Jeremiah 36:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 A message came to me from the Lord. It came in the fourth year that Jehoiakim was king of Judah. He was the son of Josiah. The message said,
2 "Get a scroll. Write on it all of the words I have spoken to you. Write down what I have said about Israel, Judah and all of the other nations. Write what I have said to you from the time of King Josiah until now.
3 The people of Judah will hear about all of the trouble I plan to bring on them. Maybe then all of them will turn from their evil ways. If they do, I will forgive their sins and the evil things they have done."
4 So I sent for Baruch, the son of Neriah. I told him to write down all of the words the Lord had spoken to me. And Baruch wrote them on the scroll.
5 Then I said to him, "I'm not allowed to go to the Lord's temple.
6 So you go there. Go on a day when the people are fasting. Read to them from the scroll. Read the words of the Lord you wrote down as I gave them to you. Read them to all of the people of Judah who come in from their towns.
7 They will hear what the Lord will do to them when his burning anger blazes out against them. Then perhaps they will pray to him. And maybe all of them will turn from their evil ways."
8 Baruch, the son of Neriah, did everything I told him to do. He went to the Lord's temple. There he read the words of the Lord from the scroll.
9 It was in the fifth year that Jehoiakim, the son of Josiah, was king of Judah. It was the ninth month of that year. A time of fasting at the Lord's temple had been ordered. All of the people in Jerusalem were told to take part in it. So were those who had come in from the towns of Judah.
10 Baruch read to all of the people who were at the Lord's temple. He read my words from the scroll. He was in the room of the secretary Gemariah. It was located in the upper courtyard at the entrance of the New Gate of the temple. Gemariah was the son of Shaphan.
11 Micaiah was the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. Micaiah heard Baruch reading all of the Lord's words that were written on the scroll.
12 Then he went down to the secretary's room in the royal palace. All of the officials were sitting there. They included the secretary Elishama and Delaiah, the son of Shemaiah. Elnathan, the son of Acbor, was also there. So was Gemariah, the son of Shaphan. Zedekiah, the son of Hananiah, was there too. And so were all of the other officials.
13 Micaiah told all of them what he had heard. He told them everything Baruch had read to the people from the scroll.
14 All of the officials sent Jehudi to speak to Baruch, the son of Neriah. Jehudi was the son of Nethaniah. Nethaniah was the son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Cushi. Jehudi said to Baruch, "Come. Bring the scroll you have read to the people." So Baruch went to them. He carried the scroll with him.
15 The officials said to him, "Please sit down. Read the scroll to us." So Baruch read it to them.
16 They heard all of its words. Then they looked at each other in fear. They said to Baruch, "We must report all of these words to the king."
17 They said to Baruch, "Tell us. How did you happen to write all of these things? Did Jeremiah tell you to do it?"
18 "Yes," Baruch replied. "He told me to write down all of these words. So I wrote them in ink on the scroll."
19 Then the officials spoke to Baruch. They said, "You and Jeremiah must go and hide. Don't let anyone know where you are."
20 The officials put the scroll in the room of the secretary Elishama. Then they went to the king in the courtyard. They reported everything to him.
21 The king sent Jehudi to get the scroll. Jehudi brought it from the room of the secretary Elishama. He read it to the king. All of the officials were standing beside the king. So they heard it too.
22 It was the ninth month. The king was sitting in his winter apartment. A fire was burning in the fire pot in front of him.
23 Jehudi read three or four columns from the scroll. Then the king cut them off with a secretary's knife. He threw them into the fire pot. He did that until the entire scroll was burned up in the fire.
24 The king and some of his attendants heard all of those words. But they weren't afraid. They didn't tear their clothes.
25 Elnathan, Delaiah and Gemariah begged the king not to burn the scroll. But he wouldn't listen to them.
26 Instead, the king commanded three men to arrest the secretary Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But the Lord had hidden them. The three were Jerahmeel, Seraiah and Shelemiah. Jerahmeel was a member of the royal court. Seraiah was the son of Azriel. And Shelemiah was the son of Abdeel.
27 A message came to me from the Lord. It came after the king burned the scroll that had the words Baruch had written down. I had told him to write them. The message said,
28 "Get another scroll. Write on it all of the words that were on the first one. King Jehoiakim burned that one up.
29 "Also tell King Jehoiakim, 'The Lord says, "You burned that scroll. You said to Baruch, 'Why did you write that the king of Babylonia would certainly come? Why did you write that he would destroy this land? Why did you write that he would cut off people and animals alike from it?' "
30 " 'So now the Lord has something to say about Jehoiakim, the king of Judah. He says, "No one from Jehoiakim's family line will sit on David's throne. Jehoiakim's body will be thrown out. It will lie outside in the heat by day and in the frost at night.
31 I will punish him and his children and his attendants. I will punish them for their sinful ways. I will bring on them all of the trouble I said I would. And I will bring it on the people of Jerusalem and Judah. They have not listened to me." ' "
32 So I got another scroll. I gave it to the secretary Baruch, the son of Neriah. I told him what to write on it. He wrote down all of the words that were on the scroll King Jehoiakim had burned up in the fire. And he added many more words the Lord had given to me. They were similar to those that had already been written.

2 Take H3947 VQI2MS thee a roll H4039 of a book H5612 CMS , and write H3789 therein H413 PREP-3FS all H3605 NMS the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO I have spoken H1696 VPQ1MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee against H5921 PREP Israel H3478 , and against H5921 PREP Judah H3063 , and against H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS the nations H1471 D-NMP , from the day H3117 M-NMS I spoke H1696 VPQ1MS unto H413 PREP-2MS thee , from the days H3117 M-NMS of Josiah H2977 , even unto H5704 W-PREP this H2088 D-PMS day H3117 M-NMS .
3 It may be that H194 ADV the house H1004 CMS of Judah H3063 will hear H8085 VQY3MP all H3605 NMS the evil H7451 D-AFS which H834 RPRO I H595 PPRO-1MS purpose H2803 to do H6213 L-VQFC unto them ; that H4616 L-CONJ they may return H7725 every man H376 NMS from his evil H7451 D-AFS way H1870 M-CMS-3MS ; that I may forgive H5545 their iniquity H5771 and their sin H2403 .
4 Then Jeremiah H3414 called H7121 W-VQY3MS Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 : and Baruch H1263 wrote H3789 from the mouth H6310 M-CMS of Jeremiah H3414 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO he had spoken H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , upon H5921 PREP a roll H4039 of a book H5612 .
5 And Jeremiah H3414 commanded H6680 Baruch H1263 , saying H559 L-VQFC , I H589 PPRO-1MS am shut up H6113 ; I cannot H3201 go H935 L-VQFC into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS :
6 Therefore go H935 W-VQQ2MS thou H859 PPRO-2MS , and read H7121 in the roll H4039 , which H834 RPRO thou hast written H3789 from my mouth H6310 M-CMS , the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS in the ears H241 of the people H5971 in the LORD H3068 EDS \'s house H1004 CMS upon the fasting H6685 NMS day H3117 B-NMS : and also H1571 W-CONJ thou shalt read H7121 them in the ears H241 of all H3605 CMS Judah H3063 that come H935 out of their cities H5892 .
7 It may be H194 ADV they will present H5307 their supplication H8467 before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS , and will return H7725 W-VUY3MP every one H376 NMS from his evil H7451 D-AFS way H1870 M-CMS-3MS : for H3588 CONJ great H1419 is the anger H639 and the fury H2534 that H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS hath pronounced H1696 VPQ3MS against H413 PREP this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 .
8 And Baruch H1263 the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 did H6213 W-VQY3MS according to all H3605 K-NMS that H834 RPRO Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 commanded H6680 VPQ3MS-3MS him , reading H7121 in the book H5612 the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS in the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS \'s house H1004 CMS .
9 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in the fifth H2549 year H8141 of Jehoiakim H3079 the son H1121 of Josiah H2977 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , in the ninth H8671 month H2320 BD-NMS , that they proclaimed H7121 a fast H6685 NMS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS to all H3605 NMS the people H5971 in Jerusalem H3389 , and to all H3605 NMS the people H5971 that came H935 from the cities H5892 of Judah H3063 unto Jerusalem H3389 .
10 Then read H7121 W-VQY3MS Baruch H1263 in the book H5612 BD-NMS the words H1697 CMP of Jeremiah H3414 in the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , in the chamber H3957 of Gemariah H1587 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 the scribe H5608 , in the higher H5945 court H2691 , at the entry H6607 CMS of the new H2319 gate H8179 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS \'s house H1004 CMS , in the ears H241 of all H3605 NMS the people H5971 D-NMS .
11 When Michaiah H4321 the son H1121 CMS of Gemariah H1587 , the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 , had heard H8085 out of M-PREP the book H5612 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS ,
12 Then he went down H3381 W-VQY3MS into H5921 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS \'s house H1004 CMS , into H5921 PREP the scribe H5608 \'s chamber H3957 : and , lo H2009 IJEC , all H3605 NMS the princes H8269 sat H3427 there H8033 ADV , even Elishama H476 the scribe H5608 , and Delaiah H1806 the son H1121 CMS of Shemaiah H8098 , and Elnathan H494 the son H1121 CMS of Achbor H5907 , and Gemariah H1587 the son H1121 CMS of Shaphan H8227 , and Zedekiah H6667 the son H1121 CMS of Hananiah H2608 , and all H3605 NMS the princes H8269 .
13 Then Michaiah H4321 declared H5046 W-VHY3MS unto them all H3605 NMS the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO he had heard H8085 , when Baruch H1263 read H7121 the book H5612 BD-NMS in the ears H241 of the people H5971 D-NMS .
14 Therefore all H3605 CMS the princes H8269 sent H7971 Jehudi H3065 the son H1121 CMS of Nethaniah H5418 , the son H1121 CMS of Shelemiah H8018 , the son H1121 CMS of Cushi H3570 , unto H413 PREP Baruch H1263 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Take H3947 in thine hand H3027 the roll H4039 wherein H834 RPRO thou hast read H7121 in the ears H241 of the people H5971 , and come H1980 . So Baruch H1263 the son H1121 CMS of Neriah H5374 took H3947 W-VQY3MS the roll H4039 in his hand H3027 B-CFS-3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them .
15 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Sit down H3427 now H4994 IJEC , and read H7121 W-VQY3MS it in our ears H241 B-CFS-1MP . So Baruch H1263 read H7121 W-VQY3MS it in their ears H241 .
16 Now it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when they had heard H8085 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 AMP , they were afraid H6342 both H413 PREP one H376 NMS and other H7453 NMS-3MS , and said H559 unto H413 PREP Baruch H1263 , We will surely tell H5046 the king H4428 of all H3605 NMS these H428 words H1697 AMP .
17 And they asked H7592 Baruch H1263 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Tell H5046 us now H4994 IJEC , How H349 didst thou write H3789 all H3605 NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP at his mouth H6310 ?
18 Then Baruch H1263 answered H559 W-VQY3MS them , He pronounced H7121 VQY3MS all H3605 NMS these H428 D-DPRO-3MP words H1697 AMP unto H413 PREP-1MS me with his mouth H6310 M-CMS-3MS , and I H589 W-PPRO-1MS wrote H3789 them with ink H1773 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 .
19 Then said H559 W-VQY3MP the princes H8269 unto H413 PREP Baruch H1263 , Go H1980 VQI2MS , hide H5641 thee , thou H859 PPRO-2MS and Jeremiah H3414 ; and let no H408 NPAR man H376 W-NMS know H3045 where H375 IGAT ye be .
20 And they went in H935 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS into the court H2691 , but they laid up H6485 the roll H4039 in the chamber H3957 of Elishama H476 the scribe H5608 , and told H5046 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 in the ears H241 of the king H4428 D-NMS .
21 So the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Jehudi H3065 to fetch H3947 L-VQFC the roll H4039 : and he took H3947 W-VQY3MS it out of Elishama H476 the scribe H5608 \'s chamber H3957 . And Jehudi H3065 read H7121 it in the ears H241 of the king H4428 D-NMS , and in the ears H241 of all H3605 NMS the princes H8269 which stood H5975 beside H5921 M-PREP the king H4428 .
22 Now the king H4428 sat H3427 VQPMS in the winterhouse H1004 CMS in the ninth H8671 month H2320 BD-NMS : and there was a fire on the hearth H254 burning H1197 before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him .
23 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , that when Jehudi H3065 had read H7121 three H7969 MFS or four H702 leaves H1817 , he cut H7167 it with the penknife H8593 , and cast H7993 it into H413 PREP the fire H784 that H834 RPRO was on H413 PREP the hearth H254 , until H5704 PREP all H3605 NMS the roll H4039 was consumed H8552 in H5921 PREP the fire H784 that H834 RPRO was on H5921 PREP the hearth H254 .
24 Yet they were not H3808 W-NPAR afraid H6342 , nor H3808 W-NPAR rent H7167 their garments H899 , neither the king H4428 D-NMS , nor any H3605 NMS of his servants H5650 that heard H8085 all H3605 NMS these H428 words H1697 AMP .
25 Nevertheless H1571 W-CONJ Elnathan H494 and Delaiah H1806 and Gemariah H1587 had made intercession H6293 to the king H4428 that he would not H1115 L-NPAR burn H8313 the roll H4039 : but he would not H3808 W-NPAR hear H8085 them .
26 But the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 Jerahmeel H3396 the son H1121 CMS of Hammelech H4429 , and Seraiah H8304 the son H1121 of Azriel H5837 , and Shelemiah H8018 the son H1121 CMS of Abdeel H5655 , to take H3947 L-VQFC Baruch H1263 the scribe H5608 and Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 : but the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS hid H5641 them .
27 Then the word H1697 NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Jeremiah H3414 , after that H310 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS had burned H8313 the roll H4039 , and the words H1697 AMP which H834 RPRO Baruch H1263 wrote H3789 CMS at the mouth H6310 M-CMS of Jeremiah H3414 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
28 Take H3947 VQI2MS thee again H7725 VQFC another H312 roll H4039 , and write H3789 in H5921 PREP it all H3605 NMS the former H7223 words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO were H1961 VQQ3MP in H5921 PREP the first H7223 roll H4039 , which H834 RPRO Jehoiakim H3079 the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 hath burned H8313 .
29 And thou shalt say H559 to H5921 W-PREP Jehoiakim H3079 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Thou H859 PPRO-2MS hast burned H8313 this H2063 D-DFS roll H4039 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Why H4069 IPRO hast thou written H3789 therein H5921 PREP-3FS , saying H559 L-VQFC , The king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS shall certainly come H935 VQI2MS and destroy H7843 this H2063 D-DFS land H776 D-GFS , and shall cause to cease H7673 from H4480 M-PREP-3FS thence man H120 NMS and beast H929 ?
30 Therefore H3651 L-ADV thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS of H5921 PREP Jehoiakim H3079 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 ; He shall have H1961 VQY3MS none H3808 NADV to sit H3427 VQPMS upon H5921 PREP the throne H3678 of David H1732 : and his dead body H5038 shall be H1961 VQY2MS cast out H7993 in the day H3117 B-AMS to the heat H2721 , and in the night H3915 BD-NMS to the frost H7140 .
31 And I will punish H6485 him and his seed H2233 NMS-3MS and his servants H5650 for their iniquity H5771 ; and I will bring H935 upon H5921 PREP-3MS them , and upon H5921 PREP-3MS the inhabitants H3427 of Jerusalem H3389 , and upon H413 W-PREP the men H376 NMS of Judah H3063 , all H3605 NMS the evil H7451 D-AFS that H834 RPRO I have pronounced H1696 VPQ1MS against H413 PREP-3MP them ; but they hearkened H8085 not H3808 W-NPAR .
32 Then took H3947 VQQ3MS Jeremiah H3414 another H312 roll H4039 , and gave H5414 it to H413 PREP Baruch H1263 the scribe H5608 , the son H1121 of Neriah H5374 ; who wrote H3789 therein H5921 PREP-3FS from the mouth H6310 M-CMS of Jeremiah H3414 all H3605 NMS the words H1697 CMP of the book H5612 which H834 RPRO Jehoiakim H3079 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 had burned H8313 in the fire H784 : and there were added H3254 besides H5750 W-ADV unto H5921 PREP-3MP them many H7227 AMP like H1992 words H1697 NMP .
