2 Kings 6:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 The company of the prophets spoke to Elisha. They said, "Look. The place where we meet with you is too small for us.
2 We would like to go to the Jordan River. Each of us can get some wood there. We want to build a place there for us to live in." Elisha said, "Go."
3 Then one of them said, "Won't you please come with us?" "I will," Elisha replied.
4 And he went with them. They went to the Jordan. There they began to cut down trees.
5 One of them was cutting a tree down. The iron blade of his ax fell into the water. "Master!" he cried out. "This ax was borrowed!"
6 The man of God asked, "Where did the blade fall?" He showed him the place. Then Elisha cut a stick and threw it there. That made the iron blade float.
7 "Take it out of the water," he said. So the man reached out and took it.
8 The king of Aram was at war with Israel. He talked things over with his officers. Then he said, "I'm going to set up my camp in a certain place."
9 The man of God sent a message to the king of Israel. It said, "Try to stay away from that place. Aram's army is going to be down there."
10 The king of Israel checked on the place the man of God had told him about. Time after time Elisha warned the king. So the king was on guard in those places.
11 All of that made the king of Aram very angry. He sent for his officers. He said to them, "Tell me. Which of us is on the side of the king of Israel?"
12 "You are my king and master," said one of his officers. "None of us is on Israel's side. But Elisha is a prophet in Israel. He tells the king of Israel the very words you speak in your own bedroom."
13 "Go and find out where he is," the king ordered. "Then I can send my men and capture him." The report came back. It said, "He's in Dothan."
14 Then the king sent horses and chariots and a strong army there. They went at night and surrounded the city.
15 The servant of the man of God got up the next morning. He went out early. He saw that an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. "My master!" the servant said. "What can we do?"
16 "Don't be afraid," the prophet answered. "Those who are with us are more than those who are with them."
17 Elisha prayed, "Lord, open my servant's eyes so he can see." Then the Lord opened his eyes. He looked up and saw the hills. He saw that Elisha was surrounded by horses and chariots. Fire was all around them.
18 Aram's army came down toward Elisha. Then he prayed to the Lord. He said, "Make these soldiers blind." So the Lord made them blind, just as Elisha had prayed.
19 Elisha told them, "This isn't the right road. This isn't the right city. Follow me. I'll lead you to the man you are looking for." He led them to Samaria.
20 They entered the city. Then Elisha said, "Lord, open the eyes of these men. Help them see again." Then the Lord opened their eyes. They looked around. And there they were, inside Samaria!
21 The king of Israel saw them. So he asked Elisha, "Should I kill them? I need your advice. You are like a father to me. Should I kill them?"
22 "Don't kill them," he answered. "Would you kill men you have captured with your own sword or bow? Put some food and water in front of them. Then they can eat and drink. They can go back to their master."
23 So he prepared a big dinner for them. After they had finished eating and drinking, he sent them away. They returned to their master. So the companies of soldiers from Aram stopped attacking Israel's territory.
24 Some time later, Ben-Hadad gathered his entire army together. Ben-Hadad was the king of Aram. His army marched up and surrounded Samaria. Then they attacked it.
25 There wasn't enough food anywhere in the city. It was surrounded for so long that people had to weigh out two pounds of silver for a donkey's head. They had to weigh out two ounces of silver for half a pint of seed pods.
26 One day the king of Israel was walking on top of the wall. A woman cried out to him, "You are my king and master. Please help me!"
27 The king replied, "If the Lord doesn't help you, where can I get help for you? From the threshing floor? From the winepress?"
28 He continued, "What's wrong?" She answered, "A woman said to me, 'Give up your son. Then we can eat him today. Tomorrow we'll eat my son.'
29 So we cooked my son. Then we ate him. The next day I said to her, 'Give up your son. Then we can eat him.' But she had hidden him."
30 When the king heard the woman's words, he tore his royal robes. As he walked along the wall, the people looked up at him. They saw that he was wearing black clothes under his robes.
31 He said, "I'll cut the head of Shaphat's son Elisha off his shoulders today. If I don't, may God punish me greatly!"
32 Elisha was sitting in his house. The elders were sitting there with him. The king went to see Elisha. He sent a messenger on ahead of him. Before the messenger arrived, Elisha spoke to the elders. He said, "That murderer is sending someone here to cut my head off. Can't you see that? When the messenger comes, close the door. Hold it shut against him. Can't you hear his master's footsteps right behind him?"
33 Elisha was still talking to the elders when the messenger came down to him. The king also arrived. He said, "The Lord has sent this horrible trouble on us. Why should I wait any longer for him to help us?"

2 Let us go H1980 , we pray thee H4994 IJEC , unto H5704 PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS , and take H3947 thence H8033 M-ADV every man H376 NMS a H259 MFS beam H6982 , and let us make H6213 us a place H4725 NUM-MS there H8033 ADV , where H8033 ADV we may dwell H3427 L-VQFC . And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Go H1980 ye .
3 And one H259 D-AMS said H559 W-VQY3MS , Be content H2974 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and go H1980 with H854 PREP thy servants H5650 . And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS will go H1980 .
4 So he went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H854 PREP-3MP them . And when they came H935 W-VQY3MP to Jordan H3383 , they cut down H1504 wood H6086 .
5 But as one H259 D-AMS was H1961 W-VQY3MS felling H5307 a beam H6982 , the axe head H1270 fell H5307 into H413 PREP the water H4325 D-OMD : and he cried H6817 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Alas H162 , master H113 ! for it H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was borrowed H7592 .
6 And the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS , Where H575 ADV fell H5307 it ? And he showed H7200 him the place H4725 D-NMS . And he cut down H7094 a stick H6086 NMS , and cast H7993 it in thither H8033 ADV-3FS ; and the iron H1270 did swim H6687 .
7 Therefore said H559 W-VQY3MS he , Take it up H7311 to thee . And he put out H7971 W-VQY3MS his hand H3027 CFS-3MS , and took H3947 it .
8 Then the king H4428 of Syria H758 EMS warred H3898 against Israel H3478 , and took counsel H3289 with H413 PREP his servants H5650 , saying H559 L-VQFC , In H413 PREP such and such H6423 a place H4725 CMS shall be my camp H8466 .
9 And the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP sent H7971 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Beware H8104 VNI2MS that thou pass not H5674 M-VQFC such H2088 D-PMS a place H4725 D-NMS ; for H3588 CONJ thither H8033 ADV the Syrians H758 EMS are come down H5185 .
10 And the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the place H4725 D-NMS which H834 RPRO the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP told H559 him and warned H2094 him of , and saved himself H8104 there H8033 ADV , not H3808 NADV once H259 OFS nor H3808 W-NADV twice H8147 .
11 Therefore the heart H3820 NMS of the king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS was sore troubled H5590 for H5921 PREP this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS ; and he called H7121 W-VQY3MS his servants H5650 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , Will ye not H3808 D-NPAR show H5046 me which H4310 IPRO of us is for H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 LMS ?
12 And one H259 of his servants H5650 said H559 W-VQY3MS , None H3808 , my lord H113 , O king H4428 D-NMS : but H3588 CONJ Elisha H477 , the prophet H5030 that H834 RPRO is in Israel H3478 , telleth H5046 VHY3MS the king H4428 L-CMS of Israel H3478 the words H1697 AMP that H834 RPRO thou speakest H1696 in thy bedchamber H2315 .
13 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go H1980 VQI2MP and spy H7200 where H351 he H1931 PPRO-3MS is , that I may send H7971 and fetch H3947 him . And it was told H5046 him , saying H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , he is in Dothan H1886 .
14 Therefore sent H7971 W-VQY3MS he thither H8033 ADV-3FS horses H5483 , and chariots H7393 , and a great H3515 VQS3MS host H2428 : and they came H935 W-VQY3MP by night H3915 GMS , and compassed H5362 the city H5892 D-GFS about .
15 And when the servant H8334 of the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP was risen H6965 early H7925 , and gone forth H3318 W-VQY3MS , behold H2009 IJEC , a host H2428 NMS compassed H5437 the city H5892 D-GFS both with horses H5483 and chariots H7393 . And his servant H5288 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Alas H162 , my master H113 ! how H349 shall we do H6213 ?
16 And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Fear H3372 not H408 NPAR : for H3588 CONJ they that H834 RPRO be with H854 PREP-1MP us are more H7227 AMP than they that RPRO be with H854 them .
17 And Elisha H477 prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , LORD H3068 EDS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , open H6491 his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , that he may see H7200 W-VIY3MS . And the LORD H3068 EDS opened H6491 the eyes H5869 CMD of the young man H5288 ; and he saw H7200 W-VIY3MS : and , behold H2009 IJEC , the mountain H2022 was full H4390 VQQ3MS of horses H5483 and chariots H7393 of fire H784 CMS round about H5439 Elisha H477 .
18 And when they came down H3381 to H413 PREP-3MS him , Elisha H477 prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Smite H5221 this H2088 D-PMS people H1471 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , with blindness H5575 . And he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them with blindness H5575 according to the word H1697 K-NMS of Elisha H477 .
19 And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP them , This H2088 DPRO is not H3808 NADV the way H1870 D-NMS , neither H3808 W-NADV is this H2090 the city H5892 D-GFS : follow H1980 VQI2MP me , and I will bring H1980 you to H413 PREP the man H376 D-NMS whom H834 RPRO ye seek H1245 . But he led H1980 them to Samaria H8111 .
20 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when they were come H935 into Samaria H8111 , that Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS , LORD H3068 EDS , open H6491 the eyes H5869 of these H428 PMP men , that they may see H7200 . And the LORD H3068 EDS opened H6491 their eyes H5869 CMD-3MP , and they saw H7200 W-VQY3MP ; and , behold H2009 IJEC , they were in the midst H8432 B-NMS of Samaria H8111 .
21 And the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Elisha H477 , when he saw H7200 them , My father H1 , shall I smite H5221 them ? shall I smite H5221 them ?
22 And he answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Thou shalt not H3808 NADV smite H5221 them : wouldest thou H859 PPRO-2MS smite H5221 those whom H834 thou hast taken captive H7617 with thy sword H2719 and with thy bow H7198 ? set H7760 VQFC bread H3899 NMS and water H4325 before H6440 L-CMP-3MP them , that they may eat H398 and drink H8354 , and go H1980 to H413 PREP their master H113 .
23 And he prepared H3739 great H1419 AFS provision H3740 for them : and when they had eaten H398 and drunk H8354 , he sent them away H7971 W-VPY3MS-3MP , and they went H1980 W-VQY3MP to H413 PREP their master H113 . So the bands H1416 of Syria H758 EMS came H935 L-VQFC no H3808 W-NPAR more H3254 into the land H776 B-GFS of Israel H3478 LMS .
24 And it came to pass H1961 W-VPY3MS after H310 PREP this H3651 ADV , that Ben H1130 - hadad king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS gathered H6908 all H3605 NMS his host H4264 , and went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and besieged H6696 Samaria H8111 .
25 And there was H1961 W-VQY3MS a great H1419 AMS famine H7458 NMS in Samaria H8111 : and , behold H2009 IJEC , they besieged H6696 it , until H5704 PREP an ass H2543 CMS \'s head H7218 NMS was H1961 VQFC sold for fourscore H8084 pieces of silver H3701 NMS , and the fourth part H7255 of a cab H6894 of dove\'s dung H1686 for five H2568 pieces of silver H3701 .
26 And as the king H4428 NMS of Israel H3478 was H1961 W-VPY3MS passing by H5674 upon H5921 PREP the wall H2346 , there cried H6817 a woman H802 unto H413 PREP-3MS him , saying H559 L-VQFC , Help H3467 , my lord H113 , O king H4428 NMS .
27 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , If the LORD H3068 EDS do not H408 NPAR help H3467 thee , whence H370 M-ADV shall I help H3467 thee ? out of H4480 PREP the barnfloor H1637 , or H176 CONJ out of H4480 PREP the winepress H3342 ?
28 And the king H4428 D-NMS said H559 unto her , What H4100 IPRO aileth thee ? And she answered H559 W-VQY3FS , This H2063 D-DFS woman H802 D-NFS said H559 VQQ3FS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Give H5414 thy son H1121 NMS-1MS , that we may eat H398 him today H3117 D-AMS , and we will eat H398 my son H1121 NMS-1MS tomorrow H4279 .
29 So we boiled H1310 my son H1121 NMS-1MS , and did eat H398 him : and I said H559 W-VQY1MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her on the next H312 day H3117 B-AMS , Give H5414 thy son H1121 NMS-1MS , that we may eat H398 him : and she hath hid H2244 her son H1121 NMS-1MS .
30 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the king H4428 D-NMS heard H8085 the words H1697 CMP of the woman H802 D-NFS , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 ; and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS passed by H5674 upon H5921 PREP the wall H2346 , and the people H5971 looked H7200 W-VIY3MS , and , behold H2009 IJEC , he had sackcloth H8242 within H1004 upon H5921 PREP his flesh H1320 CMS-3MS .
31 Then he said H559 W-VQY3MS , God H430 EDP do H6213 VQY3MS so H3541 and more H3254 also H3541 to me , if H518 PART the head H7218 NMS of Elisha H477 the son H1121 of Shaphat H8202 shall stand H5975 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP-3MS him this day H3117 D-NMS .
32 But Elisha H477 sat H3427 VQPMS in his house H1004 B-CMS-3MS , and the elders H2205 sat H3427 with H854 PREP-3MS him ; and the king sent H7971 W-VQY3MS a man H376 NMS from before H6440 him : but ere H2962 B-ADV the messenger H4397 came H935 VQY3MS to H413 PREP-3MS him , he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS said H559 VQQ3MS to H413 PREP the elders H2205 , See H7200 ye how H3588 CONJ this H2088 D-PMS son H1121 of a murderer H7523 hath sent H7971 VQQ3MS to take away H5493 L-VHFC mine head H7218 CMS-1MS ? look H7200 , when the messenger H4397 cometh H935 , shut H5462 the door H1817 , and hold him fast H3905 at the door H1817 : is not H3808 D-NPAR the sound H6963 CMS of his master H113 \'s feet H7272 behind H310 him ?
33 And while he yet H5750 talked H1696 VPPMS with H5973 PREP-3MP them , behold H2009 IJEC , the messenger H4397 came down H3381 unto H413 PREP-3MS him : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Behold H2009 IJEC , this H2063 DPRO evil H7451 D-AFS is of the LORD H3068 EDS ; what H4100 IGAT should I wait H3176 for the LORD H3068 L-EDS any longer H5750 ADV ?
