1 आणखी एके दिवशी देवपुत्र परमेश्वराला भेटायला आले. त्यांच्याबरोबर सैतानही होता. सैतान परमेश्वराला भेटायला आला होता.
2 2 परमेश्वर सैतानाला म्हणाला, “तू कुठे गेला होतास?”सैतान परमेश्वराला उत्तर देत म्हणाला, “मी पृथ्वीवरच इकडे तिकडे भटकत होतो.”
3 3 नंतर परमेश्वर सैतानाला म्हणाला, “माझा सेवक ईयोब याच्याकडे तू लक्ष देत होतास का? सर्व पृथ्वीवर त्याच्यासारखा कोणीही नाही. तो खरोखरच फार चांगला व विश्वासू आहे. तो देवाची भक्ती करतो. तो वाईट गोष्टींपासून दूर राहातो. तू मला निष्कारण त्याच्या जवळच्या सर्व गोष्टींचा नाश करायला सांगितलेस आणि तरीही तो विश्वासू राहिला आहे.”
4 4 सैतानाने उत्तर दिले, “कातडीला कातडीमनुष्य जिवंत राहाण्यासाठी सर्व काही देऊ शकतो.
5 5 परंतु जर तू तुझ्या शक्तीचा वापर त्याला शारीरिक इजा करण्यासाठी केलास तर तो तुला तुझ्या तोंडावर शापदेईल.”
6 6 तेव्हा परमेश्वर सैतानाला म्हणाला, “ठीक आहे. तो आता तुझ्या हाती आहे. मात्र त्याला मारण्याची परवानगी मी तुला देत नाही.”
7 7 मग सैतान परमेश्वराकडून निघाला. त्याने ईयोबाला ठणकणारी गळवे दिली. ईयोबच्या सर्वांगावर तळव्यापासून डोक्यापर्यंत गळवे होती.
8 8 म्हणून ईयोब कचऱ्याच्या ढीगाजवळ बसला. आपली गळवे खाजविण्यासाठी त्याने खापराचा तुकडा वापरला.
9 9 ईयोबची बायको त्याला म्हणाली, “तू अजूनही देवाशी निष्ठावान आहेस का? तू देवाला शाप देऊन मरुन का जात नाहीस?”
10 10 ईयोबने बायकोला उत्तर दिले, “तू एखाद्या मूर्ख बाईसारखी बोलत आहेस. देव जेव्हा आपल्याला चांगल्या गोष्टी देतो तेव्हा आपण त्यांचा स्वीकार करतो. तसाच आपण संकटांचाही स्वीकार तक्रार न करता केला पाहिजे.” त्याच्या संकटकाळातसुध्दा ईयोबने पाप केले नाही. तो देवाच्याविरुध्द बोलला नाही.
11 11 ईयोबचे तीन मित्र म्हणजे अलीफज तेमानी, बिल्दद शूही आणि शोफर नामाथी या तिन्ही मित्रांनी ईयोब वर आलेल्या संकटांविषयी ऐकले होते. ते आपली घरे सोडून एका ठिकाणी भेटले. ईयोबला भेटून त्याला सहानुभूती दाखवावी व त्याचे सांत्वन करावे याबद्दल त्यांचे एकमत झाले.
12 12 परंतु बऱ्याच अंतरावरुन जेव्हा त्यांनी ईयोबला पाहिले तेव्हा तो ईयोबच आहे याची त्यांना खात्री वाटेना. तो खूप वेगळा दिसत होता. त्यांनी मोठ्याने रडायला सुरुवात केली. आपले दु:ख प्रकट करण्यासाठी त्यांनी आपले कपडे फाडले आणि धूळ आपल्या डोक्यावर उडवून घेतली.
13 13 नंतर तिन्ही मित्र सात दिवस व सात रात्री ईयोब बरोबर बसून राहिले. ईयोबशी कुणी एक शब्दही बोलले नाही कारण ईयोब किती सहन करत आहे ते त्यांना दिसत होते.

3 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto H413 Satan, H7854 Hast thou considered H7760 H3820 H413 my servant H5650 Job, H347 that H3588 there is none H369 like him H3644 in the earth, H776 a perfect H8535 and an upright H3477 man, H376 one that feareth H3373 God, H430 and escheweth H5493 evil H4480 H7451 ? and still H5750 he holdeth fast H2388 his integrity, H8538 although thou movedst H5496 me against him , to destroy H1104 him without cause. 4 And Satan H7854 answered the LORD, H3068 and said, H559 Skin for skin H5785 H1157, H5785 yea, all H3605 that H834 a man H376 hath will he give H5414 for H1157 his life. H5315
5 But H199 put forth H7971 thine hand H3027 now, H4994 and touch H5060 H413 his bone H6106 and his flesh, H1320 and H518 he will curse H1288 thee to H413 thy face. H6440
6 And the LORD H3068 said H559 unto H413 Satan, H7854 Behold, H2009 he is in thine hand; H3027 but H389 save H8104 H853 his life. H5315
7 So went Satan forth H3318 H7854 from H4480 H854 the presence H6440 of the LORD, H3068 and smote H5221 H853 Job H347 with sore H7451 boils H7822 from the sole H4480 H3709 of his foot H7272 unto H5704 his crown. H6936
8 And he took H3947 him a potsherd H2789 to scrape himself H1623 withal ; and he H1931 sat down H3427 among H8432 the ashes. H665
9 Then said H559 his wife H802 unto him , Dost thou still H5750 retain H2388 thine integrity H8538 ? curse H1288 God, H430 and die. H4191
10 But he said H559 unto H413 her , Thou speakest H1696 as one H259 of the foolish women H5036 speaketh. H1696 What H1571 ? shall we receive H6901 H853 good H2896 at the hand H4480 H854 of God, H430 and shall we not H3808 receive H6901 evil H7451 ? In all H3605 this H2063 did not H3808 Job H347 sin H2398 with his lips. H8193
11 Now when Job's H347 three H7969 friends H7453 heard H8085 H853 of all H3605 this H2063 evil H7451 that was come H935 upon H5921 him , they came H935 every one H376 from his own place H4480 H4725 ; Eliphaz H464 the Temanite, H8489 and Bildad H1085 the Shuhite, H7747 and Zophar H6691 the Naamathite: H5284 for they had made an appointment H3259 together H3162 to come H935 to mourn H5110 with him and to comfort H5162 him.
