Matthew 2:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem,
2 saying, "Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage."
3 When King Herod heard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
4 Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.
5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written through the prophet:
6 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come a ruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel.'"
7 Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star's appearance.
8 He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring me word, that I too may go and do him homage."
9 After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.
10 They were overjoyed at seeing the star,
11 and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.
13 When they had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him."
14 Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt.
15 He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
16 When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi.
17 Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:
18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, sobbing and loud lamentation; Rachel weeping for her children, and she would not be consoled, since they were no more."
19 When Herod had died, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt
20 and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."
21 He rose, took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel.
22 But when he heard that Archelaus was ruling over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go back there. And because he had been warned in a dream, he departed for the region of Galilee.
23 He went and dwelt in a town called Nazareth, so that what had been spoken through the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazorean."

2 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Where G4226 PRT-I is G2076 V-PXI-3S he that is born G5088 V-APP-NSM King G935 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Jews G2453 A-GPM ? for G1063 CONJ we have seen G1492 V-2AAI-1P his G3588 T-ASM star G792 N-ASM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF east G395 N-DSF , and G2532 CONJ are come G2064 V-2AAI-1P to worship G4352 V-AAN him G846 P-DSM .
3 When G1161 CONJ Herod G2264 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM king G935 N-NSM had heard G191 V-AAP-NSM these things , he was troubled G5015 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-NSF Jerusalem G2414 N-NSF with G3326 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
4 And G2532 CONJ when he had gathered G4863 V-2AAP-NSM all G3956 A-APM the G3588 T-APM chief priests G749 N-APM and G2532 CONJ scribes G1122 N-APM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM people G2992 N-GSM together , he demanded G4441 V-INI-3S of G3844 PREP them G846 P-GPM where G3588 T-NSM Christ G5547 N-NSM should be born G1080 V-PPI-3S .
5 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , In G1722 PREP Bethlehem G965 N-PRI of Judea G2449 N-GSF : for G1063 CONJ thus G3779 ADV it is written G1125 V-RPI-3S by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM ,
6 And G2532 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS Bethlehem G965 N-PRI , in the land G1093 N-VSF of Judah G2448 N-GSM , art G1488 V-PXI-2S not G3760 ADV the least G1646 A-NSF among G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPM princes G2232 N-DPM of Judah G2448 N-GSM : for G1063 CONJ out G1537 PREP of thee G4675 P-2GS shall come G1831 V-FDI-3S a Governor G2233 V-PNP-NSM , that G3748 R-NSM shall rule G4165 V-FAI-3S my G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM Israel G2474 N-PRI .
7 Then G5119 ADV Herod G2264 N-NSM , when he had privily G2977 ADV called G2564 V-AAP-NSM the G3588 T-APM wise men G3097 N-APM , inquired of G3588 T-ASM them G3588 T-ASM diligently G198 V-AAI-3S what time G5550 N-ASM the G3588 T-ASM star G792 N-GSM appeared G5316 V-PEP-GSM .
8 And G2532 CONJ he sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM them G846 P-APM to G1519 PREP Bethlehem G965 N-PRI , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Go G4198 V-AOP-NPM and search G1833 V-AAM-2P diligently G199 ADV for G4012 PREP the G3588 T-GSN young child G3813 N-GSN ; and G1161 CONJ when G1875 CONJ ye have found G2147 V-2AAS-2P him , bring me word again G518 V-AAM-2P , that G3704 ADV I G2504 P-1NS-C may come G2064 V-2AAP-NSM and worship G4352 V-AAS-1S him G846 P-DSM also .
9 When G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM had heard G191 V-AAP-NPM the G3588 T-GSM king G935 N-GSM , they departed G4198 V-AOI-3P ; and G2532 CONJ , lo G2400 V-2AAM-2S , the G3588 T-NSM star G792 N-NSM , which G3739 R-ASM they saw G1492 V-2AAI-3P in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF east G395 N-DSF , went before G4254 V-IAI-3S them G846 P-APM , till G2193 CONJ it came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM and stood G2476 V-2AAI-3S over G1883 ADV where G3757 ADV the G3588 T-NSN young child G3813 N-NSN was G2258 V-IXI-3S .
10 When G1161 CONJ they saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASM star G792 N-ASM , they rejoiced G5463 V-2AOI-3P with exceeding G4970 ADV great G3173 A-ASF joy G5479 N-ASF .
11 And G2532 CONJ when they were come G2064 V-2AAP-NPM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF house G3614 N-ASF , they saw G1492 the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN with G3326 PREP Mary G3137 N-GSF his G3588 T-GSF mother G3384 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ fell down G4098 V-2AAP-NPM , and worshiped G4352 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM : and G2532 CONJ when they had opened G455 V-AAP-NPM their G3588 T-APM treasures G2344 N-APM , they presented G4374 V-AAI-3P unto him G846 P-GPM gifts G1435 N-APN ; gold G5557 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ frankincense G3030 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ myrrh G4666 N-ASF .
12 And G2532 CONJ being warned of God G5537 V-APP-NPM in G2596 PREP a dream G3677 N-OI that they should not G3361 PRT-N return G344 V-AAN to G4314 PREP Herod G2264 N-ASM , they departed G402 V-AAI-3P into G1519 PREP their own G848 country another G243 A-GSF way G3598 N-GSF .
13 And G1161 CONJ when they G846 P-GPM were departed G402 V-AAP-GPM , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , the angel G32 N-NSM of the Lord G2962 N-GSM appeareth G5316 V-PEI-3S to Joseph G2501 N-PRI in G2596 PREP a dream G3677 N-OI , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Arise G1453 V-APP-NSM , and take G3880 V-2AAM-2S the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-ASF mother G3384 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ flee G5343 V-PAM-2S into G1519 PREP Egypt G125 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ be G2468 V-PXM-2S thou there G1563 ADV until G2193 CONJ I bring thee word G2036 V-2AAS-1S : for G1063 CONJ Herod G2264 N-NSM will G3195 V-PAI-3S seek G2212 V-PAN the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN to destroy G622 V-AAN him G846 P-ASN .
14 When G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM arose G1453 V-APP-NSM , he took G3880 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-ASF mother G3384 N-ASF by night G3571 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ departed G402 V-AAI-3S into G1519 PREP Egypt G125 N-ASF :
15 And G2532 CONJ was G2258 V-IXI-3S there G1563 ADV until G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-GSF death G5054 N-GSF of Herod G2264 N-GSM : that G2443 CONJ it might be fulfilled G4137 V-APS-3S which G3588 T-NSN was spoken G4483 V-APP-NSN of G5259 PREP the G3588 T-GSM Lord G2962 N-GSM by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-GSN , Out G1537 PREP of Egypt G125 N-GSF have I called G2564 V-AAI-1S my G3588 T-ASM son G5207 N-ASM .
16 Then G5119 ADV Herod G2264 N-NSM , when he saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ he was mocked G1702 V-API-3S of G5259 PREP the G3588 T-GPM wise men G3097 N-GPM , was exceeding wroth G2373 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ sent forth G649 V-AAP-NSM , and G2532 CONJ slew G337 V-2AAI-3S all G3956 A-APM the G3588 T-APM children G3816 N-APM that G3588 T-APM were in G1722 PREP Bethlehem G965 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP all G3956 A-DPN the G3588 T-DPN coasts G3725 N-DPN thereof G846 P-GSF , from G575 PREP two years old G1332 A-GSM and G2532 CONJ under G2736 ADV , according G2596 PREP to the G3588 T-ASM time G5550 N-ASM which G3739 R-ASM he had diligently inquired G198 V-AAI-3S of G3844 PREP the G3588 T-GPM wise men G3097 N-GPM .
17 Then G5119 ADV was fulfilled G4137 V-API-3S that which was spoken G4483 V-APP-NSN by G5259 PREP Jeremiah G2408 N-GSM the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-GSN ,
18 In G1722 PREP Ramah G4471 N-PRI was there a voice G5456 N-NSF heard G191 V-API-3S , lamentation G2355 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ weeping G2805 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ great G4183 A-NSM mourning G3602 N-NSM , Rachel G4478 N-PRI weeping G2799 V-PAP-NSF for G3588 T-APN her G3588 T-APN children G5043 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ would G2309 V-IAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N be comforted G3870 V-APN , because G3754 CONJ they are G1526 V-PXI-3P not G3756 PRT-N .
19 But G1161 CONJ when Herod G2264 N-GSM was dead G5053 V-AAP-GSM , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , an angel G32 N-NSM of the Lord G2962 N-GSM appeareth G5316 V-PEI-3S in G2596 PREP a dream G3677 N-OI to Joseph G2501 N-PRI in G1722 PREP Egypt G125 N-DSF ,
20 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Arise G1453 V-APP-NSM , and take G3880 V-2AAM-2S the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-ASF mother G3384 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ go G4198 V-PNM-2S into G1519 PREP the land G1093 N-ASF of Israel G2474 N-PRI : for G1063 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM are dead G2348 V-RAI-3P which sought G2212 V-PAP-NPM the G3588 T-GSN young child G3813 N-GSN \'s life G5590 N-ASF .
21 And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM arose G1453 V-APP-NSM , and took G3880 V-2AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN young child G3813 N-ASN and G2532 CONJ his G3588 T-ASF mother G3384 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ came G2064 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP the land G1093 N-ASF of Israel G2474 N-PRI .
22 But G1161 CONJ when he heard G191 V-AAP-NSM that G3754 CONJ Archelaus G745 N-NSM did reign G936 V-PAI-3S in G1909 PREP Judea G2449 N-GSF in the room G473 PREP of G3588 T-GSM his G3588 T-GSM father G3962 N-GSM Herod G2264 N-GSM , he was afraid G5399 V-AOI-3S to go G565 V-2AAN thither G1563 ADV : notwithstanding G1161 CONJ , being warned of God G5537 V-APP-NSM in G2596 PREP a dream G3677 N-OI , he turned aside G402 V-AAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-APN parts G3313 N-APN of Galilee G1056 N-GSF :
23 And G2532 CONJ he came G2064 V-2AAP-NSM and dwelt G2730 V-AAI-3S in G1519 PREP a city G4172 N-ASF called G3004 V-PPP-ASF Nazareth G3478 N-PRI : that G3704 ADV it G3588 T-NSN might be fulfilled G4137 V-APS-3S which was spoken G4483 V-APP-NSN by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM , He shall be called G2564 V-FPI-3S a Nazarene G3480 N-NSM .
