Numbers 20:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 In the first month the whole community of Israel arrived at the Desert of Zin. They stayed at Kadesh. Miriam died there. Her body was also buried there.
2 The people didn't have any water. So they gathered together to oppose Moses and Aaron.
3 They argued with Moses. They said, "We wish we had died when our people fell dead in front of the Lord.
4 "Why did you bring the Lord's people into this desert? We and our livestock will die here.
5 Why did you bring us up out of Egypt? Why did you bring us to this terrible place? It doesn't have any grain or figs. It doesn't have any grapes or pomegranates. There isn't even any water for us to drink!"
6 Moses and Aaron left the people. They went to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. There they fell with their faces to the ground. Then the glory of the Lord appeared to them.
7 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,
8 "Get your wooden staff. You and your brother Aaron gather the people together. Then speak to that rock while everyone is watching. It will pour out its water. You will bring water out of the rock for the community. Then they and their livestock can drink it."
9 So Moses took the wooden staff from the tent. He did just as the Lord had commanded him.
10 He and Aaron gathered the people together in front of the rock. Moses said to them, "Listen, you who refuse to obey! Do we have to bring water out of this rock for you?"
11 Then Moses raised his arm. He hit the rock twice with his staff. Water poured out. And the people and their livestock drank it.
12 But the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said, "You did not trust in me enough to honor me. You did not honor me as the holy God in front of the people of Israel. So you will not bring this community into the land I am giving them."
13 Those were the waters of Meribah. That's where the people of Israel argued with the Lord. And that's where he showed them he is holy.
14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. The messengers said, "The nation of Israel is your brother. They say, 'You know about all of the hard times we've had.
15 Long ago our people went down into Egypt. We lived there for many years. The Egyptians treated us and our people badly.
16 But we cried out to the Lord. He heard our cry. He sent an angel and brought us out of Egypt. " 'Now here we are at the town of Kadesh. It's on the edge of your territory.
17 Please let us pass through your country. We won't go through any field or vineyard. We won't drink water from any well. We'll travel along the king's highway. We won't turn to the right or the left. We'll just go straight through your territory.' "
18 But the people of Edom answered, "You can't pass through here. If you try to, we'll march out against you. We'll attack you with our swords."
19 The people of Israel replied, "We'll go along the main road. We and our livestock won't drink any of your water. If we do, we'll pay for it. We only want to walk through your country. That's all we ask."
20 Again the people of Edom answered, "You can't pass through here." Then the people of Edom came out against them. They came with a large and powerful army.
21 Edom refused to let Israel go through their territory. So Israel turned away from them.
22 The whole community of Israel started out from Kadesh. They arrived at Mount Hor.
23 It was near the border of Edom. There the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron. He said,
24 "Aaron will join the members of his family who have already died. He will not enter the land I am giving to the people of Israel. Both of you refused to obey my command. You did it at the waters of Meribah.
25 "So get Aaron and his son Eleazar. Take them up Mount Hor.
26 Take Aaron's official robes off him. Put them on his son Eleazar. Aaron will die on Mount Hor. He will join the members of his family who have already died."
27 Moses did just as the Lord had commanded. The three men went up Mount Hor while the whole community was watching.
28 Moses took Aaron's official robes off him. He put them on Aaron's son Eleazar. And Aaron died there on top of the mountain. Then Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain.
29 The whole community found out that Aaron had died. So the entire nation of Israel sobbed over him for 30 days.

2 And there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR water H4325 OMD for the congregation H5712 : and they gathered themselves together H6950 against H5921 PREP Moses H4872 and against H5921 PREP Aaron H175 .
3 And the people H5971 chided H7378 with H5973 PREP Moses H4872 , and spoke H559 W-VQY3MP , saying H559 L-VQFC , Would God H3863 that we had died H1478 when our brethren H251 died H1478 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS !
4 And why H4100 have ye brought up H935 the congregation H6951 of the Lord H3068 EDS into H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS wilderness H4057 D-NMS , that we H587 PPRO-1MP and our cattle H1165 should die H4191 L-VQFC there H8033 ADV ?
5 And wherefore H4100 have ye made us to come up H5927 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , to bring us in L-VHFC unto H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS evil H7451 D-AMS place H4725 D-NMS ? it is no H3808 NADV place H4725 CMS of seed H2233 NMS , or of figs H8384 , or of vines H1612 , or of pomegranates H7416 ; neither H369 ADV is there any water H4325 W-NMD to drink H8354 .
6 And Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 went H935 W-VQY3MS from the presence H6440 M-CMP of the assembly H6951 unto H413 PREP the door H6607 CMS of the tabernacle H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , and they fell H5307 W-VQY3MP upon H5921 PREP their faces H6440 CMP-3MP : and the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS appeared H7200 W-VNY3MS unto H413 PREP them .
7 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
8 Take H3947 VQI2MS the rod H4294 , and gather thou the assembly together H6950 , thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and Aaron H175 thy brother H251 CMS-2MS , and speak H1696 ye unto H413 PREP the rock H5553 before their eyes H5869 ; and it shall give forth H5414 W-VQQ3MS his water H4325 OMD , and thou shalt bring forth H3318 to them water H4325 OMD out of H4480 PREP the rock H5553 : so thou shalt give the congregation H5712 and their beasts H1165 drink H8248 .
9 And Moses H4872 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the rod H4294 from before H6440 ML-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , as H834 K-RPRO he commanded H6680 him .
10 And Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 gathered the congregation together H6950 before H413 PREP the rock H5553 , and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto them , Hear H8085 VQI2MP now H4994 IJEC , ye rebels H4784 ; must we fetch H3318 you water H4325 NMP out of H4480 I-PREP this H2088 D-PMS rock H5553 ?
11 And Moses H4872 lifted up H7311 his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , and with his rod H4294 he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS the rock H5553 twice H6471 : and the water H4325 OMD came out H3318 W-VQY3MP abundantly H7227 AMP , and the congregation H5712 drank H8354 , and their beasts H1165 also .
12 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 , Because H3282 ADV ye believed H539 me not H3808 NADV , to sanctify H6942 me in the eyes H5869 of the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , therefore H3651 L-ADV ye shall not H3808 NADV bring H935 this H2088 D-PMS congregation H6951 into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I have given H5414 VQQ1MS them .
13 This H1992 PPRO-3MP is the water H4325 of Meribah H4809 ; because H834 RPRO the children H1121 of Israel H3478 strove H7378 with H854 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and he was sanctified H6942 in them .
14 And Moses H4872 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 from Kadesh H6946 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS thy brother H251 CMS-2MS Israel H3478 , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS knowest H3045 VQQ2MS all H3605 NMS the travail H8513 that H834 RPRO hath befallen H4672 us :
15 How our fathers H1 went down H3381 into Egypt H4714 TFS-3FS , and we have dwelt H3427 in Egypt H4714 a long H7227 AMP time H3117 NMP ; and the Egyptians H4714 TFS-3FS vexed H7489 us , and our fathers H1 :
16 And when we cried H6817 unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , he heard H8085 our voice H6963 , and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS an angel H4397 NMS , and hath brought us forth H3318 out of Egypt H4714 : and , behold H2009 IJEC , we H587 PPRO-1MP are in Kadesh H6946 , a city H5892 GFS in the uttermost H7097 of thy border H1366 :
17 Let us pass H5674 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , through thy country H776 : we will not H3808 NADV pass through H5674 the fields H7704 , or through the vineyards H3754 , neither H3808 W-NADV will we drink H8354 of the water H4325 of the wells H875 : we will go H1980 by the king H4428 D-NMS \'s high way H1870 NMS , we will not H3808 NADV turn H5186 to the right hand H3225 NFS nor to the left H8040 , until H5704 PREP we have passed H5674 thy borders H1366 .
18 And Edom H123 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV pass H5674 by me , lest H6435 CONJ I come out H3318 VQY1MS against H7125 thee with the sword H2719 .
19 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , We will go H5927 by the high way H4546 : and if H518 W-PART I H589 PPRO-1MS and my cattle H4735 drink H8354 of thy water H4325 , then I will pay H5414 for it : I will only H7535 ADV , without H369 NPAR doing any thing H1697 VQPMS else , go through H5674 on my feet H7272 .
20 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV go through H5674 . And Edom H123 came out H3318 W-VQY3MS against H7125 L-VQFC-3MS him with much H3515 VQS3MS people H5971 , and with a strong H2389 hand H3027 .
21 Thus Edom H123 refused H3985 to give H5414 Israel H3478 passage H5674 through his border H1366 : wherefore Israel H3478 turned away H5186 W-VQY3MS from him .
22 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , even the whole H3605 NMS congregation H5712 , journeyed H5265 from Kadesh H6946 , and came H935 W-VQY3MP unto mount H2022 Hor H2023 .
23 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 in mount H2022 Hor H2023 , by H5921 PREP the coast H1366 CMS of the land H776 of Edom H123 , saying H559 W-VQY3MS ,
24 Aaron H175 shall be gathered H622 VNY3MS unto H413 PREP his people H5971 : for H3588 CONJ he shall not H3808 NADV enter H935 VQY3MS into H413 PREP the land H776 D-GFS which H834 RPRO I have given H5414 VQQ1MS unto the children H1121 L-CMP of Israel H3478 , because H5921 PREP ye rebelled against H4784 my word H6310 at the water H4325 of Meribah H4809 .
25 Take H3947 VQI2MS Aaron H175 and Eleazar H499 his son H1121 CMS-3MS , and bring them up H5927 unto mount H2022 Hor H2023 :
26 And strip H6584 Aaron H175 of his garments H899 , and put them upon H3847 Eleazar H499 his son H1121 CMS-3MS : and Aaron H175 shall be gathered H622 VNY3MS unto his people , and shall die H4191 there H8033 ADV .
27 And Moses H4872 did H6213 W-VQY3MS as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS : and they went up H5927 into H413 PREP mount H2022 Hor H2023 in the sight H5869 of all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 .
28 And Moses H4872 stripped H6584 Aaron H175 of his garments H899 , and put them upon H3847 Eleazar H499 his son H1121 CMS-3MS ; and Aaron H175 died H4191 W-VQY3MS there H8033 ADV in the top H7218 B-NMS of the mount H2022 : and Moses H4872 and Eleazar H499 came down H3381 W-VQY3MS from H4480 PREP the mount H2022 .
29 And when all H3605 NMS the congregation H5712 saw H7200 W-VQY3MP that H3588 CONJ Aaron H175 was dead H1478 , they mourned H1058 W-VQY3MP for Aaron H175 thirty H7970 MMP days H3117 NMS , even all H3605 NMS the house H1004 CMS of Israel H3478 LMS .
