Exodus 40:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Then the Lord said to Moses,
2 "Set up the holy tent, the Tent of Meeting. Set it up on the first day of the first month.
3 "Place in it the ark where the tablets of the covenant are kept. Screen the ark with the curtain.
4 Bring in the table for the holy bread. Arrange the loaves of bread on it. Then bring in the lampstand. Set up its lamps.
5 Place the gold altar for burning incense in front of the ark where the tablets of the covenant are kept. Put up the curtain at the entrance to the holy tent.
6 "Place the altar for burnt offerings in front of the entrance to the holy tent, the Tent of Meeting.
7 Place the large bowl between the Tent of Meeting and the altar. Put water in the bowl.
8 "Set up the courtyard around the holy tent. Put the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard.
9 "Get the anointing oil. Anoint the holy tent and everything that is in it. Set apart the holy tent and everything that belongs to it. Then it will be holy.
10 Anoint the altar for burnt offerings and all of its tools. Set the altar apart. Then it will be a very holy place.
11 Anoint the large bowl and its stand. Set them apart.
12 "Bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. Wash them with water.
13 Dress Aaron in the sacred clothes. Anoint him and set him apart. Then he will be able to serve me as priest.
14 "Bring his sons and dress them in their inner robes.
15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father. Then they will be able to serve me as priests. They will be anointed to do the work of priests. That work will last for all time to come."
16 Moses did everything just as the Lord had commanded him.
17 So the holy tent was set up. It was the first day of the first month in the second year.
18 Moses set up the holy tent. He put the bases in place. He put the frames in them. He put in the crossbars. He set up the posts.
19 He spread the holy tent over the frames. Then he put the coverings over the tent. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
20 He got the tablets of the covenant. He placed them in the ark. He put the poles through its rings. And he put the cover on it. The cover was the place where sin is paid for.
21 Moses brought the ark into the holy tent. He hung the curtain to screen the ark where the tablets of the covenant are kept. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
22 He placed the table for the holy bread in the Tent of Meeting. It was on the north side of the holy tent outside the curtain.
23 He arranged the loaves of bread on it in the sight of the Lord. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
24 He placed the lampstand in the Tent of Meeting. It stood across from the table on the south side of the holy tent.
25 He set up the lamps in the sight of the Lord. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
26 He placed the gold altar for burning incense in the Tent of Meeting. He placed it in front of the curtain.
27 He burned sweet-smelling incense on it. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
28 Then he put up the curtain at the entrance to the holy tent.
29 He set the altar for burnt offerings near the entrance to the holy tent, the Tent of Meeting. He sacrificed burnt offerings and grain offerings on it. Moses did it as the Lord had commanded him.
30 He placed the large bowl between the Tent of Meeting and the altar. He put water in the bowl for washing.
31 Moses and Aaron and his sons used it to wash their hands and feet.
32 They washed when they entered the Tent of Meeting or approached the altar. They did it as the Lord had commanded Moses.
33 Then Moses set up the courtyard around the holy tent and altar. He put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses completed the work.
34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting. The glory of the Lord filled the holy tent.
35 Moses couldn't enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled on it. The glory of the Lord filled the holy tent.
36 The people of Israel continued their travels. When the cloud lifted from above the holy tent, they started out.
37 But if the cloud didn't lift, they did not start out. They stayed until the day it lifted.
38 So the cloud of the Lord was above the holy tent during the day. Fire was in the cloud at night. The whole community of Israel could see the cloud during all of their travels.
1 And the LORD H3068 EDS spoke H1696 W-VPY3MS unto H413 PREP Moses H4872 , saying H559 ,
2 On the first day H3117 B-NMS of the first H7223 month H2320 D-NMS shalt thou set up H6965 the tabernacle H4908 of the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 .
3 And thou shalt put H7760 therein H8033 ADV the ark H727 of the testimony H5715 , and cover H5526 the ark H727 with H854 PREP the veil H6532 .
4 And thou shalt bring in the table H7979 , and set in order H6186 the things that are to be set in order H6187 upon it ; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick H4501 , and light H5927 the lamps H5216 thereof .
5 And thou shalt set H5414 the altar H4196 of gold H2091 for the incense H7004 before H6440 L-CMP the ark H727 of the testimony H5715 , and put H7760 the hanging H4539 of the door H6607 to the tabernacle H4908 .
6 And thou shalt set H5414 the altar H4196 of the burnt offering H5930 before H6440 L-CMP the door H6607 CMS of the tabernacle H4908 of the tent H168 of the congregation H4150 .
7 And thou shalt set H5414 the laver H3595 between H996 W-PREP the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS and the altar H4196 D-NMS , and shalt put H5414 water H4325 NMP therein H8033 ADV .
8 And thou shalt set up H7760 the court H2691 round about H5439 ADV , and hang up H5414 the hanging H4539 at the court H2691 gate H8179 NMS .
9 And thou shalt take H3947 the anointing H4888 oil H8081 NMS , and anoint H4886 the tabernacle H4908 , and all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO is therein , and shalt hallow H6942 it , and all H3605 NMS the vessels H3627 thereof : and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS holy H6944 .
10 And thou shalt anoint H4886 the altar H4196 of the burnt offering H5930 , and all H3605 NMS his vessels H3627 , and sanctify H6942 the altar H4196 D-NMS : and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS an altar H4196 D-NMS most holy H6944 .
11 And thou shalt anoint H4886 the laver H3595 and his foot H3653 , and sanctify H6942 it .
12 And thou shalt bring H7126 Aaron H175 and his sons H1121 CMP-3MS unto H413 PREP the door H6607 CMS of the tabernacle H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , and wash H7364 them with water H4325 .
13 And thou shalt put upon H3847 Aaron H175 the holy H6944 garments H899 , and anoint H4886 him , and sanctify H6942 him ; that he may minister unto me in the priest\'s office H3547 .
14 And thou shalt bring H7126 his sons H1121 CMP-3MS , and clothe H3847 them with coats H3801 :
15 And thou shalt anoint H4886 them , as H834 K-RPRO thou didst anoint H4886 their father H1 CMS-3MP , that they may minister unto me in the priest\'s office H3547 : for their anointing H4886 shall surely be W-VQQ3FS an everlasting H5769 NMS priesthood H3550 throughout their generations H1755 .
16 Thus did H6213 W-VQY3MS Moses H4872 : according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS him , so H3651 ADV did H6213 W-VQY3MS he .
17 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the first H7223 month H2320 BD-NMS in the second H8145 D-ONUM year H8141 , on the first H259 B-NMS day of the month H2320 LD-NMS , that the tabernacle H4908 was reared up H6965 .
18 And Moses H4872 reared up H6965 the tabernacle H4908 , and fastened H5414 W-VQQ3MS his sockets H134 , and set up H7760 W-VQY3MS the boards H7175 thereof , and put in W-VQQ3MS the bars H1280 thereof , and reared up H6965 his pillars H5982 .
19 And he spread abroad H6566 the tent H168 over H5921 PREP the tabernacle H4908 , and put H7760 W-VQY3MS the covering H4372 CMS of the tent H168 above H4605 upon H5921 PREP it ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
20 And he took H3947 W-VQY3MS and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS the testimony H5715 into H413 PREP the ark H727 , and set H7760 W-VQY3MS the staves H905 on H5921 PREP the ark H727 , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS the mercy seat H3727 above H4605 upon H5921 PREP the ark H727 :
21 And he brought H935 W-VHY3MS the ark H727 into H413 PREP the tabernacle H4908 , and set up H7760 W-VQY3MS the veil H6532 of the covering H4539 , and covered H5526 W-VHY3MS the ark H727 of the testimony H5715 ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
22 And he put H5414 W-VQQ3MS the table H7979 in the tent H168 of the congregation H4150 NMS , upon H5921 PREP the side H3409 of the tabernacle H4908 northward H6828 NFS-3FS , without H2351 the veil H6532 .
23 And he set H6186 the bread H3899 NMS in order H6187 upon H5921 PREP-3MS it before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS had commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
24 And he put H7760 W-VQY3MS the candlestick H4501 in the tent H168 of the congregation H4150 NMS , over against H5227 the table H7979 , on H5921 PREP the side H3409 of the tabernacle H4908 southward H5045 .
25 And he lighted H5927 W-VHY3MS the lamps H5216 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
26 And he put H7760 W-VQY3MS the golden H2091 altar H4196 in the tent H168 of the congregation H4150 NMS before H6440 L-CMP the veil H6532 :
27 And he burnt H6999 sweet H5561 incense H7004 thereon H5921 PREP-3MS ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
28 And he set up H7760 W-VQY3MS the hanging H4539 at the door H6607 of the tabernacle H4908 .
29 And he put H7760 VQQ3MS the altar H4196 of burnt offering H5930 by the door H6607 CMS of the tabernacle H4908 of the tent H168 of the congregation H4150 NMS , and offered H5927 W-VHY3MS upon H5921 PREP-3MS it the burnt offering H5930 and the meat offering H4503 ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
30 And he set H7760 W-VQY3MS the laver H3595 between H996 W-PREP the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS and the altar H4196 D-NMS , and put H5414 W-VQQ3MS water H4325 OMD there H8033 ADV-3FS , to wash H7364 withal .
31 And Moses H4872 and Aaron H175 and his sons H1121 W-CMP-3MS washed H7364 their hands H3027 CFD-3MP and their feet H7272 thereat H4480 M-PREP-3MS :
32 When they went H935 into H413 PREP the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , and when they came near H7126 unto H413 PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS , they washed H7364 ; as H834 K-RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS commanded H6680 VPQ3MS Moses H4872 .
33 And he reared up H6965 the court H2691 round about H5439 ADV the tabernacle H4908 and the altar H4196 , and set up H5414 W-VQQ3MS the hanging H4539 of the court H2691 gate H8179 NMS . So Moses H4872 finished H3615 W-VPY3MS the work H4399 .
34 Then a cloud H6051 covered H3680 W-VQY3MS the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , and the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS filled H4390 VQQ3MS the tabernacle H4908 .
35 And Moses H4872 was not H3808 W-NPAR able H3201 to enter H935 L-VQFC into H413 PREP the tent H168 NMS of the congregation H4150 NMS , because H3588 CONJ the cloud H6051 abode H7931 thereon H5921 PREP-3MS , and the glory H3519 of the LORD H3068 EDS filled H4390 VQQ3MS the tabernacle H4908 .
36 And when the cloud H6051 was taken up H5927 from over H5921 M-PREP the tabernacle H4908 , the children H1121 of Israel H3478 went onward H5265 in all H3605 their journeys H4550 :
37 But if H518 W-PART the cloud H6051 were not H3808 NADV taken up H5927 , then they journeyed H5265 not H3808 W-NADV till H5704 PREP the day H3117 NMS that it was taken up H5927 .
38 For H3588 CONJ the cloud H6051 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS was upon H5921 PREP the tabernacle H4908 by day H3119 ADV , and fire H784 W-NMS was H1961 VQY3FS on it by night H3915 GMS , in the sight H5869 of all H3605 CMS the house H1004 of Israel H3478 , throughout all H3605 B-CMS their journeys H4550 .
