Genesis 27:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 When Isaac was so old that his eyesight had failed him, he called his older son Esau and said to him, "Son!" "Yes, father!" he replied.
2 Isaac then said, "As you can see, I am so old that I may now die at any time.
3 Take your gear, therefore-- your quiver and bow-- and go out into the country to hunt some game for me.
4 With your catch prepare an appetizing dish for me, such as I like, and bring it to me to eat, so that I may give you my special blessing before I die."
5 Rebekah had been listening while Isaac was speaking to his son Esau. So when Esau went out into the country to hunt some game for his father,
6 Rebekah said to her son Jacob, "Listen! I overheard your father tell your brother Esau,
7 'Bring me some game and with it prepare an appetizing dish for me to eat, that I may give you my blessing with the LORD'S approval before I die.'
8 Now, son, listen carefully to what I tell you.
9 Go to the flock and get me two choice kids. With these I will prepare an appetizing dish for your father, such as he likes.
10 Then bring it to your father to eat, that he may bless you before he dies."
11 "But my brother Esau is a hairy man," said Jacob to his mother Rebekah, "and I am smooth-skinned!
12 Suppose my father feels me? He will think I am making sport of him, and I shall bring on myself a curse instead of a blessing."
13 His mother, however, replied: "Let any curse against you, son, fall on me! Just do as I say. Go and get me the kids."
14 So Jacob went and got them and brought them to his mother; and with them she prepared an appetizing dish, such as his father liked.
15 Rebekah then took the best clothes of her older son Esau that she had in the house, and gave them to her younger son Jacob to wear;
16 and with the skins of the kids she covered up his hands and the hairless parts of his neck.
17 Then she handed her son Jacob the appetizing dish and the bread she had prepared.
18 Bringing them to his father, Jacob said, "Father!" "Yes?" replied Isaac. "Which of my sons are you?"
19 Jacob answered his father: "I am Esau, your first-born. I did as you told me. Please sit up and eat some of my game, so that you may give me your special blessing."
20 But Isaac asked, "How did you succeed so quickly, son?" He answered, "The LORD, your God, let things turn out well with me."
21 Isaac then said to Jacob, "Come closer, son, that I may feel you, to learn whether you really are my son Esau or not."
22 So Jacob moved up closer to his father. When Isaac felt him, he said, "Although the voice is Jacob's, the hands are Esau's."
23 (He failed to identify him because his hands were hairy, like those of his brother Esau; so in the end he gave him his blessing.)
24 Again he asked him, "Are you really my son Esau?" "Certainly," he replied.
25 Then Isaac said, "Serve me your game, son, that I may eat of it and then give you my blessing." Jacob served it to him, and Isaac ate; he brought him wine, and he drank.
26 Finally his father Isaac said to him, "Come closer, son, and kiss me."
27 As Jacob went up and kissed him, Isaac smelled the fragrance of his clothes. With that, he blessed him, saying, "Ah, the fragrance of my son is like the fragrance of a field that the LORD has blessed!
28 "May God give to you of the dew of the heavens And of the fertility of the earth abundance of grain and wine.
29 "Let peoples serve you, and nations pay you homage; Be master of your brothers, and may your mother's sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, and blessed be those who bless you."
30 Jacob had scarcely left his father, just after Isaac had finished blessing him, when his brother Esau came back from his hunt.
31 Then he too prepared an appetizing dish with his game, and bringing it to his father, he said, "Please, father, eat some of your son's game, that you may then give me your special blessing."
32 "Who are you?" his father Isaac asked him. "I am Esau," he replied, "your first-born son."
33 With that, Isaac was seized with a fit of uncontrollable trembling. "Who was it, then," he asked, "that hunted game and brought it to me? I finished eating it just before you came, and I blessed him. Now he must remain blessed!"
34 On hearing his father's words, Esau burst into loud, bitter sobbing. "Father, bless me too!" he begged.
35 When Isaac explained, "Your brother came here by a ruse and carried off your blessing,"
36 Esau exclaimed, "He has been well named Jacob! He has now supplanted me twice! First he took away my birthright, and now he has taken away my blessing." Then he pleaded, "Haven't you saved a blessing for me?"
37 Isaac replied: "I have already appointed him your master, and I have assigned to him all his kinsmen as his slaves; besides, I have enriched him with grain and wine. What then can I do for you, son?"
38 But Esau urged his father, "Have you only that one blessing, father? Bless me too!" Isaac, however, made no reply; and Esau wept aloud.
39 Finally Isaac spoke again and said to him: "Ah, far from the fertile earth shall be your dwelling; far from the dew of the heavens above!
40 "By your sword you shall live, and your brother you shall serve; But when you become restive, you shall throw off his yoke from your neck."
41 Esau bore Jacob a grudge because of the blessing his father had given him. He said to himself, "When the time of mourning for my father comes, I will kill my brother Jacob."
42 When Rebekah got news of what her older son Esau had in mind, she called her younger son Jacob and said to him: "Listen! Your brother Esau intends to settle accounts with you by killing you.
43 Therefore, son, do what I tell you: flee at once to my brother Laban in Haran,
44 and stay with him a while until your brother's fury subsides
45 (until your brother's anger against you subsides) and he forgets what you did to him. Then I will send for you and bring you back. Must I lose both of you in a single day?"
46 Rebekah said to Isaac: "I am disgusted with life because of the Hittite women. If Jacob also should marry a Hittite woman, a native of the land, like these women, what good would life be to me?"
1 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that H3588 CONJ when Isaac H3327 was old H2204 , and his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS were dim H3543 , so that he could not see H7200 , he called H7121 W-VQY3MS Esau H6215 his eldest H1419 D-AMS son H1121 NMS-1MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , My son H1121 NMS-1MS : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Behold H2009 , here am I .
2 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC now H4994 IJEC , I am old H2204 , I know H3045 VQY1MS not H3808 NADV the day H3117 NMS of my death H4194 :
3 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore take H5375 VQI2MS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , thy weapons H3627 , thy quiver H8522 and thy bow H7198 , and go out H3318 to the field H7704 D-NMS , and take H6679 me some venison H6718 ;
4 And make H6213 me savory meat H4303 , such as H834 K-RPRO I love H157 VQQ1MS , and bring H935 it to me , that I may eat H398 ; that H5668 B-NMS my soul H5315 CFS-1MS may bless H1288 thee before H2962 B-ADV I die H4191 .
5 And Rebekah H7259 heard H8085 when Isaac H3327 spoke H1696 to H413 PREP Esau H6215 his son H1121 CMS-3MS . And Esau H6215 went H1980 W-VQY3MS to the field H7704 D-NMS to hunt H6679 for venison H6718 NMS , and to bring H935 it .
6 And Rebekah H7259 spoke H559 unto H413 PREP Jacob H3290 her son H1121 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Behold H2009 IJEC , I heard H8085 VQQ1MS thy father H1 NMS speak H1696 VPPMS unto H413 PREP Esau H6215 thy brother H251 CMS-2MS , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
7 Bring H935 me venison H6718 NMS , and make H6213 me savory meat H4303 , that I may eat H398 , and bless H1288 thee before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS before H6440 L-CMP my death H4194 .
8 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , my son H1121 , obey H8085 VQI2MS my voice H6963 according to that which H834 L-RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS command H6680 thee .
9 Go H1980 L-PPRO-2MS now H4994 IJEC to H413 PREP the flock H6629 , and fetch H3947 me from thence H8033 M-ADV two H8147 ONUM good H2896 kids H1423 of the goats H5795 ; and I will make H6213 them savory meat H4303 for thy father H1 , such as H834 K-RPRO he loveth H157 :
10 And thou shalt bring H935 it to thy father H1 , that he may eat H398 , and that he may bless H1288 thee before H6440 L-CMP his death H4194 .
11 And Jacob H3290 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Rebekah H7259 his mother H517 GFS-3MS , Behold H2005 IJEC , Esau H6215 my brother H251 is a hairy H8163 man H376 NMS , and I H595 W-PPRO-1MS am a smooth H2509 man H376 NMS :
12 My father H1 CMS-1MS peradventure H194 ADV will feel H4959 me , and I shall seem H1961 to him H5869 as a deceiver H8591 ; and I shall bring H935 a curse H7045 upon H5921 PREP-1MS me , and not H3808 W-NPAR a blessing H1293 .
13 And his mother H517 GFS-3MS said H559 W-VQY3FS unto him , Upon H5921 PREP-1MS me be thy curse H7045 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS : only H389 ADV obey H8085 VQI2MS my voice H6963 , and go H1980 fetch H3947 VQI2MS me them .
14 And he went H1980 W-VQY3MS , and fetched H3947 W-VQY3MS , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS them to his mother H517 : and his mother H517 GFS-3MS made H6213 savory meat H4303 , such as H834 K-RPRO his father H1 loved H157 .
15 And Rebekah H7259 took H3947 W-VQY3FS goodly H2530 raiment H899 of her eldest H1419 D-AMS son H1121 Esau H6215 , which H834 RPRO were with H854 her in the house H1004 , and put them upon H3847 Jacob H3290 her younger H6996 D-AMS son H1121 :
16 And she put H3847 the skins H5785 of the kids H1423 of the goats H5795 upon H5921 PREP his hands H3027 CFD-3MS , and upon H5921 PREP the smooth H2513 of his neck H6677 :
17 And she gave H5414 W-VQY3FS the savory meat H4303 and the bread H3899 , which H834 RPRO she had prepared H6213 , into the hand H3027 B-CFS of her son H1121 Jacob H3290 .
18 And he came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , My father H1 CMS-1MS : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Here H2009 am I ; who H4310 IPRO art thou H859 PPRO-2MS , my son H1121 ?
19 And Jacob H3290 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS , I H595 PPRO-1MS am Esau H6215 thy firstborn H1060 ; I have done H6213 VQQ1MS according as H834 K-RPRO thou biddest H1696 me : arise H6965 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , sit H3427 and eat H398 of my venison H6718 , that H5668 B-NMS thy soul H5315 may bless H1288 me .
20 And Isaac H3327 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his son H1121 NMS-1MS , How H4100 IPRO is it H2088 PMS that thou hast found H4672 it so quickly H4116 , my son H1121 NMS-1MS ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Because H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS thy God H430 CMP-2MS brought H7136 it to H6440 L-CMP-1MS me .
21 And Isaac H3327 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Jacob H3290 , Come near H5066 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , that I may feel H4184 thee , my son H1121 NMS-1MS , whether thou H859 be my very H2088 DPRO son H1121 NMS-1MS Esau H6215 or H518 PART not H3808 ADV .
22 And Jacob H3290 went near H5066 unto H413 PREP Isaac H3327 his father H1 CMS-3MS ; and he felt H4959 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , The voice H6963 is Jacob H3290 \'s voice H6963 CMS , but the hands H3027 are the hands H3027 CFD of Esau H6215 .
23 And he discerned H5234 him not H3808 W-NPAR , because H3588 CONJ his hands H3027 CFD-3MS were H1961 VQQ3MP hairy H8163 , as his brother H251 CMS-3MS Esau H6215 \'s hands H3027 : so he blessed H1288 him .
24 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Art thou H859 PPRO-2MS my very H2088 DPRO son H1121 NMS-1MS Esau H6215 ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS am .
25 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Bring it near H5066 to me , and I will eat H398 of my son H1121 NMS-1MS \'s venison H6718 , that H4616 L-CONJ my soul H5315 CFS-1MS may bless H1288 thee . And he brought it near H5066 to him , and he did eat H398 : and he brought H935 W-VHY3MS him wine H3196 NMS , and he drank H8354 .
26 And his father H1 CMS-3MS Isaac H3327 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Come near H5066 now H4994 IJEC , and kiss H5401 me , my son H1121 .
27 And he came near H5066 , and kissed H5401 him : and he smelled H7306 W-VOY3MS the smell H7381 CMS of his raiment H899 , and blessed H1288 him , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , See H7200 VQI2MS , the smell H7381 CMS of my son H1121 NMS-1MS is as the smell H7381 of a field H7704 which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hath blessed H1288 :
28 Therefore God H430 D-EDP give H5414 thee of the dew H2919 of heaven H8064 D-NMD , and the fatness H4924 of the earth H776 D-GFS , and plenty H7230 W-CMS of corn H1715 and wine H8492 :
29 Let people H5971 NMP serve H5647 thee , and nations H3816 bow down H7812 to thee : be H1933 lord H1376 over thy brethren H251 , and let thy mother H517 \'s sons H1121 bow down H7812 to thee : cursed H779 be every one that curseth H779 VWQ3MS thee , and blessed H1288 be he that blesseth H1288 thee .
30 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as soon as H834 K-RPRO Isaac H3327 had made an end H3615 of blessing H1288 Jacob H3290 , and Jacob H3290 was H1961 W-VQY3MS yet H389 ADV scarce gone out H3318 from the presence H6440 CMP of Isaac H3327 his father H1 CMS-3MS , that Esau H6215 his brother H251 CMS-3MS came in H935 VQPMS from his hunting H6718 .
31 And he H1931 PPRO-3MS also H1571 CONJ had made H6213 W-VQY3MS savory meat H4303 , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS it unto his father H1 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his father H1 , Let my father H1 CMS-1MS arise H6965 , and eat H398 of his son H1121 CMS-3MS \'s venison H6718 , that H5668 B-NMS thy soul H5315 may bless H1288 me .
32 And Isaac H3327 his father H1 CMS-3MS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Who H4310 IPRO art thou H859 PPRO-2MS ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS am thy son H1121 , thy firstborn H1060 Esau H6215 .
33 And Isaac H3327 trembled H2729 very exceedingly H2731 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO ? where H645 CONJ is he H1931 PPRO-3MS that hath taken H6679 venison H6718 NMS , and brought H935 VQY2MS it me , and I have eaten H398 of all H3605 M-CMS before H2962 B-ADV thou camest H935 VQY2MS , and have blessed H1288 him ? yea H1571 CONJ , and he shall be H1961 blessed H1288 VWQ3MS .
34 And when Esau H6215 heard H8085 the words H1697 CMP of his father H1 CMS-3MS , he cried H6817 with a great H1419 and H5704 PREP exceeding H3966 ADV bitter H4751 cry H6818 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his father H1 , Bless H1288 me , even me H589 PPRO-1MS also H1571 CONJ , O my father H1 .
35 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thy brother H251 CMS-2MS came H935 VQPMS with subtlety H4820 , and hath taken away H3947 W-VQY3MS thy blessing H1293 .
36 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is not he rightly H3588 named H7121 VQQ3MS Jacob H3290 ? for he hath supplanted H6117 me these H2088 DPRO two times H6471 : he took away H3947 VQQ3MS my birthright H1062 ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , now H6258 ADV he hath taken away H3947 VQQ3MS my blessing H1293 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Hast thou not H3808 I-NADV reserved H680 a blessing H1293 NFS for me ?
37 And Isaac H3327 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto Esau H6215 , Behold H2005 IJEC , I have made H7760 him thy lord H1376 , and all H3605 NMS his brethren H251 NMP-3MS have I given H5414 VQQ1MS to him for servants H5650 ; and with corn H1715 and wine H8492 have I sustained H5564 him : and what H4100 IGAT shall I do H6213 now H645 CONJ unto thee , my son H1121 ?
38 And Esau H6215 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS , Hast thou but one H259 OFS blessing H1293 , my father H1 CMS-1MS ? bless H1288 me , even me H589 PPRO-1MS also H1571 CONJ , O my father H1 CMS-1MS . And Esau H6215 lifted up H5375 W-VQY3MS his voice H6963 CMS-3MS , and wept H1058 .
39 And Isaac H3327 his father H1 CMS-3MS answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Behold H2009 IJEC , thy dwelling H4186 shall be H1961 VQY3MS the fatness H4924 of the earth H776 D-GFS , and of the dew H2919 of heaven H8064 D-NMD from above H5920 ;
40 And by H5921 M-PREP thy sword H2719 shalt thou live H2421 , and shalt serve H5647 thy brother H251 CMS-2MS ; and it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS when H834 K-RPRO thou shalt have the dominion H7300 , that thou shalt break H6561 his yoke H5923 from off H5921 M-PREP thy neck H6677 .
41 And Esau H6215 hated H7852 Jacob H3290 because of H5921 PREP the blessing H1293 wherewith H834 RPRO his father H1 CMS-3MS blessed H1288 him : and Esau H6215 said H559 W-VQY3MS in his heart H3820 , The days H3117 CMP of mourning H60 for my father H1 CMS-1MS are at hand H7126 ; then will I slay H2026 my brother H251 Jacob H3290 .
42 And these words H1697 CMP of Esau H6215 her elder H1419 D-AMS son H1121 were told H5046 to Rebekah H7259 : and she sent H7971 and called H7121 W-VQY2MS Jacob H3290 her younger H6996 son H1121 , and said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Behold H2009 IJEC , thy brother H251 CMS-2MS Esau H6215 , as touching thee , doth comfort himself H5162 , purposing to kill H2026 thee .
43 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore , my son H1121 , obey H8085 VQI2MS my voice H6963 ; and arise H6965 , flee H1272 thou to H413 PREP Laban H3837 my brother H251 to Haran H2771 ;
44 And tarry H3427 with H5973 PREP-3MS him a few H259 days H3117 NMP , until H5704 PREP thy brother H251 \'s fury H2534 turn away H7725 VQY2MS ;
45 Until H5704 PREP thy brother H251 CMS-2MS \'s anger H639 CMS turn away H7725 VQFC from H4480 PREP-2MS thee , and he forget H7911 that which H834 RPRO thou hast done H6213 VQQ2MS to him : then I will send H7971 , and fetch H3947 thee from thence H8033 M-ADV : why H4100 L-IGAT should I be deprived H7921 also H1571 CONJ of you both H8147 in one H259 ONUM day H3117 NMS ?
46 And Rebekah H7259 said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP Isaac H3327 , I am weary H6973 of my life H2416 because H6440 M-CMP of the daughters H1323 CFP of Heth H2845 : if H518 PART Jacob H3290 take H3947 a wife H802 NFS of the daughters H1323 of Heth H2845 , such as these H428 which are of the daughters H1323 of the land H776 D-GFS , what good H4100 L-IPRO shall my life H2416 NMP do me ?
