Luke 19:1 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 He came to Jericho and intended to pass through the town.
2 Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man,
3 was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature.
4 So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way.
5 When he reached the place, Jesus looked up and said to him, "Zacchaeus, come down quickly, for today I must stay at your house."
6 And he came down quickly and received him with joy.
7 When they all saw this, they began to grumble, saying, "He has gone to stay at the house of a sinner."
8 But Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, "Behold, half of my possessions, Lord, I shall give to the poor, and if I have extorted anything from anyone I shall repay it four times over."
9 And Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house because this man too is a descendant of Abraham.
10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost."
11 While they were listening to him speak, he proceeded to tell a parable because he was near Jerusalem and they thought that the kingdom of God would appear there immediately.
12 So he said, "A nobleman went off to a distant country to obtain the kingship for himself and then to return.
13 He called ten of his servants and gave them ten gold coins and told them, 'Engage in trade with these until I return.'
14 His fellow citizens, however, despised him and sent a delegation after him to announce, 'We do not want this man to be our king.'
15 But when he returned after obtaining the kingship, he had the servants called, to whom he had given the money, to learn what they had gained by trading.
16 The first came forward and said, 'Sir, your gold coin has earned ten additional ones.'
17 He replied, 'Well done, good servant! You have been faithful in this very small matter; take charge of ten cities.'
18 Then the second came and reported, 'Your gold coin, sir, has earned five more.'
19 And to this servant too he said, 'You, take charge of five cities.'
20 Then the other servant came and said, 'Sir, here is your gold coin; I kept it stored away in a handkerchief,
21 for I was afraid of you, because you are a demanding person; you take up what you did not lay down and you harvest what you did not plant.'
22 He said to him, 'With your own words I shall condemn you, you wicked servant. You knew I was a demanding person, taking up what I did not lay down and harvesting what I did not plant;
23 why did you not put my money in a bank? Then on my return I would have collected it with interest.'
24 And to those standing by he said, 'Take the gold coin from him and give it to the servant who has ten.'
25 But they said to him, 'Sir, he has ten gold coins.'
26 'I tell you, to everyone who has, more will be given, but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
27 Now as for those enemies of mine who did not want me as their king, bring them here and slay them before me.'"
28 After he had said this, he proceeded on his journey up to Jerusalem.
29 As he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples.
30 He said, "Go into the village opposite you, and as you enter it you will find a colt tethered on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it here.
31 And if anyone should ask you, 'Why are you untying it?' you will answer, 'The Master has need of it.'"
32 So those who had been sent went off and found everything just as he had told them.
33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, "Why are you untying this colt?"
34 They answered, "The Master has need of it."
35 So they brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks over the colt, and helped Jesus to mount.
36 As he rode along, the people were spreading their cloaks on the road;
37 and now as he was approaching the slope of the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of his disciples began to praise God aloud with joy for all the mighty deeds they had seen.
38 They proclaimed: "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest."
39 Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples."
40 He said in reply, "I tell you, if they keep silent, the stones will cry out!"
41 As he drew near, he saw the city and wept over it,
42 saying, "If this day you only knew what makes for peace-- but now it is hidden from your eyes.
43 For the days are coming upon you when your enemies will raise a palisade against you; they will encircle you and hem you in on all sides.
44 They will smash you to the ground and your children within you, and they will not leave one stone upon another within you because you did not recognize the time of your visitation."
45 Then Jesus entered the temple area and proceeded to drive out those who were selling things,
46 saying to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves.'"
47 And every day he was teaching in the temple area. The chief priests, the scribes, and the leaders of the people, meanwhile, were seeking to put him to death,
48 but they could find no way to accomplish their purpose because all the people were hanging on his words.

2 And G2532 CONJ , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , there was a man G435 N-NSM named G3686 N-DSN Zacchaeus G2195 N-NSM , which G846 P-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S the chief among the publicans G754 N-NSM , and G2532 CONJ he G3778 D-NSM was G2258 V-IXI-3S rich G4145 A-NSM .
3 And G2532 CONJ he sought G2212 V-IAI-3S to see G1492 V-2AAN Jesus G2424 N-ASM who G5101 I-NSM he was G2076 V-PXI-3S ; and G2076 V-PXI-3S could G1410 V-INI-3S not G3756 PRT-N for G575 PREP the G3588 T-GSM press G3793 N-GSM , because G3754 CONJ he was G2258 V-IXI-3S little G3398 A-NSM of stature G2244 N-DSF .
4 And G2532 CONJ he ran G4390 V-2AAP-NSM before G1715 ADV , and climbed up G305 V-2AAI-3S into G1909 PREP a sycamore tree G4809 N-ASF to G2443 CONJ see G1492 V-2AAS-3S him G846 P-ASM : for G3754 CONJ he was G3195 V-IAI-3S to pass G1330 V-PNN that G1565 D-GSF way .
5 And G2532 CONJ when G5613 ADV Jesus G2424 N-NSM came G2064 V-2AAI-3S to G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASM place G5117 N-ASM , he looked up G308 V-AAP-NSM , and saw G1492 V-2AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , Zacchaeus G2195 N-VSM , make haste G4692 V-AAP-NSM , and come down G2597 V-2AAM-2S ; for G1063 CONJ today G4594 ADV I G3165 P-1AS must G1163 V-PQI-3S abide G3306 V-AAN at G1722 PREP thy G3588 T-DSM house G3624 N-DSM .
6 And G2532 CONJ he made haste G4692 V-AAP-NSM , and came down G2597 V-2AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ received G5264 V-ADI-3S him G846 P-ASM joyfully G5463 V-PAP-NSM .
7 And G2532 CONJ when they saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM it , they all G537 murmured G1234 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , That G3754 CONJ he was gone G1525 V-2AAI-3S to be guest G2647 V-AAN with G3844 PREP a man G435 N-DSM that is a sinner G268 A-DSM .
8 And G1161 CONJ Zacchaeus G2195 N-NSM stood G2476 V-APP-NSM , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASM Lord G2962 N-ASM ; Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , Lord G2962 N-VSM , the G3588 T-APN half G2255 A-APN of G3588 T-GPN my G3588 T-GPN goods G5224 V-PAP-GPN I give G1325 V-PAI-1S to the G3588 T-DPM poor G4434 A-DPM ; and G2532 CONJ if G1487 COND I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation G4811 V-AAI-1S , I restore G591 V-PAI-1S him fourfold G5073 A-ASN .
9 And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , This day G4594 ADV is salvation G4991 N-NSF come G1096 V-2ADI-3S to this G3588 T-DSM house G3624 N-DSM forsomuch as G2530 ADV he G846 P-NSM also G2532 CONJ is G2076 V-PXI-3S a son G5207 N-NSM of Abraham G11 N-PRI .
10 For G1063 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM of man G444 N-GSM is come G2064 V-2AAI-3S to seek G2212 V-AAN and G2532 CONJ to save G4982 V-AAN that which was lost G622 V-2RAP-ASN .
11 And G1161 CONJ as they G846 P-GPM heard G191 V-PAP-GPM these things G5023 D-APN , he added G4369 V-2AAP-NSM and spake G2036 V-2AAI-3S a parable G3850 N-ASF , because he G846 P-ASM was G1511 V-PXN nigh to G1451 ADV Jerusalem G2419 N-PRI , and G2532 CONJ because they G846 P-APM thought G1380 V-PAN that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF kingdom G932 N-NSF of God G2316 N-GSM should G3195 V-PAI-3S immediately G3916 ADV appear G398 V-PPN .
12 He said G2036 V-2AAI-3S therefore G3767 CONJ , A certain G5100 X-NSM noble G2104 A-NSM man G444 N-NSM went G4198 V-AOI-3S into G1519 PREP a far G3117 A-ASF country G5561 N-ASF to receive G2983 V-2AAN for himself G1438 F-3DSM a kingdom G932 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ to return G5290 V-AAN .
13 And G1161 CONJ he called G2564 V-AAP-NSM his G1438 F-3GSM ten G1176 A-NUI servants G1401 N-APM , and delivered G1325 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-DPM ten G1176 A-NUI pounds G3414 N-APF-C , and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Occupy G4231 V-ADM-2P till G2193 CONJ I come G2064 V-PNI-1S .
14 But G1161 CONJ his G846 P-GSM citizens G4177 N-NPM hated G3404 V-IAI-3P him G846 P-ASM , and G2532 CONJ sent G649 V-AAI-3P a message G4242 N-ASF after G3694 ADV him G846 P-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , We will not G3756 PRT-N have G2309 V-PAI-1P this G5126 D-ASM man to reign G936 V-AAN over G1909 PREP us G2248 P-1AP .
15 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , that when he G3588 T-DSM was returned G1880 V-2AAN , having received G2983 V-2AAP-ASM the G3588 T-ASF kingdom G932 N-ASF , then G2532 CONJ he commanded G2036 V-2AAI-3S these G3588 T-APM servants G1401 N-APM to be called G5455 V-APN unto him G848 , to whom G3739 R-DPM he had given G1325 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN money G694 N-ASN , that G2443 CONJ he might know G1097 V-2AAS-3S how much G5101 I-NSM every man G5100 had gained by trading G1281 V-ADI-3S .
16 Then G1161 CONJ came G3854 V-2ADI-3S the G3588 T-NSM first G4413 A-NSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , thy G3588 T-NSF pound G3414 N-NSF hath gained G4333 V-ADI-3S ten G1176 A-NUI pounds G3414 N-APF-C .
17 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Well G2095 ADV , thou good G18 A-VSM servant G1401 N-VSM : because G3754 CONJ thou hast been G1096 V-2ADI-2S faithful G4103 A-NSM in G1722 PREP a very little G1646 A-DSN , have V-PXM-2S thou authority G1849 N-ASF over G1883 ADV ten G1176 A-NUI cities G4172 N-GPF .
18 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM second G1208 A-NSM came G2064 V-2AAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , thy G3588 T-NSF pound G3414 N-NSF hath gained G4160 V-AAI-3S five G4002 A-NUI pounds G3414 N-APF-C .
19 And G1161 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S likewise G2532 CONJ to him G5129 D-DSM , Be G1096 V-PNM-2S thou G4771 P-2NS also G2532 CONJ over G1883 ADV five G4002 A-NUI cities G4172 N-GPF .
20 And G2532 CONJ another G2087 A-NSM came G2064 V-2AAI-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , here is thy G3588 T-NSF pound G3414 N-NSF , which G3739 R-ASF I have G2192 V-IAI-1S kept laid up G606 V-PNP-ASF in G1722 PREP a napkin G4676 N-DSN :
21 For G1063 CONJ I feared G5399 V-INI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS , because G3754 CONJ thou art G1488 V-PXI-2S an austere G840 A-NSM man G444 N-NSM : thou takest up G142 V-PAI-2S that G3739 R-ASN thou laidst not down G5087 V-AAI-2S , and G2532 CONJ reapest G2325 V-PAI-2S that G3739 R-ASN thou didst not G3756 PRT-N sow G4687 V-AAI-2S .
22 And G1161 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto him G846 P-DSM , Out G1537 PREP of thine G3588 T-GSN own G4675 P-2GS mouth G4750 N-GSN will I judge G2919 V-FAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS , thou wicked G4190 A-VSM servant G1401 N-VSM . Thou knewest G1492 V-LAI-2S that G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS was G1510 V-PXI-1S an austere G840 A-NSM man G444 N-NSM , taking up G142 V-PAP-NSM that G3739 R-ASN I laid not down G5087 V-AAI-1S , and G2532 CONJ reaping G2325 V-PAP-NSM that G3739 R-ASN I did not G3756 PRT-N sow G4687 V-AAI-1S :
23 Wherefore G1302 then G2532 CONJ gavest G1325 V-AAI-2S not G3756 PRT-N thou my G3588 T-ASN money G694 N-ASN into G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASN bank G5132 N-ASF , that G2532 CONJ at my G1473 P-1NS coming G2064 V-2AAP-NSM I might have required G4238 V-AAI-1S mine own G846 P-ASN with G4862 PREP usury G5110 N-DSM ?
24 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them that stood by G3936 V-RAP-DPM , Take G142 V-AAM-2P from G575 PREP him G846 P-GSM the G3588 T-ASF pound G3414 N-ASF-C , and G2532 CONJ give G1325 V-2AAM-2P it to him G3588 T-APF that G3588 T-APF hath G2192 V-PAP-DSM ten G1176 A-NUI pounds G3414 N-APF-C .
25 ( CONJ And CONJ they said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM , he hath G2192 V-PAI-3S ten G1176 A-NUI pounds G3414 N-APF-C . )
26 For G1063 CONJ I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ unto every one G3956 A-DSM which hath G2192 V-PAP-DSM shall be given G1325 V-FPI-3S ; and G1161 CONJ from G575 PREP him G3588 T-GSM that G3588 T-GSM hath G2192 V-PAP-GSM not G3361 PRT-N , even G2532 CONJ that G3739 R-NSN he hath G2192 V-PAI-3S shall be taken away G142 V-FPI-3S from G575 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
27 But G4133 ADV those G1565 D-APM mine G3588 T-APM enemies G2190 A-APM , which G3588 T-APM would G2309 V-AAP-APM not G3361 PRT-N that I G3165 P-1AS should reign G936 V-AAN over G1909 PREP them G846 P-APM , bring G71 V-2AAM-2P hither G5602 ADV , and G2532 CONJ slay G2695 V-AAM-2P them before G1715 PREP me G3450 P-1GS .
28 And G2532 CONJ when he had thus G5023 D-APN spoken G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , he went G4198 V-INI-3S before G1715 ADV , ascending up G305 V-PAP-NSM to G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF .
29 And G2532 CONJ it came to pass G1096 V-2ADI-3S , when G5613 ADV he was come nigh G1448 V-AAI-3S to G1519 PREP Bethphage G967 N-PRI and G2532 CONJ Bethany G963 N-ASF , at G4314 PREP the G3588 T-ASN mount G3735 N-ASN called G2564 V-PPP-ASN the mount of Olives G1636 N-GPF , he sent G649 V-AAI-3S two G1417 A-NUI of G3588 T-GPM his G3588 T-GPM disciples G3101 N-GPM ,
30 Saying G2036 V-2AAP-NSM , Go G5217 V-PAM-2P ye into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF village G2968 N-ASF over against G2713 ADV you ; in G1722 PREP the which G3739 R-DSF at your entering G1531 V-PNP-NPM ye shall find G2147 V-FAI-2P a colt G4454 N-ASM tied G1210 V-RPP-ASM , whereon G1909 PREP yet never G4455 ADV man G444 N-GPM sat G2523 V-AAI-3S : loose G3089 V-AAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM , and bring G71 V-2AAM-2P him hither .
31 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND any man G5100 X-NSM ask G2065 V-PAS-3S you G5209 P-2AP , Why G1302 do ye loose G3089 V-PAI-2P him ? thus G3779 ADV shall ye say G2046 V-FAI-2P unto him G846 P-DSM , Because G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM hath G2192 V-PAI-3S need G5532 N-ASF of him G846 P-GSM .
32 And G1161 CONJ they that were sent G649 V-RPP-NPM went their way G565 V-2AAP-NPM , and found G2147 V-2AAI-3P even as G2531 ADV he had said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM .
33 And G1161 CONJ as they G846 P-GPM were loosing G3089 V-PAP-GPM the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM , the G3588 T-NPM owners G2962 N-NPM thereof G846 P-GSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , Why G5101 I-ASN loose G3089 V-PAI-2P ye G3588 T-ASM the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM ?
34 And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , The G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM hath G2192 V-PAI-3S need G5532 N-ASF of him G846 P-GSM .
35 And G2532 CONJ they brought G71 V-2AAI-3P him G846 P-ASM to G4314 PREP Jesus G2424 N-ASM : and G2532 CONJ they cast G1977 V-AAP-NPM their G3588 T-APN garments G2440 N-APN upon G1909 PREP the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM , and they set Jesus thereon G1913 V-AAI-3P .
36 And G1161 CONJ as he G846 P-GSM went G4198 V-PNP-GSM , they spread G5291 V-IAI-3P their G3588 T-APN clothes G2440 N-APN in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF .
37 And G1161 CONJ when he G846 P-GSM was come nigh G1448 V-PAP-GSM , even now G2235 ADV at G4314 PREP the G3588 T-DSF descent G2600 N-DSF of G3588 T-GSN the G3588 T-GSN mount G3735 N-GSN of Olives G1636 N-GPF , the G3588 T-GPF whole G537 A-NSN multitude G4128 N-NSN of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM disciples G3101 N-GPM began G756 V-ADI-3P to rejoice G5463 V-PAP-NPM and praise G134 V-PAN God G2316 N-ASM with a loud G3173 A-DSF voice G5456 N-DSF for G4012 PREP all G3956 A-GPF the mighty works G1411 N-GPF that G3739 R-GPF they had seen G1492 V-2AAI-3P ;
38 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Blessed G2127 V-RPP-NSM be the G3588 T-NSM King G935 N-NSM that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM in G1722 PREP the name G3686 N-DSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM : peace G1515 N-NSF in G1722 PREP heaven G3772 N-DSM , and G2532 CONJ glory G1391 N-NSF in G1722 PREP the highest G5310 A-DPN .
39 And G2532 CONJ some G5100 X-NPM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM Pharisees G5330 N-GPM from G575 PREP among the G3588 T-GSM multitude G3793 N-GSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM , Master G1320 N-VSM , rebuke G2008 V-AAM-2S thy G3588 T-DPM disciples G3101 N-DPM .
40 And G2532 CONJ he answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , I tell G3004 V-PAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP that G3754 CONJ , if G1437 COND these G3778 D-NPM should hold their peace G4623 V-AAS-3P , the G3588 T-NPM stones G3037 N-NPM would immediately cry out G2896 V-2FDI-3P .
41 And G2532 CONJ when G5613 ADV he was come near G1448 V-AAI-3S , he beheld G1492 V-2AAP-NSM the G3588 T-ASF city G4172 N-ASF , and wept G2799 V-AAI-3S over G1909 PREP it G846 P-DSF ,
42 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , If G1487 COND thou hadst known G1097 V-2AAI-2S , even G2532 CONJ thou G4771 P-2NS , at least G2532 CONJ in G1722 PREP this G5026 thy G3588 T-DSF day G2250 N-DSF , the things G3588 T-DSF which G3588 T-APN belong unto G4314 PREP thy G4675 P-2GS peace G1515 N-ASF ! but G1161 CONJ now G3568 ADV they are hid G2928 V-2API-3S from G575 PREP thine G4675 P-2GS eyes G3788 N-GPM .
43 For G3754 CONJ the days G2250 N-NPF shall come G2240 V-FAI-3P upon G1909 PREP thee G4571 P-2AS , that G2532 CONJ thine G3588 T-NPM enemies G2190 A-NPM shall cast a trench about G4016 V-FAI-3P thee G4571 P-2AS , and G2532 CONJ compass thee round G4033 V-FAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ keep thee in V-FAI-3P on every side G3840 ADV ,
44 And G2532 CONJ shall lay thee even with the ground G1474 V-FAI-3P , and G2532 CONJ thy G3588 T-APN children G5043 N-APN within G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS ; and G2532 CONJ they shall not G3756 PRT-N leave G863 V-FAI-3P in G1722 PREP thee G4671 P-2DS one stone upon another G3037 N-ASM ; because G473 PREP thou knewest G1097 V-2AAI-2S not G3756 PRT-N the G3588 T-ASM time G2540 N-ASM of G3588 T-GSF thy G3588 T-GSF visitation G1984 N-GSF .
45 And G2532 CONJ he went G1525 V-2AAP-NSM into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN temple G2411 N-ASN , and began G756 V-ADI-3S to cast out G1544 V-PAN them that sold G4453 V-PAP-APM therein G1722 PREP , and G2532 CONJ them that bought G59 V-PAP-APM ;
46 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , It is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , My G3588 T-NSM house G3624 N-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S the house G3624 N-NSM of prayer G4335 N-GSF : but G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP have made G4160 V-AAI-2P it G846 P-ASM a den G4693 N-ASN of thieves G3027 N-GPM .
47 And G2532 CONJ he G3588 T-ASN taught G2258 V-IXI-3S daily G2596 PREP in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN . But G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-DSN chief priests G749 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM chief G4413 A-NPM of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM people G2992 N-GSM sought G2212 V-IAI-3P to destroy G622 V-AAN him G846 P-ASM ,
