1 Kings 12:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Rehoboam went to Shechem. All of the people of Israel had gone there to make him king.
2 Jeroboam heard about it. He was the son of Nebat. Jeroboam was still in Egypt at that time. He had gone there for safety. He wanted to get away from King Solomon. But now he returned from Egypt.
3 So the people sent for Jeroboam. He and the whole community of Israel went to Rehoboam. They said to him,
4 "Your father put a heavy load on our shoulders. But now make our hard work easier. Make the heavy load on us lighter. Then we'll serve you."
5 Rehoboam answered, "Go away for three days. Then come back to me." So the people went away.
6 King Rehoboam asked the elders for advice. They had served his father Solomon while he was still living. Rehoboam asked them, "What advice can you give me? How should I answer these people?"
7 They replied, "Serve them today. Give them what they are asking for. Then they'll always serve you."
8 But Rehoboam didn't accept the advice the elders gave him. Instead, he asked for advice from the young men who had grown up with him and were now serving him.
9 He asked them, "What's your advice? How should I answer these people? They say to me, 'Make the load your father put on our shoulders lighter.' "
10 The young men who had grown up with him gave their answer. They replied, "These people say to you, 'Your father put a heavy load on our shoulders. Make it lighter.' Tell them, 'My little finger is stronger than my father's legs.
11 My father put a heavy load on your shoulders. But I'll make it even heavier. My father beat you with whips. But I'll beat you with bigger whips.' "
12 Three days later Jeroboam and all of the people returned to Rehoboam. That's because the king had said, "Come back to me in three days."
13 The king answered the people in a mean way. He didn't accept the advice the elders had given him.
14 Instead, he followed the advice of the young men. He said, "My father put a heavy load on your shoulders. But I'll make it even heavier. My father beat you with whips. But I'll beat you with bigger whips."
15 So the king didn't listen to the people. That's because the Lord had planned it that way. What he had said through Ahijah came true. Ahijah had spoken the Lord's message to Jeroboam, the son of Nebat. Ahijah was from Shiloh.
16 All of the people of Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them. So they answered the king. They said, "We don't have any share in David's royal family. We don't have any share in Jesse's son. People of Israel, let's go back to our homes. David's royal family, take care of your own kingdom!" So the people of Israel went home.
17 But Rehoboam still ruled over the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah.
18 Adoniram was in charge of those who were forced to work hard for King Rehoboam. The king sent him out among all of the Israelites. But they killed him by throwing stones at him. King Rehoboam was able to get away in his chariot. He escaped to Jerusalem.
19 Israel has refused to follow the royal family of David to this very day.
20 All of the people of Israel heard that Jeroboam had returned. They sent for him. They wanted him to meet with the whole community. Then they made him king over the entire nation of Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained true to David's royal family.
21 Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem. He brought together 180,000 fighting men from the royal house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin. He had decided to make war against the royal house of Israel. Solomon's son Rehoboam wanted his fighting men to get the kingdom of Israel back for him.
22 But a message from God came to Shemaiah. He was a man of God. God said to him,
23 "Speak to Solomon's son Rehoboam, the king of Judah. Speak to the royal house of Judah and Benjamin. Also speak to the rest of the people. Tell all of them,
24 'The Lord says, "Do not go up to fight against the Israelites. They are your relatives. I want every one of you to go back home. Things have happened exactly the way I planned them." ' " So the fighting men obeyed the Lord's message. They went home again, just as he had ordered.
25 Jeroboam built up the walls of Shechem. It was in the hill country of Ephraim. Jeroboam made Shechem his home. From there he went out and built up Peniel.
26 Jeroboam thought, "My kingdom still isn't secure. It could very easily go back to the royal family of David.
27 Suppose the people of Israel go up to Jerusalem to offer sacrifices at the Lord's temple. If they do, they will again decide to follow Rehoboam as their master. Then they'll kill me. They'll return to King Rehoboam. He is king of Judah."
28 So King Jeroboam asked for advice. Then he made two golden statues that looked like calves. He said to the people, "It's too hard for you to go up to Jerusalem. Israel, here are your gods who brought you up out of Egypt."
29 He set up one statue in Bethel. He set up the other one in Dan.
30 What Jeroboam did was sinful. And it caused Israel to sin. The people even went all the way to Dan to worship the statue that was there.
31 Jeroboam built temples for worshiping gods on high places. He appointed all kinds of people as priests. They didn't even have to be Levites.
32 He established a feast. It was on the 15th day of the eighth month. He wanted to make it like the Feast of Booths that was held in Judah. Jeroboam built an altar at Bethel. He offered sacrifices on it. He sacrificed to the calves he had made. He also put priests in Bethel. He did it at the high places he had made.
33 He offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. It was on the 15th day of the eighth month. That's the month he had chosen for it. So he established the feast for the people of Israel. And he went up to the altar to sacrifice offerings.

2 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 , who H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was yet H5750 in Egypt H4714 , heard H8085 of RPRO it RPRO , ( RPRO for RPRO he was fled H1272 from the presence H6440 M-CMP of king H4428 D-NMS Solomon H8010 MMS , and Jeroboam H3379 dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS in Egypt H4714 ; )
3 That they sent H7971 and called H7121 W-VQY3MP him . And Jeroboam H3379 and all H3605 W-CMS the congregation H6951 of Israel H3478 came H935 , and spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP Rehoboam H7346 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
4 Thy father H1 NMS made our yoke H5923 grievous H7185 VHQ3MS : now H6258 ADV therefore make thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS the grievous H7186 service H5656 of thy father H1 NMS , and his heavy H3515 yoke H5923 which H834 RPRO he put H5414 VQQ3MS upon H5921 PREP-1MP us , lighter H7043 , and we will serve H5647 thee .
5 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , Depart H1980 VQI2MP yet H5750 ADV for three H7969 NFS days H3117 NMP , then come again H7725 to H413 me . And the people H5971 D-NMS departed H1980 W-VQY3MP .
6 And king H4428 D-NMS Rehoboam H7346 consulted H3289 with H854 PREP the old men H2205 , that H834 RPRO stood H5975 VQPMP before H6440 CMP Solomon H8010 MMS his father H1 CMS-3MS while H1961 VQQ3MP he yet lived H2416 AMS , and said H559 L-VQFC , How H349 do ye H859 PPRO-2MS advise H3289 that I may answer H7725 L-VHFC this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 ?
7 And they spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , If H518 PART thou wilt be H1961 VQY2MS a servant H5650 NMS unto this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 this day H3117 D-AMS , and wilt serve H5647 them , and answer H6030 them , and speak H1696 good H2896 words H1697 NMP to H413 PREP-3MP them , then they will be H1961 W-VQQ3MS thy servants H5650 NMP forever H3117 D-NMP .
8 But he forsook H5800 the counsel H6098 CFS of the old men H2205 , which H834 RPRO they had given H3289 him , and consulted H3289 with H854 PREP-3MS the young men H3206 that H834 RPRO were grown up H1431 with H854 PREP-3MS him , and which H834 RPRO stood H5975 before H6440 him :
9 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MP them , What H4100 IGAT counsel H3289 give ye H859 PPRO-2MS that we may answer H7725 this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , who H834 RPRO have spoken H1696 to H413 PREP-1MS me , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Make the yoke H5923 which H834 RPRO thy father H1 NMS did put H5414 VQQ3MS upon H5921 us lighter H7043 ?
10 And the young men H3206 that H834 RPRO were grown up H1431 with H854 PREP-3MS him spoke H1696 W-VPY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thus H3541 shalt thou speak H559 VQY2MS unto this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 that H834 RPRO spoke H1696 unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thy father H1 NMS made our yoke H5923 heavy H3513 , but make thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS it lighter H7043 unto H5921 us ; thus H3541 shalt thou say H1696 unto H413 PREP-3MP them , My little H6995 finger shall be thicker H5666 than my father H1 NMS \'s loins H4975 .
11 And now H6258 W-ADV whereas my father H1 CMS-1MS did lade H6006 you with a heavy H3515 VQS3MS yoke H5923 , I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will add H3254 VHY1MS to H5921 PREP-2MP your yoke H5923 : my father H1 CMS-1MS hath chastised H3256 you with whips H7752 , but I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will chastise H3256 you with scorpions H6137 .
12 So Jeroboam H3379 and all H3605 W-CMS the people H5971 came H935 to H413 PREP Rehoboam H7346 the third H7992 D-ONUM day H3117 B-AMS , as H834 K-RPRO the king H4428 D-NMS had appointed H1696 VPQ3MS , saying H559 L-VQFC , Come H7725 to H413 PREP me again the third H7992 day H3117 B-AMS .
13 And the king H4428 D-NMS answered H6030 W-VQY3MS the people H5971 roughly H7186 , and forsook H5800 the old men H2205 \'s counsel H6098 CFS that H834 RPRO they gave H3289 him ;
14 And spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS to H413 PREP-3MP them after the counsel H6098 of the young men H3206 , saying H559 L-VQFC , My father H1 CMS-1MS made your yoke H5923 heavy H3513 , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will add H3254 to H5921 PREP your yoke H5923 : my father H1 CMS-1MS also chastised H3256 you with whips H7752 , but I H589 W-PPRO-1MS will chastise H3256 you with scorpions H6137 .
15 Wherefore the king H4428 D-NMS hearkened H8085 not H3808 W-NPAR unto H413 PREP the people H5971 ; for H3588 CONJ the cause H5438 was H1961 VQQ3FS from M-PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , that H4616 L-CONJ he might perform H6965 his saying H1697 , which H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 VPQ3MS by H3027 B-CFS Ahijah H281 the Shilonite H7888 unto H413 PREP Jeroboam H3379 the son H1121 of Nebat H5028 .
16 So when all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 saw H7200 W-VIY3MS that H3588 CONJ the king H4428 D-NMS hearkened H8085 not H3808 ADV unto H413 PREP-3MP them , the people H5971 answered H7725 the king H4428 D-NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , What H4100 IPRO portion H2506 CMS have we in David H1732 ? neither H3808 ADV have we inheritance H5159 NFS in the son H1121 of Jesse H3448 : to your tents H168 , O Israel H3478 : now H6258 ADV see H7200 W-VIY3MS to thine own house H1004 , David H1732 MMS . So Israel H3478 departed H1980 W-VQY3MS unto their tents H168 .
17 But as for the children H1121 W-CMP of Israel H3478 which dwelt H3427 in the cities H5892 B-CFP of Judah H3063 , Rehoboam H7346 reigned H4427 over H5921 PREP-3MP them .
18 Then king H4428 D-NMS Rehoboam H7346 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Adoram H151 , who H834 RPRO was over H5921 PREP the tribute H4522 ; and all H3605 CMS Israel H3478 stoned H7275 him with stones H68 GFS , that he died H4191 . Therefore king H4428 Rehoboam H7346 made speed H553 to get him up H5927 L-VQFC to his chariot H4818 , to flee H5127 to Jerusalem H3389 .
19 So Israel H3478 rebelled H6586 against the house H1004 B-CMS of David H1732 MMS unto H5704 PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 D-AMS .
20 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 heard H8085 that H3588 CONJ Jeroboam H3379 was come again H7725 VQQ3MS , that they sent H7971 and called H7121 W-VQY3MP him unto H413 PREP the congregation H5712 , and made him king H4427 over H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS Israel H3478 : there was H1961 VQQ3MS none H3808 NADV that followed H310 PREP the house H1004 CMS of David H1732 MMS , but H2108 the tribe H7626 of Judah H3063 only H905 .
21 And when Rehoboam H7346 was come H935 to Jerusalem H3389 , he assembled H6950 all H3605 NMS the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 , with H854 the tribe H7626 CMS of Benjamin H1144 , a hundred H3967 MFS and fourscore H8084 W-MMP thousand H505 W-BMS chosen H977 men , which were warriors H6213 , to fight H3898 against H5973 PREP the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 , to bring H7725 L-VHFC the kingdom H4410 again to Rehoboam H7346 the son H1121 of Solomon H8010 .
22 But the word H1697 CMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MS came H1961 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Shemaiah H8098 the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
23 Speak H559 unto H413 PREP Rehoboam H7346 , the son H1121 of Solomon H8010 MMS , king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , and unto H413 PREP all H3605 NMS the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 and Benjamin H1144 , and to the remnant H3499 of the people H5971 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
24 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , Ye shall not H3808 ADV go up H5927 , nor H3808 W-NADV fight H3898 against H5973 PREP your brethren H251 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 : return H7725 every man H376 NMS to his house H1004 L-CMS-3MS ; for H3588 CONJ this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS is H1961 from me . They hearkened H8085 therefore to the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and returned H7725 W-VUY3MP to depart H1980 L-VQFC , according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
25 Then Jeroboam H3379 built H1129 W-VQY3MS Shechem H7927 LMS in mount H2022 Ephraim H669 , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS therein ; and went out H3318 W-VQY3MS from thence H8033 M-ADV , and built H1129 W-VQY3MS Penuel H6439 .
26 And Jeroboam H3379 said H559 W-VQY3MS in his heart H3820 , Now H6258 ADV shall the kingdom H4467 return H7725 VQY2MS to the house H1004 of David H1732 :
27 If H518 PART this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 go up H5927 VQY3MS to do H6213 L-VQFC sacrifice H2077 in the house H1004 B-CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS at Jerusalem H3389 , then shall the heart H3820 NMS of this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 turn again H7725 W-VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP their lord H113 , even unto H413 PREP Rehoboam H7346 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , and they shall kill H2026 me , and go again H7725 to H413 PREP Rehoboam H7346 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 .
28 Whereupon the king H4428 D-NMS took counsel H3289 , and made H6213 W-VQY3MS two H8147 ONUM calves H5695 of gold H2091 NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , It is too much H7227 AMS for you to go up H5927 to Jerusalem H3389 : behold H2009 IJEC thy gods H430 CMP-2MS , O Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO brought H5927 thee up out of the land H776 M-NFS of Egypt H4714 .
29 And he set H7760 W-VQY3MS the one H259 in Bethel H1008 , and the other H259 put H5414 VQQ3MS he in Dan H1835 .
30 And this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS became H1961 W-VQY3MS a sin H2403 : for the people H5971 went H1980 W-VQY3MP to worship before H6440 L-CMP the one H259 , even unto H5704 PREP Dan H1835 EFS .
31 And he made H6213 W-VQY3MS a house H1004 CMS of high places H1116 , and made H6213 W-VQY3MS priests H3548 of the lowest H7098 of the people H5971 , which H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP not H3808 ADV of the sons H1121 of Levi H3878 .
32 And Jeroboam H3379 ordained H6213 W-VQY3MS a feast H2282 in the eighth H8066 month H2320 BD-NMS , on the fifteenth H2568 day H3117 NMS of the month H2320 LD-NMS , like unto the feast H2282 that H834 RPRO is in Judah H3063 , and he offered H5927 W-VHY3MS upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS . So H3651 ADV did H6213 W-VQY3MS he in Bethel H1008 , sacrificing H2076 unto the calves H5695 that H834 RPRO he had made H6213 W-VQY3MS : and he placed H5975 in Bethel H1008 LFS the priests H3548 of the high places H1116 which H834 RPRO he had made H6213 W-VQY3MS .
33 So he offered H5927 W-VHY3MS upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS which H834 RPRO he had made H6213 W-VQY3MS in Bethel H1008 the fifteenth H2568 day H3117 NMS of the eighth H8066 month H2320 BD-NMS , even in the month H2320 BD-NMS which H834 RPRO he had devised H908 of his own heart H3820 ; and ordained H6213 W-VQY3MS a feast H2282 unto the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 : and he offered H5927 W-VHY3MS upon H5921 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS , and burnt incense H6999 .
