1 Kings 14:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 At that time Abijah, son of Jeroboam, took sick.
2 So Jeroboam said to his wife, "Get ready and disguise yourself so that none will recognize you as Jeroboam's wife. Then go to Shiloh, where you will find the prophet Ahijah. It was he who predicted my reign over this people.
3 Take along ten loaves, some cakes, and a jar of preserves, and go to him. He will tell you what will happen to the child."
4 The wife of Jeroboam obeyed. She made the journey to Shiloh and entered the house of Ahijah who could not see because age had dimmed his sight.
5 The LORD had said to Ahijah: "Jeroboam's wife is coming to consult you about her son, for he is sick. This is what you must tell her. When she comes, she will be in disguise."
6 So Ahijah, hearing the sound of her footsteps as she entered the door, said, "Come in, wife of Jeroboam. Why are you in disguise? I have been commissioned to give you bitter news.
7 Go, tell Jeroboam, 'This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I exalted you from among the people and made you ruler of my people Israel.
8 I deprived the house of David of the kingdom and gave it to you. Yet you have not been like my servant David, who kept my commandments and followed me with his whole heart, doing only what pleased me.
9 You have done worse than all who preceded you: you have gone and made for yourself strange gods and molten images to provoke me; but me you have cast behind your back.
10 Therefore, I am bringing evil upon the house of Jeroboam: I will cut off every male in Jeroboam's line, whether slave or freeman in Israel, and will burn up the house of Jeroboam completely, as though dung were being burned.
11 When one of Jeroboam's line dies in the city, dogs will devour him; when one of them dies in the field, he will be devoured by the birds of the sky. For the LORD has spoken!'
12 So leave; go home! As you step inside the city, the child will die,
13 and all Israel will mourn him and bury him, for he alone of Jeroboam's line will be laid in the grave, since in him alone of Jeroboam's house has something pleasing to the LORD, the God of Israel, been found.
14 Today, at this very moment, the LORD will raise up for himself a king of Israel who will destroy the house of Jeroboam.
15 The LORD will strike Israel like a reed tossed about in the water and will pluck out Israel from this good land which he gave their fathers, scattering them beyond the River, because they made sacred poles for themselves and thus provoked the LORD.
16 He will give up Israel because of the sins Jeroboam has committed and caused Israel to commit."
17 So Jeroboam's wife started back; when she reached Tirzah and crossed the threshold of her house, the child died.
18 He was buried with all Israel mourning him, as the LORD had prophesied through his servant the prophet Ahijah.
19 The rest of the acts of Jeroboam, with his warfare and his reign, are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel.
20 The length of Jeroboam's reign was twenty-two years. He rested with his ancestors, and his son Nadab succeeded him as king.
21 Rehoboam, son of Solomon, reigned in Judah. He was forty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned seventeen years in Jerusalem, the city in which, out of all the tribes of Israel, the LORD chose to be honored. His mother was the Ammonite named Naamah.
22 Judah did evil in the sight of the LORD, and by their sins angered him even more than their fathers had done.
23 They, too, built for themselves high places, pillars, and sacred poles, upon every high hill and under every green tree.
24 There were also cult prostitutes in the land. Judah imitated all the abominable practices of the nations whom the LORD had cleared out of the Israelites' way.
25 In the fifth year of King Rehoboam, Shishak, king of Egypt, attacked Jerusalem.
26 He took everything, including the treasures of the temple of the LORD and those of the royal palace, as well as all the gold shields made under Solomon.
27 To replace them, King Rehoboam had bronze shields made, which he entrusted to the officers of the guard on duty at the entrance of the royal palace.
28 Whenever the king visited the temple of the LORD, those on duty would carry the shields, and then return them to the guardroom.
29 The rest of the acts of Rehoboam, with all that he did, are recorded in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah.
30 There was constant warfare between Rehoboam and Jeroboam.
31 Rehoboam rested with his ancestors; he was buried with them in the City of David. His mother was the Ammonite named Naamah. His son Abijam succeeded him as king.

2 And Jeroboam H3379 said H559 W-VQY3MS to his wife H802 , Arise H6965 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and disguise thyself H8138 , that H3588 CONJ thou H859 be not H3808 W-NPAR known H3045 to be the wife H802 CFS of Jeroboam H3379 ; and get H1980 thee to Shiloh H7887 : behold H2009 IJEC , there H8033 ADV is Ahijah H281 the prophet H5030 , which H1931 PPRO-3MS told H1696 me that I should be king H4428 L-CMS over H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 .
3 And take H3947 with H3027 thee ten H6235 loaves H3899 NMS , and cracknels H5350 , and a cruse H1228 of honey H1706 NMS , and go H935 to H413 PREP-3MS him : he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall tell H5046 VHY3MS thee what H4100 IPRO shall become H1961 of the child H5288 .
4 And Jeroboam H3379 \'s wife H802 CFS did H6213 so H3651 ADV , and arose H6965 , and went H1980 W-VQQ3FS to Shiloh H7887 , and came H935 W-VQY3FS to the house H1004 CMS of Ahijah H281 . But Ahijah H281 could H3201 not H3808 ADV see H7200 L-VQFC ; for H3588 CONJ his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS were set H6965 VQQ3MP by reason of his age H7869 .
5 And the LORD H3068 W-EDS said H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP Ahijah H281 , Behold H2009 IJEC , the wife H802 CFS of Jeroboam H3379 cometh H935 VQQ3FS to ask H1875 L-VQFC a thing H1697 VQPMS of thee for H413 PREP her son H1121 ; for H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS is sick H2470 : thus H2090 and thus H2088 shalt thou say H1696 unto H413 PREP her : for it shall be H1961 W-VQI3MS , when she cometh in H935 , that she H1931 shall feign herself to be another woman H5234 .
6 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when Ahijah H281 heard H8085 the sound H6963 CMS of her feet H7272 , as she came in H935 VQQ3FS at the door H6607 , that he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Come in H935 , thou wife H802 CFS of Jeroboam H3379 ; why H4100 L-IPRO feignest thou thyself to be another H5234 ? for I H595 W-PPRO-1MS am sent H7971 to H413 thee with heavy H7186 tidings .
7 Go H1980 , tell H559 VQI2FS Jeroboam H3379 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Forasmuch H3282 ADV as I exalted H7311 thee from among H8432 the people H5971 , and made H5414 thee prince H5057 NMS over H5921 PREP my people H5971 Israel H3478 LMS ,
8 And rent H7167 the kingdom H4467 away from the house H1004 of David H1732 MMS , and gave H5414 it thee : and yet thou hast not H3808 W-NPAR been H1961 VQQ2MS as my servant H5650 K-CMS-1MS David H1732 , who H834 RPRO kept H8104 my commandments H4687 , and who H834 RPRO followed H1980 VQQ3MS me with all H3605 B-CMS his heart H3824 , to do H6213 L-VQFC that only H7535 ADV which was right H3477 in mine eyes H5869 ;
9 But hast done H6213 L-VQFC evil H7489 above all H3605 M-CMS that H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : for thou hast gone H1980 W-VQQ3FS and made H6213 thee other H312 AMP gods H430 EDP , and molten images H4541 , to provoke me to anger H3707 , and hast cast H7993 me behind H310 PREP thy back H1458 :
10 Therefore H3651 L-ADV behold H2009 , I will bring H935 VHPMS evil H7451 AFS upon H413 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Jeroboam H3379 , and will cut off H3772 from Jeroboam H3379 him that pisseth H8366 against the wall H7023 , and him that is shut up H6113 and left H5800 in Israel H3478 , and will take away H1197 the remnant H310 PREP of the house H1004 CMS of Jeroboam H3379 , as H834 K-RPRO a man taketh away H1197 dung H1557 , till H5704 PREP it be all gone H8552 .
11 Him that dieth H4191 of Jeroboam H3379 in the city H5892 BD-NFS shall the dogs H3611 eat H398 ; and him that dieth H4191 in the field H7704 B-NMS shall the fowls H5775 NMS of the air H8064 D-AMP eat H398 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS hath spoken H1696 it .
12 Arise H6965 thou H859 therefore , get H1980 thee to thine own house H1004 : and when thy feet H7272 enter H935 into the city H5892 , the child H3206 shall die H4191 .
13 And all H3605 CMS Israel H3478 shall mourn H5594 for him , and bury H6912 him : for DPRO he only H905 L-CMS-3MS of Jeroboam H3379 shall come H935 VQY3MS to H413 PREP the grave H6913 NMS , because H3282 ADV in him there is found H4672 VNQ3MS some good H2896 AMS thing H1697 VQPMS toward H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 in the house H1004 B-CMS of Jeroboam H3379 .
14 Moreover the LORD H3068 EDS shall raise him up H6965 a king H4428 NMS over H5921 PREP Israel H3478 , who H834 RPRO shall cut off H3772 the house H1004 CMS of Jeroboam H3379 that H2088 DPRO day H3117 D-AMS : but what H4100 W-IGAT ? even H1571 CONJ now H6258 .
15 For the LORD H3068 EDS shall smite H5221 Israel H3478 , as H834 RPRO a reed H7070 is shaken H5110 in the water H4325 BD-NMP , and he shall root up H5428 Israel H3478 out of M-PREP this H2063 D-DFS good H2896 land H127 D-NFS , which H834 RPRO he gave H5414 VQQ3MS to their fathers H1 , and shall scatter H2219 them beyond H5676 M-CMS the river H5104 , because H3282 ADV they have made H6213 VQQ3MP their groves H842 , provoking the LORD to anger H3707 .
16 And he shall give Israel up H5414 because H1558 of the sins H2403 of Jeroboam H3379 , who H834 RPRO did sin H2398 VQQ3MS , and who H834 RPRO made Israel to sin H2398 .
17 And Jeroboam H3379 \'s wife H802 CFS arose H6965 , and departed H1980 W-VQQ3FS , and came H935 W-VQY3FS to Tirzah H8656 : and when she H1931 PPRO-3FS came H935 VQQ3FS to the threshold H5592 of the door H1004 D-NMS , the child H5288 died H4191 ;
18 And they buried H6912 him ; and all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 mourned H5594 for him , according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO he spoke H1696 VPQ3MS by the hand H3027 B-CFS of his servant H5650 Ahijah H281 the prophet H5030 .
19 And the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Jeroboam H3379 , how H834 RPRO he warred H3898 , and how H834 RPRO he reigned H4427 , behold H2009 , they are written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 of Israel H3478 LMS .
20 And the days H3117 which H834 RPRO Jeroboam H3379 reigned H4427 were two H8147 W-OFD and twenty H6242 years H8141 NFS : and he slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and Nadab H5070 his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
21 And Rehoboam H7346 the son H1121 of Solomon H8010 MMS reigned H4427 in Judah H3063 . Rehoboam H7346 was forty H705 MMP and one H259 years H8141 NFS old H1121 when he began to reign H4427 , and he reigned H4427 seventeen H7651 years H8141 NFS in Jerusalem H3389 , the city H5892 D-GFS which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS did choose H977 out of all H3605 M-CMS the tribes H7626 of Israel H3478 , to put H7760 L-VQFC his name H8034 CMS-3MS there H8033 ADV . And his mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s name H8034 W-CMS was Naamah H5279 an Ammonitess H5984 .
22 And Judah H3063 did H6213 W-VQY3MS evil H7451 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and they provoked him to jealousy H7065 with their sins H2403 which H834 RPRO they had committed H2398 VQQ3MP , above all H3605 M-CMS that H834 RPRO their fathers H1 had done H6213 W-VQY3MS .
23 For they H1992 PPRO-3MP also H1571 CONJ built H1129 them high places H1116 , and images H4676 , and groves H842 , on H5921 PREP every H3605 NMS high H1364 hill H1389 , and under H8478 every H3605 NMS green H7488 tree H6086 NMS .
24 And there were H1961 VQQ3MS also H1571 W-CONJ sodomites H6945 in the land H776 BD-GFS : and they did H6213 VQQ3MP according to all H3605 K-NMS the abominations H8441 of the nations H1471 D-NMP which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS cast out H3423 before H6440 M-CMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
25 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the fifth H2549 year H8141 of king H4428 NMS Rehoboam H7346 , that Shishak H7895 king H4428 NMS of Egypt H4714 EFS came up H5927 against H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 :
26 And he took away H3947 W-VQY3MS the treasures H214 CMP of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and the treasures H214 of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS ; he even took away H3947 VQQ3MS all H3605 NMS : and he took away H3947 W-VQY3MS all H3605 NMS the shields H4043 of gold H2091 which H834 RPRO Solomon H8010 had made H6213 VQQ3MS .
27 And king H4428 D-NMS Rehoboam H7346 made H6213 W-VQY3MS in their stead H8478 brazen H5178 CFS shields H4043 , and committed H6485 them unto H5921 PREP the hands H3027 CFS of the chief H8269 CMP of the guard H7323 , which kept H8104 the door H6607 CMS of the king H4428 \'s house H1004 CMS .
28 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , when H1767 the king H4428 D-NMS went H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , that the guard H7323 bore H5375 them , and brought them back H7725 into H413 PREP the guard H7323 chamber H8372 .
29 Now the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Rehoboam H7346 , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS , are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 I-NADV written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 of Judah H3063 ?
30 And there was H1961 VQQ3FS war H4421 between H996 W-PREP Rehoboam H7346 and Jeroboam H3379 all H3605 NMS their days H3117 D-NMP .
31 And Rehoboam H7346 slept H7901 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 , and was buried H6912 with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 in the city H5892 of David H1732 MMS . And his mother H517 GFS-3MS \'s name H8034 W-CMS was Naamah H5279 an Ammonitess H5984 . And Abijam H38 his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
