1 Chronicles 19:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Nahash was king of Ammon. After he died, his son became the next king after him.
2 David thought, "I'm going to be kind to Hanun. His father Nahash was kind to me." So David sent messengers to Hanun. He wanted them to tell Hanun how sad he was that Hanun's father had died. David's messengers went to the land of Ammon. They told Hanun how sad David was.
3 The Ammonite nobles spoke to Hanun. They said, "David has sent messengers to tell you he is sad. They say he wants to honor your father. But the real reason they've come is to look the land over. They want to destroy it."
4 So Hanun grabbed hold of David's men. He shaved them. He cut their clothes off just below the waist and left them half naked. Then he sent them away.
5 Someone came and told David what had happened to his men. So David sent messengers to them because they were filled with shame. King David said to them, "Stay at Jericho until your beards grow out again. Then come back here."
6 The Ammonites realized that what they had done had made David very angry with them. So Hanun and the Ammonites got 37 tons of silver. They used it to hire chariots and chariot riders from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah.
7 They hired 32,000 chariots and riders. They also hired the king of Maacah and his troops. All of them came out and camped near Medeba. At the same time the Ammonites brought their troops together from their towns. Then they marched out to fight.
8 David heard about it. So he sent Joab out with the entire army of Israel's fighting men.
9 The Ammonites marched out. They took up their battle positions at the entrance to their city. The kings who came to help them gathered their troops together in the open country.
10 Joab saw that there were lines of soldiers in front of him and behind him. So he chose some of the best troops in Israel. He sent them to march out against the Arameans.
11 He put the rest of the men under the command of his brother Abishai. They were sent to march out against the Ammonites.
12 Joab said, "Suppose the Arameans are too strong for me. Then you must come and help me. But suppose the Ammonites are too strong for you. Then I'll come and help you.
13 Be strong. Let's be brave as we fight for our people and the cities of our God. The Lord will do what he thinks is best."
14 Then Joab and the troops who were with him marched out to attack the Arameans. They ran away from him.
15 The Ammonites saw that the Arameans were running away. So they also ran away from Joab's brother Abishai. They went inside the city. Then Joab went back to Jerusalem.
16 The Arameans saw that they had been driven away by Israel. So they sent messengers to get some Arameans from east of the Euphrates River. The Arameans were under the command of Shophach. He was the commander of Hadadezer's army.
17 David was told about it. So he gathered the whole army of Israel together. They went across the Jordan River. David marched out against the Arameans. He lined up his soldiers opposite them. He lined them up to meet the Arameans in battle. The Arameans began to fight against him.
18 But then they ran away from Israel. David killed 7,000 of their chariot riders. He killed 40,000 of their soldiers who were on foot. He also killed Shophach, the commander of their army.
19 The people who were under the rule of Hadadezer saw that Israel had won the battle over them. So they made a peace treaty with David. They were brought under his rule. After that, the Arameans wouldn't help the Ammonites anymore.
1 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP this H3651 ADV , that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 NMS of the children H1121 CMS-3MS of Ammon H5983 died H4191 W-VQY3MS , and his son H1121 CMS-3MS reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
2 And David H1732 said H559 W-VQY3MS , I will show H6213 VQY1MS kindness H2617 NMS unto H5973 PREP Hanun H2586 the son H1121 of Nahash H5176 , because H3588 CONJ his father H1 CMS-3MS showed H6213 VQQ3MS kindness H2617 NMS to H5973 me . And David H1732 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 to comfort H5162 him concerning H5921 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS . So the servants H5650 of David H1732 came H935 W-VQY3MP into H413 PREP the land H776 GFS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 to H413 PREP Hanun H2586 , to comfort H5162 him .
3 But the princes H8269 CMP of the children H1121 CMP of Ammon H5983 said H559 W-VQY3MP to Hanun H2586 , Thinkest H5869 thou that David H1732 doth honor H3513 thy father H1 NMS , that H3588 CONJ he hath sent H7971 VQQ3MS comforters H5162 unto thee ? are not H3808 I-NADV his servants H5650 come H935 VQQ3MP unto H413 thee for H5668 B-NMS to search H2713 , and to overthrow H2015 , and to spy out H7270 the land H776 D-GFS ?
4 Wherefore Hanun H2586 took H3947 W-VQY3MS David H1732 \'s servants H5650 , and shaved H1548 them , and cut off H3772 their garments H4063 in the midst H2677 hard by H5704 PREP their buttocks H4667 , and sent them away H7971 .
5 Then there went H1980 W-VQY3MP certain , and told H5046 David H1732 how H5921 PREP the men H376 were served . And he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to meet H7125 them : for H3588 CONJ the men H376 were H1961 VQQ3MP greatly H3966 ADV ashamed H3637 . And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Tarry H3427 at Jericho H3405 until H5704 PREP your beards H2206 be grown H6779 , and then return H7725 .
6 And when the children H1121 W-CMP of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP that H3588 CONJ they had made themselves odious H887 to H5973 PREP David H1732 , Hanun H2586 and the children H1121 W-CMP of Ammon H5983 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS a thousand H505 W-BMS talents H3603 CFS of silver H3701 NMS to hire H7936 them chariots H7393 and horsemen H6571 out of H4480 PREP Mesopotamia H763 , and out of H4480 PREP Syria H758 - maachah , and out of Zobah H6678 .
7 So they hired H7936 thirty H7970 W-MMP and two H8147 ONUM thousand H505 W-BMS chariots H7393 , and the king H4428 NMS of Maachah H4601 and his people H5971 ; who came H935 W-VQY3MP and pitched H2583 before H6440 L-CMP Medeba H4311 . And the children H1121 W-CMP of Ammon H5983 gathered themselves together H622 from their cities H5892 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP to battle H4421 .
8 And when David H1732 heard H8085 of it , he sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Joab H3097 , and all H3605 NMS the host H6635 NMS of the mighty men H1368 .
9 And the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 came out H3318 W-VQY3MP , and put the battle in array H6186 W-VQY3MP before the gate H6607 CMS of the city H5892 D-GFS : and the kings H4428 WD-NMP that H834 RPRO were come H935 VQQ3MP were by themselves H905 L-CMS-3MP in the field H7704 .
10 Now when Joab H3097 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ the battle H6440 CMP was set H1961 VQQ3FS against H413 PREP-3MS him before H6440 NMP and behind H268 W-NMS , he chose H977 W-VQY3MS out of all H3605 M-CMS the choice H977 W-VQY3MS of Israel H3478 , and put them in array H6186 against H7125 L-VQFC the Syrians H758 .
11 And the rest H3499 of the people H5971 he delivered H5414 VQQ3MS unto the hand H3027 B-CFS of Abishai H52 his brother H251 CMS-3MS , and they set themselves in array H6186 against H7125 L-VQFC the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
12 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART the Syrians H758 EMS be too strong H2388 for H4480 M-PREP-1MS me , then thou shalt help H1961 W-VQQ2MS me : but if H518 PART the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 be too strong H2388 for H4480 PREP-2MS thee , then I will help H3467 thee .
13 Be of good courage H2388 , and let us behave ourselves valiantly H2388 for H1157 W-PREP our people H5971 , and for H1157 W-PREP the cities H5892 of our God H430 : and let the LORD H3068 W-EDS do H6213 VQY3MS that which is good H2896 D-NMS in his sight H5869 B-CMD-3MS .
14 So Joab H3097 and the people H5971 that H834 RPRO were with H5973 PREP-3MS him drew nigh H5066 before H6440 L-CMP the Syrians H758 EMS unto the battle H4421 ; and they fled H5127 before H6440 L-CMP him .
15 And when the children H1121 W-CMP of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 VQQ3MP that H3588 CONJ the Syrians H758 EMS were fled H5127 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP likewise H1571 CONJ fled H5127 before H6440 M-CMP Abishai H52 his brother H251 CMS-3MS , and entered H935 W-VQY3MP into the city H5892 . Then Joab H3097 came H935 W-VQY3MS to Jerusalem H3389 .
16 And when the Syrians H758 EMS saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ they were put to the worse H5062 before H6440 L-CMP Israel H3478 , they sent H7971 messengers H4397 , and drew forth the Syrians H758 EMS that H834 RPRO were beyond H5676 M-CMS the river H5104 D-NMS : and Shophach H7780 the captain H8269 of the host H6635 of Hadarezer H1928 went before H6440 L-CMP them .
17 And it was told H5046 David H1732 ; and he gathered H622 all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 , and passed over H5674 W-VQY3MS Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS upon H413 PREP-3MS them , and set the battle in array H6186 against H413 PREP-3MS them . So when David H1732 had put the battle in array H6186 against H7125 L-VQFC the Syrians H758 EMS , they fought H3898 with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
18 But the Syrians H758 EMS fled H5127 before H6440 ML-CMP Israel H3478 ; and David H1732 slew H2026 of the Syrians H758 seven H7651 RMS thousand H505 MMP men which fought in chariots H7393 , and forty H705 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS footmen H376 NMS , and killed H4191 Shophach H7780 the captain H8269 of the host H6635 .
19 And when the servants H5650 of Hadarezer H1928 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP that H3588 CONJ they were put to the worse H5062 before H6440 L-CMP Israel H3478 , they made peace H7999 with H5973 PREP David H1732 , and became his servants H5647 : neither H3808 W-NPAR would H14 the Syrians H758 EMS help H3467 the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 any more H5750 ADV .
