Acts 13:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 Now there were in the church at Antioch prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Symeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who was a close friend of Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."
3 Then, completing their fasting and prayer, they laid hands on them and sent them off.
4 So they, sent forth by the holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia and from there sailed to Cyprus.
5 When they arrived in Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. They had John also as their assistant.
6 When they had traveled through the whole island as far as Paphos, they met a magician named Bar-Jesus who was a Jewish false prophet.
7 He was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, a man of intelligence, who had summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.
8 But Elymas the magician (for that is what his name means) opposed them in an attempt to turn the proconsul away from the faith.
9 But Saul, also known as Paul, filled with the holy Spirit, looked intently at him
10 and said, "You son of the devil, you enemy of all that is right, full of every sort of deceit and fraud. Will you not stop twisting the straight paths of (the) Lord?
11 Even now the hand of the Lord is upon you. You will be blind, and unable to see the sun for a time." Immediately a dark mist fell upon him, and he went about seeking people to lead him by the hand.
12 When the proconsul saw what had happened, he came to believe, for he was astonished by the teaching about the Lord.
13 From Paphos, Paul and his companions set sail and arrived at Perga in Pamphylia. But John left them and returned to Jerusalem.
14 They continued on from Perga and reached Antioch in Pisidia. On the sabbath they entered (into) the synagogue and took their seats.
15 After the reading of the law and the prophets, the synagogue officials sent word to them, "My brothers, if one of you has a word of exhortation for the people, please speak."
16 So Paul got up, motioned with his hand, and said, "Fellow Israelites and you others who are God-fearing, listen.
17 The God of this people Israel chose our ancestors and exalted the people during their sojourn in the land of Egypt. With uplifted arm he led them out of it
18 and for about forty years he put up with them in the desert.
19 When he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, he gave them their land as an inheritance
20 at the end of about four hundred and fifty years. After these things he provided judges up to Samuel (the) prophet.
21 Then they asked for a king. God gave them Saul, son of Kish, a man from the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years.
22 Then he removed him and raised up David as their king; of him he testified, 'I have found David, son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will carry out my every wish.'
23 From this man's descendants God, according to his promise, has brought to Israel a savior, Jesus.
24 John heralded his coming by proclaiming a baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel;
25 and as John was completing his course, he would say, 'What do you suppose that I am? I am not he. Behold, one is coming after me; I am not worthy to unfasten the sandals of his feet.'
26 "My brothers, children of the family of Abraham, and those others among you who are God-fearing, to us this word of salvation has been sent.
27 The inhabitants of Jerusalem and their leaders failed to recognize him, and by condemning him they fulfilled the oracles of the prophets that are read sabbath after sabbath.
28 For even though they found no grounds for a death sentence, they asked Pilate to have him put to death,
29 and when they had accomplished all that was written about him, they took him down from the tree and placed him in a tomb.
30 But God raised him from the dead,
31 and for many days he appeared to those who had come up with him from Galilee to Jerusalem. These are (now) his witnesses before the people.
32 We ourselves are proclaiming this good news to you that what God promised our ancestors
33 he has brought to fulfillment for us, (their) children, by raising up Jesus, as it is written in the second psalm, 'You are my son; this day I have begotten you.'
34 And that he raised him from the dead never to return to corruption he declared in this way, 'I shall give you the benefits assured to David.'
35 That is why he also says in another psalm, 'You will not suffer your holy one to see corruption.'
36 Now David, after he had served the will of God in his lifetime, fell asleep, was gathered to his ancestors, and did see corruption.
37 But the one whom God raised up did not see corruption.
38 You must know, my brothers, that through him forgiveness of sins is being proclaimed to you, (and) in regard to everything from which you could not be justified under the law of Moses,
39 in him every believer is justified.
40 Be careful, then, that what was said in the prophets not come about:
41 'Look on, you scoffers, be amazed and disappear. For I am doing a work in your days, a work that you will never believe even if someone tells you.'"
42 As they were leaving, they invited them to speak on these subjects the following sabbath.
43 After the congregation had dispersed, many Jews and worshipers who were converts to Judaism followed Paul and Barnabas, who spoke to them and urged them to remain faithful to the grace of God.
44 On the following sabbath almost the whole city gathered to hear the word of the Lord.
45 When the Jews saw the crowds, they were filled with jealousy and with violent abuse contradicted what Paul said.
46 Both Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and said, "It was necessary that the word of God be spoken to you first, but since you reject it and condemn yourselves as unworthy of eternal life, we now turn to the Gentiles.
47 For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I have made you a light to the Gentiles, that you may be an instrument of salvation to the ends of the earth.'"
48 The Gentiles were delighted when they heard this and glorified the word of the Lord. All who were destined for eternal life came to believe,
49 and the word of the Lord continued to spread through the whole region.
50 The Jews, however, incited the women of prominence who were worshipers and the leading men of the city, stirred up a persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them from their territory.
51 So they shook the dust from their feet in protest against them and went to Iconium.
52 The disciples were filled with joy and the holy Spirit.

3 And when G5119 ADV they had fasted G3522 V-AAP-NPM and G2532 CONJ prayed G4336 V-ADP-NPM , and G2532 CONJ laid G2007 V-2AAP-NPM their hands G5495 N-APF on them G846 P-DPM , they sent them away G630 V-AAI-3P .
4 So G3767 CONJ they G3778 D-NPM , being G3303 PRT sent forth G1599 V-APP-NPM by G5259 PREP the G3588 T-GSN Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN , departed G2718 V-2AAI-3P unto G1519 PREP Seleucia G4581 N-ASF ; and G5037 from thence G1564 ADV they sailed G636 V-AAI-3P to G1519 PREP Cyprus G2954 N-ASF .

6 And G1161 CONJ when they had gone through G1330 V-2AAP-NPM the G3588 T-ASF isle G3520 N-ASF unto G891 PREP Paphos G3974 N-GSF , they found G2147 V-2AAI-3P a certain G5100 X-ASM sorcerer G3097 N-ASM , a false prophet G5578 N-ASM , a Jew G2453 A-ASM , whose G3739 R-DSM name G3686 N-NSN was Barjesus G919 N-NSM :
7 Which G3739 R-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S with G4862 PREP the G3588 T-DSM deputy of the country G446 N-DSM , Sergius G4588 N-DSM Paulus G3972 N-DSM , a prudent G4908 A-DSM man G435 N-DSM ; who G3778 D-NSM called for G4341 V-ADP-NSM Barnabas G921 N-ASM and G2532 CONJ Saul G4569 N-ASM , and desired G1934 V-AAI-3S to hear G191 V-AAN the G3588 T-ASM word G3056 N-ASM of God G2316 N-GSM .
8 But G1161 CONJ Elymas G1681 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM sorcerer G3097 N-NSM ( CONJ for CONJ so G3779 ADV is his name by interpretation G3177 V-PPI-3S ) withstood G436 V-IMI-3S them G846 P-DPM , seeking G2212 V-PAP-NSM to turn away G1294 V-AAN the G3588 T-ASM deputy G446 N-ASM from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSF faith G4102 N-GSF .
9 Then G1161 CONJ Saul G4569 N-NSM , ( T-NSM who G3588 T-NSM also G2532 CONJ is called Paul G3972 N-NSM , ) filled G4130 V-APP-NSM with the Holy G40 A-GSN Ghost G4151 N-GSN , set his eyes G816 V-AAP-NSM on G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM ,
10 And said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , O G5599 INJ full G4134 A-NSM of all G3956 A-GSM subtlety G1388 N-GSM and G2532 CONJ all G3956 A-GSF mischief G4468 N-GSF , thou child G5207 N-VSM of the devil G1228 A-GSM , thou enemy G2190 A-VSM of all G3956 A-GSF righteousness G1343 N-GSF , wilt thou not G3756 PRT-N cease G3973 V-FDI-2S to pervert G1294 V-PAP-NSM the G3588 T-APF right G2117 A-APF ways G3598 N-APF of the Lord G2962 N-GSM ?
11 And G2532 CONJ now G3568 ADV , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , the hand G5495 N-NSF of the G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-GSM is upon G1909 PREP thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ thou shalt be G2071 V-FXI-2S blind G5185 A-NSM , not G3361 PRT-N seeing G991 V-PAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASM sun G2246 N-ASM for G891 PREP a season G2540 N-GSM . 12 Then G5119 ADV the G3588 T-NSM deputy G446 N-NSM , when he G3588 T-ASN saw G1492 V-2AAP-NSM what was done G1096 V-2RAP-ASN , believed G4100 V-AAI-3S , being astonished G1605 V-PPP-NSM at G1909 PREP the G3588 T-DSF doctrine G1322 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM Lord G2962 N-GSM .
13 Now G1161 CONJ when Paul G3972 N-ASM and his company G4012 PREP loosed G321 V-APP-NPM from G575 PREP Paphos G3974 N-GSF , they came G2064 V-2AAI-3P to G1519 PREP Perga G4011 N-ASF in Pamphylia G3828 N-GSF : and G1161 CONJ John G2491 N-NSM departing G672 V-AAP-NSM from G575 PREP them G846 P-GPM returned G5290 V-AAI-3S to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF .
14 But G1161 CONJ when they G846 P-NPM departed G1330 V-2AAP-NPM from G575 PREP Perga G4011 N-GSF , they came G3854 V-2ADI-3P to G1519 PREP Antioch G490 N-ASF in Pisidia G4099 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ went G1525 V-2AAP-NPM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF synagogue G4864 N-ASF on the G3588 T-GPN sabbath G4521 N-GPN day G2250 N-DSF , and sat down G2523 V-AAI-3P .
15 And G1161 CONJ after G3326 PREP the G3588 T-ASF reading G320 N-ASF of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM law G3551 N-GSM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM the G3588 T-NPM rulers of the synagogue G752 N-NPM sent G649 V-AAI-3P unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Ye men G435 N-VPM and brethren G80 N-VPM , if G1487 COND ye have V-PXI-3S any word G3056 N-NSM of exhortation G3874 N-GSF for G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM , say on G3004 V-PAM-2P .

20 And G2532 CONJ after G3326 PREP that G5023 D-APN he gave G1325 V-AAI-3S unto them judges G2923 N-APM about the space of G5613 ADV four hundred G5071 A-DPN and G2532 CONJ fifty G4004 A-NUI years G2094 N-DPN , until G2193 CONJ Samuel G4545 N-PRI the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM .
21 And afterward G2547 ADV-C they desired G154 V-AMI-3P a king G935 N-ASM : and G2532 CONJ God G2316 N-NSM gave G1325 V-AAI-3S unto them G3588 T-ASM Saul G4549 N-PRI the son G5207 N-ASM of Kish G2797 N-PRI , a man G435 N-ASM of G1537 PREP the tribe G5443 N-GSF of Benjamin G958 N-PRI , by the space of forty G5062 A-NUI years G2094 N-APN .

25 And G1161 CONJ as G5613 ADV John G2491 N-NSM fulfilled G4137 V-IAI-3S his course G1408 N-ASM , he said G3004 V-IAI-3S , Whom G5101 I-ASM think G5282 V-PAI-2P ye that I G3165 P-1AS am G1511 V-PXN ? I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N he . But G235 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , there cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S one after G3326 PREP me G1691 P-1AS , whose G3739 R-GSM shoes G5266 N-ASN of his feet G4228 N-GPM I am G1510 V-PXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N worthy G514 A-NSM to loose G3089 V-AAN .
26 Men G435 N-VPM and brethren G80 N-VPM , children G5207 N-VPM of the stock G1085 N-GSN of Abraham G11 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ whosoever among G1722 PREP you G5213 P-2DP feareth G5399 V-PNP-NPM God G2316 N-ASM , to you G5213 P-2DP is the G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM of G3588 T-GSF this G3588 T-GSF salvation G4991 N-GSF sent G649 V-2API-3S .
27 For G1063 CONJ they that dwell G2730 V-PAP-NPM at G1722 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ their G3588 T-NPM rulers G758 N-NPM , because they knew him not G50 V-AAP-NPM , nor G2532 CONJ yet the G3588 T-APF voices G5456 N-APF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM prophets G4396 N-GPM which G3588 T-APF are read G314 V-PPP-APF every G2596 PREP sabbath day G4521 N-ASN , they have fulfilled G4137 V-AAI-3P them in condemning G2919 V-AAP-NPM him .
28 And G2532 CONJ though they found G2147 V-2AAP-NPM no G3367 A-ASF cause G156 N-ASF of death G2288 N-GSM in him , yet desired G154 V-AMI-3P they Pilate G4091 N-ASM that he G846 P-ASM should be slain G337 V-APN .
29 And G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV they had fulfilled G5055 V-AAI-3P all G537 that G3588 T-APN was written G1125 V-RPP-APN of G4012 PREP him G846 P-GSM , they took him down G2507 V-2AAP-NPM from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSN tree G3586 N-GSN , and laid G5087 V-AAI-3P him in G1519 PREP a sepulcher G3419 N-ASN .
30 But G1161 CONJ God G2316 N-NSM raised G1453 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM :
31 And he G3739 R-NSM was seen G3700 V-API-3S many G4119 A-APF-C days G2250 N-APF of them which came up with G4872 V-2AAP-DPM him G846 P-DSM from G575 PREP Galilee G1056 N-GSF to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , who G3748 R-NPM are G1526 V-PXI-3P his G846 P-GSM witnesses G3144 N-NPM unto G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASM people G2992 N-ASM .
32 And G2532 CONJ we G2249 P-1NP declare unto you glad tidings G2097 V-PMI-1P , how that the G3588 T-ASF promise G1860 N-ASF which G3588 T-ASF was made G1096 V-2ADP-ASF unto G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM fathers G3962 N-APM ,
33 God G2316 hath fulfilled G1603 the same G5026 unto us G2254 their G846 children G5043 , in that he hath raised up Jesus again G450 ; as G5613 ADV it is also G2532 CONJ written G1125 V-RPI-3S in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM second G1208 A-DSM psalm G5568 N-DSM , Thou G4771 P-2NS art G1488 V-PXI-2S my G3450 P-1GS Son G5207 N-NSM , this day G4594 ADV have I G1473 P-1NS begotten G1080 V-RAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS .
34 And G1161 CONJ as concerning that G3754 CONJ he raised him up G450 V-AAI-3S from G1537 PREP the dead G3498 A-GPM , now no more G3371 ADV to G3195 V-PAP-ASM return G5290 V-PAN to G1519 PREP corruption G1312 N-ASF , he said G2046 V-RAI-3S on this wise G3779 ADV , I will give G1325 V-FAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP the G3588 T-APN sure G4103 A-APN mercies G3741 A-APN of David G1138 N-PRI .
35 Wherefore G1352 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S also G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP another G2087 A-DSM psalm , Thou shalt not G3756 PRT-N suffer G1325 V-FAI-2S thine G3588 T-ASM Holy One G3741 A-ASM to see G1492 V-2AAN corruption G1312 N-ASF .
36 For G1063 CONJ David G1138 N-PRI , after he G3303 PRT had served G5256 V-AAP-NSM his own G2398 A-DSF generation G1074 N-DSF by the G3588 T-DSF will G1012 N-DSF of God G2316 N-GSM , fell on sleep G2837 V-API-3S , and G2532 CONJ was laid G4369 V-API-3S unto G4314 PREP his G3588 T-APM fathers G3962 N-APM , and G2532 CONJ saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S corruption G1312 N-ASF :
37 But G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM , whom G3588 T-NSM God G2316 N-NSM raised again G1453 V-AAI-3S , saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S no G3756 PRT-N corruption G1312 N-ASF .
38 Be G2077 V-PXM-3S it known G1110 A-NSN unto you G5213 P-2DP therefore G3767 CONJ , men G435 N-VPM and brethren G80 N-VPM , that G3754 CONJ through G1223 PREP this man G5127 D-GSM is preached G2605 V-PPI-3S unto you G5213 P-2DP the forgiveness G859 N-NSF of sins G266 N-GPF :
39 And G2532 CONJ by G1722 PREP him G5129 D-DSM all G3956 A-GPN that believe G4100 V-PAP-NSM are justified G1344 V-APN from G575 PREP all things G3956 A-NSM , from which G3739 R-GPN ye could G1410 V-AOI-2P not G3756 PRT-N be justified G1344 V-PPI-3S by G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM law G3551 N-DSM of Moses G3475 N-GSM .
40 Beware G991 V-PAM-2P therefore G3767 CONJ , lest G3361 PRT-N that come G1904 V-2AAS-3S upon G1909 PREP you G5209 P-2AP , which is spoken of G2046 V-RPP-ASN in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPM prophets G4396 N-DPM ;
41 Behold G1492 V-2AAM-2P , ye despisers G2707 N-NPM , and G2532 CONJ wonder G2296 V-AAM-2P , and G2532 CONJ perish G853 V-APM-2P : for G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS work G2038 V-PNI-1S a work G2041 N-ASN in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF days G2250 N-DPF , a work G2041 N-ASN which G3739 R-ASN ye shall in no wise G3364 believe G4100 V-AAS-2P , though G1437 COND a man G5100 X-NSM declare G1555 V-PNS-3S it unto you G5213 P-2DP .
