Luke 4:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 Filled with the holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert
2 for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to become bread."
4 Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'One does not live by bread alone.'"
5 Then he took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a single instant.
6 The devil said to him, "I shall give to you all this power and their glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I may give it to whomever I wish.
7 All this will be yours, if you worship me."
8 Jesus said to him in reply, "It is written: 'You shall worship the Lord, your God, and him alone shall you serve.'"
9 Then he led him to Jerusalem, made him stand on the parapet of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here,
10 for it is written: 'He will command his angels concerning you, to guard you,'
11 and: 'With their hands they will support you, lest you dash your foot against a stone.'"
12 Jesus said to him in reply, "It also says, 'You shall not put the Lord, your God, to the test.'"
13 When the devil had finished every temptation, he departed from him for a time.
14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region.
15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all.
16 He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read
17 and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written:
18 "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free,
19 and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord."
20 Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him.
21 He said to them, "Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing."
22 And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, "Isn't this the son of Joseph?"
23 He said to them, "Surely you will quote me this proverb, 'Physician, cure yourself,' and say, 'Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.'"
24 And he said, "Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place.
25 Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land.
26 It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon.
27 Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian."
28 When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury.
29 They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong.
30 But he passed through the midst of them and went away.
31 Jesus then went down to Capernaum, a town of Galilee. He taught them on the sabbath,
32 and they were astonished at his teaching because he spoke with authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man with the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out in a loud voice,
34 "Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are-- the Holy One of God!"
35 Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm.
36 They were all amazed and said to one another, "What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out."
37 And news of him spread everywhere in the surrounding region.
38 After he left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her.
39 He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them.
40 At sunset, all who had people sick with various diseases brought them to him. He laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
41 And demons also came out from many, shouting, "You are the Son of God." But he rebuked them and did not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus left and went to a deserted place. The crowds went looking for him, and when they came to him, they tried to prevent him from leaving them.
43 But he said to them, "To the other towns also I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God, because for this purpose I have been sent."
44 And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

2 Being forty G5062 A-NUI days G2250 N-APF tempted G3985 V-PPP-NSM of G5259 PREP the G3588 T-GSM devil G1228 A-GSM . And G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP those G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF he did G3756 PRT-N eat G5315 V-2AAI-3S nothing G3762 A-ASN : and G2532 CONJ when they G846 P-GPF were ended G4931 V-APP-GPF , he afterward G5305 ADV hungered G3983 V-AAI-3S .
3 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM devil G1228 A-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , If G1487 COND thou be G1488 V-PXI-2S the G3588 T-GSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM , command G2036 V-2AAM-2S this G3588 T-DSM stone G3037 N-DSM that G2443 CONJ it be made G1096 V-2ADS-3S bread G740 N-NSM .
4 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S him G846 P-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , It is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , That G3588 T-NSM man G444 N-NSM shall not G3756 PRT-N live G2198 V-FDI-3S by G1909 PREP bread G740 N-DSM alone G3441 A-DSM , but G235 CONJ by G1909 PREP every G3956 A-DSN word G4487 N-DSN of God G2316 N-GSM .
5 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM devil G1228 A-NSM , taking him up G321 V-2AAP-NSM into G1519 PREP a high G5308 A-ASN mountain G3735 N-ASN , showed G1166 V-AAI-3S unto him G846 P-ASM all G3956 A-APF the G3588 T-APF kingdoms G932 N-APF of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF world G3625 N-GSF in G1722 PREP a moment G4743 N-DSF of time G5550 N-GSM .
6 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM devil G1228 A-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , All G537 A-ASF this G3588 T-ASF power G1849 N-ASF will I give G1325 V-FAI-1S thee G4671 P-2DS , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASF glory G1391 N-ASF of them G846 P-GPF : for G3754 CONJ that is delivered G3860 V-RPI-3S unto me G1698 P-1DS ; and G2532 CONJ to whomsoever G3739 R-DSM I will G2309 V-PAS-1S I give G1325 V-PAI-1S it G846 P-ASF .
7 If G1437 COND thou G4771 P-2NS therefore G3767 CONJ wilt worship G4352 V-AAS-2S me G3450 , all G3956 A-NSF shall be G2071 V-FXI-3S thine G4675 P-2GS .
8 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Get G5217 V-PAM-2S thee behind G3694 ADV me G3450 P-1GS , Satan G4567 N-VSM : for G1063 it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , Thou shalt worship G4352 V-FAI-2S the Lord G2962 N-ASM thy G3588 T-ASM God G2316 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ him G846 P-DSM only G3441 A-DSM shalt thou serve G3000 V-FAI-2S .
9 And G2532 CONJ he brought G71 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ set G2476 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM on G1909 PREP a pinnacle G4419 N-ASN of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN temple G2411 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , If G1487 COND thou be G1488 V-PXI-2S the G3588 T-GSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM , cast G906 V-2AAM-2S thyself G4572 F-2ASM down G2736 ADV from hence G1782 ADV :
10 For G1063 CONJ it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , He shall give his angels charge G1781 V-FNI-3S over G4012 PREP thee G4675 P-2GS , to keep G1314 V-AAN thee G4571 P-2AS :
11 And G2532 CONJ in G1909 PREP their hands G5495 N-GPF they shall bear thee up G142 V-FAI-3P , lest at any time G3379 ADV thou dash G4350 V-AAS-2S thy G3588 T-ASM foot G4228 N-ASM against G4314 PREP a stone G3037 N-ASM .
12 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answering G611 V-AOP-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , It is said G2046 V-RPI-3S , Thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N tempt G1598 V-FAI-2S the Lord G2962 N-ASM thy G3588 T-ASM God G2316 N-ASM .
13 And G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NSM devil G1228 A-NSM had ended G4931 V-AAP-NSM all G3956 A-ASM the temptation G3986 N-ASM , he departed G868 V-2AAI-3S from G575 PREP him G846 P-GSM for a season G2540 N-GSM .
14 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM returned G5290 V-AAI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF power G1411 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN Spirit G4151 N-GSN into G1519 PREP Galilee G1056 N-ASF : and G2532 CONJ there went out G1831 V-2AAI-3S a fame G5345 N-NSF of G4012 PREP him G846 P-GSM through G2596 PREP all G3650 A-GSF the G3588 T-GSF region round about G4066 A-GSF .
15 And G2532 CONJ he G846 P-NSM taught G1321 V-IAI-3S in G1722 PREP their G3588 T-DPF synagogues G4864 N-DPF , being glorified G1392 V-PPP-NSM of G5259 PREP all G3956 A-GPM .
16 And G2532 CONJ he came G2064 V-2AAI-3S to G1519 PREP Nazareth G3478 N-PRI , where G3757 ADV he had been G2258 V-IXI-3S brought up G5142 V-RPP-NSM : and G2532 CONJ , as G2596 PREP his G3588 T-ASN custom G1486 V-2RAP-ASN was , he went G1525 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF synagogue G4864 N-ASF on G1722 PREP the G3588 T-GPN sabbath G4521 N-GPN day G2250 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ stood up G450 V-2AAI-3S for to read G314 V-2AAN .
17 And G2532 CONJ there was delivered G1929 V-API-3S unto him G846 P-DSM the book G975 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM Isaiah G2268 N-GSM . And G2532 CONJ when he had opened G380 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASN book G975 N-ASN , he found G2147 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASM place G5117 N-ASM where G3757 ADV it was G2258 V-IXI-3S written G1125 V-RPP-NSN ,
18 The Spirit G4151 N-NSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM is upon G1909 PREP me G1691 P-1AS , because G1752 ADV he hath anointed G5548 V-AAI-3S me G3165 P-1AS to preach the gospel G2097 V-AMN to the poor G4434 A-DPM ; he hath sent G649 V-RAI-3S me G3165 P-1AS to heal G2390 V-ADN the G3588 T-ASF brokenhearted G2588 N-ASF , to preach G2784 V-AAN deliverance G859 N-ASF to the captives G164 N-DPM , and G2532 CONJ recovering of sight G309 N-ASF to the blind G5185 A-DPM , to set G649 V-AAN at G1722 PREP liberty G859 N-DSF them that are bruised G2352 V-RPP-APM ,
19 To preach G2784 V-AAN the acceptable G1184 A-ASM year G1763 N-ASM of the Lord G2962 N-GSM .
20 And G2532 CONJ he closed G4428 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASN book G975 N-ASN , and he gave it again G591 V-2AAP-NSM to the G3588 T-DSM minister G5257 N-DSM , and sat down G2523 V-AAI-3S . And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM eyes G3788 N-NPM of all G3956 A-GPM them that were in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF synagogue G4864 N-DSF were G2258 V-IXI-3P fastened on G816 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-DSM .
21 And G1161 CONJ he began G756 V-ADI-3S to say G3004 V-PAN unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , This day G4594 ADV is this G3588 T-NSF Scripture G1124 N-NSF fulfilled G4137 V-RPI-3S in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPN ears G3775 N-DPN .
22 And G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM bare him witness G3140 V-IAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ wondered G2296 V-IAI-3P at G1909 PREP the G3588 T-GSF gracious G5485 N-GSF words G3588 T-DPM which proceeded G1607 V-PNP-DPM out of G1537 PREP his G3588 T-GSN mouth G4750 N-GSN . And G2532 CONJ they said G3004 V-IAI-3P , Is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N this G3778 D-NSM Joseph G2501 N-PRI \'s son G5207 N-NSM ?
23 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Ye will surely G3843 ADV say G2046 V-FAI-2P unto me G3427 P-1DS this G3588 T-ASF proverb G3850 N-ASF , Physician G2395 N-VSM , heal G2323 V-AAM-2S thyself G4572 F-2ASM : whatsoever G3745 K-APN we have heard G191 V-AAI-1P done G1096 V-2ADP-APN in G1722 PREP Capernaum G2584 N-PRI , do G4160 V-AAM-2S also G2532 CONJ here G5602 ADV in G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSF country G3968 N-DSF .
24 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , No G3762 A-NSM prophet G4396 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S accepted G1184 A-NSM in G1722 PREP his G3588 T-DSF own G848 country G3968 N-DSF ,
25 But G1161 CONJ I tell G3004 V-PAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP of G1909 PREP a truth G225 N-GSF , many G4183 A-NPF widows G5503 N-NPF were G2258 V-IXI-3P in G1722 PREP Israel G2474 N-PRI in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF of Elijah G2243 N-GSM , when G3753 ADV the G3588 T-NSM heaven G3772 N-NSM was shut up G2808 V-API-3S three G5140 A-APN years G2094 N-APN and G2532 CONJ six G1803 A-NUI months G3376 N-APM , when G5613 ADV great G3173 A-NSM famine G3042 N-NSM was G1096 V-2ADI-3S throughout G1909 PREP all G3956 A-ASF the G3588 T-ASF land G1093 N-ASF ;
26 But G2532 CONJ unto G4314 PREP none G3762 A-ASF of them G846 P-GPF was Elijah G2243 N-NSM sent G3992 V-API-3S , save G1508 unto G1519 PREP Sarepta G4558 N-APN , a city of Sidon G4605 N-GSF , unto G4314 PREP a woman G1135 N-ASF that was a widow G5503 N-ASF .
27 And G2532 CONJ many G4183 A-NPM lepers G3015 A-NPM were G2258 V-IXI-3P in G1722 PREP Israel G2474 N-PRI in the time G1909 PREP of Elisha G1666 N-GSM the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM ; and G2532 CONJ none G3762 A-NSM of them G846 P-GPM was cleansed G2511 V-API-3S , saving G1508 Naaman G3497 N-PRI the G3588 T-NSM Syrian G4948 N-NSM .
28 And G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM they in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF synagogue G4864 N-DSF , when they heard G191 V-PAP-NPM these things G5023 D-APN , were filled G4130 V-API-3P with wrath G2372 N-GSM ,
29 And G2532 CONJ rose up G450 V-2AAP-NPM , and thrust G1544 V-2AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM out G1854 ADV of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF city G4172 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ led G71 V-2AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM unto G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-GSN brow G3790 N-GSF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN hill G3735 N-GSN whereon G1909 PREP their G3588 T-NSF city G4172 N-NSF was built G3618 V-LPI-3S , that they might cast him down headlong G2630 V-AAN .
30 But G1161 CONJ he G846 P-NSM passing G1330 V-2AAP-NSM through G1223 PREP the midst G3319 A-GSN of them G846 P-GPM went his way G4198 V-INI-3S ,
31 And G2532 CONJ came down G2718 V-2AAI-3S to G1519 PREP Capernaum G2584 N-PRI , a city G4172 N-ASF of Galilee G1056 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ taught G2258 V-IXI-3S them G846 P-APM on G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPN sabbath days G4521 N-DPN .
32 And G2532 CONJ they were astonished G1605 V-IPI-3P at G1909 PREP his G3588 T-DSF doctrine G1322 N-DSF : for G3754 CONJ his G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S with G1722 PREP power G1849 N-DSF .
33 And G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF synagogue G4864 N-DSF there was G2258 V-IXI-3S a man G444 N-NSM , which had G2192 V-PAP-NSM a spirit G4151 N-ASN of an unclean G169 A-GSN devil G1140 N-GSN , and G2532 CONJ cried out G349 V-AAI-3S with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF ,
34 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Let us alone G1436 INJ ; what have we to do with thee G5101 I-NSN , thou Jesus G2424 N-VSM of Nazareth G3479 N-VSM ? art thou come G2064 V-2AAI-2S to destroy G622 V-AAN us G2248 P-1AP ? I know G1492 V-RAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS who G5101 I-NSM thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S ; the G3588 T-NSM Holy One G40 A-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM .
35 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM rebuked G2008 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-DSN , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Hold thy peace G5392 V-APM-2S , and G2532 CONJ come G1831 V-2AAM-2S out of G1537 PREP him G846 P-GSM . And G2532 CONJ when the G3588 T-NSN devil G1140 N-NSN had thrown G4496 V-AAP-NSN him G846 P-ASM in G1519 PREP the G3588 T-NSN midst G3319 A-ASN , he came G1831 V-2AAI-3S out of G575 PREP him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ hurt G984 V-AAP-NSN him G846 P-ASM not G3367 A-ASN .
36 And G2532 CONJ they were G1909 PREP all G3956 A-APM amazed G2285 N-NSN , and G2532 CONJ spake G4814 V-IAI-3P among G4314 PREP themselves G240 C-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , What G3588 T-NSM a word G3056 N-NSM is this G3778 D-NSM ! for G3754 CONJ with G1722 PREP authority G1849 N-DSF and G2532 CONJ power G1411 N-DSF he commandeth G2004 V-PAI-3S the G3588 T-DPN unclean G169 A-DPN spirits G4151 N-DPN , and G2532 CONJ they come out G1831 V-PNI-3P .
37 And G2532 CONJ the fame G2279 N-NSM of G4012 PREP him G846 P-GSM went out G1607 V-INI-3S into G1519 PREP every G3956 A-ASM place G5117 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSF the G3588 T-GSF country round about G4066 A-GSF .
38 And G1161 CONJ he arose G450 V-2AAP-NSM out of G1537 PREP the G3588 T-GSF synagogue G4864 N-GSF , and entered G1525 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP Simon G4613 N-GSM \'s house G3614 N-ASF . And G1161 CONJ Simon G4613 N-GSM \'s wife\'s mother G3994 N-NSF was G2258 V-IXI-3S taken with G4912 V-PPP-NSF a great G3173 A-DSM fever G4446 N-DSM ; and G2532 CONJ they besought G2065 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM for G4012 PREP her G846 P-GSF .
39 And G2532 CONJ he stood G2186 V-2AAP-NSM over G1883 ADV her G846 P-GSF , and rebuked G2008 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-DSM fever G4446 N-DSM ; and G2532 CONJ it left G863 V-AAI-3S her G846 P-ASF : and G1161 CONJ immediately G3916 ADV she arose G450 V-2AAP-NSF and ministered G1247 V-IAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM .
40 Now G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-GSM sun G2246 N-GSM was setting G1416 V-PAP-GSM , all G3956 A-NPM they G3745 K-NPM that had G2192 V-IAI-3P any sick G770 V-PAP-APM with divers G4164 A-DPF diseases G3554 N-DPF brought G71 V-2AAI-3P them G846 P-APM unto G4314 PREP him G3588 T-NSM ; and G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM laid his hands on V-2AAP-NSM every G1538 A-DSM one G1520 A-DSM of them G846 P-GPM , and healed G2323 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-APM .
41 And G1161 CONJ devils G1140 N-NPN also G2532 CONJ came G1831 V-INI-3S out of G575 PREP many G4183 A-GPM , crying out G2896 V-PAP-NPN , and G2532 CONJ saying G3004 V-PAP-NPN , Thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S Christ G5547 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of God G2316 N-GSM . And G2532 CONJ he rebuking G2008 V-PAP-NSM them suffered G1439 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-APN not G3756 PRT-N to speak G2980 V-PAN : for G3754 CONJ they knew G1492 V-LAI-3P that he G846 P-ASM was G1511 V-PXN Christ G5547 N-ASM .
42 And G1161 CONJ when it was G1096 V-2ADP-GSF day G2250 N-GSF , he departed G1831 V-2AAP-NSM and went G4198 V-AOI-3S into G1519 PREP a desert G2048 A-ASM place G5117 N-ASM : and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM people G3793 N-NPM sought G2212 him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ came G2064 V-2AAI-3P unto G2193 CONJ him G846 P-GSM , and G2532 CONJ stayed G2722 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , that he should not G3361 PRT-N depart G4198 V-PNN from G575 PREP them G846 P-GPM .
43 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , I G3165 P-1AS must G1163 V-PQI-3S preach G2097 V-AMN the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF of G3588 T-DPF God G2316 N-GSM to other G2087 A-DPF cities G4172 N-DPF also G2532 CONJ : for G3754 CONJ therefore G1519 PREP am I sent G649 V-RPI-1S .
