Isaiah 44:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 "Family of Jacob, listen to me. You are my servants. People of Israel, I have chosen you.
2 I made you. I formed you when you were born as a nation. I will help you. So listen to what I am saying. Family of Jacob, do not be afraid. You are my servants. People of Israel, I have chosen you.
3 I will pour water out on the thirsty land. I will make streams flow on the dry ground. I will pour out my Spirit on your children. I will pour out my blessing on their children after them.
4 They will spring up like grass in a meadow. They will grow like poplar trees near flowing streams.
5 Some will say, 'We belong to the Lord.' Others will call themselves by Jacob's name. Still others will write on their hands, 'We belong to the Lord.' And they will be called by the name of Israel.
6 "I am Israel's King. I set them free. I am the Lord who rules over all. So listen to what I am saying. I am the First and the Last. I am the one and only God.
7 Who is like me? Let him come forward and speak boldly. Let him tell me everything that has happened since I created my people long ago. And let him tell me what has not happened yet. Let him announce ahead of time what is going to take place.
8 Do not tremble with fear. Do not be afraid. Didn't I announce everything that has happened? Didn't I tell you about it long ago? You are my witnesses. Is there any other God but me? No! There is no other Rock. I do not know even one."
9 Those who make statues of gods don't amount to anything. And the statues they think so much of are worthless. Those who would speak up for them are blind. They don't know anything. So they will be put to shame.
10 People make statues of gods. But those gods can't do them any good.
11 People like that will be put to shame. Those who make statues of gods are mere men. Let all of them come together and state their case. They will be terrified and put to shame.
12 A blacksmith gets his tool. He uses it to shape metal over the burning coals. He uses his hammers to make a statue of a god. He forms it with his powerful arm. He gets hungry and loses his strength. He doesn't drink any water. He gets weaker and weaker.
13 A carpenter measures a piece of wood with a line. He draws a pattern on it with a marker. He cuts out a statue with sharp tools. He marks it with compasses. He shapes it into the form of a handsome man. He does all of that so he can put it in a temple.
14 He cuts down a cedar tree. Or perhaps he takes a cypress or an oak tree. It might be a tree that grew in the forest. Or it might be a pine tree he planted. And the rain made it grow.
15 Man gets wood from trees for fuel. He uses some of it to warm himself. He starts a fire and bakes bread. But he also uses some of it to make a god and worship it. He makes a statue of a god and bows down to it.
16 He burns half of the wood in the fire. He prepares a meal over it. He cooks meat over it. He eats until he is full. He also warms himself. He says, "Good! I'm getting warm. The fire is nice and hot."
17 From the rest of the wood he makes a statue. It becomes his god. He bows down and worships it. He prays to it. He says, "Save me. You are my god."
18 People like that don't even know what they are doing. Their eyes are shut so that they can't see the truth. Their minds are closed so that they can't understand it.
19 No one even stops to think about this. No one has any sense or understanding. If anyone did, he would say, "I used half of the wood for fuel. I even baked bread over the fire. I cooked meat. Then I ate it. Should I now make a statue of a god out of the wood that's left over? Should I bow down to a block of wood? The Lord would hate that."
20 That's as foolish as eating ashes! The mind of someone like that has led him down the wrong path. He can't save himself. He can't bring himself to say, "This thing I'm holding in my right hand isn't really a god at all."
21 The Lord says, "Family of Jacob, remember those things. People of Israel, you are my servants. I have made you. You are my servants. Israel, I will not forget you.
22 I will sweep your sins away as if they were a cloud. I will blow them away as if they were the morning mist. Return to me. Then I will set you free."
23 Sing with joy, you heavens! The Lord does wonderful things. Shout out loud, you earth! Burst into song, you mountains! Sing, you forests and all of your trees! The Lord sets the family of Jacob free. He shows his glory in Israel.
24 The Lord says, "People of Israel, I set you free. I formed you when you were born as a nation. "I am the Lord. I have made everything. I alone spread out the heavens. I formed the earth by myself.
25 "Some prophets are not really prophets at all. I show that their miraculous signs are fake. I make those who practice evil magic look foolish. I destroy the learning of those who think they are wise. Their knowledge does not make any sense at all.
26 I make the words of my servants the prophets come true. I carry out what my messengers say will happen. "I say about Jerusalem, 'My people will live there again.' I say about the towns of Judah, 'They will be rebuilt.' I say about their broken-down buildings, 'I will make them like new again.'
27 I say to the deep waters, 'Dry up. Let your streams become dry.'
28 I say about Cyrus, 'He is my shepherd. He will accomplish everything I want him to. He will say about Jerusalem, "Let it be rebuilt." And he will say about the temple, "Let its foundations be laid." '

2 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS that made H6213 thee , and formed H3335 thee from the womb H990 M-CFS , which will help H5826 thee ; Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR , O Jacob H3290 , my servant H5650 CMS-1MS ; and thou , Jesurun H3484 , whom I have chosen H977 .
3 For H3588 CONJ I will pour H3332 water H4325 OMD upon H5921 PREP him that is thirsty H6771 , and floods H5140 upon H5921 PREP the dry ground H3004 : I will pour H3332 my spirit H7307 CFS-1MS upon H5921 PREP thy seed H2233 CMS-2MS , and my blessing H1293 upon H5921 PREP thine offspring H6631 :
4 And they shall spring up H6779 as among H996 the grass H2682 NMS , as willows H6155 by H5921 PREP the water H4325 NMP courses H2988 .
5 One H2088 DPRO shall say H559 VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS am the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s ; and another H2088 W-PMS shall call H7121 VQY3MS himself by the name H8034 of Jacob H3290 ; and another H2088 W-PMS shall subscribe H3789 with his hand H3027 CFS-3MS unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and surname H3655 himself by the name H8034 of Israel H3478 .
6 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS the King H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , and his redeemer H1350 the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 ; I H589 PPRO-1MS am the first H7223 , and I H589 PPRO-1MS am the last H314 ; and beside H1107 me there is no H369 NPAR God H430 NAME-4MP .
7 And who H4310 W-IGAT , as I , shall call H7121 VQY3MS , and shall declare H5046 it , and set it in order H6186 for me , since I appointed H7760 the ancient H5769 NMS people H5971 NMS ? and the things that are coming H857 , and shall come H935 , let them show H5046 VHY3MP unto them .
8 Fear H6342 ye not H408 ADV , neither H408 ADV be afraid H7297 : have not H3808 I-NADV I told H8085 thee from that time H227 , and have declared H5046 it ? ye H859 W-PPRO-2MP are even my witnesses H5707 . Is there H3426 I-ADV a God H433 NAME-4MS beside H1107 me ? yea , there is no H369 W-NPAR God H6697 NMS ; I know H3045 not H1077 ADV any .
9 They that make H3335 a graven image H6459 are all H3605 CMS-3MP of them vanity H8414 NMS ; and their delectable things H2530 shall not H1077 ADV profit H3276 ; and they H1992 PPRO-3MP are their own witnesses H5707 ; they see H7200 VQY3MP not H1077 ADV , nor H1077 know H3045 ; that H4616 L-CONJ they may be ashamed H954 .
10 Who H4310 IPRO hath formed H3335 a god H410 EDS , or molten H5258 a graven image H6459 that is profitable H3276 for nothing H1115 L-NPAR ?
11 Behold H2005 IJEC , all H3605 NMS his fellows H2270 shall be ashamed H954 : and the workmen H2796 , they H1992 PPRO-3MP are of men H120 : let them all H3605 NMS be gathered together H6908 , let them stand up H5975 ; yet they shall fear H6342 , and they shall be ashamed H954 together H3162 ADV .
12 The blacksmith H2796 with the tongs H4621 both worketh H6466 in the coals H6352 , and fashioneth H3335 it with hammers H4717 , and worketh H6466 it with the strength H3581 CMS-3MS of his arms H2220 : yea H1571 CONJ , he is hungry H7456 AMS , and his strength H3581 CMS faileth H369 W-NPAR : he drinketh H8354 no H3808 NADV water H4325 OMD , and is faint H3286 .
13 The carpenter H2796 stretcheth out H5186 VQQ3MS his rule H6957 ; he marketh it out H8388 with a line H8279 ; he fitteth H6213 it with planes H4741 , and he marketh it out H8388 with the compass H4230 , and maketh H6213 it after the figure H8403 of a man H376 NMS , according to the beauty H8597 of a man H120 NMS ; that it may remain H3427 L-VQFC in the house H1004 .
14 He heweth him down H3772 cedars H730 , and taketh H3947 W-VQY3MS the cypress H8645 and the oak H437 , which he strengtheneth H553 for himself among the trees H6086 of the forest H3293 : he planteth H5193 an ash H766 , and the rain H1653 W-CMS doth nourish H1431 it .
15 Then shall it be H1961 W-VQQ3MS for a man H120 L-CMS to burn H1197 : for he will take H3947 W-VQY3MS thereof H4480 , and warm H2552 himself ; yea H637 CONJ , he kindleth H5400 it , and baketh H644 bread H3899 NMS ; yea H637 CONJ , he maketh H6466 VQY3MS a god H410 EDS , and worshipeth H7812 it ; he maketh H6213 VQQ3MS-3MS it a graven image H6459 , and falleth down H5456 thereto .
16 He burneth H8313 part H2677 thereof in H1119 PREP the fire H784 CMS ; with H5921 PREP part H2677 thereof he eateth H398 VQY3MS flesh H1320 NMS ; he roasteth H6740 roast H6748 , and is satisfied H7646 : yea H637 CONJ , he warmeth H2552 himself , and saith H559 , Aha H1889 IJEC , I am warm H2552 , I have seen H7200 VQQ1MS the fire H217 :
17 And the residue H7611 thereof he maketh H6213 VQQ3MS a god H410 L-NMS , even his graven image H6459 : he falleth down H5456 unto it , and worshipeth H7812 it , and prayeth H6419 unto H413 PREP-3MS it , and saith H559 , Deliver H5337 me ; for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art my god H410 .
18 They have not H3808 NADV known H3045 VQQ3MP nor H3808 W-NADV understood H995 VQY3MP : for H3588 CONJ he hath shut H2902 their eyes H5869 , that they cannot see H7200 ; and their hearts H3820 , that they cannot understand H7919 .
19 And none H3808 W-NPAR considereth H7725 VHY3MS in H413 PREP his heart H3820 CMS-3MS , neither H3808 W-NPAR is there knowledge H1847 NFS nor H3808 W-NPAR understanding H8394 to say H559 L-VQFC , I have burned H8313 part H2677 of it in H1119 PREP the fire H784 CMS ; yea H637 W-CONJ , also I have baked H644 bread H3899 NMS upon H5921 PREP the coals H1513 thereof ; I have roasted H6740 flesh H1320 NMS , and eaten H398 it : and shall I make H6213 the residue H3499 thereof an abomination H8441 ? shall I fall down H5456 to the stock H944 of a tree H6086 NMS ?
20 He feedeth H7462 VQPMS on ashes H665 NMS : a deceived H2048 heart H3820 NMS hath turned him aside H5186 , that he cannot H3808 W-NPAR deliver H5337 his soul H5315 NMS-3MS , nor H3808 W-NPAR say H559 VQY3MS , Is there not H3808 W-NPAR a lie H8267 NMS in my right hand H3225 ?
21 Remember H2142 VQI2MS these H428 PMP , O Jacob H3290 and Israel H3478 ; for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2FS art my servant H5650 CMS-1MS : I have formed H3335 thee ; thou H859 PPRO-2MS art my servant H5650 : O Israel H3478 , thou shalt not H3808 NADV be forgotten H5382 of me .
22 I have blotted out H4229 , as a thick cloud H5645 , thy transgressions H6588 , and , as a cloud H6051 , thy sins H2403 : return H7725 unto H413 PREP-1MS me ; for H3588 CONJ I have redeemed H1350 thee .

25 That frustrateth H6565 VHPMS the tokens H226 of the liars H907 , and maketh diviners mad H1984 ; that turneth H7725 VHPMS wise H2450 AMP men backward H268 , and maketh their knowledge foolish H5528 ;

27 That saith H559 D-VQPMS to the deep H6683 , Be dry H2717 , and I will dry up H3001 thy rivers H5104 :
28 That saith H559 D-VQPMS of Cyrus H3566 , He is my shepherd H7462 , and shall perform H7999 all H3605 W-CMS my pleasure H2656 CMS-1MS : even saying H559 to Jerusalem H3389 , Thou shalt be built H1129 VNY2MS ; and to the temple H1964 , Thy foundation shall be laid H3245 .
