Ezra 10:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 While Ezra prayed and acknowledged their guilt, weeping and prostrate before the house of God, a very large assembly of Israelites gathered about him, men, women, and children; and the people wept profusely.
2 Then Shecaniah, the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, made this appeal to Ezra: "We have indeed betrayed our God by taking as wives foreign women of the peoples of the land. Yet even now there remains a hope for Israel.
3 Let us therefore enter into a covenant before our God to dismiss all our foreign wives and the children born of them, in keeping with what you, my lord, advise, and those who fear the commandments of our God. Let the law be observed!
4 Rise, then, for this is your duty! We will stand by you, so have courage and take action!"
5 Ezra rose to his feet and demanded an oath from the chiefs of the priests, from the Levites and from all Israel that they would do as had been proposed; and they swore it.
6 Then Ezra retired from his place before the house of God and entered the chamber of Johanan, son of Eliashib, where he spent the night neither eating food nor drinking water, for he was in mourning over the betrayal by the exiles.
7 A proclamation was made throughout Judah and Jerusalem that all the exiles should gather together in Jerusalem,
8 and that whoever failed to appear within three days would, according to the judgment of the leaders and elders, suffer the confiscation of all his possessions, and himself be excluded from the assembly of the exiles.
9 All the men of Judah and Benjamin gathered together in Jerusalem within the three-day period: it was in the ninth month, on the twentieth day of the month. All the people, standing in the open place before the house of God, were trembling both over the matter at hand and because it was raining.
10 Then Ezra, the priest, stood up and said to them: "Your unfaithfulness in taking foreign women as wives has added to Israel's guilt.
11 But now, give praise to the LORD, the God of your fathers, and do his will: separate yourselves from the peoples of the land and from these foreign women."
12 In answer, the whole assembly cried out with a loud voice: "Yes, it is our duty to do as you say!
13 But the people are numerous and it is the rainy season, so that we cannot remain out-of-doors; besides, this is not a task that can be performed in a single day or even two, for those of us who have sinned in this regard are many.
14 Let our leaders represent the whole assembly; then let all those in our cities who have taken foreign women for wives appear at appointed times, accompanied by the elders and magistrates of each city in question, till we have turned away from us our God's burning anger over this affair."
15 Only Jonathan, son of Asahel, and Jahzeiah, son of Tikvah, were against this proposal, with Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supporting them.
16 The exiles did as agreed. Ezra appointed as his assistants men who were family heads, one for each family, all of them designated by name. They held sessions to examine the matter, beginning with the first day of the tenth month.
17 By the first day of the first month they had passed judgment on all the men who had taken foreign women for wives.
18 Among the priests, the following were found to have taken foreign women for wives: Of the sons of Jeshua, son of Jozadak, and his brethren: Maaseiah, Eliezer, Jarib, and Gedaliah.
19 They pledged themselves to dismiss their wives, and as a guilt-offering for their guilt they gave a ram from the flock.
20 Of the sons of Immer: Hanani and Zebadiah;
21 of the sons of Harim: Maaseiah, Elijah, Shemaiah, Jehiel, and Uzziah;
22 of the sons of Pashhur: Elioenai, Maaseiah, Ishmael, Nethanel, Jozabad, and Elasah.
23 Of the Levites: Jozabad, Shimei, Kelaiah (also called Kelita), Pethahiah, Judah and Eliezer.
24 Of the singers: Eliashib and Zakkur; of the gatekeepers: Shallum, Telem, and Uri.
25 Among the other Israelites: Of the sons of Parosh: Ramiah, Izziah, Malchijah, Mijamin, Eleazar, Malchijah, and Benaiah;
26 of the sons of Elam: Mattaniah, Zechariah, Jehiel, Abdi, Jeremoth, and Elijah;
27 of the sons of Zattu: Elioenai, Eliashib, Mattaniah, Jeremoth, Zabad, and Aziza;
28 of the sons of Bebai: Jehohanan, Hananiah, Zabbai, and Athlai;
29 of the sons of Bani: Meshullam, Malluch, Adaiah, Jashub, Sheal, and Jeremoth;
30 of the sons of Pahath-moab: Adna, Chelal, Benaiah, Maaseiah, Mattaniah, Bezalel, Binnui, and Manasseh;
31 of the sons of Harim: Eliezer, Isshijah, Malchijah, Shemaiah, Shimeon,
32 Benjamin, Malluch, Shemariah;
33 of the sons of Hashum: Mattenai, Mattattah, Zabad, Eliphelet, Jeremai, Manasseh, Shimei;
34 of the sons of Begui: Maadai, Amram, Uel,
35 Benaiah, Bedeiah, Cheluhi,
36 Vaniah, Meremoth, Eliashib,
37 Mattaniah, Mattenai, and Jaasu;
38 of the sons of Binnui: Shimei,
39 Shelemiah, Nathan, and Adaiah;
40 of the sons of Zachai: Shashai, Sharai,
41 Azarel, Shelemiah, Shemariah,
42 Shallum, Amariah, Joseph;
43 of the sons of Nebo: Jeiel, Mattithiah, Zabad, Zebina, Jaddai, Joel, Benaiah.
44 All these had taken foreign wives; but they sent them away, both the women and their children.

2 And Shechaniah H7935 the son H1121 CMS of Jehiel H3171 , one of the sons H1121 of Elam H5867 , answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Ezra H5830 , We H587 PPRO-1MP have trespassed H4603 against our God H430 , and have taken H3427 strange H5237 wives H802 GFP of the people H5971 of the land H776 D-GFS : yet now H6258 W-ADV there is H3426 PART hope H4723 in Israel H3478 concerning H5921 PREP this H2063 thing .
3 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore let us make H3772 a covenant H1285 NFS with our God H430 to put away H3318 all H3605 CMS the wives H802 GFP , and such as are born H3205 of H4480 them , according to the counsel H6098 B-CFS of my lord H136 , and of those that tremble H2730 at the commandment H4687 of our God H430 ; and let it be done H6213 according to the law H8451 .
4 Arise H6965 VQI2MS ; for H3588 CONJ this matter H1697 D-NMS belongeth unto H5921 PREP-2MS thee : we H587 also will be with H5973 PREP-2FS thee : be of good courage H2388 , and do H6213 it .
5 Then arose H6965 W-VQY3MS Ezra H5830 , and made the chief H8269 CMP priests H3548 , the Levites H3881 , and all H3605 W-CMS Israel H3478 , to swear H7650 that they should do H6213 L-VQFC according to this H2088 D-PMS word H1697 . And they swore H7650 .
6 Then Ezra H5830 rose up H6965 W-VQY3MS from before H6440 ML-CMP the house H1004 CMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS into H413 PREP the chamber H3957 of Johanan H3076 the son H1121 of Eliashib H475 : and when he came H1980 W-VQY3MS thither H8033 ADV , he did eat H398 VQQ3MS no H3808 ADV bread H3899 NMS , nor H3808 ADV drink H8354 water H4325 W-NMD : for H3588 CONJ he mourned H56 because H5921 PREP of the transgression H4604 of them that had been carried away H1473 .
7 And they made proclamation H5674 throughout Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 unto all H3605 the children H1121 of the captivity H1473 , that they should gather themselves together H6908 unto Jerusalem H3389 ;
8 And that whosoever H3605 NMS would not H3808 ADV come H935 VQY3MS within three H7969 L-BMS days H3117 D-NMP , according to the counsel H6098 of the princes H8269 and the elders H2205 , all H3605 NMS his substance H7399 should be forfeited H2763 , and himself H1931 W-PPRO-3MS separated H914 from the congregation H6951 of those that had been carried away H1473 .
9 Then all H3605 CMS the men H376 of Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 gathered themselves together H6908 unto Jerusalem H3389 within three H7969 L-BMS days H3117 D-NMP . It H1931 PPRO-3MS was the ninth H8671 month H2320 , on the twentieth H6242 day of the month H2320 BD-NMS ; and all H3605 CMS the people H5971 sat H3427 W-VQY3MP in the street H7339 of the house H1004 CMS of God H430 D-EDP , trembling H7460 because H5921 PREP of this matter H1697 D-NMS , and for the great rain H1653 .
10 And Ezra H5830 the priest H3548 stood up H6965 W-VQY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS have transgressed H4603 , and have taken H3427 strange H5237 wives H802 GFP , to increase H3254 the trespass H819 of Israel H3478 LMS .
11 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore make H5414 confession H8426 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS God H430 of your fathers H1 , and do H6213 his pleasure H7522 : and separate yourselves H914 from the people H5971 of the land H776 D-GFS , and from H4480 W-PREP the strange H5237 wives H802 D-NFP .
12 Then all H3605 the congregation H6951 answered H6030 and said H559 W-VQY3MP with a loud H1419 AMS voice H6963 CMS , As thou hast said H1697 , so H3651 ADV must we do H6213 .
13 But H61 the people H5971 are many H7227 AMS , and it is a time H6256 of much rain H1653 , and we are not H369 W-NPAR able H3581 CMS to stand H5975 without H2351 BD-NMS , neither H3808 ADV is this a work H4399 of one H259 MMS day H3117 L-NMS or H3808 W-NADV two H8147 : for H3588 CONJ we are many H7235 that have transgressed H6586 in this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 .
14 Let now H4994 IJEC our rulers H8269 of all H3605 the congregation H6951 stand H5975 , and let all H3605 W-CMS them which H834 RPRO have taken H3427 strange H5237 wives H802 GFP in our cities H5892 come H935 VQY3MS at appointed H2163 times H6256 , and with H5973 them the elders H2205 of every city H5892 GFS , and the judges H8199 thereof , until H5704 PREP the fierce H2740 CMS wrath H639 CMS of our God H430 for H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS matter H1697 be turned H7725 L-VHFC from H4480 M-PREP-3MS us .
15 Only H389 ADV Jonathan H3083 the son H1121 CMS of Asahel H6214 and Jahaziah H3167 the son H1121 CMS of Tikvah H8616 were employed H5975 VQQ3MP about H5921 PREP this H2063 DPRO matter : and Meshullam H4918 and Shabbethai H7678 the Levite H3881 helped H5826 them .
16 And the children H1121 of the captivity H1473 did H6213 so H3651 ADV . And Ezra H5830 the priest H3548 , with certain H376 NMP chief H7218 CMP of the fathers H1 , after the house H1004 of their fathers H1 , and all H3605 of them by their names H8034 , were separated H914 , and sat down H3427 W-VQY3MP in the first H259 MMS day H3117 B-NMS of the tenth H6224 month H2320 LD-NMS to examine H1875 the matter H1697 .
17 And they made an end H3615 with all H3605 the men H376 NMP that had taken H3427 strange H5237 wives H802 GFP by H5704 PREP the first H259 MMS day H3117 NMS of the first H7223 month H2320 LD-NMS .
18 And among the sons H1121 of the priests H3548 there were found H4672 that H834 RPRO had taken H3427 strange H5237 wives H802 GFP : namely , of the sons H1121 of Jeshua H3442 the son H1121 of Jozadak H3136 , and his brethren H251 ; Maaseiah H4641 , and Eliezer H461 , and Jarib H3402 , and Gedaliah H1436 .
19 And they gave H5414 W-VQY3MP their hands H3027 that they would put away H3318 their wives H802 ; and being guilty H818 , they offered a ram H352 of the flock H6629 NMS for H5921 PREP their trespass H819 .
