2 Chronicles 34:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 Josiah was eight years old when he became king, and he reigned thirty-one years in Jerusalem.
2 He pleased the LORD, following the path of his ancestor David.
3 In the eighth year of his reign, while he was still a youth, he began to seek after the God of his forefather David, and in his twelfth year he began to purge Judah and Jerusalem of the high places, the sacred poles and the carved and molten images.
4 In his presence, the altars of the Baals were destroyed; the incense stands erected above them were torn down; the sacred poles and the carved and molten images were shattered and beaten into dust, which was strewn over the tombs of those who had sacrificed to them;
5 and the bones of the priests he burned upon their altars. Thus he purged Judah and Jerusalem.
6 He did likewise in the cities of Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, and in the ruined villages of the surrounding country as far as Naphtali;
7 he destroyed the altars, broke up the sacred poles and carved images and beat them into dust, and tore down the incense stands throughout the land of Israel. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
8 In the eighteenth year of his reign, in order to cleanse the temple as well as the land, he sent Shaphan, son of Azaliah, Maaseiah, the ruler of the city, and Joah, son of Joahaz, the chamberlain, to restore the house of the LORD, his God.
9 They came to Hilkiah the high priest and turned over the money brought to the house of God which the Levites, the guardians of the threshold, had collected from Manasseh, Ephraim, and all the remnant of Israel, as well as from all of Judah, Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
10 They turned it over to the master workmen in the house of the LORD, and these in turn used it to pay the workmen in the LORD'S house who were restoring and repairing the temple.
11 They also gave it to the carpenters and the masons to buy hewn stone and timber for the tie beams and rafters of the buildings which the kings of Judah had allowed to fall into ruin.
12 The men worked faithfully at their task; their overseers were Jahath and Obadiah, Levites of the line of Merari, and Zechariah and Meshullam, of the Kohathites, who directed them. All those Levites who were skillful with musical instruments
13 were in charge of the men who carried the burdens, and they directed all the workers in every kind of labor. Some of the other Levites were scribes, officials and gatekeepers.
14 When they brought out the money that had been deposited in the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found the book of the law of the LORD given through Moses.
15 He reported this to Shaphan the scribe, saying, "I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD." Hilkiah gave the book to Shaphan,
16 who brought it to the king at the same time that he was making his report to him. He said, "Your servants are doing everything that has been entrusted to them;
17 they have turned into bullion the metals deposited in the LORD'S house and have handed it over to the overseers and the workmen."
18 Then Shaphan the scribe announced to the king, "Hilkiah the priest has given me a book." And Shaphan read from it before the king.
19 When the king heard the words of the law, he tore his garments
20 and issued this command to Hilkiah, to Ahikam, son of Shaphan, to Abdon, son of Michah, to Shaphan the scribe, and to Asaiah, the king's servant:
21 "On behalf of myself and those who are left in Israel and Judah, go, consult the LORD concerning the words of the book that has been found. For the anger of the LORD has been set furiously ablaze against us, since our fathers have not kept the word of the LORD and have not done all that is written in this book."
22 Then Hilkiah and the other men from the king went to the prophetess Huldah, the wife of Shallum, son of Tokhath, son of Hasrah, the guardian of the wardrobe; she dwelt in Jerusalem, in the new quarter. They spoke to her as they had been instructed,
23 and she said to them: "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: 'Tell the one who sent you to me,
24 The LORD says: I am prepared to bring evil upon this place and upon its inhabitants, all the curses written in the book that has been read before the king of Judah.
25 Because they have abandoned me and have offered incense to other gods, provoking me by every deed that they have performed, my anger is ablaze against this place and cannot be extinguished.'
26 "But to the king of Judah who sent you to consult the LORD, give this response: 'Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the threats you have heard:
27 Because you were heartsick and have humbled yourself before God on hearing his words spoken against this place and its inhabitants; because you have humbled yourself before me, have torn your garments, and have wept before me, I in turn have listened-- so declares the LORD.
28 I will gather you to your ancestors and you shall be taken to your grave in peace. Your eyes shall not see all the evil I will bring upon this place and upon its inhabitants.'" They brought back this message to the king.
29 The king now convened all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
30 He went up to the house of the LORD with all the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the priests, the Levites, and all the people, great and small; and he had read aloud to them the entire text of the book of the covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
31 Standing at his post, the king made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep his commandments, decrees, and statutes with his whole heart and soul, thus observing the terms of the covenant written in this book.
32 He thereby committed all who were of Jerusalem and Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem conformed themselves to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers.
33 Josiah removed every abominable thing from all the territory belonging to the Israelites, and he obliged all who were in Israel to serve the LORD, their God. During his lifetime they did not desert the LORD, the God of their fathers.

2 And he did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , and walked H1980 W-VQY3MS in the ways H1870 of David H1732 his father H1 CMS-3MS , and declined H5493 neither to the right hand H3225 NFS , nor to the left H8040 .
3 For in the eighth H8083 year H8141 NFP of his reign H4427 , while he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was yet H5750 young H5288 , he began H2490 VHQ3MS to seek H1875 after the God H430 of David H1732 his father H1 CMS-3MS : and in the twelfth H8147 year H8141 NFS he began H2490 VHQ3MS to purge H2891 Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 from H4480 PREP the high places H1116 , and the groves H842 , and the carved images H6456 , and the molten images H4541 .
4 And they broke down H5422 the altars H4196 of Baalim H1168 in his presence H6440 CMP ; and the images H2553 , that H834 RPRO were on high H4605 above H5921 PREP them , he cut down H1438 ; and the groves H842 , and the carved images H6456 , and the molten images H4541 , he broke in pieces H7665 , and made dust H1854 of them , and strewed H2236 it upon H5921 PREP the graves H6913 of them that had sacrificed H2076 unto them .
5 And he burnt H8313 the bones H6106 of the priests H3548 upon H5921 PREP their altars H4196 , and cleansed H2891 Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 .
6 And so did he in the cities H5892 of Manasseh H4519 , and Ephraim H669 , and Simeon H8095 , even unto H5704 W-PREP Naphtali H5321 , with their mattocks H2719 round about H5439 .
7 And when he had broken down H5422 the altars H4196 and the groves H842 , and had beaten H3807 the graven images H6456 into powder H1854 , and cut down H1438 all H3605 W-CMS the idols H2553 throughout all H3605 B-CMS the land H776 GFS of Israel H3478 , he returned H7725 to Jerusalem H3389 .
8 Now in the eighteenth H8083 year H8141 of his reign H4427 , when he had purged H2891 the land H776 D-GFS , and the house H1004 , he sent H7971 VQQ3MS Shaphan H8227 the son H1121 of Azaliah H683 , and Maaseiah H4641 the governor H8269 of the city H5892 D-GFS , and Joah H3098 the son H1121 of Joahaz H3099 the recorder H2142 , to repair H2388 the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS his God H430 .
9 And when they came H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP Hilkiah H2518 the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 , they delivered H5414 the money H3701 that was brought into H935 the house H1004 CMS of God H430 EDP , which H834 RPRO the Levites H3881 that kept H8104 the doors H5592 had gathered H622 of the hand H3027 M-GFS of Manasseh H4519 and Ephraim H669 , and of all H3605 WM-CMS the remnant H7611 of Israel H3478 , and of all H3605 WM-CMS Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 ; and they returned H7725 to Jerusalem H3389 .
10 And they put H5414 it in H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of the workmen H6213 that had the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and they gave H5414 W-VQY3MP it to the workmen H6213 that H834 RPRO wrought H6213 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , to repair H918 and amend H2388 the house H1004 :
11 Even to the artificers H2796 and builders H1129 gave H5414 they it , to buy H7069 hewn H4274 stone H68 CMP , and timber H6086 for couplings H4226 , and to floor H7136 the houses H1004 which H834 RPRO the kings H4428 CMP of Judah H3063 had destroyed H7843 .
12 And the men H376 did H6213 the work H4399 faithfully H530 : and the overseers H5329 of H5921 them were Jahath H3189 and Obadiah H5662 , the Levites H3881 , of H4480 PREP the sons H1121 of Merari H4847 ; and Zechariah H2148 and Meshullam H4918 , of H4480 PREP the sons H1121 of the Kohathites H6956 , to set it forward H6485 ; and other of the Levites H3881 , all H3605 NMS that could skill H995 of instruments H3627 of music H7892 .
13 Also they were over H5921 W-PREP the bearers of burdens H5449 , and were overseers H5329 of all H3605 that wrought H6213 the work H4399 in any manner of service H5656 : and of H4480 the Levites H3881 there were scribes H5608 , and officers H7860 , and porters H7778 .
14 And when they brought out H3318 the money H3701 that was brought into H935 the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 found H4672 VQPMS a book H5612 CMS of the law H8451 of the LORD H3068 EDS given by H3027 B-CFS Moses H4872 .
15 And Hilkiah H2518 answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , I have found H4672 VQQ1MS the book H5612 CMS of the law H8451 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS . And Hilkiah H2518 delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS the book H5612 to H413 PREP Shaphan H8227 .
16 And Shaphan H8227 carried H935 W-VHY3MS the book H5612 to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , and brought H7725 W-VHY3MS the king H4428 D-NMS word H1697 VQPMS back again H5750 ADV , saying H559 L-VQFC , All H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO was committed H5414 to thy servants H3027 B-CFS , they H1992 PPRO-3MP do H6213 it .
17 And they have gathered together H5413 the money H3701 that was found H4672 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and have delivered H5414 it into H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of the overseers H6485 , and to H5921 PREP the hand H3027 CFS of the workmen H6213 .
18 Then Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 told H5046 W-VHY3MS the king H4428 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Hilkiah H2518 the priest H3548 hath given H5414 VQQ3MS me a book H5612 CMS . And Shaphan H8227 read H7121 W-VQY3MS it before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 .
19 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the king H4428 D-NMS had heard H8085 the words H1697 CMP of the law H8451 , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 .
20 And the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 W-VPY3MS Hilkiah H2518 , and Ahikam H296 the son H1121 of Shaphan H8227 , and Abdon H5658 the son H1121 of Micah H4318 , and Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , and Asaiah H6222 a servant H5650 of the king H4428 D-NMS \'s , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
21 Go H1980 VQI2MP , inquire of the LORD H3068 EDS for H1157 W-PREP me , and for H1157 W-PREP them that are left H7604 in Israel H3478 and in Judah H3063 , concerning H5921 PREP the words H1697 CMP of the book H5612 that H834 RPRO is found H4672 VNQ3MS : for H3588 CONJ great H1419 AFS is the wrath H2534 of the LORD H3068 EDS that H834 RPRO is poured out H5413 upon us , because H5921 PREP our fathers H1 have not H3808 NADV kept H8104 the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , to do H6213 L-VQFC after all H3605 that is written H3789 in H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS book H5612 .
22 And Hilkiah H2518 , and they that H834 W-RPRO the king H4428 D-NMS had appointed , went H1980 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Huldah H2468 the prophetess H5031 , the wife H802 CFS of Shallum H7967 the son H1121 of Tikvath H8616 , the son H1121 of Hasrah H2641 , keeper H8104 of the wardrobe H899 ; (now she H1931 dwelt H3427 in Jerusalem H3389 in the college H4932 : ) and they spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP to H413 PREP her to that H2063 effect .
23 And she answered H559 W-VQY3FS them , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , Tell H559 ye the man H376 LD-NMS that H834 RPRO sent H7971 VQQ3MS you to H413 me ,
24 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Behold H2009 , I will bring H935 VHPMS evil H7451 AFS upon H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and upon H5921 PREP the inhabitants H3427 thereof , even all H3605 NMS the curses H423 that are written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 which H834 RPRO they have read H7121 before H6440 L-CMP the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 :
25 Because H8478 NMS they have forsaken H5800 me , and have burned incense H6999 unto other H312 AMP gods H430 L-NMP , that H4616 L-CONJ they might provoke me to anger H3707 with all H3605 the works H4639 of their hands H3027 CFD-3MP ; therefore my wrath H2534 shall be poured out H5413 upon this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 , and shall not H3808 W-NPAR be quenched H3518 .
26 And as for H413 W-PREP the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , who sent H7971 you to inquire H1875 of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS , so H3541 shall ye say H559 VQY2MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 concerning the words H1697 AMP which H834 RPRO thou hast heard H8085 ;
27 Because H3282 ADV thine heart H3824 was tender H7401 , and thou didst humble thyself H3665 before H6440 ML-CMP God H430 EDP , when thou heardest H8085 VQQ1MS his words H1697 CMP-3MS against H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and against H5921 PREP the inhabitants H3427 thereof , and humbledst thyself H3665 before H6440 L-CMP me , and didst rend H7167 thy clothes H899 CMP-2MS , and weep H1058 before H6440 me ; I H589 PPRO-1MS have even heard H8085 VQQ1MS thee also H1571 W-CONJ , saith H5002 the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
28 Behold H2009 , I will gather H622 thee to H413 PREP thy fathers H1 , and thou shalt be gathered H622 to H413 PREP thy grave H6913 in peace H7965 , neither H3808 W-NPAR shall thine eyes H5869 CMD-2MS see H7200 all H3605 the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS will bring H935 VHPMS upon H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS place H4725 D-NMS , and upon H5921 PREP the inhabitants H3427 of the same . So they brought H7725 the king H4428 D-NMS word H1697 again .
29 Then the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS and gathered together H622 all H3605 NMS the elders H2205 of Judah H3063 and Jerusalem H3389 .
30 And the king H4428 D-NMS went up H5927 W-VHY3MS into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and all H3605 NMS the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 , and the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 , and the priests H3548 , and the Levites H3881 , and all H3605 NMS the people H5971 , great H1419 and small H6996 : and he read H7121 W-VQY3MS in their ears H241 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of the book H5612 CMS of the covenant H1285 D-NFS that was found H4672 in the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
31 And the king H4428 D-NMS stood H5975 W-VQY3MS in H5921 PREP his place H5977 , and made H3772 a covenant H1285 D-NFS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , to walk H1980 L-VQFC after H310 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and to keep H8104 his commandments H4687 , and his testimonies H5715 , and his statutes H2706 , with all H3605 B-CMS his heart H3824 , and with all H3605 WB-CMS his soul H5315 NMS-3MS , to perform H6213 L-VQFC the words H1697 CMP of the covenant H1285 D-NFS which are written H3789 in H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS book H5612 .
32 And he caused all H3605 NMS that were present H4672 in Jerusalem H3389 and Benjamin H1144 to stand H5975 W-VHY3MS to it . And the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 did H6213 W-EMS according to the covenant H1285 of God H430 EDP , the God H430 NAME-4MP of their fathers H1 .
33 And Josiah H2977 took away H5493 W-VHY3MS all H3605 NMS the abominations H8441 out of H4480 all H3605 NMS the countries H776 that H834 RPRO pertained to the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 , and made all H3605 NMS that were present H4672 in Israel H3478 to serve H5647 , even to serve H5647 the LORD H3068 EDS their God H430 . And all H3605 NMS his days H3117 CMP-3MS they departed H5493 VQQ3MP not H3808 NADV from following H310 the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of their fathers H1 .
