2 Chronicles 25:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 Amaziah was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother, named Jehoaddan, was from Jerusalem.
2 He did what was pleasing in the sight of the LORD, though not wholeheartedly.
3 After he had strengthened his hold on the kingdom, he slew those of his servants who had killed the king, his father;
4 but he did not put their children to death, for he acted according to what is written in the law, in the Book of Moses, as the LORD commanded: "Fathers shall not be put to death for their children, nor children for their fathers; but only for his own guilt shall a man be put to death."
5 Amaziah mustered Judah and placed them, out of all Judah and Benjamin according to their ancestral houses, under leaders of thousands and of hundreds. When he had counted those of twenty years and over, he found them to be three hundred thousand picked men fit for war, capable of handling lance and shield.
6 He also hired a hundred thousand valiant warriors from Israel for a hundred talents of silver.
7 But a man of God came to him and said: "O king, let not the army of Israel go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel, with any Ephraimite.
8 Instead, go on your own, strongly prepared for the conflict; otherwise the LORD will defeat you in the face of the enemy. It is God who has the power to reinforce or to defeat."
9 Amaziah answered the man of God, "But what is to be done about the hundred talents that I paid for the troops of Israel?" The man of God replied, "The LORD can give you much more than that."
10 Amaziah then disbanded the troops that had come to him from Ephraim, and sent them home. They, however, became furiously angry with Judah, and returned home blazing with resentment.
11 Amaziah now assumed command of his army. They proceeded to the Valley of Salt, and there they killed ten thousand men of Seir.
12 The Judahites also brought back another ten thousand alive, whom they led to the summit of the Rock and then cast down, so that they were all crushed.
13 Meanwhile, the mercenaries whom Amaziah had dismissed from battle service with him raided the cities of Judah from Samaria to Beth-horon. They killed three thousand of the inhabitants and took away much booty.
14 When Amaziah returned from his conquest of the Edomites he brought back with him the gods of the people of Seir, which he set up as his own gods; he bowed down before them and offered sacrifice to them.
15 Then the anger of the LORD blazed out against Amaziah, and he sent a prophet to him who said: "Why have you had recourse to this people's gods that could not save their own people from your hand?"
16 While he was still speaking, however, the king said to him: "Have you been made the king's counselor? Be silent! Why should it be necessary to kill you?" Therefore the prophet desisted. "I know, however," he said, "that God has let you take counsel to your own destruction, because you have done this thing and have refused to hear my counsel."
17 Having taken counsel, King Amaziah of Judah sent messengers to Joash, son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, the king of Israel, saying, "Come, let us meet each other face to face."
18 King Joash of Israel sent this reply to King Amaziah of Judah: "The thistle of the Lebanon sent a message to the cedar of the Lebanon, saying, 'Give your daughter to my son for his wife.' But the wild beasts of the Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle down.
19 You are thinking, 'See, I have beaten Edom!', and thus ambition makes you proud. Remain at home. Why involve yourself, and Judah with you, in misfortune and failure?"
20 But Amaziah would not listen, for God had determined to hand them over because they had had recourse to the gods of Edom.
21 Therefore King Joash of Israel advanced and he and King Amaziah met in battle at Beth-shemesh of Judah.
22 There Judah was defeated by Israel, and all the Judean soldiers fled homeward.
23 King Joash of Israel captured Amaziah, king of Judah, son of Joash, son of Jehoahaz, at Beth-shemesh and brought him to Jerusalem. Then he tore down the wall of Jerusalem from the Ephraim Gate to the Corner Gate, a distance of four hundred cubits.
24 He took away all the gold and silver and all the vessels he found in the house of God with Obed-edom, together with the treasures of the palace, and hostages as well. Then he returned to Samaria.
25 Amaziah, son of Joash, king of Judah, survived Joash, son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, by fifteen years.
26 The rest of the acts of Amaziah, first and last, can be found written, as is well known, in the book of the kings of Judah and Israel.
27 Now from the time that Amaziah ceased to follow the LORD, a conspiracy was formed against him in Jerusalem; hence he fled to Lachish. But they pursued him to Lachish and put him to death there.
28 They brought him back on horses and buried him with his ancestors in the City of Judah.

3 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when H834 K-RPRO the kingdom H4467 was established H2388 to H5921 PREP-3MS him , that he slew H2026 his servants H5650 that had killed H5221 the king H4428 D-NMS his father H1 .
4 But he slew H4191 not H3808 NADV their children H1121 , but H3588 CONJ did as it is written H3789 in the law H8451 in the book H5612 of Moses H4872 , where H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The fathers H1 shall not H3808 NADV die H4191 VQY3MP for H5921 PREP the children H1121 NMP , neither H3808 NADV shall the children H1121 die H4191 VQY3MP for H5921 PREP the fathers H1 , but H3588 CONJ every man H376 NMS shall die H4191 for his own sin H2399 .
5 Moreover Amaziah H558 gathered Judah together H6908 , and made H5975 them captains H8269 over thousands H505 , and captains H8269 over hundreds H3967 , according to the houses H1004 of their fathers H1 , throughout all H3605 L-CMS Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 : and he numbered H6485 them from twenty H6242 years H8141 NFS old H1121 and above H4605 , and found H4672 them three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP thousand H505 W-BMS choice H977 men , able to go forth H3318 to war H6635 NMS , that could handle H270 spear H7420 and shield H6793 .
6 He hired H7936 also a hundred H3967 MFS thousand H505 W-BMS mighty men H1368 AMS of valor H2428 out of Israel H3478 for a hundred H3967 talents H3603 of silver H3701 NMS .
7 But there came H935 VQPMS a man H376 W-NMS of God H430 D-EDP to H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , O king H4428 D-NMS , let not H408 NPAR the army H6635 of Israel H3478 go H935 VQY3MS with H5973 PREP-2MS thee ; for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS is not H369 NPAR with H5973 PREP Israel H3478 , to wit , with all H3605 NMS the children H1121 of Ephraim H669 .
8 But H3588 CONJ if H518 PART thou H859 PPRO-2MS wilt go H935 , do H6213 VQI2MS it , be strong H2388 for the battle H4421 : God H430 D-NAME-4MP shall make thee fall H3782 before H6440 L-CMP the enemy H341 VQPMS : for H3588 CONJ God H430 hath H3426 ADV power H3581 CMS to help H5826 , and to cast down H3782 .
9 And Amaziah H558 said H559 W-VQY3MS to the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , But what H4100 shall we do H6213 for the hundred H3967 talents H3603 D-NFS which H834 RPRO I have given H5414 VQQ1MS to the army H1416 of Israel H3478 ? And the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP answered H559 W-VQY3MS , The LORD H3068 L-EDS is H3426 PART able to give H5414 thee much more H7235 VHFA than this H2088 .
10 Then Amaziah H558 separated H914 them , to wit , the army H1416 that H834 RPRO was come H935 VQPMS to H413 PREP-3MS him out of Ephraim H669 , to go H1980 L-VQFC home H4725 again : wherefore their anger H639 was greatly H3966 ADV kindled H2734 W-VQY3MS against Judah H3063 , and they returned H7725 home H4725 in great H2750 anger H639 NMS .
11 And Amaziah H558 strengthened himself H2388 , and led forth his people H5971 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS to the valley H1516 of salt H4417 , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MS of the children H1121 of Seir H8165 LFS ten H6235 thousand H505 .
12 And other ten H6235 thousand H505 MMP left alive H2416 NMP did the children H1121 of Judah H3063 carry away captive H7617 , and brought H935 them unto the top H7218 of the rock H5553 , and cast them down H7993 from the top H7218 of the rock H5553 , that they all H3605 were broken in pieces H1234 .
13 But the soldiers H1121 W-CMP of the army H1416 which H834 RPRO Amaziah H558 sent back H7725 VHQ3MS , that they should not go H1980 with H5973 PREP-3MS him to battle H4421 , fell upon H6584 W-VQY3MP the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 , from Samaria H8111 even unto H5704 W-PREP Beth H1032 - horon , and smote H5221 W-VHY3MP three H7969 BMS thousand H505 MMP of H4480 them , and took H962 much H7227 AFS spoil H961 .
14 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , after that H310 PREP Amaziah H558 was come H935 from the slaughter H5221 of the Edomites H130 , that he brought H935 W-VHY3MS the gods H430 CDP of the children H1121 of Seir H8165 LFS , and set them up H5975 to be his gods H430 , and bowed down himself H7812 before H6440 them , and burned incense H6999 unto them .
15 Wherefore the anger H639 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was kindled H2734 against Amaziah H558 , and he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him a prophet H5030 , which said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Why H4100 L-IPRO hast thou sought after H1875 the gods H430 CDP of the people H5971 , which H834 RPRO could not H3808 NADV deliver H5337 their own people H5971 out of thine hand H3027 GFS-2MS ?
16 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as he talked H1696 with H413 PREP-3MS him , that the king said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Art thou made H5414 of the king H4428 \'s counsel H3289 ? forbear H2308 VQI2MS ; why H4100 L-IPRO shouldest thou be smitten H5221 ? Then the prophet H5030 forbore H2308 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , I know H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ God H430 EDP hath determined H3289 to destroy H7843 thee , because H3588 CONJ thou hast done H6213 VQQ2MS this H2063 DPRO-3FS , and hast not H3808 W-NPAR hearkened H8085 VQQ2MS unto my counsel H6098 .
17 Then Amaziah H558 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 took advice H3289 , and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Joash H3101 , the son H1121 of Jehoahaz H3059 , the son H1121 of Jehu H3058 , king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Come H1980 , let us see one another H7200 in the face H6440 .
18 And Joash H3101 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Amaziah H558 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The thistle H2336 that H834 RPRO was in Lebanon H3844 sent H7971 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP the cedar H730 that H834 RPRO was in Lebanon H3844 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Give H5414 thy daughter H1323 to my son H1121 to wife H802 L-NFS : and there passed by H5674 a wild H7704 D-NMS beast H2416 CFS that H834 RPRO was in Lebanon H3844 , and trod down H7429 the thistle H2336 .
19 Thou sayest H559 VQQ2MS , Lo H2009 IJEC , thou hast smitten H5221 the Edomites H123 ; and thine heart H3820 CMS-2MS lifteth thee up H5375 to boast H3513 : abide H3427 now H6258 ADV at home H1004 ; why H4100 L-IPRO shouldest thou meddle H1624 to thine hurt H7451 , that thou shouldest fall H5307 , even thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and Judah H3063 with H5973 PREP-2FS thee ?
20 But Amaziah H558 would not H3808 W-NPAR hear H8085 ; for H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3FS came of God H430 , that H4616 L-CONJ he might deliver H5414 them into the hand H3027 of their enemies , because H3588 CONJ they sought after H1875 the gods H430 CDP of Edom H123 .
21 So Joash H3101 the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 went up H5927 W-VHY3MS ; and they saw one another H7200 in the face H6440 NMP , both he H1931 PPRO-3MS and Amaziah H558 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , at Beth H1053 - shemesh , which H834 RPRO belongeth to Judah H3063 .
22 And Judah H3063 was put to the worse H5062 before H6440 L-CMP Israel H3478 , and they fled H5127 W-VQY3MP every man H376 NMS to his tent H168 .
23 And Joash H3101 the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 took H8610 Amaziah H558 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , the son H1121 of Joash H3101 , the son H1121 of Jehoahaz H3059 , at Beth H1053 - shemesh , and brought H935 him to Jerusalem H3389 , and broke down H6555 the wall H2346 of Jerusalem H3389 from the gate H8179 of Ephraim H669 to H5704 PREP the corner H6438 gate H8179 NMS , four H702 MFS hundred H3967 BFP cubits H520 .
24 And he took all H3605 NMS the gold H2091 and the silver H3701 , and all H3605 NMS the vessels H3627 D-NMP that were found H4672 in the house H1004 B-CMS of God H430 D-EDP with H5973 PREP Obed H5654 - edom , and the treasures H214 CMP of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS , the hostages H1121 also , and returned H7725 to Samaria H8111 .
25 And Amaziah H558 the son H1121 CMS of Joash H3101 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 lived H2421 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP the death H4194 of Joash H3101 son H1121 CMS of Jehoahaz H3059 king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 fifteen H2568 BFS years H8141 NFS .
26 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Amaziah H558 , first H7223 and last H314 , behold H2009 , are they not H3808 I-NADV written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 and Israel H3478 ?
27 Now after the time H6256 that H834 RPRO Amaziah H558 did turn away H5493 from following H310 the LORD H3068 EDS they made H7194 a conspiracy H7195 against H5921 PREP-3MS him in Jerusalem H3389 ; and he fled H5127 to Lachish H3923 : but they sent H7971 to Lachish H3923 after H310 PREP-3MS him , and slew H4191 him there H8033 ADV .
28 And they brought H5375 him upon H5921 PREP horses H5483 , and buried H6912 him with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 in the city H5892 of Judah H3063 .
