Matthew 10:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness.
2 These are the names of the twelve apostles: first, Simon, also known as Peter, and his brother Andrew; James son of Zebedee, and his brother John;
3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;
4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, the one who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Go nowhere among the Gentiles, and enter no town of the Samaritans,
6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.
7 As you go, proclaim the good news, 'The kingdom of heaven has come near.'
8 Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.
9 Take no gold, or silver, or copper in your belts,
10 no bag for your journey, or two tunics, or sandals, or a staff; for laborers deserve their food.
11 Whatever town or village you enter, find out who in it is worthy, and stay there until you leave.
12 As you enter the house, greet it.
13 If the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it; but if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you.
14 If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet as you leave that house or town.
15 Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
16 "See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
17 Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues;
18 and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles.
19 When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time;
20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death;
22 and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved.
23 When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
24 "A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master;
25 it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household!
26 "So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known.
27 What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops.
28 Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father.
30 And even the hairs of your head are all counted.
31 So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.
32 "Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven;
33 but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven.
34 "Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law;
36 and one's foes will be members of one's own household.
37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me;
38 and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me.
39 Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.
40 "Whoever welcomes you welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.
41 Whoever welcomes a prophet in the name of a prophet will receive a prophet's reward; and whoever welcomes a righteous person in the name of a righteous person will receive the reward of the righteous;
42 and whoever gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple-- truly I tell you, none of these will lose their reward."

8 Heal G2323 V-PAM-2P the sick G770 V-PAP-APM , cleanse G2511 V-PAM-2P the lepers G3015 A-APM , raise G1453 the dead G3498 , cast out G1544 V-PAM-2P devils G1140 N-APN : freely G1432 ADV ye have received G2983 V-2AAI-2P , freely G1432 ADV give G1325 V-2AAM-2P .
9 Provide G2932 V-ADS-2P neither G3361 PRT-N gold G5557 N-ASM , nor G3366 CONJ silver G696 N-ASM , nor G3366 CONJ brass G5475 N-ASM in G1519 PREP your G3588 T-APF purses G2223 N-APF ,
10 Nor G3361 PRT-N scrip G4082 N-ASF for G1519 PREP your journey G3598 N-ASF , neither G3366 CONJ two G1417 A-NUI coats G5509 N-APM , neither G3366 CONJ shoes G5266 N-APN , nor G3366 CONJ yet staves G4464 N-APF : for G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM workman G2040 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S worthy G514 A-NSM of G3588 T-GSF his G3588 T-GSF meat G5160 N-GSF .
11 And G1161 CONJ into G1519 PREP whatsoever G3739 R-ASF city G4172 N-ASF or G2228 PRT town G2968 N-ASF ye shall enter G1525 V-2AAS-2P , inquire G1833 V-AAM-2P who G5101 I-NSM in G1722 PREP it G846 P-DSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S worthy G514 A-NSM ; and there G2546 ADV-C abide G3306 V-AAM-2P till ye G2193 CONJ go G1831 V-2AAS-2P thence .
12 And G1161 CONJ when ye come G1525 V-PNP-NPM into G1519 PREP a house G3614 N-ASF , salute G782 V-ADM-2P it G846 P-ASF .
13 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND the G3588 T-NSF house G3614 N-NSF be G5600 V-PXS-3S worthy G514 A-NSF , let your G3588 T-NSF peace G1515 N-NSF come G2064 V-2AAM-3S upon G1909 PREP it G846 P-ASF : but G1161 CONJ if it be not G3362 worthy G514 A-NSF , let your G3588 T-NSF peace G1515 N-NSF return G1994 V-2APM-3S to G4314 PREP you G5209 P-2AP .
14 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall not G3361 PRT-N receive G1209 V-ADS-3S you G5209 P-2AP , nor G3366 CONJ hear G191 V-AAS-3S your G3588 T-APM words G3056 N-APM , when ye depart G1831 V-PNP-NPM out of G3588 T-GSF that G3588 T-GSF house G3614 N-GSF or G2228 PRT city G4172 N-GSF , shake off G1621 V-AAM-2P the G3588 T-ASM dust G2868 N-ASM of G3588 T-GPM your G3588 T-GPM feet G4228 N-GPM .
15 Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , It shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S more tolerable G414 A-NSN-C for the land G1093 N-DSF of Sodom G4670 N-GPN and G2532 CONJ Gomorrah G1116 N-GPN in G1722 PREP the day G2250 N-DSF of judgment G2920 N-GSF , than G2228 PRT for G3588 T-DSF that G3588 T-DSF city G4172 N-DSF .
16 Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , I G1473 P-1NS send you forth V-PAI-1S as G5613 ADV sheep G4263 N-NPN in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN of wolves G3074 N-GPM : be G1096 V-PNM-2P ye therefore G3767 CONJ wise G5429 A-NPM as G5613 ADV serpents G3789 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ harmless G185 A-NPM as G5613 ADV doves G4058 N-NPF .
17 But G1161 CONJ beware G4337 V-PAM-2P of G3588 T-GPM men G444 N-GPM : for G1063 CONJ they will deliver you up G3860 V-FAI-3P to G1519 PREP the councils G4892 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ they will scourge G3146 V-FAI-3P you G5209 P-2AP in G1722 PREP their G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF ;
18 And G2532 CONJ ye shall be G1161 CONJ brought G71 V-FPI-2P before G1909 PREP governors G2232 N-APM and G2532 CONJ kings G935 N-APM for my sake G1752 ADV , for G1519 PREP a testimony G3142 N-ASN against them G846 P-DPM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-DPN Gentiles G1484 N-DPN .
19 But G1161 CONJ when G3752 CONJ they deliver you up G3860 V-PAS-3P , take no thought G3309 V-AAS-2P how G4459 ADV-I or G2228 PRT what G5101 I-ASN ye shall speak G2980 V-AAS-2P : for G1063 CONJ it shall be given G1325 V-FPI-3S you G5213 P-2DP in G1722 PREP that G3588 T-DSF same G3588 T-DSF hour G5610 N-DSF what G5101 I-ASN ye shall speak G2980 V-FAI-2P .
20 For G1063 CONJ it is G2075 V-PXI-2P not G3756 PRT-N ye G3588 T-NPM that speak G2980 V-PAP-NPM , but G235 CONJ the G3588 T-NSN Spirit G4151 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM your G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM which speaketh G2980 V-PAP-NSN in G1722 PREP you G5213 P-2DP .
21 And G1161 CONJ the brother G80 N-NSM shall deliver up G3860 V-FAI-3S the brother G80 N-ASM to G1519 PREP death G2288 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ the father G3962 N-NSM the child G5043 N-ASN : and G2532 CONJ the children G5043 N-NPN shall rise up G1881 V-FDI-3P against G1909 PREP their parents G1118 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ cause them to be put to death G2289 V-FAI-3P .
22 And G2532 CONJ ye shall be G2071 V-FXI-2P hated G3404 V-PPP-NPM of G5259 PREP all G3956 A-GPM men for G3588 T-NSM my G3588 T-NSM name\'s sake G1223 PREP : but G1161 CONJ he that endureth G5278 V-AAP-NSM to G1519 PREP the end G5056 N-ASN shall be G3778 D-NSM saved G4982 V-FPI-3S .
23 But G1161 CONJ when G3752 CONJ they persecute G1377 V-PAS-3P you G5209 P-2AP in G1722 PREP this G3588 T-DSF city G4172 N-DSF , flee G5343 V-PAM-2P ye G3588 T-ASF into G1519 PREP another G243 A-ASF : for G1063 CONJ verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Ye shall not G3364 have gone over G5055 V-AAS-2P the G3588 T-APF cities G4172 N-APF of Israel G2474 N-PRI , till G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM be come G2064 V-2AAS-3S .
24 The disciple G3101 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N above G5228 PREP his master G1320 N-ASM , nor G3761 ADV the servant G1401 N-NSM above G5228 PREP his G3588 T-ASM lord G2962 N-ASM .
25 It is enough G713 A-NSN for G3588 T-DSM the G3588 T-DSM disciple G3101 N-DSM that G2443 CONJ he be G1096 V-2ADS-3S as G5613 ADV his G3588 T-NSM master G1320 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM servant G1401 N-NSM as G5613 ADV his G3588 T-NSM lord G2962 N-NSM . If G1487 COND they have called G2564 V-AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASM master of the house G3617 N-ASM Beelzebub G954 N-PRI , how much G4214 Q-DSN more G3123 ADV shall they call them of his household G3615 A-APM ?
26 Fear G5399 V-AOM-2P them G846 P-APM not G3361 PRT-N therefore G3767 CONJ : for G1063 CONJ there is G2076 V-PXI-3S nothing G3762 A-NSN covered G2572 V-RPP-NSN , that G3739 R-NSN shall not G3756 PRT-N be revealed G601 V-FPI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ hid G2927 A-NSN , that G3739 R-NSN shall not G3756 PRT-N be known G1097 V-FPI-3S .
27 What G3739 R-ASN I tell G3004 V-PAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP in G1722 PREP darkness G4653 N-DSF , that speak G2036 V-2AAM-2P ye G3588 T-DSN in G1722 PREP light G5457 N-DSN : and G2532 CONJ what G3739 R-ASN ye hear G191 V-PAI-2P in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN ear G3775 N-ASN , that preach G2784 V-AAM-2P ye upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GPN housetops G1430 N-GPN .
28 And G2532 CONJ fear G5399 V-PNM-2P not G3361 PRT-N them which kill G615 V-PAP-GPM the G3588 T-ASN body G4983 N-ASN , but G1161 CONJ are not G3361 PRT-N able G1410 V-PNP-GPM to kill G615 V-AAN the G3588 T-ASN soul G5590 N-ASF : but G1161 CONJ rather G3123 ADV fear G5399 V-AOM-2P him which is able G1410 V-PNP-ASM to destroy G622 V-AAN both G2532 CONJ soul G5590 N-ASF and G2532 CONJ body G4983 N-ASN in G1722 PREP hell G1067 N-DSF .
29 Are not G3780 PRT-I two G1417 A-NUI sparrows G4765 N-NPN sold G4453 V-PPI-3S for a farthing G787 N-GSN ? and G2532 CONJ one G1520 A-NSN of G1537 PREP them G846 P-GPN shall not G3756 PRT-N fall G4098 V-FDI-3S on G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASF ground G1093 N-ASF without G427 PREP your G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM .
30 But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF very G2532 CONJ hairs G2359 N-NPF of G3588 T-GSF your G3588 T-GSF head G2776 N-GSF are G1526 V-PXI-3P all G3956 A-NPF numbered G705 V-RPP-NPF .
31 Fear G5399 V-AOM-2P ye not G3361 PRT-N therefore G3767 CONJ , ye G5210 P-2NP are of more value G1308 V-PAI-2P than many G4183 A-GPN sparrows G4765 N-GPN .
32 Whosoever G3956 A-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ shall confess G3670 V-FAI-3S me G1698 P-1DS before G1715 PREP men G444 N-GPM , him G846 P-DSM will I confess also G2504 P-1NS-C before G1715 PREP my G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM which G3588 T-GPM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
33 But G1161 CONJ whosoever G3748 R-NSM shall deny G720 V-ADS-3S me G3165 P-1AS before G1715 PREP men G444 N-GPM , him G846 P-ASM will I also G2504 P-1NS-C deny G720 V-FDI-1S before G1715 PREP my G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM which G3588 T-GSM is in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DPM .
34 Think G3543 V-AAS-2P not G3361 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ I am come G2064 V-2AAI-1S to send G906 V-2AAN peace G1515 N-ASF on G1909 PREP earth G1093 N-ASF : I came G2064 V-2AAI-1S not G3756 PRT-N to send G906 V-2AAN peace G1515 N-ASF , but G235 CONJ a sword G3162 N-ASF .
35 For G1063 CONJ I am come G2064 V-2AAI-1S to set a man at variance G1369 V-AAN against G2596 PREP his G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ the daughter G2364 N-ASF against G2596 PREP her G3588 T-GSF mother G3384 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ the daughter G3565 N-ASF - in - law against G2596 PREP her G3588 T-GSF mother G3994 N-GSF - in - law .
36 And G2532 CONJ a man G444 N-GSM \'s foes G2190 A-NPM shall be they of his own household G3615 A-NPM .
37 He that loveth G5368 V-PAP-NSM father G3962 N-ASM or G2228 PRT mother G3384 N-ASF more G5228 PREP than me G1691 P-1AS is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N worthy G514 A-NSM of me G3450 P-1GS : and G2532 CONJ he that loveth G5368 V-PAP-NSM son G5207 N-ASM or G2228 PRT daughter G2364 N-ASF more G5228 PREP than me G1691 P-1AS is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N worthy G514 A-NSM of me G3450 P-1GS .
38 And G2532 CONJ he G3739 R-NSM that taketh G2983 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N his G3588 T-ASM cross G4716 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ followeth G190 V-PAI-3S after G3694 ADV me G3450 P-1GS , is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N worthy G514 A-NSM of me G3450 P-1GS .
39 He that findeth G2147 V-2AAP-NSM his G3588 T-ASF life G5590 N-ASF shall lose G622 V-FAI-3S it G846 P-GSM : and G2532 CONJ he that loseth G622 V-AAP-NSM his G3588 T-ASF life G5590 N-ASF for my sake G1752 ADV shall find G2147 V-FAI-3S it G846 P-ASF .
40 He that receiveth G1209 V-PNP-NSM you G5209 P-2AP receiveth G1209 V-PNI-3S me G1691 P-1AS , and G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM that G3588 T-NSM receiveth G1209 V-PNP-NSM me G1691 P-1AS receiveth G1209 V-PNI-3S him that sent G649 V-AAP-ASM me G3165 P-1AS .
41 He that receiveth G1209 V-PNP-NSM a prophet G4396 N-ASM in G1519 PREP the name G3686 N-ASN of a prophet G4396 N-GSM shall receive G2983 V-FDI-3S a prophet G4396 N-GSM \'s reward G3408 N-ASM ; and G2532 CONJ he that receiveth G1209 V-PNP-NSM a righteous man G1342 A-ASM in G1519 PREP the name G3686 N-ASN of a righteous man G1342 A-GSM shall receive G2983 V-FDI-3S a righteous man G1342 A-GSM \'s reward G3408 N-ASM .
42 And G2532 CONJ whosoever G3739 R-NSM shall give to drink G4222 V-AAS-3S unto one G1520 A-ASM of G3588 T-GPM these G3588 T-GPM little ones G3398 A-GPM a cup G4221 N-ASN of cold G5593 A-GSN water only G3440 ADV in G1519 PREP the name G3686 N-ASN of a disciple G3101 N-GSM , verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , he shall in no wise G3364 lose G622 V-AAS-3S his G3588 T-ASM reward G3408 N-ASM .
