trespass H819 unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS ; and for our iniquities H5771 have we H587 PPRO-1MP , our kings H4428 , and our priests H3548 , been delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the kings H4428 CMP of the lands H776 , to the sword H2719 , to captivity H7628 , and to a spoil H961 , and to confusion H1322 of face H6440 NMP , as it is this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 .
8 And now H6258 W-ADV for a little H4592 K-AMS space H7281 NMS grace H8467 hath been H1961 VQQ3FS showed from the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 , to leave H7604 us a remnant to escape H6413 , and to give H5414 us a nail H3489 in his holy H6944 place H4725 B-CMS , that our God H430 may lighten H215 L-VHFC our eyes H5869 , and give H5414 us a little H4592 AMS reviving H4241 in our bondage H5659 .
9 For H3588 CONJ we H587 PPRO-1MP were bondmen H5650 NMP ; yet our God H430 hath not H3808 NADV forsaken H5800 us in our bondage H5659 , but hath extended H5186 mercy H2617 NMS unto H5921 PREP-1MP us in the sight H6440 L-CMP of the kings H4428 CMP of Persia H6539 , to give H5414 us a reviving H4241 , to set up H7311 the house H1004 CMS of our God H430 , and to repair H5975 the desolations H2723 thereof , and to give H5414 us a wall H1447 in Judah H3063 and in Jerusalem H3389 .
10 And now H6258 W-ADV , O our God H430 , what H4100 IPRO shall we say H559 VQY1MP after H310 ADV this H2063 DPRO ? for H3588 CONJ we have forsaken H5800 thy commandments H4687 ,
11 Which H834 RPRO thou hast commanded H6680 VPQ2MS by H3027 B-CFS thy servants H5650 the prophets H5030 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The land H776 D-GFS , unto which H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS go H935 to possess H3423 it , is an unclean H5079 land H776 GFS with the filthiness H5079 of the people H5971 of the lands H776 , with their abominations H8441 , which H834 RPRO have filled H4390 it from one end H6310 to H413 PREP another H6310 with their uncleanness H2932 .
12 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore give H5414 not H408 NPAR your daughters H1323 unto their sons H1121 , neither H408 NPAR take H5375 their daughters H1323 unto your sons H1121 , nor H3808 W-NPAR seek H1875 their peace H7965 or their wealth H2896 forever H5704 PREP : that H4616 L-CONJ ye may be strong H2388 , and eat H398 the good H2898 of the land H776 D-GFS , and leave it for an inheritance H3423 to your children H1121 forever H5704 PREP .
13 And after H310 all H3605 NMS that is come H935 upon H5921 PREP-1MP us for our evil H7451 deeds H4639 , and for our great H1419 trespass H819 , seeing H3588 CONJ that thou H859 PPRO-2MS our God H430 hast punished H2820 us less H4295 than our iniquities H5771 deserve , and hast given H5414 us such deliverance H6413 as this H2063 ;
14 Should we again H7725 break H6565 thy commandments H4687 , and join in affinity H2859 with the people H5971 of these H428 D-DPRO-3MP abominations H8441 ? wouldest not H3808 D-NPAR thou be angry H599 with us till H5704 PREP thou hadst consumed H3615 us , so that there should be no H369 remnant H7611 nor escaping H6413 ?
15 O LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS art righteous H6662 AMS : for H3588 CONJ we remain H7604 yet escaped H6413 , as it is this H2063 day H3117 : behold H2009 , we are before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee in our trespasses H819 : for H3588 CONJ we cannot H369 NPAR stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee because H5921 PREP of this H2088 D-PMS .
