John 8:51 (NASB) New American Standard Bible

1 while Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 But early in the morning he arrived again in the temple area, and all the people started coming to him, and he sat down and taught them.
3 Then the scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery and made her stand in the middle.
4 They said to him, "Teacher, this woman was caught in the very act of committing adultery.
5 Now in the law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say?"
6 They said this to test him, so that they could have some charge to bring against him. Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with his finger.
7 But when they continued asking him, he straightened up and said to them, "Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her."
8 Again he bent down and wrote on the ground.
9 And in response, they went away one by one, beginning with the elders. So he was left alone with the woman before him.
10 Then Jesus straightened up and said to her, "Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?"
11 She replied, "No one, sir." Then Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go, (and) from now on do not sin any more."
12 Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
13 So the Pharisees said to him, "You testify on your own behalf, so your testimony cannot be verified."
14 Jesus answered and said to them, "Even if I do testify on my own behalf, my testimony can be verified, because I know where I came from and where I am going. But you do not know where I come from or where I am going.
15 You judge by appearances, but I do not judge anyone.
16 And even if I should judge, my judgment is valid, because I am not alone, but it is I and the Father who sent me.
17 Even in your law it is written that the testimony of two men can be verified.
18 I testify on my behalf and so does the Father who sent me."
19 So they said to him, "Where is your father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."
20 He spoke these words while teaching in the treasury in the temple area. But no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
21 He said to them again, "I am going away and you will look for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going you cannot come."
22 So the Jews said, "He is not going to kill himself, is he, because he said, 'Where I am going you cannot come'?"
23 He said to them, "You belong to what is below, I belong to what is above. You belong to this world, but I do not belong to this world.
24 That is why I told you that you will die in your sins. For if you do not believe that I AM, you will die in your sins."
25 So they said to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "What I told you from the beginning.
26 I have much to say about you in condemnation. But the one who sent me is true, and what I heard from him I tell the world."
27 They did not realize that he was speaking to them of the Father.
28 So Jesus said (to them), "When you lift up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I AM, and that I do nothing on my own, but I say only what the Father taught me.
29 The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, because I always do what is pleasing to him."
30 Because he spoke this way, many came to believe in him.
31 Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, "If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples,
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33 They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, 'You will become free'?"
34 Jesus answered them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin.
35 A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains.
36 So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free.
37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you.
38 I tell you what I have seen in the Father's presence; then do what you have heard from the Father."
39 They answered and said to him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would be doing the works of Abraham.
40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.
41 You are doing the works of your father!" (So) they said to him, "We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God."
42 Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.
43 Why do you not understand what I am saying? Because you cannot bear to hear my word.
44 You belong to your father the devil and you willingly carry out your father's desires. He was a murderer from the beginning and does not stand in truth, because there is no truth in him. When he tells a lie, he speaks in character, because he is a liar and the father of lies.
45 But because I speak the truth, you do not believe me.
46 Can any of you charge me with sin? If I am telling the truth, why do you not believe me?
47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not listen, because you do not belong to God."
48 The Jews answered and said to him, "Are we not right in saying that you are a Samaritan and are possessed?"
49 Jesus answered, "I am not possessed; I honor my Father, but you dishonor me.
50 I do not seek my own glory; there is one who seeks it and he is the one who judges.
51 Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever keeps my word will never see death."
52 (So) the Jews said to him, "Now we are sure that you are possessed. Abraham died, as did the prophets, yet you say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.'
53 Are you greater than our father Abraham, who died? Or the prophets, who died? Who do you make yourself out to be?"
54 Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is worth nothing; but it is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say, 'He is our God.'
55 You do not know him, but I know him. And if I should say that I do not know him, I would be like you a liar. But I do know him and I keep his word.
56 Abraham your father rejoiced to see my day; he saw it and was glad.
57 So the Jews said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old and you have seen Abraham?"
58 Jesus said to them, "Amen, amen, I say to you, before Abraham came to be, I AM."
59 So they picked up stones to throw at him; but Jesus hid and went out of the temple area.

3 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM scribes G1122 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ Pharisees G5330 N-NPM brought G71 V-PAI-3P unto G4314 PREP him G846 P-ASM a woman G1135 N-ASF taken G2638 V-RPP-ASF in G1722 PREP adultery G3430 N-DSF ; and G2532 CONJ when they had set G2476 V-AAP-NPM her G846 P-ASF in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN ,
4 They say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Master G1320 N-VSM , this G3778 D-ASF woman G1135 was taken G2638 in adultery G3431 V-PMP-ASF , in the very act G1888 A-DSM .
5 Now G1161 CONJ Moses G3475 N-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSM law G3551 N-DSM commanded G1781 V-ADI-3S us G2254 , that such G5108 D-APF should be stoned G3036 V-PPN : but G3767 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN sayest G3004 V-PAI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS ?
6 This G5124 D-ASN they said G3004 V-IAI-3P , tempting G3985 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM , that G2443 CONJ they might have G2192 V-PAS-3P to accuse G2723 him G846 P-GSM . But G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM stooped G2955 V-AAP-NSM down G2736 PREP , and with his finger G1147 N-DSM wrote G1125 V-IAI-3S on G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF ground G1093 N-ASF , as though he V-PNP-NSM heard G4364 V-PNP-NSM them G3361 V-PNP-NSM not G3361 V-PNP-NSM .
7 So G1161 CONJ when G5613 ADV they continued G1961 V-IAI-3P asking G2065 V-PAP-NPM him G846 P-ASM , he lifted up G352 V-AAP-NSM himself , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM , He that is without sin G361 A-NSM among you G5216 P-2GP , let him first G4413 A-NSM cast G906 V-2AAM-3S a stone G3037 N-ASM at G1909 PREP her G846 P-ASF .
8 And G2532 CONJ again G3825 ADV he stooped G2955 V-AAP-NSM down G2736 PREP , and wrote G1125 V-IAI-3S on G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF ground G1093 N-ASF .
9 And G1161 CONJ they which heard G191 V-AAP-NPM it , being G2532 CONJ convicted G1651 V-PPP-NPM by G5259 PREP their own conscience G4893 N-GSF , went out G1831 V-INI-3P one by one G1527 , beginning G756 V-AMP-NPM at G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPM eldest G4245 A-GPM , even unto G2193 CONJ the G3588 T-GPM last G2078 A-GPM : and G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM was left G2641 V-API-3S alone G3441 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF woman G1135 N-NSF standing G2476 in G1722 PREP the midst G3319 A-DSN .
10 When G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM had lifted up G352 V-AAP-NSM himself , and G2532 CONJ saw G2300 V-ADP-NSM none G3367 A-ASM but G4133 ADV the G3588 T-GSF woman G1135 N-GSF , he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Woman G1135 N-VSF , where G4226 PRT-I are G1526 V-PXI-3P those G1565 D-NPM thine G3588 T-NPM accusers G2725 N-NPM ? hath no man G3762 A-NSM condemned G2632 V-AAI-3S thee G4571 P-2AS ?
11 She G3588 T-NSF said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , No man G3762 A-NSM , Lord G2962 N-VSM . And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto her G846 P-DSF , Neither G3761 ADV do I G1473 P-1NS condemn G2632 V-PAI-1S thee G4571 P-2AS : go G4198 V-PNM-2S , and G2532 CONJ sin G264 V-PAM-2S no more G3371 ADV .
12 Then G3767 CONJ spake G2980 V-AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM again G3825 ADV unto them G846 P-DPM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S the G3588 T-NSN light G5457 N-NSN of G3588 T-GSM the G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM : he that followeth G190 V-PAP-NSM me G1698 P-1DS shall not G3364 walk G4043 V-AAS-3S in G1722 PREP darkness G4653 N-DSF , but G235 CONJ shall have G2192 V-FAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN light G5457 N-ASN of life G2222 N-GSF .
13 The G3588 T-NPM Pharisees G5330 N-NPM therefore G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Thou G4771 P-2NS bearest record G3140 V-PAI-2S of G4012 PREP thyself G4572 F-2GSM ; thy G3588 T-NSF record G3141 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S not G3756 PRT-N true G227 A-NSF .
14 Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Though G2579 COND-C I G1473 P-1NS bear record G3140 V-PAS-1S of G4012 PREP myself G1683 F-1GSM , yet my G3588 T-NSF record G3141 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G227 A-NSF : for G3754 CONJ I know G1492 V-RAI-1S whence G4159 ADV-I I came G2064 V-2AAI-1S , and G2532 CONJ whither G4226 PRT-I I go G5217 V-PAI-1S ; but G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP cannot tell G1492 V-RAI-2P whence G4159 ADV-I I come G2064 V-PNI-1S , and G2532 CONJ whither G4226 PRT-I I go G5217 V-PAI-1S .
15 Ye G5210 P-2NP judge G2919 V-PAI-2P after G2596 PREP the G3588 T-ASF flesh G4561 N-ASF ; I G1473 P-1NS judge G2919 V-PAI-1S no man G3762 A-ASM .
16 And G2532 CONJ yet G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND I G1473 P-1NS judge G2919 V-PAS-1S , my G3588 T-NSF judgment G2920 N-NSF is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G227 A-NSF : for G3754 CONJ I am G1510 V-PXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N alone G3441 A-NSM , but G235 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF Father G3962 N-NSM that sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM me G3165 P-1AS .
17 It is G2532 CONJ also G1161 CONJ written G1125 V-RPI-3S in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DSM law G3551 N-DSM , that G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF testimony G3141 N-NSF of two G1417 A-NUI men G444 N-GPM is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G227 A-NSF .
18 I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S one that bear witness G3140 V-PAP-NSM of G4012 PREP myself G1683 F-1GSM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM that G3588 T-NSM sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM me G3165 P-1AS beareth witness G3140 V-PAI-3S of G4012 PREP me G1700 P-1GS .
19 Then G3767 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P they unto him G846 P-DSM , Where G4226 PRT-I is G2076 V-PXI-3S thy G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM ? Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S , Ye neither G3777 CONJ know G1492 V-RAI-2P me G1691 P-1AS , nor G3777 CONJ my G3588 T-ASM Father G3962 N-ASM : if G1487 COND ye had known G1492 V-LAI-2P me G1691 P-1AS , ye should have known G1492 V-LAI-2P my G3588 T-ASM Father G3962 N-ASM also G2532 CONJ .
20 These G3588 T-APN words G4487 N-APN spake G2980 V-AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN treasury G1049 N-DSN , as he taught G1321 V-PAP-NSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN : and G2532 CONJ no man G3762 A-NSM laid hands on G4084 V-AAI-3S him G846 P-ASM ; for G3754 CONJ his G3588 T-NSF hour G5610 N-NSF was not yet G3768 ADV come G2064 V-LAI-3S .
21 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM again G3825 ADV unto them G846 P-DPM , I G1473 P-1NS go my way G5217 V-PAI-1S , and G2532 CONJ ye shall seek G2212 V-FAI-2P me G3165 P-1AS , and G2532 CONJ shall die G599 V-FDI-2P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DSF sins G266 N-DSF : whither G3699 ADV I G1473 P-1NS go G5217 V-PAI-1S , ye G5210 P-2NP cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P come G2064 V-2AAN .
22 Then G3767 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P the G3588 T-NPM Jews G2453 A-NPM , Will G3385 PRT-I he kill G615 V-FAI-3S himself G1438 F-3ASM ? because G3754 CONJ he saith G3004 V-PAI-3S , Whither G3699 ADV I G1473 P-1NS go G5217 V-PAI-1S , ye G5210 P-2NP cannot G1410 V-PNI-2P come G2064 V-2AAN .
23 And G2532 CONJ he said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P from G1537 PREP beneath G2736 ADV ; I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S from G1537 PREP above G507 ADV : ye G5210 P-2NP are G2075 V-PXI-2P of G1537 PREP this G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM ; I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S not G3756 PRT-N of G1537 PREP this G3588 T-GSM world G2889 N-GSM .
24 I said G2036 V-2AAI-1S therefore G3767 CONJ unto you G5213 P-2DP , that G3754 CONJ ye shall die G599 V-FDI-2P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF sins G266 N-DPF : for G1063 CONJ if G1437 COND ye believe G4100 V-AAS-2P not G3361 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S he , ye shall die G599 V-FDI-2P in G1722 PREP your G3588 T-DPF sins G266 N-DPF .
25 Then G3767 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3P they unto him G846 P-DSM , Who G5101 I-NSM art G1488 V-PXI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS ? And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Even G2532 CONJ the same that G3748 I said G2980 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP from the G3588 T-ASF beginning G746 N-ASF .
26 I have G2192 V-PAI-1S many things G4183 A-APN to say G2980 V-PAN and G2532 CONJ to judge G2919 V-PAN of G4012 PREP you G5216 P-2GP : but G235 CONJ he that sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM me G3165 P-1AS is G2076 V-PXI-3S true G227 A-NSM ; and I G2504 P-1NS-C speak G3004 V-PAI-1S to G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASM world G2889 N-ASM those things G5023 D-APN which G3739 R-APN I have heard G191 V-AAI-1S of G3844 PREP him G846 P-GSM .
27 They understood G1097 V-2AAI-3P not G3756 PRT-N that G3754 CONJ he spake G3004 V-IAI-3S to them G846 P-DPM of G3588 T-ASM the G3588 T-ASM Father G3962 N-ASM .
28 Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , When G3752 CONJ ye have lifted up G5312 V-AAS-2P the G3588 T-ASM Son G5207 N-ASM of man G444 N-GSM , then G5119 ADV shall ye know G1097 V-FDI-2P that G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS am G1510 V-PXI-1S he , and G2532 CONJ that I do G4160 V-PAI-1S nothing G3762 A-ASN of G575 PREP myself G1683 F-1GSM ; but G235 CONJ as G2531 ADV my G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM hath taught G1321 V-AAI-3S me G3165 P-1AS , I speak G2980 V-PAI-1S these things G5023 D-APN .
29 And G2532 CONJ he that sent G3992 V-AAP-NSM me G3165 P-1AS is G2076 V-PXI-3S with G3326 PREP me G1700 P-1GS : the G3588 T-NSM Father G3962 N-NSM hath not G3756 PRT-N left G863 V-AAI-3S me G3165 P-1AS alone G3441 A-ASM ; for G3754 CONJ I G1473 P-1NS do G4160 V-PAI-1S always G3842 ADV those things that please G701 A-APN him G846 P-DSM .
30 As he G846 P-GSM spake G2980 V-PAP-GSM these words G5023 D-APN , many G4183 A-NPM believed G4100 V-AAI-3P on G1519 PREP him G846 P-ASM .
31 Then G3767 CONJ said G3004 V-IAI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM to G4314 PREP those G3588 T-APM Jews G2453 A-APM which believed G4100 V-RAP-APM on him G846 P-DSM , If G1437 COND ye G5210 P-2NP continue G3306 V-AAS-2P in G1722 PREP my G3588 T-DSM word G3056 N-DSM , then are G2075 V-PXI-2P ye my G3450 P-1GS disciples G3101 N-NPM indeed G230 ADV ;
32 And G2532 CONJ ye shall know G1097 V-FDI-2P the G3588 T-ASF truth G225 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NSF truth G225 N-NSF shall make you free G1659 V-FAI-3S .
33 They answered G611 V-ADI-3P him G846 P-DSM , We be G2070 V-PXI-1P Abraham G11 N-PRI \'s seed G4690 N-NSN , and G2532 CONJ were never in bondage G1398 V-RAI-1P to any man G3762 A-DSM : how G4459 ADV-I sayest G3004 V-PAI-2S thou G4771 P-2NS , Ye shall be made G1096 V-FDI-2P free G1658 A-NPM ?
34 Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-ADI-3S them G846 P-DPM , Verily G281 HEB , verily G281 HEB , I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , Whosoever G3588 T-NSM committeth G4160 V-PAP-NSM sin G266 N-ASF is G2076 V-PXI-3S the G3588 T-GSF servant G1401 N-NSM of sin G266 N-GSF .
35 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NSM servant G1401 N-NSM abideth G3306 V-PAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF house G3614 N-DSF forever G1519 PREP : but the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM abideth G3306 V-PAI-3S ever G1519 PREP .
36 If G1437 COND the G3588 T-NSM Son G5207 N-NSM therefore G3767 CONJ shall make you free G1659 V-AAS-3S , ye shall be G2071 V-FXI-2P free G1658 A-NPM indeed G3689 ADV .
37 I know G1492 V-RAI-1S that G3754 CONJ ye are G2075 V-PXI-2P Abraham G11 N-PRI \'s seed G4690 N-NSN ; but G235 CONJ ye seek G2212 V-PAI-2P to kill G615 V-AAN me G3165 P-1AS , because G3754 CONJ my G3588 T-NSM word G3056 N-NSM hath no place G5562 V-PAI-3S in G1722 PREP you G5213 P-2DP .
38 I G1473 P-1NS speak G2980 V-PAI-1S that which G3739 R-ASN I have seen G3708 V-RAI-1S with G3844 PREP my G3588 T-DSM Father G3962 N-DSM : and G2532 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP do G4160 V-PAI-2P that which G3739 R-ASN ye have G3767 CONJ seen G3708 V-RAI-2P with G3844 PREP your G3588 T-DSM father G3962 N-DSM .
39 They answered G611 V-ADI-3P and G2532 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , Abraham G11 N-PRI is G2076 V-PXI-3S our G3588 T-NSM father G3962 N-NSM . Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , If G1487 COND ye G3588 T-GSM were G2258 V-IXI-2P Abraham G11 N-PRI \'s children G5043 N-NPN , ye would do G4160 V-IAI-2P the G3588 T-APN works G2041 N-APN of Abraham G11 N-PRI .
40 But G1161 CONJ now G3568 ADV ye seek G2212 V-PAI-2P to kill G615 V-AAN me G3165 P-1AS , a man G444 N-ASM that G3739 R-NSM hath told G2980 V-RAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP the G3588 T-ASF truth G225 N-ASF , which G3739 R-ASF I have heard G191 V-AAI-1S of G3588 T-GSM God G2316 N-GSM : this G5124 D-ASN did G4160 V-AAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N Abraham G11 N-PRI .
41 Ye G5210 P-2NP do G4160 V-PAI-2P the G3588 T-APN deeds G2041 N-APN of your G5216 P-2GP father . Then G3767 CONJ said G2036 V-2AAI-3P they to him G846 P-DSM , We G2249 P-1NP be not G3756 PRT-N born G1080 V-RPI-1P of G1537 PREP fornication G4202 N-GSF ; we have G2192 V-PAI-1P one G1520 A-ASM Father G3962 N-GSM , even God G2316 N-ASM .
