2 Samuel 17:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 Ahithophel went on to say to Absalom: "Please let me choose twelve thousand men, and be off in pursuit of David tonight.
2 If I come upon him when he is weary and discouraged, I shall cause him panic. When all the people with him flee, I shall strike down the king alone.
3 Then I can bring back the rest of the people to you, as a bride returns to her husband. It is the death of only one man you are seeking; then all the people will be at peace."
4 This plan was agreeable to Absalom and to all the elders of Israel.
5 Then Absalom said, "Now call Hushai the Archite also; let us hear what he too has to say."
6 When Hushai came to Absalom, Absalom said to him: "This is what Ahithophel proposed. Shall we follow his proposal? If not, speak up."
7 Hushai replied to Absalom, "This time Ahithophel has not given good counsel."
8 And he went on to say: "You know that your father and his men are warriors, and that they are as fierce as a bear in the wild robbed of her cubs. Moreover, since your father is skilled in warfare, he will not spend the night with the people.
9 Even now he lies hidden in one of the caves or in some other place. And if some of our soldiers should fall at the first attack, whoever hears of it will say, 'Absalom's followers have been slaughtered.'
10 Then even the brave man with the heart of a lion will lose courage. For all Israel knows that your father is a warrior and that those who are with him are brave.
11 "This is what I counsel: Let all Israel from Dan to Beer-sheba, who are as numerous as the sands by the sea, be called up for combat; and go with them yourself.
12 We can then attack him wherever we find him, settling down upon him as dew alights on the ground. None shall survive-- neither he nor any of his followers.
13 And if he retires into a city, all Israel shall bring ropes to that city and we can drag it into the gorge, so that not even a pebble of it can be found."
14 Then Absalom and all the Israelites pronounced the counsel of Hushai the Archite better than that of Ahithophel. For the LORD had decided to undo Ahithophel's good counsel, in order thus to bring Absalom to ruin.
15 Then Hushai said to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: "This is the counsel Ahithophel gave Absalom and the elders of Israel, and this is what I counseled.
16 So send a warning to David immediately, not to spend the night at the fords near the desert, but to cross over without fail. Otherwise the king and all the people with him will be destroyed."
17 Now Jonathan and Ahimaaz were staying at En-rogel, since they could not risk being seen entering the city. A maidservant was to come with information for them, and they in turn were to go and report to King David.
18 But an attendant saw them and informed Absalom. They sped on their way and reached the house of a man in Bahurim who had a cistern in his courtyard. They let themselves down into this,
19 and the housewife took the cover and spread it over the cistern, strewing ground grain on the cover so that nothing could be noticed.
20 When Absalom's servants came to the woman at the house, they asked, "Where are Ahimaaz and Jonathan?" The woman replied, "They went by a short while ago toward the water." They searched, but found no one, and so returned to Jerusalem.
21 As soon as they left, Ahimaaz and Jonathan came up out of the cistern and went on to inform King David. They said to him: "Leave! Cross the water at once, for Ahithophel has given the following counsel in regard to you."
22 So David and all his people moved on and crossed the Jordan. By daybreak, there was no one left who had not crossed.
23 When Ahithophel saw that his counsel was not acted upon, he saddled his ass and departed, going to his home in his own city. Then, having left orders concerning his family, he hanged himself. And so he died and was buried in his father's tomb.
24 Now David had gone to Mahanaim when Absalom crossed the Jordan accompanied by all the Israelites.
25 Absalom had put Amasa in command of the army in Joab's place. Amasa was the son of an Ishmaelite named Ithra, who had married Abigail, daughter of Jesse and sister of Joab's mother Zeruiah.
26 Israel and Absalom encamped in the territory of Gilead.
27 When David came to Mahanaim, Shobi, son of Nahash from Rabbah of the Ammonites, Machir, son of Ammiel from Lodebar, and Barzillai, the Gileadite from Rogelim,
28 brought couches, coverlets, basins and earthenware, as well as wheat, barley, flour, roasted grain, beans, lentils,
29 honey, butter and cheese from the flocks and herds, for David and those who were with him to eat; for they said, "The people have been hungry and tired and thirsty in the desert."
1 Moreover Ahithophel H302 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , Let me now H4994 IJEC choose out H977 VQI1MS twelve H8147 thousand H505 W-BMS men H376 NMS , and I will arise H6965 and pursue H7291 after H310 PREP David H1732 this night H3915 :
2 And I will come H935 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him while he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS is weary H3023 and weak H7504 handed H3027 NFD , and will make him afraid H2729 : and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are with H854 PREP-3MS him shall flee H5127 ; and I will smite H5221 the king H4428 D-NMS only H905 :
3 And I will bring back H7725 all H3605 NMS the people H5971 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee : the man H376 D-NMS whom H834 RPRO thou H859 PPRO-2MS seekest H1245 is as if all H3605 NMS returned H7725 : so all H3605 NMS the people H5971 shall be H1961 VQY3MS in peace H7965 .
4 And the saying H1697 D-NMS pleased H3474 Absalom H53 well H5869 B-CMP , and all H3605 NMS the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Absalom H53 , Call H7121 VQI2MP now H4994 IJEC Hushai H2365 the Archite H757 also H1571 CONJ , and let us hear H8085 likewise H1571 CONJ what H4100 IPRO he H1931 PPRO-3MS saith H6310 B-CMS-3MS .
6 And when Hushai H2365 was come H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Absalom H53 , Absalom H53 spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Ahithophel H302 hath spoken H1696 VPQ3MS after this H2088 D-PMS manner H1697 : shall we do H6213 after his saying H1697 ? if H518 PART not H369 ADV ; speak H1696 VPI2MS thou H859 PPRO-2MS .
7 And Hushai H2365 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Absalom H53 , The counsel H6098 that H834 RPRO Ahithophel H302 hath given H3289 is not H3808 ADV good H2896 NFS at this H2063 time H6471 .
8 For , said H559 W-VQY3MS Hushai H2365 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS thy father H1 NMS and his men H376 NMS , that H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP be mighty men H1368 , and they H1992 PPRO-3MP be chafed H4751 in their minds H5315 GFS , as a bear H1677 robbed of her whelps H7909 in the field H7704 B-NMS : and thy father H1 NMS is a man H376 NMS of war H4421 NFS , and will not H3808 W-NPAR lodge H3885 VQY3MS with H854 PREP the people H5971 D-NMS .
9 Behold H2009 IJEC , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is hid H2244 now H6258 ADV in some H259 B-RFS pit H6354 , or H176 CONJ in some H259 other place H4725 : and it will come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when some of them be overthrown H5307 at the first H8462 BD-NFS , that whosoever heareth H8085 it will say H559 , There is H1961 W-VQQ3MS a slaughter H4046 among the people H5971 that H834 RPRO follow H310 PREP Absalom H53 .
10 And he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS also H1571 CONJ that is valiant H1121 W-CMP , whose H834 RPRO heart H3820 CMS-3MS is as the heart H3820 of a lion H738 , shall utterly melt H4549 : for H3588 CONJ all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 knoweth H3045 VQPMS that H3588 CONJ thy father H1 NMS is a mighty man H1368 , and they which H834 RPRO be with H854 PREP-3MS him are valiant H2428 NMS men H1121 W-CMP .
11 Therefore H3588 CONJ I counsel H3289 that all H3605 CMS Israel H3478 be generally H622 gathered H622 VNY3MS unto H5921 PREP thee , from Dan H1835 even to H5704 W-PREP Beer H884 - sheba , as the sand H2344 that H834 RPRO is by H5921 PREP the sea H3220 D-NMS for multitude H7230 LD-NMS ; and that thou go H1980 to battle H7128 in thine own person H6440 .
12 So shall we come H935 upon H413 PREP-3MS him in some H259 place H4725 where H834 RPRO he shall be found H4672 VNQ3MS , and we will light H5117 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him as H834 RPRO the dew H2919 falleth H5307 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP-3MS the ground H127 D-NFS : and of him and of all H3605 WB-CMS the men H376 that H834 RPRO are with H854 PREP-3MS him there shall not H3808 W-NPAR be left H3498 so much H1571 CONJ as one H259 ONUM .
13 Moreover , if H518 W-PART he be gotten H622 into H413 PREP a city H5892 GFS , then shall all H3605 Israel H3478 bring H5375 ropes H2256 NMP to H413 PREP that H1931 city H5892 D-GFS , and we will draw H5498 it into H5704 PREP the river H5158 , until H5704 PREP there be not H3808 NADV one small H1571 CONJ stone H6872 found H4672 VNQ3MS there H8033 ADV .
14 And Absalom H53 and all H3605 W-CMS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS , The counsel H6098 CFS of Hushai H2365 the Archite H757 is better H2896 NFS than the counsel H6098 of Ahithophel H302 . For the LORD H3068 W-EDS had appointed H6680 VPQ3MS to defeat H6565 the good H2896 NFS counsel H6098 CFS of Ahithophel H302 , to the intent H5668 that the LORD H3068 EDS might bring H935 evil H7451 D-AFS upon H413 PREP Absalom H53 .
15 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Hushai H2365 unto H413 PREP Zadok H6659 and to H413 PREP Abiathar H54 the priests H3548 , Thus H2063 and thus H2063 did Ahithophel H302 counsel H3289 Absalom H53 and the elders H2205 of Israel H3478 ; and thus H2063 and thus H2063 have I H589 PPRO-1MS counseled H3289 .
16 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore send H7971 quickly H4120 , and tell H5046 David H1732 L-NAME , saying H559 L-VQFC , Lodge H3885 not H408 NPAR this night H3915 D-AMS in the plains H6160 of the wilderness H4057 D-NMS , but H1571 W-CONJ speedily H5674 pass over H5674 ; lest H6435 CONJ the king H4428 be swallowed up H1104 , and all H3605 the people H5971 that H834 RPRO are with H854 PREP-3MS him .
17 Now Jonathan H3083 and Ahimaaz H290 stayed H5975 VQPMP by En H5883 - rogel ; for H3588 CONJ they might H3201 not H3808 NADV be seen H7200 to come H935 L-VQFC into the city H5892 : and a wench H8198 went H1980 and told H5046 them ; and they H1992 W-PPRO-3MP went H1980 and told H5046 king H4428 David H1732 MMS .
18 Nevertheless a lad H5288 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS them , and told H5046 W-VHY3MS Absalom H53 : but they went H1980 W-VQY3MP both H8147 ONUM-3MP of them away quickly H4120 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP a man H376 NMS \'s house H1004 in Bahurim H980 , which had a well H875 in his court H2691 ; whither H8033 ADV they went down H3381 .
19 And the woman H802 D-NFS took H3947 W-VQY3FS and spread H6566 a covering H4539 over H5921 PREP the well H875 \'s mouth H6440 CMP , and spread H7849 ground corn H7383 thereon H5921 PREP ; and the thing H1697 was not H3808 W-NPAR known H3045 .
20 And when Absalom H53 \'s servants H5650 came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS to the house H1004 , they said H559 , Where H346 IGAT is Ahimaaz H290 and Jonathan H3083 ? And the woman H802 D-NFS said H559 W-VQY3FS unto them , They be gone over H5674 VQQ3MP the brook H4323 of water H4325 D-OMD . And when they had sought H1245 and could not H3808 W-NPAR find H4672 them , they returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to Jerusalem H3389 .
21 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , after H310 PREP they were departed H1980 , that they came up H5927 out of the well H875 , and went H1980 W-VQY3MP and told H5046 king H4428 David H1732 MMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP David H1732 MMS , Arise H6965 , and pass quickly over H5674 the water H4325 D-CMS : for H3588 CONJ thus H3602 hath Ahithophel H302 counseled H3289 against H5921 PREP-2MP you .
22 Then David H1732 MMS arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , and they passed over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS : by H5704 PREP the morning H1242 light H216 NMS there lacked H5737 not H3808 NADV one H259 of them that H834 RPRO was not H3808 NADV gone over H5674 VQQ3MS Jordan H3383 .
23 And when Ahithophel H302 saw H7200 VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ his counsel H6098 was not H3808 NADV followed H6213 , he saddled H2280 his ass H2543 , and arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and got H1980 W-VQY3MS him home to H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , to H413 PREP his city H5892 , and put H6680 W-VPY3MS his household H1004 NMS-3MS in order , and hanged himself H2614 , and died H4191 W-VQY3MS , and was buried H6912 in the sepulcher H6913 of his father H1 .
24 Then David H1732 came H935 VQPMS to Mahanaim H4266 . And Absalom H53 passed over H5674 VQQ3MS Jordan H3383 D-EFS , he H1931 PPRO-3MS and all H3605 W-CMS the men H376 NMS of Israel H3478 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
25 And Absalom H53 made H7760 VQQ3MS Amasa H6021 captain H5921 PREP of the host H6635 instead H8478 NMS of Joab H3097 : which Amasa H6021 was a man H376 NMS \'s son H1121 CMS , whose name H8034 was Ithra H3501 an Israelite H3481 , that H834 RPRO went H935 VQPMS in to H413 PREP Abigail H26 the daughter H1323 CFS of Nahash H5176 , sister H269 to Zeruiah H6870 Joab H3097 \'s mother H517 GFS .
26 So Israel H3478 and Absalom H53 pitched H2583 in the land H776 GFS of Gilead H1568 .
27 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when David H1732 was come H935 K-VQFC to Mahanaim H4266 , that Shobi H7629 the son H1121 CMS of Nahash H5176 of Rabbah H7237 of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , and Machir H4353 the son H1121 CMS of Ammiel H5988 of Lo H3810 - debar , and Barzillai H1271 the Gileadite H1569 of Rogelim H7274 ,
28 Brought H5066 beds H4904 , and basins H5592 , and earthen H3335 vessels H3627 , and wheat H2406 , and barley H8184 , and flour H7058 , and parched H7039 corn , and beans H6321 , and lentils H5742 , and parched H7039 pulse ,
29 And honey H1706 , and butter H2529 , and sheep H6629 , and cheese H8194 of kine H1241 NMS , for David H1732 L-NAME , and for the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H854 PREP-3MS him , to eat H398 : for H3588 CONJ they said H559 VQQ3MP , The people H5971 is hungry H7457 AMS , and weary H5889 , and thirsty H6771 , in the wilderness H4057 .
