Exodus 32:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 When the people became aware of Moses' delay in coming down from the mountain, they gathered around Aaron and said to him, "Come, make us a god who will be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him."
2 Aaron replied, "Have your wives and sons and daughters take off the golden earrings they are wearing, and bring them to me."
3 So all the people took off their earrings and brought them to Aaron,
4 who accepted their offering, and fashioning this gold with a graving tool, made a molten calf. Then they cried out, "This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt."
5 On seeing this, Aaron built an altar before the calf and proclaimed, "Tomorrow is a feast of the LORD."
6 Early the next day the people offered holocausts and brought peace offerings. Then they sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to revel.
7 With that, the LORD said to Moses, "Go down at once to your people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt, for they have become depraved.
8 They have soon turned aside from the way I pointed out to them, making for themselves a molten calf and worshiping it, sacrificing to it and crying out, 'This is your God, O Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt!'
9 I see how stiff-necked this people is," continued the LORD to Moses.
10 "Let me alone, then, that my wrath may blaze up against them to consume them. Then I will make of you a great nation."
11 But Moses implored the LORD, his God, saying, "Why, O LORD, should your wrath blaze up against your own people, whom you brought out of the land of Egypt with such great power and with so strong a hand?
12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'With evil intent he brought them out, that he might kill them in the mountains and exterminate them from the face of the earth'? Let your blazing wrath die down; relent in punishing your people.
13 Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Israel, and how you swore to them by your own self, saying, 'I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky; and all this land that I promised, I will give your descendants as their perpetual heritage.'"
14 So the LORD relented in the punishment he had threatened to inflict on his people.
15 Moses then turned and came down the mountain with the two tablets of the commandments in his hands, tablets that were written on both sides, front and back;
16 tablets that were made by God, having inscriptions on them that were engraved by God himself.
17 Now, when Joshua heard the noise of the people shouting, he said to Moses, "That sounds like a battle in the camp."
18 But Moses answered, "It does not sound like cries of victory, nor does it sound like cries of defeat; the sounds that I hear are cries of revelry."
19 As he drew near the camp, he saw the calf and the dancing. With that, Moses' wrath flared up, so that he threw the tablets down and broke them on the base of the mountain.
20 Taking the calf they had made, he fused it in the fire and then ground it down to powder, which he scattered on the water and made the Israelites drink.
21 Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people ever do to you that you should lead them into so grave a sin?" Aaron replied, "Let not my lord be angry.
22 You know well enough how prone the people are to evil.
23 They said to me, 'Make us a god to be our leader; as for the man Moses who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'
24 So I told them, 'Let anyone who has gold jewelry take it off.' They gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out."
25 When Moses realized that, to the scornful joy of their foes, Aaron had let the people run wild,
26 he stood at the gate of the camp and cried, "Whoever is for the LORD, let him come to me!" All the Levites then rallied to him,
27 and he told them, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Put your sword on your hip, every one of you! Now go up and down the camp, from gate to gate, and slay your own kinsmen, your friends and neighbors!"
28 The Levites carried out the command of Moses, and that day there fell about three thousand of the people.
29 Then Moses said, "Today you have been dedicated to the LORD, for you were against your own sons and kinsmen, to bring a blessing upon yourselves this day."
30 On the next day Moses said to the people, "You have committed a grave sin. I will go up to the LORD, then; perhaps I may be able to make atonement for your sin."
31 So Moses went back to the LORD and said, "Ah, this people has indeed committed a grave sin in making a god of gold for themselves!
32 If you would only forgive their sin! If you will not, then strike me out of the book that you have written."
33 The LORD answered, "Him only who has sinned against me will I strike out of my book.
34 Now, go and lead the people whither I have told you. My angel will go before you. When it is time for me to punish, I will punish them for their sin."
35 Thus the LORD smote the people for having had Aaron make the calf for them.

2 And Aaron H175 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Break off H6561 the golden H2091 earrings H5141 , which H834 RPRO are in the ears H241 of your wives H802 , of your sons H1121 , and of your daughters H1323 , and bring H935 them unto H413 me .
3 And all H3605 NMS the people H5971 broke off H6561 the golden H2091 earrings H5141 which H834 RPRO were in their ears H241 , and brought H935 them unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 .
4 And he received H3947 W-VQY3MS them at their hand H3027 , and fashioned H6696 it with a graving tool H2747 , after he had made H6213 it a molten H4541 calf H5695 : and they said H559 W-VQY3MP , These H428 PMP be thy gods H430 CMP-2MS , O Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO brought thee up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 .
5 And when Aaron H175 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS it , he built H1129 W-VQY3MS an altar H4196 NMS before H6440 L-CMP-3MS it ; and Aaron H175 made proclamation H7121 W-VQY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Tomorrow H4279 is a feast H2282 to the LORD H3068 L-EDS .
6 And they rose up early H7925 on the morrow H4283 , and offered H5927 burnt offerings H5930 NFP , and brought H5066 peace offerings H8002 ; and the people H5971 sat down H3427 W-VQY3MS to eat H398 and to drink H8354 , and rose up H6965 to play H6711 .
7 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Go H1980 L-PPRO-2MS , get thee down H3381 ; for H3588 CONJ thy people H5971 , which H834 RPRO thou broughtest H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 , have corrupted H7843 themselves :
8 They have turned aside H5493 VQQ3MP quickly H4118 out of H4480 PREP the way H1870 D-NMS which H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 them : they have made H6213 VQQ3MP them a molten H4541 calf H5695 , and have worshiped H7812 it , and have sacrificed H2076 thereunto , and said H559 W-VQY3MP , These H428 PMP be thy gods H430 CMP-2MS , O Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO have brought thee up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 .
9 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , I have seen H7200 VQQ1MS this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , and , behold H2009 IJEC , it H1931 PPRO-3MS is a stiffnecked H7186 people H5971 NMS :
10 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore let me alone H5117 , that my wrath H639 CMS-1MS may wax hot H2734 against them , and that I may consume H3615 them : and I will make H6213 of thee a great H1419 nation H1471 L-NMS .
11 And Moses H4872 besought H2470 the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 CMP-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , LORD H3068 EDS , why H4100 L-IGAT doth thy wrath H639 wax hot H2734 against thy people H5971 , which H834 RPRO thou hast brought forth H3318 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS with great H1419 AMS power H3581 B-NMS , and with a mighty H2389 hand H3027 ?
12 Wherefore H4100 L-IPRO should the Egyptians H4714 speak H559 VQY3MP , and say H559 L-VQFC , For mischief H7451 did he bring them out H3318 , to slay H2026 them in the mountains H2022 , and to consume H3615 them from M-PREP the face H6440 CMP of the earth H127 D-NFS ? Turn H7725 VQFC from thy fierce wrath H2740 M-CMS , and repent H5162 of H5921 M-PREP this evil H7451 D-AFS against thy people H5971 .
13 Remember H2142 VQI2MS Abraham H85 , Isaac H3327 , and Israel H3478 , thy servants H5650 , to whom H834 RPRO thou sworest H7650 by thine own self , and saidst H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS them , I will multiply H7235 VHY1MS your seed H2233 CMS-2MP as the stars H3556 of heaven H8064 D-AMP , and all H3605 W-CMS this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS that H834 RPRO I have spoken H559 VQQ1MS of will I give H5414 VQY1MS unto your seed H2233 , and they shall inherit H5157 it forever H5769 L-NMS .
14 And the LORD H3068 EDS repented H5162 W-VNY3MS of H5921 PREP the evil H7451 D-AFS which H834 RPRO he thought H1696 VPQ3MS to do H6213 L-VQFC unto his people H5971 .
15 And Moses H4872 turned H6437 , and went down H3381 W-VQY3MS from H4480 PREP the mount H2022 , and the two H8147 tables H3871 of the testimony H5715 were in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS : the tables H3871 were written H3789 on both H8147 their sides H5676 ; on the one side H2088 M-DPRO and on the other H2088 were they H1992 PPRO-3MP written H3789 .
16 And the tables H3871 were the work H4639 M-CMS of God H430 EDP , and the writing H4385 was the writing H4385 of God H430 EDP , graven H2801 upon H5921 PREP the tables H3871 .
17 And when Joshua H3091 heard H8085 the noise H6963 CMS of the people H5971 as they shouted H7452 , he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , There is a noise H6963 CMS of war H4421 NFS in the camp H4264 .
18 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , It is not H369 NPAR the voice H6963 CMS of them that shout H6030 for mastery H1369 NFS , neither H369 W-NPAR is it the voice H6963 CMS of them that cry H6030 for being overcome H2476 : but the noise H6963 CMS of them that sing H6031 do I H595 PPRO-1MS hear H8085 .
19 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS , as soon as H834 K-RPRO he came nigh H7126 unto H413 PREP the camp H4264 , that he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS the calf H5695 , and the dancing H4246 : and Moses H4872 \' anger H639 CMS waxed hot H2734 , and he cast H7993 the tables H3871 out of his hands H3027 , and broke H7665 them beneath H8478 NMS the mount H2022 .
20 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS the calf H5695 which H834 RPRO they had made H6213 VQQ3MP , and burnt H8313 it in the fire H784 , and ground H2912 it to H5704 PREP powder H1854 , and strewed H2219 it upon H5921 PREP the water H4325 D-CMS , and made the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS drink H8248 of it .
21 And Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Aaron H175 , What H4100 did H6213 VQQ3MS this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 unto thee , that H3588 CONJ thou hast brought H935 so great H1419 a sin H2401 upon H5921 PREP-3MS them ?
22 And Aaron H175 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let not H408 NPAR the anger H639 CMS of my lord H113 wax hot H2734 : thou H859 PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS the people H5971 , that H3588 CONJ they H1931 PPRO-3MS are set on mischief H7451 .
23 For they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto me , Make H6213 VQI2MS us gods H430 EDP , which H834 RPRO shall go H1980 before H6440 us : for H3588 CONJ as for this H2088 DPRO Moses H4872 , the man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO brought us up H5927 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 EFS , we know H3045 not H3808 NADV what H4100 IPRO is become H1961 VQQ3MS of him .
24 And I said H559 W-VQY1MS unto them , Whosoever H4310 L-IPRO hath any gold H2091 NMS , let them break it off H6561 . So they gave H5414 W-VQY3MP it me : then I cast H7993 it into the fire H784 , and there came out H3318 W-VQY3MS this H2088 D-PMS calf H5695 .
25 And when Moses H4872 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that CONJ the people H5971 were naked H6544 ; ( CONJ for CONJ Aaron H175 had made them naked H6544 unto their shame H8103 among their enemies H6965 : )
26 Then Moses H4872 stood H5975 W-VQY3MS in the gate H8179 of the camp H4264 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Who H4310 IPRO is on the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s side ? let him come unto H413 me . And all H3605 NMS the sons H1121 of Levi H3878 gathered themselves together H622 unto H413 PREP-3MS him .
27 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Put H7760 every man H376 NMS his sword H2719 by H5921 PREP his side H3409 , and go in H5674 and out H7725 from gate H8179 to gate H8179 throughout the camp H4264 , and slay H2026 every man H376 NMS his brother H251 CMS-3MS , and every man H376 NMS his companion H7453 NMS-3MS , and every man H376 NMS his neighbor H7138 .
28 And the children H1121 of Levi H3878 did H6213 according to the word H1697 K-NMS of Moses H4872 : and there fell H5307 W-VQY3MS of H4480 PREP the people H5971 that H1931 D-PPRO-3MS day H3117 B-AMS about three H7969 thousand H505 BMP men H376 NMS .
29 For Moses H4872 had said H559 W-VQY3MS , Consecrate H3027 yourselves today H3117 D-AMS to the LORD H3068 L-EDS , even H3588 CONJ every man H376 NMS upon his son H1121 , and upon his brother H251 ; that he may bestow H5414 upon H5921 PREP-2MP you a blessing H1293 NFS this day H3117 D-AMS .
30 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS on the morrow H4283 , that Moses H4872 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the people H5971 , Ye H859 PPRO-2MS have sinned H2398 a great H1419 sin H2401 : and now H6258 W-ADV I will go up H5927 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS ; peradventure H194 ADV I shall make an atonement H3722 for H1157 PREP your sin H2403 .
31 And Moses H4872 returned H7725 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Oh H577 , this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 have sinned H2398 VQQ3MS a great H1419 sin H2401 , and have made H6213 them gods H430 CDP of gold H2091 .
32 Yet now H6258 W-ADV , if H518 PART thou wilt forgive H5375 VQY2MS their sin H2403 ; and if H518 PART not H369 ADV , blot H4229 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , out of thy book H5612 which H834 RPRO thou hast written H3789 .
33 And the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , Whosoever H834 RPRO hath sinned H2398 against me , him will I blot out H4229 of my book H5612 .
34 Therefore now H6258 W-ADV go H1980 VQI2MS , lead H5148 the people H5971 unto H413 PREP the place of which H834 RPRO I have spoken H1696 VPQ1MS unto thee : behold H2009 IJEC , mine Angel H4397 shall go H1980 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee : nevertheless in the day H3117 when I visit H6485 I will visit H6485 their sin H2403 upon H5921 PREP-3MP them .
35 And the LORD H3068 EDS plagued H5062 the people H5971 , because H5921 PREP they made H6213 VQQ3MP the calf H5695 , which H834 RPRO Aaron H175 made H6213 VQQ3MS .
