Numbers 5:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The Lord spoke to Moses. He said,
2 "Tell the Israelites that certain people must be sent away from the camp. Command them to send away anyone who has a skin disease. They must send away all those who have a liquid waste coming from their bodies. And they must send away those who are not 'clean' because they have touched a dead body.
3 That applies to men and women alike. Send them out of the camp. They must not make their camp 'unclean.' That is where I live among them."
4 So the people of Israel did what the Lord commanded. They sent those who were not "clean" out of the camp. They did just as the Lord had directed Moses.
5 The Lord said to Moses,
6 "Speak to the people of Israel. Say to them, 'Suppose a man or woman does something wrong to someone else. Then that person is not being faithful to the Lord. People like that are guilty.
7 " 'They must admit they have committed a sin. They must pay in full for what they did wrong. And they must add a fifth to it. Then they must give all of it to the person they have sinned against.
8 " 'But suppose the person has died. And suppose there is not a close relative who can be paid for the sin that was committed. Then what is paid belongs to the Lord. It must be given to the priest. A ram must be given along with it. The ram must be sacrificed to the Lord to pay for the sin.
9 " 'All of the sacred gifts the people of Israel bring to a priest will belong to him.
10 Sacred gifts belong to the man who gives them. But what he gives to a priest will belong to the priest.' "
11 Then the Lord spoke to Moses again. He said,
12 "Speak to the people of Israel. Say to them, 'Suppose a man's wife goes down the wrong path. And suppose she is not faithful to him.
13 She has sex with another man. And suppose what she has done is hidden from her husband. No one knows she is not "clean." So there is no witness against her. And she has not been caught in the act.
14 " 'Suppose her husband becomes jealous. He does not trust his wife, and she is really not "clean." Or suppose he does not trust her even though she is "clean."
15 Then he must take his wife to the priest. " 'He must also bring an offering. It must be eight cups of barley flour. The offering is for his wife. He must not pour olive oil on it. And he must not put incense on it. It is a grain offering for being jealous. It calls attention to a person's guilt.
16 " 'The priest must have her stand in front of the Lord.
17 He must pour some holy water into a clay jar. He must get some dust from the floor of the holy tent. And he must put it into the water.
18 The priest must have the woman stand in front of the Lord. Then he must untie her hair. He must place in her hands the offering that calls attention to a person's guilt. It is the grain offering for being jealous. The priest must keep the bitter water with him. It is the water that brings a curse.
19 " 'Then the priest must have the woman take an oath. He must say to her, "Suppose no other man has had sex with you. And suppose you haven't gone down the wrong path. You have kept yourself pure while you are married to your husband. Then may the bitter water that brings a curse not harm you.
20 But suppose you have gone down the wrong path while you are married to your husband. You have made yourself 'unclean.' You have had sex with a man who isn't your husband."
21 " 'At that point the priest must put the woman under the curse of the oath. He must say, "May the Lord cause your people to call a curse down on you. May he cause them to speak against you. May they do it when the Lord makes your body unable to have children.
22 May this water that brings a curse enter your body. May it make your body unable to have children." " 'Then the woman must say, "Amen. Let it happen."
23 " 'The priest must write the curses on a scroll. He must wash them off in the bitter water.
24 It is the water he will have the woman drink. It is bitter water that brings a curse. It will enter her body. And it will cause her to suffer bitterly.
25 " 'The priest must take from her hands the grain offering for being jealous. He must lift it up and wave it in front of the Lord. He must bring it to the altar.
26 Then the priest must take a handful of the grain offering. It is the offering that calls attention to a person's guilt. He must burn it on the altar. After that, he must have the woman drink the water.
27 " 'Suppose she has made herself "unclean." She has not been faithful to her husband. And she has drunk the water that brings a curse. Then it will go into her body. It will cause her to suffer bitterly. It will make her body unable to have children. Her people will call a curse down on her.
28 " 'But suppose the woman has not made herself "unclean." And suppose she is free from anything that is not "clean." Then she will be free of guilt. And she will be able to have children.
29 " 'That is the law about being jealous. It applies to a woman who has gone down the wrong path. She has made herself "unclean" while she is married to her husband.
30 And it applies to a man who becomes jealous. He has doubts about his wife. The priest must have her stand in front of the Lord. He must apply the entire law to her.
31 The husband will not be guilty of doing anything wrong. But the woman will be punished for her sin.' "

2 Command H6680 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that they put out H7971 of H4480 PREP the camp H4264 every H3605 NMS leper H6879 , and every one H3605 NMS that hath an issue H2100 , and whosoever H3605 NMS is defiled H2931 by the dead H5315 :
3 Both male H2145 and H5704 PREP female H5347 shall ye put out H7971 , without H413 PREP the camp H4264 shall ye put H7971 them ; that they defile H2930 not H3808 W-NPAR their camps H4264 , in the midst H8432 B-CMS-3MP whereof H834 RPRO I H589 PPRO-1MS dwell H7931 VQPMS .
4 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did H6213 so H3651 ADV , and put them out H7971 without H413 PREP the camp H4264 : as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , so H3651 ADV did H6213 VQQ3MP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
5 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
6 Speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , When H3588 CONJ a man H376 NMS or H176 CONJ woman H802 NFS shall commit H6213 any H3605 M-CMS sin H2403 that men H120 D-NMS commit , to do H4603 a trespass H4604 against the LORD H3068 , and that H1931 person H5315 D-NFS be guilty H816 ;
7 Then they shall confess H3034 their sin H2403 which H834 RPRO they have done H6213 VQQ3MP : and he shall recompense H7725 his trespass H817 with the principal H7218 thereof , and add H3254 unto H5921 PREP-3MS it the fifth H2549 part thereof , and give H5414 W-VQQ3MS it unto him against whom H834 RPRO he hath trespassed H816 .
8 But if H518 W-PART the man H376 LD-NMS have no H369 NPAR kinsman H1350 to recompense H7725 L-VHFC the trespass H817 unto H413 PREP-3MS , let the trespass H817 be recompensed H7725 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , even to the priest H3548 ; beside H905 ML-NMS the ram H352 of the atonement H3725 , whereby H834 RPRO an atonement shall be made H3722 for H5921 him .
9 And every H3605 W-CMS offering H8641 of all H3605 L-CMS the holy things H6944 of the children H1121 CMP of Israel H3478 , which H834 RPRO they bring H7126 unto the priest H3548 , shall be H1961 his .
10 And every man H376 NMS \'s hallowed things H6944 shall be H1961 VQY3MP his : whatsoever H834 RPRO any man H376 NMS giveth H5414 VHFA the priest H3548 , it shall be H1961 his .
11 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
12 Speak H1696 VPFC unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and say H559 unto H413 PREP them , If H3588 CONJ any man H376 NMS \'s wife H802 CFS-3MS go aside H7847 , and commit H4603 a trespass H4604 NMS against him ,
13 And a man H376 NMS lie H7901 with H854 her carnally H7902 , and it be hid H5956 from the eyes H5869 M-CMD of her husband H376 NMS , and be kept close H5641 , and she H1931 be defiled H2930 , and there be no H369 NPAR witness H5707 against her , neither H3808 NADV she H1931 be taken H8610 with the manner ;
14 And the spirit H7307 NMS of jealousy H7068 come H5674 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and he be jealous H7065 of his wife H802 CFS-3MS , and she H1931 be defiled H2930 : or H176 CONJ if the spirit H7307 NMS of jealousy H7068 come H5674 VQQ3MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and he be jealous H7065 of his wife H802 CFS-3MS , and she H1931 be not H3808 NADV defiled H2930 :
15 Then shall the man H376 D-NMS bring H935 his wife H802 CFS-3MS unto H413 PREP the priest H3548 , and he shall bring H935 her offering H7133 for H5921 PREP-3MS her , the tenth H6224 part of an ephah H374 of barley H8184 meal H7058 ; he shall pour H3332 no H3808 ADV oil H8081 NMS upon H5921 PREP-3MS it , nor H3808 ADV put H5414 VHFA frankincense H3828 thereon H5921 PREP-3MS ; for H3588 CONJ it H1931 PPRO-3MS is an offering H4503 of jealousy H7068 , an offering H4503 of memorial H2146 , bringing iniquity to remembrance H2142 .
16 And the priest H3548 shall bring her near H7126 , and set H5975 her before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS :
17 And the priest H3548 shall take H3947 W-VQQ3MS holy H6918 water H4325 OMD in an earthen H2789 NMS vessel H3627 ; and of H4480 W-PREP the dust H6083 that H834 RPRO is H1961 VQY3MS in the floor H7172 of the tabernacle H4908 the priest H3548 shall take H3947 , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS it into H413 PREP the water H4325 OMD :
18 And the priest H3548 shall set H5975 the woman H802 D-NFS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , and uncover H6544 the woman H802 D-NFS \'s head H7218 NMS , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS the offering H4503 of memorial H2146 in H5921 PREP her hands H3709 , which H1931 PPRO-3FS is the jealousy H7068 offering H4503 : and the priest H3548 shall have H1961 VQY3MP in his hand H3027 the bitter H4751 water H4325 that causeth the curse H779 :
19 And the priest H3548 shall charge her by an oath H7650 , and say H559 unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS , If H518 PART no H3808 NADV man H376 NMS have lain H7901 VQQ3MS with H854 thee , and if H518 PART thou hast not H3808 NADV gone aside H7847 to uncleanness H2932 with another instead of H8478 NMS thy husband H376 NMS , be thou free H5352 from this H428 bitter H4751 water H4325 M-CMP that causeth the curse H779 :
20 But if H3588 CONJ thou H859 hast gone aside H7847 to another instead of H8478 NMS thy husband H376 NMS , and if H3588 CONJ thou be defiled H2930 , and some man H376 NMS have lain H5414 W-VQQ3MS with thee beside H1107 thine husband H376 NMS :
21 Then the priest H3548 shall charge H7650 the woman H802 D-NFS with an oath H7621 of cursing H423 , and the priest H3548 shall say H559 unto the woman H802 , The LORD H3068 EDS make H5414 VHFA thee a curse H423 and an oath H7621 among H8432 B-NMS thy people H5971 , when the LORD H3068 EDS doth make H5414 thy thigh H3409 to rot H5307 , and thy belly H990 to swell H6639 ;
22 And this H428 D-DPRO-3MP water H4325 D-CMS that causeth the curse H779 shall go H935 into thy bowels H4578 , to make thy belly H990 to swell H6638 , and thy thigh H3409 to rot H5307 : And the woman H802 D-NFS shall say H559 , Amen H543 , amen H543 .
23 And the priest H3548 shall write H3789 these H428 D-DPRO-3MP curses H423 in a book H5612 BD-NMS , and he shall blot them out H4229 with H413 PREP the bitter H4751 water H4325 :
24 And he shall cause the woman H802 D-NFS to drink H8248 W-VHQ3MS the bitter H4751 water H4325 D-CMS that causeth the curse H779 : and the water H4325 D-CMS that causeth the curse H779 shall enter H935 into her , and become bitter H4751 .
25 Then the priest H3548 shall take H3947 W-VQQ3MS the jealousy H7068 offering H4503 out of the woman H802 D-NFS \'s hand H3027 M-GFS , and shall wave H5130 the offering H4503 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , and offer H7126 it upon H413 PREP the altar H4196 :
26 And the priest H3548 shall take a handful H7061 of H4480 PREP the offering H4503 , even the memorial H234 thereof , and burn H6999 it upon the altar H4196 , and afterward H310 W-ADV shall cause the woman H802 D-NFS to drink H8248 the water H4325 D-OMD .
27 And when he hath made her to drink H8248 the water H4325 D-CMS , then it shall come to pass H1961 W-VQQ3FS , that , if H518 PART she be defiled H2930 , and have done H4603 trespass H4604 against her husband H376 , that the water H4325 D-CMS that causeth the curse H779 shall enter H935 into her , and become bitter H4751 , and her belly H990 shall swell H6638 , and her thigh H3409 shall rot H5307 : and the woman H802 D-NFS shall be H1961 W-VQQ3FS a curse H423 among H7130 her people H5971 .
28 And if H518 W-PART the woman H802 D-NFS be not H3808 NADV defiled H2930 , but be clean H2889 ; then she shall be free H5352 , and shall conceive H2232 seed H2233 .
29 This H2063 DPRO is the law H8451 CFS of jealousies H7068 , when H834 RPRO a wife H802 NFS goeth aside H7847 to another instead of H8478 NMS her husband H376 , and is defiled H2930 ;
30 Or H176 CONJ when H834 RPRO the spirit H7307 NFS of jealousy H7068 cometh H5674 upon H5921 PREP-3MS him , and he be jealous H7065 over his wife H802 CFS-3MS , and shall set H5975 the woman H802 D-NFS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , and the priest H3548 shall execute H6213 W-VQQ3MS upon her all H3605 NMS this H2063 law H8451 .
31 Then shall the man H376 D-NMS be guiltless H5352 from iniquity H5771 , and this H1931 D-PPRO-3FS woman H802 shall bear H5375 VQY2MS her iniquity H5771 .
