Acts 2:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together.
2 And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were.
3 Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim.
5 Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven staying in Jerusalem.
6 At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language.
7 They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, "Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans?
8 Then how does each of us hear them in his own native language?
9 We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome,
11 both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God."
12 They were all astounded and bewildered, and said to one another, "What does this mean?"
13 But others said, scoffing, "They have had too much new wine."
14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, "You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.
15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o'clock in the morning.
16 No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel:
17 'It will come to pass in the last days,' God says, 'that I will pour out a portion of my spirit upon all flesh. Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams.
18 Indeed, upon my servants and my handmaids I will pour out a portion of my spirit in those days, and they shall prophesy.
19 And I will work wonders in the heavens above and signs on the earth below: blood, fire, and a cloud of smoke.
20 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the coming of the great and splendid day of the Lord,
21 and it shall be that everyone shall be saved who calls on the name of the Lord.'
22 You who are Israelites, hear these words. Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know.
23 This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him.
24 But God raised him up, releasing him from the throes of death, because it was impossible for him to be held by it.
25 For David says of him: 'I saw the Lord ever before me, with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
26 Therefore my heart has been glad and my tongue has exulted; my flesh, too, will dwell in hope,
27 because you will not abandon my soul to the netherworld, nor will you suffer your holy one to see corruption.
28 You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'
29 My brothers, one can confidently say to you about the patriarch David that he died and was buried, and his tomb is in our midst to this day.
30 But since he was a prophet and knew that God had sworn an oath to him that he would set one of his descendants upon his throne,
31 he foresaw and spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that neither was he abandoned to the netherworld nor did his flesh see corruption.
32 God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses.
33 Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father and poured it forth, as you (both) see and hear.
34 For David did not go up into heaven, but he himself said: 'The Lord said to my Lord, "Sit at my right hand
35 until I make your enemies your footstool."'
36 Therefore let the whole house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified."
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and they asked Peter and the other apostles, "What are we to do, my brothers?"
38 Peter (said) to them, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the holy Spirit.
39 For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call."
40 He testified with many other arguments, and was exhorting them, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation."
41 Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day.
42 They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers.
43 Awe came upon everyone, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.
44 All who believed were together and had all things in common;
45 they would sell their property and possessions and divide them among all according to each one's need.
46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple area and to breaking bread in their homes. They ate their meals with exultation and sincerity of heart,
47 praising God and enjoying favor with all the people. And every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

2 And G2532 CONJ suddenly G869 ADV there came G1096 V-2ADI-3S a sound G2279 N-NSM from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM as G5618 ADV of a rushing G5342 V-PEP-GSF mighty G972 A-GSF wind G4157 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ it filled G4137 V-AAI-3S all G3650 A-ASM the G3588 T-ASM house G3624 N-ASM where G3757 ADV they were G2258 V-IXI-3P sitting G2521 V-PNP-NPM .
3 And G2532 CONJ there appeared G3700 V-API-3P unto them G846 P-DPM cloven G1266 V-PEP-NPF tongues G1100 N-NPF like as G5616 ADV of fire G4442 N-GSN , and G5037 PRT it sat G2523 V-AAI-3S upon G1909 PREP each G1538 A-ASM of them G846 P-GPM .
4 And G2532 CONJ they were all G537 A-NPM filled G4130 V-API-3P with the Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ began G756 V-ADI-3P to speak G2980 V-PAN with other G2087 A-DPF tongues G1100 N-DPF , as G2531 ADV the G3588 T-NSN Spirit G4151 N-NSN gave G1325 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-DPM utterance G669 V-PNN .
5 And G1161 CONJ there were G2258 V-IXI-3P dwelling G2730 V-PAP-NPM at G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI Jews G2453 A-NPM , devout G2126 A-NPM men G435 N-NPM , out of G575 PREP every G3956 A-GSN nation G1484 N-GSN under G5259 PREP heaven G3772 N-ASM .
6 Now G1161 CONJ when this G3588 T-GSF was noised abroad G5456 N-GSF , the G3588 T-NSN multitude G4128 N-NSN came together G4905 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ were confounded G4797 V-API-3S , because G3754 CONJ that every man G1538 A-NSM heard G191 V-IAI-3P them G846 P-GPM speak G2980 V-PAP-GPM in his own G2398 A-DSF language G1258 N-DSF .
7 And G1161 CONJ they were all G3956 A-NPM amazed G1839 V-IMI-3P and G2532 CONJ marveled G2296 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM one to another G240 C-APM , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , are G1526 V-PXI-3P not G3756 PRT-N all G3956 A-NPM these G3588 T-NPM which speak G2980 V-PAP-NPM Galilaeans G1057 N-NPM ?
8 And G2532 CONJ how G4459 ADV-I hear G191 V-PAI-1P we G2249 P-1NP every man G1538 A-NSM in our G3588 T-DSF own G2398 A-DSF tongue G1258 N-DSF , wherein G1722 PREP we were born G1080 V-API-1P ?
9 Parthians G3934 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ Medes G3370 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ Elamites G1639 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM dwellers G2730 V-PAP-NPM in Mesopotamia G3318 N-ASF , and G5037 PRT in Judea G2449 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ Cappadocia G2587 N-ASF , in Pontus G4195 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ Asia G773 N-ASF ,
10 Phrygia G5435 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ Pamphylia G3828 N-ASF , in Egypt G125 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ in the G3588 T-APN parts G3313 N-APN of G3588 T-GSF Libya G3033 N-GSF about G2596 PREP Cyrene G2957 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ strangers G1927 V-PAP-NPM of Rome G4514 A-NPM , Jews G2453 A-NPM and G2532 CONJ proselytes G4339 N-NPM ,
11 Cretes G2912 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ Arabians G690 N-NPM , we do hear G191 V-PAI-1P them G846 P-GPM speak G2980 V-PAP-GPM in our G2251 S-1DPF tongues G1100 N-DPF the G3588 T-APN wonderful works G3167 A-APN of God G2316 N-GSM .
12 And G1161 CONJ they were all G3956 A-NPM amazed G1839 V-IMI-3P , and G2532 CONJ were in doubt G1280 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM one to another G243 A-NSM , What G5101 I-ASN meaneth G2309 V-PAO-3S this G5124 D-ASN ?
13 Others G2087 A-NPM mocking G5512 V-PAP-NPM said G3004 V-IAI-3P , These men are G1526 V-PXI-3P full G3325 V-RPP-NPM of new wine G1098 N-GSN .
14 But G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM , standing up G2476 V-APP-NSM with G4862 PREP the G3588 T-DPM eleven G1733 A-NUI , lifted up G1869 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-ASF voice G5456 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ said G669 V-ADI-3S unto them G846 P-GSM , Ye men G435 N-VPM of Judea G2453 A-VPM , and G2532 CONJ all G537 A-NPM ye G3588 T-NPM that dwell G2730 V-PAP-NPM at Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , be G2077 V-PXM-3S this G5124 D-NSN known G1110 A-NSN unto you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ hearken G1801 V-ADM-2P to my G3588 T-APN words G4487 N-APN :
15 For G1063 CONJ these G3778 D-NPM are not G3756 PRT-N drunken G3184 V-PAI-3P , as G5613 ADV ye G5210 P-2NP suppose G5274 V-PAI-2P , seeing G1063 CONJ it is G2076 V-PXI-3S but the third G5154 A-NSF hour G5610 N-NSF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF day G2250 N-GSF .
16 But G235 CONJ this G5124 D-NSN is G2076 V-PXI-3S that which was spoken G2046 V-RPP-NSN by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM Joel G2493 N-PRI ;
17 And G2532 CONJ it shall come to pass G2071 V-FXI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF last G2078 A-DPF days G2250 N-DPF , saith G3004 V-PAI-3S God G2316 N-NSM , I will pour out G1632 V-FAI-1S of G575 PREP my G3588 T-GSN Spirit G4151 N-GSN upon G1909 PREP all G3956 A-ASF flesh G4561 N-ASF : and G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NPM sons G5207 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NPF daughters G2364 N-NPF shall prophesy G4395 V-FAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NPM young men G3495 N-NPM shall see G3700 V-FDI-3P visions G3706 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ your G3588 T-NPM old men G4245 A-NPM shall dream G1797 V-FPI-3P dreams G1798 N-APN :
18 And CONJ on G1909 PREP my G3588 T-APM servants G1401 N-APM and G2532 CONJ on G1909 PREP my G3588 T-APF handmaidens G1399 N-APF I will pour out G1632 V-FAI-1S in G1722 PREP those G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF of G575 PREP my G3588 T-GSN Spirit G4151 N-GSN ; and G2532 CONJ they shall prophesy G4395 V-FAI-3P :
19 And G2532 CONJ I will show G1325 V-FAI-1S wonders G5059 N-APN in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM above G507 ADV , and G2532 CONJ signs G4592 N-APN in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF earth G1093 N-GSF beneath G2736 ADV ; blood G129 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ fire G4442 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ vapor G822 N-ASF of smoke G2586 N-GSM :
20 The G3588 T-NSM sun G2246 N-NSM shall be turned G3344 V-2FPI-3S into G1519 PREP darkness G4655 N-ASN , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF moon G4582 N-NSF into G1519 PREP blood G129 N-ASN , before G4250 ADV that G3588 T-ASF great G3173 A-ASF and G2532 CONJ notable G2016 A-ASF day G2250 N-ASF of the Lord G2962 N-GSM come G2064 V-2AAN :
21 And G2532 CONJ it shall come to pass G2071 V-FXI-3S , that whosoever G3956 A-NSM shall call on G1941 V-AMS-3S the G3588 T-ASN name G3686 N-ASN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM shall be saved G4982 V-FPI-3S .
22 Ye men G435 N-VPM of Israel G2475 N-VPM , hear G191 V-AAM-2P these G3588 T-APM words G3056 N-APM ; Jesus G2424 N-ASM of Nazareth G3480 N-ASM , a man G435 N-ASM approved G584 V-RPP-ASM of G3588 T-GSM God G2316 N-GSM among G1519 PREP you G5209 P-2AP by miracles G1411 N-DPF and G2532 CONJ wonders G5059 N-DPN and G2532 CONJ signs G4592 N-DPN , which G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM did G4160 V-AAI-3S by G1223 PREP him G846 P-GSM in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN of you G5216 P-2GP , as G2531 ADV ye G846 P-NPM yourselves also G2532 CONJ know G1492 V-RAI-2P :
23 Him G5126 D-ASM , being delivered G1560 A-ASM by the G3588 T-DSF determinate G3724 V-RPP-DSF counsel G1012 N-DSF and G2532 CONJ foreknowledge G4268 N-DSF of God G2316 N-GSM , ye have taken G2983 V-2AAP-NPM , and by G1223 PREP wicked G459 A-GPM hands G5495 N-GPF have crucified G4362 V-AAP-NPM and slain G337 V-2AAI-2P :
24 Whom G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM hath raised up G450 V-AAI-3S , having loosed G3089 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-APF pains G5604 N-APF of death G2288 N-GSM : because G2530 ADV it was G2258 V-IXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N possible G1415 A-NSN that he G846 P-ASM should be holden G2902 V-PPN of G5259 PREP it G846 P-GSM .
25 For G1063 CONJ David G1138 N-PRI speaketh G3004 V-PAI-3S concerning G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM , I foresaw G4308 V-IMI-1S the G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-ASM always G1223 PREP before G1799 ADV my face G3450 P-1GS , for G3754 CONJ he is G2076 V-PXI-3S on G1537 PREP my G3450 P-1GS right hand G1188 A-GPM , that G2443 CONJ I should not G3361 PRT-N be moved G4531 V-APS-1S :
26 Therefore G1223 PREP did my G3588 T-NSF heart G2588 N-NSF rejoice G2165 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ my G3588 T-NSF tongue G1100 N-NSF was glad G21 V-ADI-3S ; moreover G1161 CONJ also G2532 CONJ my G3588 T-NSF flesh G4561 N-NSF shall rest G2681 V-FAI-3S in G1909 PREP hope G1680 N-DSF :
27 Because G3754 CONJ thou wilt not G3756 PRT-N leave G1459 V-FAI-2S my G3588 T-ASF soul G5590 N-ASF in G1519 PREP hell G86 N-GSM , neither G3761 ADV wilt thou suffer G1325 V-FAI-2S thine G3588 T-ASM Holy One G3741 A-ASM to see G1492 V-2AAN corruption G1312 N-ASF .
28 Thou hast made known G1107 V-AAI-2S to me G3427 P-1DS the ways G3598 N-APF of life G2222 N-GSF ; thou shalt make me full G4137 V-FAI-2S of joy G2167 N-GSF with G3326 PREP thy G3588 T-GSN countenance G4383 N-GSN .
29 Men G435 N-VPM and brethren G80 N-VPM , let G1832 V-PQP-NSN me freely G3954 N-GSF speak G2036 V-2AAN unto G4314 PREP you G5209 P-2AP of G4012 PREP the G3588 T-GSM patriarch G3966 N-GSM David G1138 N-PRI , that G3754 CONJ he is both dead G5053 V-AAI-3S and G2532 CONJ buried G2290 V-2API-3S , and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-NSN sepulcher G3418 N-NSN is G2076 V-PXI-3S with G1722 PREP us G2254 P-1DP unto G891 PREP this G3588 T-GSF day G2250 N-GSF .
30 Therefore G3767 CONJ being G5225 V-PAP-NSM a prophet G4396 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ knowing G1492 V-RAP-NSM that G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM had sworn G3660 V-AAI-3S with an oath G3727 N-DSM to him G846 P-DSM , that of G1537 PREP the fruit G2590 N-GSM of G3588 T-GSF his G3588 T-GSF loins G3751 N-GSF , according to G2596 PREP the flesh G4561 N-ASF , he G3588 T-ASM would raise up G450 V-FAN Christ G5547 N-ASM to sit G2523 V-AAN on G1909 PREP his G3588 T-GSM throne G2362 N-GSM ;
31 He seeing this before G4275 V-2AAP-NSM spake G2980 V-AAI-3S of G4012 PREP the G3588 T-GSF resurrection G386 N-GSF of Christ G5547 N-GSM , that G3754 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF soul G5590 N-NSF was not G3756 PRT-N left G2641 V-API-3S in G1519 PREP hell G86 N-GSM , neither G3761 ADV his G3588 T-NSF flesh G4561 N-NSF did see G1492 V-2AAI-3S corruption G1312 N-ASF .
32 This G3588 T-ASM Jesus G2424 N-ASM hath God G2316 N-NSM raised up G450 V-AAI-3S , whereof G3739 R-GSM we G2249 P-1NP all G3956 A-NPM are G2070 V-PXI-1P witnesses G3144 N-NPM .
33 Therefore G3767 CONJ being by the G3588 T-DSF right hand G1188 A-DSF of God G2316 N-GSM exalted G5312 V-APP-NSM , and G5037 PRT having received G2983 V-2AAP-NSM of G3844 PREP the G3588 T-GSM Father G3962 N-GSM the G3588 T-ASF promise G1860 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN , he hath shed forth G1632 V-AAI-3S this G5124 D-ASN , which G3739 R-ASN ye G5210 P-2NP now G3568 ADV see G991 V-PAI-2P and G2532 CONJ hear G191 V-PAI-2P .
34 For G1063 CONJ David G1138 N-PRI is not G3756 PRT-N ascended G305 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APM heavens G3772 N-APM : but G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S himself G3588 T-NSM , The G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto my G3588 T-DSM Lord G2962 N-DSM , Sit G2521 V-PNM-2S thou on G1537 PREP my G3450 P-1GS right hand G1188 A-GPM ,
35 Until G2193 CONJ I make G5087 V-2AAS-1S thy G3588 T-APM foes G2190 A-APM thy footstool G5286 N-ASN .
36 Therefore G3767 CONJ let all G3956 A-NSM the house G3624 N-NSM of Israel G2474 N-PRI know G1097 V-PAM-3S assuredly G806 ADV , that G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM hath made G4160 V-AAI-3S that G3588 T-ASM same G3588 T-ASM Jesus G2424 N-ASM , whom G3739 R-ASM ye G5210 P-2NP have crucified G4717 V-AAI-2P , both G2532 CONJ Lord G2962 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ Christ G5547 N-ASM .
37 Now G1161 CONJ when they heard G191 V-AAP-NPM this , they G3588 T-DSF were pricked G2660 V-2API-3P in their heart G2588 N-DSF , and G5037 PRT said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto G4314 PREP Peter G4074 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ to the G3588 T-APM rest G3062 A-APM of the apostles G652 N-APM , Men G435 N-VPM and brethren G80 N-VPM , what G5101 I-ASN shall we do G4160 V-FAI-1P ?
38 Then G1161 CONJ Peter G4074 N-NSM said G5346 V-IXI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Repent G3340 V-AAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ be baptized G907 V-APM-3S every one G1538 A-NSM of you G5216 P-2GP in G1909 PREP the G3588 T-DSN name G3686 N-DSN of Jesus G2424 N-GSM Christ G5547 N-GSM for G1519 PREP the remission G859 N-ASF of sins G266 N-GPF , and G2532 CONJ ye shall receive G2983 V-FDI-2P the G3588 T-ASF gift G1431 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN .
39 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF promise G1860 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP , and G2532 CONJ to your G3588 T-DPN children G5043 N-DPN , and G2532 CONJ to all G3956 A-DPM that G3588 T-DPM are afar off G1519 PREP , even as many as K-APM the Lord G2962 N-NSM our G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM shall call G4341 V-ADS-3S .
40 And G5037 PRT with many G4119 A-DPM-C other G2087 A-DPM words G3056 N-DPM did he testify G1263 V-INI-3S and G2532 CONJ exhort G3870 V-IAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Save G4982 V-APM-2P yourselves from G575 PREP this G3588 T-GSF untoward G4646 A-GSF generation G1074 N-GSF .
41 Then G3767 CONJ they that gladly received G588 V-ADP-NPM his G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM were baptized G907 V-API-3P : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM same G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF there were added G4369 V-API-3P unto them about G5616 ADV three thousand G5153 A-NPF souls G5590 N-NPF .
42 And G1161 CONJ they continued steadfastly G2258 V-IXI-3P in the G3588 T-GPM apostles G652 N-GPM \' doctrine G1322 N-DSF and G2532 CONJ fellowship G2842 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ in breaking G2800 N-DSF of bread G740 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ in prayers G4335 N-DPF .
43 And G1161 CONJ fear G5401 N-NSM came G1096 V-2ADI-3S upon every G3956 A-DSF soul G5590 N-DSF : and G5037 PRT many G4183 A-NPN wonders G5059 N-NPN and G2532 CONJ signs G4592 N-NPN were done G1096 V-INI-3S by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GPM apostles G652 N-GPM .
44 And G1161 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM that believed G4100 V-PAP-NPM were G2258 V-IXI-3P together G1909 PREP , and G2532 CONJ had G2192 V-IAI-3P all things G537 A-APN common G2839 A-APN ;
45 And G2532 CONJ sold G4097 V-IAI-3P their possessions G2933 N-APN and G2532 CONJ goods G5223 N-APF , and G2532 CONJ parted G1266 V-IAI-3P them G846 P-APN to all G3956 A-DPM men , as G2530 ADV every man G5100 X-NSM had G2192 V-IAI-3S need G5532 N-ASF .
