Numbers 35:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 The LORD gave these instructions to Moses on the plains of Moab beside the Jericho stretch of the Jordan:
2 "Tell the Israelites that out of their hereditary property they shall give the Levites cities for homes, as well as pasture lands around the cities.
3 The cities shall serve them to dwell in, and the pasture lands shall serve their herds and flocks and other animals.
4 The pasture lands of the cities to be assigned the Levites shall extend a thousand cubits from the city walls in each direction.
5 Thus you shall measure out two thousand cubits outside the city along each side-- east, south, west and north-- with the city lying in the center. This shall serve them as the pasture lands of their cities.
6 "Now these are the cities you shall give to the Levites: the six cities of asylum which you must establish as places where a homicide can take refuge, and in addition forty-two other cities--
7 a total of forty-eight cities with their pasture lands to be assigned the Levites.
8 In assigning the cities from the property of the Israelites, take more from a larger group and fewer from a smaller one, so that each group will cede cities to the Levites in proportion to its own heritage."
9 The LORD said to Moses,
10 "Tell the Israelites: When you go across the Jordan into the land of Canaan,
11 select for yourselves cities to serve as cities of asylum, where a homicide who has killed someone unintentionally may take refuge.
12 These cities shall serve you as places of asylum from the avenger of blood, so that a homicide shall not be put to death unless he is first tried before the community.
13 Six cities of asylum shall you assign:
14 three beyond the Jordan, and three in the land of Canaan.
15 These six cities of asylum shall serve not only the Israelites but all the resident or transient aliens among them, so that anyone who has killed another unintentionally may take refuge there.
16 "If a man strikes another with an iron instrument and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
17 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing stone in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
18 If a man strikes another with a death-dealing club in his hand and causes his death, he is a murderer and shall be put to death.
19 The avenger of blood may execute the murderer, putting him to death on sight.
20 "If a man pushes another out of hatred, or after lying in wait for him throws something at him, and causes his death,
21 or if he strikes another out of enmity and causes his death, he shall be put to death as a murderer. The avenger of blood may execute the murderer on sight.
22 "However, if a man pushes another accidentally and not out of enmity, or if without lying in wait for him he throws some object at him,
23 or without seeing him throws a death-dealing stone which strikes him and causes his death, although he was not his enemy nor seeking to harm him:
24 then the community, deciding the case between the slayer and the avenger of blood in accordance with these norms,
25 shall free the homicide from the avenger of blood and shall remand him to the city of asylum where he took refuge; and he shall stay there until the death of the high priest who has been anointed with sacred oil.
26 If the homicide of his own accord leaves the bounds of the city of asylum where he has taken refuge,
27 and the avenger of blood finds him beyond these bounds and kills him, the avenger incurs no bloodguilt;
28 the homicide was bound to stay in his city of asylum until the death of the high priest. Only after the death of the high priest may the homicide return to his own district.
29 "These shall be norms for you and all your descendants, wherever you live, for rendering judgment.
30 "Whenever someone kills another, the evidence of witnesses is required for the execution of the murderer. The evidence of a single witness is not sufficient for putting a person to death.
31 "You shall not accept indemnity in place of the life of a murderer who deserves the death penalty; he must be put to death.
32 Nor shall you accept indemnity to allow a refugee to leave his city of asylum and again dwell elsewhere in the land before the death of the high priest.
33 You shall not desecrate the land where you live. Since bloodshed desecrates the land, the land can have no atonement for the blood shed on it except through the blood of him who shed it.
34 Do not defile the land in which you live and in the midst of which I dwell; for I am the LORD who dwells in the midst of the Israelites."
1 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 in the plains H6160 of Moab H4124 by H5921 PREP Jordan H3383 LFS near Jericho H3405 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
2 Command H6680 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that they give H5414 unto the Levites H3881 of the inheritance H5159 of their possession H272 cities H5892 GFP to dwell in H3427 ; and ye shall give H5414 also unto the Levites H3881 suburbs H4054 for the cities H5892 round about H5439 them .
3 And the cities H5892 shall they have H1961 W-VQQ3MS to dwell in H3427 ; and the suburbs H4054 of them shall be H1961 VQY3MP for their cattle H929 , and for their goods H7399 , and for all H3605 WL-CMS their beasts H2416 .
4 And the suburbs H4054 of the cities H5892 , which H834 RPRO ye shall give H5414 unto the Levites H3881 , shall reach from the wall H7023 of the city H5892 D-GFS and outward H2351 a thousand H505 W-BMS cubits H520 UFS round about H5439 .
5 And ye shall measure H4058 from without H2351 the city H5892 L-NMS on the east H6924 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520 , and on the south H5045 side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520 , and on the west H3220 NMS side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520 , and on the north H6828 NFS side H6285 two thousand H505 cubits H520 ; and the city H5892 shall be in the midst H8432 : this H2088 DPRO shall be H1961 VQY3MS to them the suburbs H4054 of the cities H5892 .
6 And among H854 the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO ye shall give H5414 unto the Levites H3881 there shall be six H8337 RFS cities H5892 for refuge H4733 , which H834 RPRO ye shall appoint H5414 for the manslayer H7523 , that he may flee H5127 thither H8033 ADV-3FS : and to H5921 them ye shall add H5414 forty H705 MMP and two H8147 W-OFD cities H5892 .
7 So all H3605 NMS the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO ye shall give H5414 to the Levites H3881 shall be forty H705 MMP and eight H8083 W-MFS cities H5892 GFS : them shall ye give with H854 their suburbs H4054 .
8 And the cities H5892 which H834 RPRO ye shall give H5414 shall be of the possession H272 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 : from them that have many H7227 ye shall give many H7235 ; but from them that have few H4592 D-AMS ye shall give few H4591 : every one H376 NMS shall give H5414 VHFA of his cities H5892 unto the Levites H3881 according to H6310 K-CMS his inheritance H5159 which H834 RPRO he inheriteth H5157 .
9 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
10 Speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and say H559 unto H413 PREP them , When H3588 CONJ ye H859 PPRO-2MS be come over H5674 Jordan H3383 D-EFS into the land H776 NFS-3FS of Canaan H3667 LMS ;
11 Then ye shall appoint H7136 you cities H5892 GFP to be H1961 cities H5892 of refuge H4733 for you ; that the slayer H7523 may flee H5127 thither H8033 ADV-3FS , which killeth H5221 any person H5315 GFS at unawares H7684 .
12 And they shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS unto you cities H5892 for refuge H4733 from the avenger H1350 ; that the manslayer H7523 die H4191 VQY3MS not H3808 W-NPAR , until H5704 PREP he stand H5975 before H6440 L-CMP the congregation H5712 in judgment H4941 .
13 And of these cities H5892 which H834 RPRO ye shall give H5414 six H8337 RFS cities H5892 shall ye have H1961 for refuge H4733 .
14 Ye shall give H5414 three H7969 BFS cities H5892 on this side H5676 M-CMS Jordan H3383 , and three H7969 BFS cities H5892 shall ye give H5414 in the land H776 B-GFS of Canaan H3667 EMS , which shall be H1961 cities H5892 of refuge H4733 .
15 These H428 D-DPRO-3MP six H8337 RFS cities H5892 shall be H1961 a refuge H4733 , both for the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 , and for the stranger H1616 , and for the sojourner H8453 among H8432 them : that every one H3605 NMS that killeth H5221 any person H5315 GFS unawares H7684 may flee H5127 thither H8033 ADV-3FS .
16 And if H518 W-PART he smite H5221 him with an instrument H3627 of iron H1270 , so that he die H4191 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is a murderer H7523 : the murderer H7523 shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
17 And if H518 W-PART he smite H5221 him with throwing H3027 NFS a stone H68 , wherewith H834 RPRO he may die H4191 VQY3MS , and he die H4191 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is a murderer H7523 : the murderer H7523 shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
18 Or H176 CONJ if he smite H5221 him with a hand H3027 NFS weapon H3627 of wood H6086 NMS , wherewith H834 RPRO he may die H4191 VQY3MS , and he die H4191 , he H1931 PPRO-3MS is a murderer H7523 : the murderer H7523 shall surely be put to death H4191 VQFA .
19 The revenger H1350 of blood H1818 himself H1931 PPRO-3MS shall slay H4191 VHY3MS the murderer H7523 : when he meeteth H6293 him , he H1931 PPRO-3MS shall slay H4191 him .
20 But if H518 W-PART he thrust H1920 him of hatred H8135 , or H176 CONJ hurl H7993 at H5921 PREP-3MS him by laying of wait H6660 , that he die H4191 W-VQY3MS ;
21 Or H176 CONJ in enmity H342 smite H5221 him with his hand H3027 , that he die H4191 : he that smote H5221 him shall surely be put to death H4191 ; for he H1931 PPRO-3MS is a murderer H7523 : the revenger H1350 of blood H1818 shall slay H4191 the murderer H7523 , when he meeteth H6293 him .
22 But if H518 W-PART he thrust H1920 him suddenly H6621 without H3808 B-NPAR enmity H342 , or H176 CONJ have cast H7993 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him any thing H3605 NMS without H3808 B-NPAR laying of wait H6660 ,
23 Or H176 CONJ with any H3605 stone H68 GFS , wherewith H834 RPRO a man may die H4191 VQY3MS , seeing H7200 him not H3808 ADV , and cast H5307 it upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , that he die H4191 , and was not H3808 NADV his enemy H341 VQPMS , neither H3808 W-NADV sought H1245 his harm H7451 :
24 Then the congregation H5712 shall judge H8199 between H996 PREP the slayer H5221 and the revenger H1350 of blood H1818 according to H5921 PREP these H428 judgments H4941 :
25 And the congregation H5712 shall deliver H5337 the slayer H7523 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the revenger H1350 of blood H1818 , and the congregation H5712 shall restore H7725 him to H413 PREP the city H5892 GFS of his refuge H4733 , whither H834 RPRO he was fled H5127 : and he shall abide H3427 in it unto H5704 PREP the death H4194 of the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 , which H834 RPRO was anointed H4886 with the holy H6944 oil H8081 .
26 But if H518 W-PART the slayer H7523 shall at any time come without H3318 the border H1366 CMS of the city H5892 GFS of his refuge H4733 , whither H834 RPRO he was fled H5127 ;
27 And the revenger H1350 of blood H1818 find H4672 him without H2351 the borders H1366 of the city H5892 GFS of his refuge H4733 , and the revenger H1350 of blood H1818 kill H7523 the slayer H7523 ; he shall not H369 NPAR be guilty of blood H1818 NMS :
28 Because H3588 CONJ he should have remained H3427 in the city H5892 of his refuge H4733 until H5704 PREP the death H4194 of the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 : but after H310 the death H4194 of the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 the slayer H7523 shall return H7725 VQY3MS into H413 PREP the land H776 GFS of his possession H272 .
29 So these H428 PMP things shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS for a statute H2708 of judgment H4941 NMS unto you throughout your generations H1755 in all H3605 your dwellings H4186 .
30 Whoso H3605 NMS killeth H5221 any person H5315 GFS , the murderer H7523 shall be put to death H7523 by the mouth H6310 L-CMS of witnesses H5707 : but one H259 MMS witness H5707 shall not H3808 NADV testify H6030 VQY3MS against any person H5315 GFS to cause him to die H4191 .
31 Moreover ye shall take H3947 no H3808 W-NPAR satisfaction H3724 for the life H5315 L-GFS of a murderer H7523 , which H834 RPRO is guilty H7563 AMS of death H4191 L-VQFC : but H3588 CONJ he shall be surely put to death H4191 VQFA .
32 And ye shall take H3947 no H3808 W-NPAR satisfaction H3724 for him that is fled H5127 to H413 PREP the city H5892 GFS of his refuge H4733 , that he should come again H7725 to dwell H3427 L-VQFC in the land H776 B-NFS , until H5704 PREP the death H4194 of the priest H3548 .
33 So ye shall not H3808 W-NPAR pollute H2610 the land H776 D-GFS wherein H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS are : for H3588 CONJ blood H1818 it H1931 PPRO-3MS defileth H2610 the land H776 D-GFS : and the land H776 cannot H3808 W-NPAR be cleansed H3722 of the blood H1818 that H834 RPRO is shed H8210 therein , but H518 PART by the blood H1818 of him that shed H8210 it .
34 Defile H2930 not H3808 W-NPAR therefore the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO ye H859 PPRO-2MS shall inhabit H3427 , wherein H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS dwell H7931 VQPMS : for H3588 CONJ I H589 PPRO-1MS the LORD H3068 EDS dwell H7931 VQPMS among H8432 B-NMS the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
