Acts 5:1 (NRSV) New Revised Standard Version

1 But a man named Ananias, with the consent of his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property;
2 with his wife's knowledge, he kept back some of the proceeds, and brought only a part and laid it at the apostles' feet.
3 "Ananias," Peter asked, "why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the proceeds of the land?
4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, were not the proceeds at your disposal? How is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You did not lie to us but to God!"
5 Now when Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard of it.
6 The young men came and wrapped up his body, then carried him out and buried him.
7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.
8 Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you and your husband sold the land for such and such a price." And she said, "Yes, that was the price."
9 Then Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to put the Spirit of the Lord to the test? Look, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."
10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and died. When the young men came in they found her dead, so they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.
11 And great fear seized the whole church and all who heard of these things.
12 Now many signs and wonders were done among the people through the apostles. And they were all together in Solomon's Portico.
13 None of the rest dared to join them, but the people held them in high esteem.
14 Yet more than ever believers were added to the Lord, great numbers of both men and women,
15 so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on cots and mats, in order that Peter's shadow might fall on some of them as he came by.
16 A great number of people would also gather from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing the sick and those tormented by unclean spirits, and they were all cured.
17 Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy,
18 arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.
19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors, brought them out, and said,
20 "Go, stand in the temple and tell the people the whole message about this life."
21 When they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and went on with their teaching. When the high priest and those with him arrived, they called together the council and the whole body of the elders of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought.
22 But when the temple police went there, they did not find them in the prison; so they returned and reported,
23 "We found the prison securely locked and the guards standing at the doors, but when we opened them, we found no one inside."
24 Now when the captain of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were perplexed about them, wondering what might be going on.
25 Then someone arrived and announced, "Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!"
26 Then the captain went with the temple police and brought them, but without violence, for they were afraid of being stoned by the people.
27 When they had brought them, they had them stand before the council. The high priest questioned them,
28 saying, "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name, yet here you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and you are determined to bring this man's blood on us."
29 But Peter and the apostles answered, "We must obey God rather than any human authority.
30 The God of our ancestors raised up Jesus, whom you had killed by hanging him on a tree.
31 God exalted him at his right hand as Leader and Savior that he might give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins.
32 And we are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey him."
33 When they heard this, they were enraged and wanted to kill them.
34 But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law, respected by all the people, stood up and ordered the men to be put outside for a short time.
35 Then he said to them, "Fellow Israelites, consider carefully what you propose to do to these men.
36 For some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a number of men, about four hundred, joined him; but he was killed, and all who followed him were dispersed and disappeared.
37 After him Judas the Galilean rose up at the time of the census and got people to follow him; he also perished, and all who followed him were scattered.
38 So in the present case, I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone; because if this plan or this undertaking is of human origin, it will fail;
39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them-- in that case you may even be found fighting against God!" They were convinced by him,
40 and when they had called in the apostles, they had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
41 As they left the council, they rejoiced that they were considered worthy to suffer dishonor for the sake of the name.
42 And every day in the temple and at home they did not cease to teach and proclaim Jesus as the Messiah.

3 But G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Ananias G367 N-VSM , why G1302 hath Satan G4567 N-NSM filled G4137 V-AAI-3S thine G3588 T-ASF heart G2588 N-ASF to lie G5574 V-ADN to the G3588 T-NSM Holy G40 Ghost G4151 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ to keep back G3557 V-AMN part of G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF price G5092 N-GSF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN land G5564 N-GSN ?

5 And G1161 CONJ Ananias G367 N-NSM hearing G191 V-PAP-NSM these G3588 T-APM words G3056 N-APM fell down G4098 V-2AAP-NSM , and gave up the ghost G1634 V-AAI-3S : and G2532 CONJ great G3173 A-NSM fear G5401 N-NSM came G1096 V-2ADI-3S on G1909 PREP all G3956 A-APM them that heard G191 V-PAP-APM these things G5023 D-APN .
6 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM young men G3501 A-NPM-C arose G450 V-2AAP-NPM , wound him up G4958 V-AAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ carried him out G1627 V-AAP-NPM , and buried G2290 V-AAI-3P him .
7 And G1161 CONJ it was G1096 V-2ADI-3S about G5613 ADV the space G1292 N-NSN of three G5140 A-GPF hours G5610 N-GPF after , when G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF wife G1135 N-NSF , not G3361 PRT-N knowing G1492 V-RAP-NSF what was done G1096 V-2RAP-ASN , came in G1525 V-2AAI-3S .
8 And G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Tell G2036 V-2AAM-2S me G3427 P-1DS whether G1487 COND ye sold G591 V-2AMI-2P the G3588 T-ASN land G5564 N-ASN for G3588 T-NSF so much G5118 D-GSN ? And G1161 CONJ she G3588 T-ASN said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Yea G3483 PRT , for so much G5118 D-GSN .

10 Then G1161 CONJ fell she down G4098 V-2AAI-3S straightway G3916 ADV at G3844 PREP his G3588 T-APM feet G4228 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ yielded up the ghost G1634 V-AAI-3S : and G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM young men G3495 N-NPM came in G1525 V-2AAP-NPM , and found G2147 V-2AAI-3P her G846 P-ASF dead G3498 A-ASF , and G2532 CONJ , carrying her forth G1627 V-AAP-NPM , buried G2290 V-AAI-3P her by G4314 PREP her G3588 T-ASM husband G435 N-ASM .
11 And G2532 CONJ great G3173 A-NSM fear G5401 N-NSM came G1096 V-2ADI-3S upon G1909 PREP all G3650 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF church G1577 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ upon G1909 PREP as many as G3956 A-APM heard G191 V-PAP-APM these things G5023 D-APN .
12 And G1161 CONJ by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GPF hands G5495 N-GPF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM apostles G652 N-GPM were many G4183 A-NPN signs G4592 N-NPN and G2532 CONJ wonders G5059 N-NPN wrought G1096 V-INI-3S among G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM people G2992 N-DSM ; ( CONJ and CONJ they were G2258 V-IXI-3P all G537 A-NPM with one accord G3661 ADV in G1722 PREP Solomon G4672 N-GSM \'s porch G4745 N-DSF .
13 And G1161 CONJ of the G3588 T-GPM rest G3062 A-GPM durst G5111 V-IAI-3S no man G3762 A-NSM join G2853 V-PPN himself to them G846 P-DPM : but G235 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM people G2992 N-NSM magnified G3170 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-APM .
14 And G1161 CONJ believers G4100 V-PAP-NPM were the more G3123 ADV added G4369 V-IPI-3P to the G3588 T-DSM Lord G2962 N-DSM , multitudes G4128 N-NPN both G5037 PRT of men G435 N-GPM and G2532 CONJ women G1135 N-GPF . )
15 Insomuch that G5620 CONJ they brought forth G1627 V-PAN the G3588 T-APM sick G772 A-APM into G2596 PREP the G3588 T-APF streets G4113 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ laid G5087 V-PAN them on G1909 PREP beds G2825 N-GPF and G2532 CONJ couches G2895 N-GPM , that G2443 CONJ at the least G2579 COND-C the G3588 T-NSF shadow G4639 N-NSF of Peter G4074 N-GSM passing by G2064 V-PNP-GSM might overshadow G1982 V-AAS-3S some G5100 X-DSM of them G846 P-GPM .
16 There came G4905 V-INI-3S also G2532 CONJ a multitude G4128 N-NSN out of the G3588 T-NSN cities G4172 N-GPF round about G4038 ADV unto G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , bringing G5342 V-PAP-NPM sick folks G772 A-APM , and G2532 CONJ them which were vexed G3791 V-PPP-APM with G5259 PREP unclean G169 A-GPN spirits G4151 N-GPN : and they G3748 R-NPM were healed G2323 V-IPI-3P every one G537 A-NPM .

21 And G1161 CONJ when they heard G191 V-AAP-NPM that , they entered G1525 V-2AAI-3P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN temple G2411 N-ASN early in the morning G5259 PREP , and G2532 CONJ taught G1321 V-IAI-3P . 23 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , The G3588 T-ASN prison G1201 N-ASN truly G3303 PRT found G2147 V-2AAI-1P we shut G2808 V-RPP-ASN with G1722 PREP all G3956 A-DSF safety G803 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM keepers G5441 N-APM standing G2476 V-RAP-APM without G1854 before G4253 PREP the G3588 T-GPF doors G2374 N-GPF : but G1161 CONJ when we had opened G455 V-AAP-NPM , we found G2147 V-2AAI-1P no man G3762 A-ASM within G2080 ADV .
24 Now G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV the PRT high priest G2409 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM captain G4755 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN temple G2411 N-GSN and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM heard G191 V-AAI-3P these G3588 T-APM things G3056 N-APM , they doubted G1280 V-IAI-3P of G4012 PREP them G846 P-GPM whereunto G5101 I-NSN this G5124 D-NSN would grow G1096 V-2ADO-3S .
25 Then G1161 CONJ came G3854 V-2ADP-NSM one G5100 X-NSM and told G518 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-DPM , saying G3004 , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , the G3588 T-NPM men G435 N-NPM whom G3739 R-APM ye put G5087 V-2AMI-2P in G1722 PREP prison G5438 N-DSF are G1526 V-PXI-3P standing G2476 V-RAP-NPM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ teaching G1321 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM .
26 Then G5119 ADV went G565 V-2AAP-NSM the G3588 T-NSM captain G4755 N-NSM with G4862 PREP the G3588 T-DPM officers G5257 N-DPM , and brought G71 V-2AAI-3S them G846 P-APM without G3326 PREP violence G970 N-GSF : for G1063 CONJ they feared G5399 V-INI-3P the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM , lest G3363 they should have been stoned G3034 V-APS-3P .
27 And G1161 CONJ when they had brought G71 V-2AAP-NPM them G846 P-APM , they set G2476 V-2AAI-3P them before G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN council G4892 N-DSN : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM high priest G749 N-NSM asked G1905 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-APM ,
28 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Did not G3756 PRT-N we straitly command G3853 V-AAI-1P you G5213 P-2DP that ye should not G3361 PRT-N teach G1321 V-PAN in G1909 PREP this G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN ? and G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , ye G3588 T-ASF have filled G4137 V-RAI-2P Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI with your G3588 T-GSF doctrine G1322 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ intend G1014 V-PNI-2P to bring G1863 V-2AAN this G3588 T-GSM man G444 N-GSM \'s blood G129 N-ASN upon G1909 PREP us G2248 P-1AP .
29 Then G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM other apostles G652 N-NPM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , We ought G1163 V-PQI-3S to obey G3980 V-PAN God G2316 N-DSM rather G3123 ADV than G2228 PRT men G444 N-DPM .
30 The G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM our G3588 T-GPM fathers G3962 N-GPM raised up G1453 V-AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-ASM , whom G3739 R-ASM ye G5210 P-2NP slew G1315 V-AMI-2P and hanged G2910 V-AAP-NPM on G1909 PREP a tree G3586 N-GSN .
31 Him G3588 T-NSM hath God G2316 N-NSM exalted G5312 V-AAI-3S with his G3588 T-DSF right hand G1188 A-DSF to be a Prince G747 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ a Savior G4990 N-ASM , for to give G1325 V-2AAN repentance G3341 N-ASF to Israel G2474 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ forgiveness G859 N-ASF of sins G266 N-GPF .
32 And G2532 CONJ we G2249 P-1NP are G2070 V-PXI-1P his G846 P-GSM witnesses G3144 N-NPM of G3588 T-GPN these G3588 T-GPN things G4487 N-GPN ; and G2532 CONJ so is also G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-ASN Holy G40 A-ASN Ghost G4151 N-ASN , whom G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM hath given G1325 V-AAI-3S to them that obey G3980 V-PAP-DPM him G846 P-DSM .
33 When G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM heard G191 V-PAP-NPM that , they were cut G1282 V-IPI-3P to the heart , and G2532 CONJ took counsel G1011 V-INI-3P to slay G337 V-2AAN them G846 P-APM .
34 Then G1161 CONJ stood there up G450 V-2AAP-NSM one G5100 X-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN council G4892 N-DSN , a Pharisee G5330 N-NSM , named G3686 N-DSN Gamaliel G1059 N-PRI , a doctor of the law G3547 N-NSM , had in reputation G5093 A-NSM among all G3956 A-DSM the G3588 T-DSM people G2992 N-DSM , and commanded G2753 V-AAI-3S to put G4160 V-AAN the G3588 T-APM apostles G652 N-APM forth G1854 ADV a little space G1024 A-ASN ;
35 And G5037 PRT said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Ye men G435 N-VPM of Israel G2475 N-VPM , take heed G4337 V-PAM-2P to yourselves G1438 F-3DPM what G5101 I-ASN ye intend G3195 V-PAI-2P to do G4238 V-PAN as touching G1909 PREP these G3588 T-DPM men G444 N-DPM .
36 For G1063 CONJ before G4253 PREP these G3588 T-GPF days G2250 N-GPF rose up G450 V-2AAI-3S Theudas G2333 N-NSM , boasting G3004 V-PAP-NSM himself G1438 F-3ASM to be G1511 V-PXN somebody G5100 X-ASM ; to whom G3739 R-DSM a number G706 N-NSM of men G435 N-GPM , about G5616 ADV four hundred G5071 A-GPN , joined G4347 V-API-3S themselves : who G3739 R-NSM was slain G337 V-API-3S ; and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM , as many as G3745 K-NPM obeyed G3982 V-IPI-3P him G846 P-DSM , were scattered G1262 V-API-3P , and G2532 CONJ brought G1096 V-2ADI-3P to G1519 PREP naught G3762 A-ASN .
37 After G3326 PREP this man G5126 D-ASM rose up G450 V-2AAI-3S Judas G2455 N-NSM of Galilee G1057 N-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF taxing G582 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ drew away G868 V-AAI-3S much G2425 A-ASM people G2992 N-ASM after G3694 ADV him G848 : he also G2548 D-NSM-C perished G622 V-2AMI-3S ; and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM , even as many as G3745 K-NPM obeyed G3982 V-IPI-3P him G846 P-GSM , were dispersed G1287 V-API-3P .
38 And G2532 CONJ now G3569 I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Refrain G868 V-2AAM-2P from G575 PREP these G3588 T-GPM men G444 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ let them alone G1439 V-AAM-2P : for G3754 CONJ if G1437 COND this G3588 T-NSF counsel G1012 N-NSF or G2228 PRT this G3588 T-NSN work G2041 N-NSN be G5600 V-PXS-3S of G1537 PREP men G444 N-GPM , it will come to nought G2647 V-FPI-3S :
39 But G1161 CONJ if G1487 COND it be G2076 V-PXI-3S of G1537 PREP God G2316 N-GSM , ye cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P overthrow G2647 V-AAN it G846 P-ASN ; lest haply G3379 ADV ye be found G2147 V-APS-2P even G2532 CONJ to fight against God G2314 A-NPM .
40 And G1161 CONJ to him G846 P-DSM they agreed G3982 V-API-3P : and G2532 CONJ when they had called G4341 V-ADP-NPM the G3588 T-APM apostles G652 N-APM , and beaten G1194 V-AAP-NPM them , they commanded G3853 V-AAI-3P that they should not G3361 PRT-N speak G2980 V-PAN in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN of Jesus G2424 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ let them go G630 V-AAI-3P .
41 And CONJ they G3588 T-NPM departed G4198 V-INI-3P from G575 PREP the presence G4383 N-GSN of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN council G4892 N-GSN , rejoicing G5463 V-PAP-NPM that G3754 CONJ they were counted worthy G2661 V-API-3P to suffer shame G818 V-APN for G5228 PREP his G3588 T-GSN name G3686 N-GSN .
42 And G5037 PRT daily G3956 A-ASF in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ in every house G2596 PREP , they ceased G3973 V-IMI-3P not G3756 PRT-N to teach G1321 V-PAP-NPM and G2532 CONJ preach G2097 V-PMP-NPM Jesus G2424 N-ASM Christ G5547 N-ASM .
