Judges 11:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Jephthah was a mighty warrior. He was from the land of Gilead. His father's name was Gilead. Jephthah's mother was a prostitute.
2 Gilead's wife also had sons by him. When they had grown up, they drove Jephthah away. "You aren't going to get any share of our family's property," they said. "You are the son of another woman."
3 So Jephthah ran away from his brothers. He settled in the land of Tob. A group of men who weren't good for anything gathered around him there. And they followed him.
4 Some time later, the Ammonites went to war against Israel.
5 So the elders of Gilead went to get Jephthah from the land of Tob.
6 "Come with us," they said. "Be our commander. Then we can fight against the Ammonites."
7 Jephthah said to them, "Didn't you hate me? Didn't you drive me away from my father's house? Why are you coming to me only when you are in trouble?"
8 The elders of Gilead replied to him. "You are right," they said. "That's why we're turning to you now. Come with us and fight against the Ammonites. Then you will be our leader. You will rule over everyone who lives in Gilead."
9 Jephthah said, "Suppose you take me back to fight against the Ammonites. And suppose the Lord gives them over to me. Then will I really be your leader?"
10 The elders of Gilead replied, "The Lord is our witness. We'll certainly do as you say."
11 So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead. And the people made him their leader and commander. He went to Mizpah. There he repeated to the Lord everything he had said.
12 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of Ammon. They asked, "What do you have against us? Why have you attacked our country?"
13 The king of Ammon answered Jephthah's messengers. He said, "Israel came up out of Egypt. At that time they took my land away. They took all of the land that was between the Arnon River and the Jabbok River. It reached all the way to the Jordan River. Now give it back. Then there will be peace."
14 Jephthah sent messengers back to the king of Ammon.
15 They said, "Here is what Jephthah says to you. Israel didn't take the land of Moab. They didn't take the land of Ammon.
16 When Israel came up out of Egypt, they went through the desert to the Red Sea. From there they went on to Kadesh.
17 "Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom. They said, 'Please let us go through your country.' But the king of Edom wouldn't listen to them. "They sent the same message to the king of Moab. But he refused too. So Israel stayed at Kadesh.
18 "Next, they traveled through the desert. They traveled along the borders of the lands of Edom and Moab. They passed along the east side of the country of Moab. They camped on the other side of the Arnon River. They didn't enter the territory of Moab. The Arnon River was Moab's border.
19 "Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon. He was the king of the Amorites. He ruled in Heshbon. They said to him, 'Let us pass through your country to our own land.'
20 "But Sihon didn't trust Israel to pass through his territory. Instead, he gathered all of his men together. They camped at Jahaz. And they fought against Israel.
21 "Then the Lord, the God of Israel, handed Sihon and all of his men over to Israel. Israel won the battle over them. Amorites were living in the country at that time. And Israel took over all of their land.
22 They captured all of the land that was between the Arnon River and the Jabbok River. It reached from the desert all the way to the Jordan River.
23 "The Lord, the God of Israel, has driven the Amorites out to make room for his people. So what right do you have to take it over?
24 You will take what your god Chemosh gives you, won't you? In the same way, we will take over what the Lord our God has given us.
25 Are you better than Balak, the son of Zippor? Balak was the king of Moab. Did he ever argue with Israel? Did he ever fight against them?
26 "For 300 years Israel has been living in Heshbon and Aroer. They have been living in the settlements that are around those cities. They have also been living in all of the towns that are along the Arnon River. Why didn't you take those places back during that time?
27 "I haven't done anything wrong to you. But you are doing something wrong to me. You have gone to war against me. The Lord is the Judge. So let him decide our case today. Let him settle matters between the people of Israel and the people of Ammon."
28 But the king of Ammon didn't pay any attention to the message Jephthah sent him.
29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came on Jephthah. He went across the territories of Gilead and Manasseh. He passed through Mizpah in the land of Gilead. From there he attacked the people of Ammon.
30 Jephthah made a promise to the Lord. He said, "Hand the Ammonites over to me.
31 If you do, here's what I'll do when I come back from winning the battle. Anything that comes out the door of my house to meet me will belong to you. I will sacrifice it as a burnt offering."
32 Then Jephthah went over to fight against the Ammonites. The Lord handed them over to him.
33 Jephthah destroyed 20 towns between Aroer and the area of Minnith. He destroyed them all the way to Abel Keramim. So Israel brought Ammon under their control.
34 Jephthah returned to his home in Mizpah. And guess who came out to meet him. It was his daughter! She was dancing to the music of tambourines. She was his only child. He didn't have any other sons or daughters.
35 When Jephthah saw her, he was so upset that he tore his clothes. He cried out, "My daughter! You have filled me with trouble and sorrow. I've made a promise to the Lord. And I can't break it."
36 "My father," she replied, "you have given your word to the Lord. So do to me just what you promised to do. The Ammonites were your enemies. And the Lord has paid them back for what they did to you.
37 "But please do one thing for me," she continued. "Give me two months to wander around in the hills. Let me sob there with my friends. I want to do that because I'll never get married."
38 "You can go," he said. He let her go for two months. She and her friends went into the hills. They were filled with sadness because she would never get married.
39 After the two months were over, she returned to her father. He did to her just what he had promised to do. And she was a virgin. So that became a practice in Israel.
40 Each year the young women of Israel go away for four days. They do it in honor of the daughter of Jephthah. He was from the land of Gilead.
1 Now Jephthah H3316 the Gileadite H1569 was H1961 VQQ3MS a mighty man H1368 AMS of valor H2428 NMS , and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS was the son H1121 of a harlot H2181 : and Gilead H1568 begot H3205 W-VHY3MS Jephthah H3316 .
2 And Gilead H1568 \'s wife H802 CFS bore H3205 W-VQY3FS him sons H1121 NMP ; and his wife H802 D-NFS \'s sons H1121 grew up H1431 , and they thrust out H1644 Jephthah H3316 , and said H559 W-VQY3MP unto him , Thou shalt not H3808 ADV inherit H5157 in our father H1 \'s house H1004 B-CMS ; for H3588 CONJ thou H859 PPRO-2MS art the son H1121 NMP of a strange H312 woman H802 NFS .
3 Then Jephthah H3316 fled H1272 W-VQY3MS from M-CMP his brethren H251 NMP-3MS , and dwelt H3427 W-VQY3MS in the land H776 B-GFS of Tob H2897 : and there were gathered H3950 vain H7386 men H376 to H413 PREP Jephthah H3316 , and went out H3318 W-VQY3MP with H5973 PREP-3MS him .
4 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS in process of time H3117 , that the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 made war H3898 against H5973 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
5 And it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , that when H834 K-RPRO the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 made war H3898 against H5973 PREP Israel H3478 , the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 went H1980 W-VQY3MP to fetch H3947 L-VQFC Jephthah H3316 out of the land H776 M-NFS of Tob H2897 :
6 And they said H559 W-VQY3MP unto Jephthah H3316 , Come H1980 VQI2MS-3FS , and be H1961 our captain H7101 , that we may fight H3898 with the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
7 And Jephthah H3316 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 , Did not H3808 I-NADV ye H859 PPRO-2MS hate H8130 me , and expel H1644 me out of my father H1 CMS-1MS \'s house H1004 ? and why H4069 are ye come H935 unto H413 PREP-1MS me now H6258 ADV when H834 K-RPRO ye are in distress H6862 AMS ?
8 And the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Jephthah H3316 , Therefore H3651 L-ADV we turn again H7725 to H413 PREP thee now H6258 ADV , that thou mayest go H1980 with H5973 PREP-1MP us , and fight H3898 against the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , and be H1961 W-VQQ2MS our head H7218 over all H3605 the inhabitants H3427 of Gilead H1568 .
9 And Jephthah H3316 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 , If H518 PART ye H859 PPRO-2MS bring me home again H7725 to fight H3898 against the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , and the LORD H3068 EDS deliver H5414 W-VQQ3MS them before H6440 me , shall I H595 PPRO-1MS be H1961 VQY1MS your head H7218 ?
10 And the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 said H559 W-VQY3MP unto H413 PREP Jephthah H3316 , The LORD H3068 EDS be H1961 VQY3MS witness H8085 between H996 us , if H518 PART we do H6213 not H3808 NADV so H3651 ADV according to thy words H1697 .
11 Then Jephthah H3316 went H1980 W-VQY3MS with H5973 PREP the elders H2205 of Gilead H1568 , and the people H5971 made H7760 W-VQY3MP him head H7218 and captain H7101 over H5921 PREP-3MP them : and Jephthah H3316 uttered H1696 W-VPY3MS all H3605 NMS his words H1697 CMP-3MS before H6440 L-CMP the LORD H3068 EDS in Mizpeh H4709 .
12 And Jephthah H3316 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , saying H559 L-VQFC , What H4100 IPRO hast thou to do with me , that H3588 CONJ thou art come H935 against H413 PREP me to fight H3898 in my land H776 ?
13 And the king H4428 NMS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 answered H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the messengers H4397 of Jephthah H3316 , Because H3588 CONJ Israel H3478 took away H3947 VQQ3MS my land H776 , when they came up H5927 out of Egypt H4714 M-TFS , from Arnon H769 even unto H5704 W-PREP Jabbok H2999 , and unto H5704 W-PREP Jordan H3383 D-EFS : now H6258 W-ADV therefore restore those lands again H7725 peaceably H7965 .
14 And Jephthah H3316 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 again H3254 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 :
15 And said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS Jephthah H3316 , Israel H3478 took not away H3947 VQQ3MS the land H776 GFS of Moab H4124 , nor the land H776 GFS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 :
16 But H3588 CONJ when Israel H3478 came up H5927 from Egypt H4714 , and walked H1980 W-VQY3MS through the wilderness H4057 unto H5704 PREP the Red H5488 NMS sea H3220 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to Kadesh H6946 ;
17 Then Israel H3478 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Let me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , pass H5674 through thy land H776 : but the king H4428 NMS of Edom H123 would not H3808 W-NPAR hearken H8085 thereto . And in like manner H1571 W-CONJ they sent H7971 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 : but he would H14 not H3808 W-NPAR consent : and Israel H3478 abode H3427 W-VQY3MS in Kadesh H6946 .
18 Then they went along H1980 W-VQY3MS through the wilderness H4057 , and compassed H5437 the land H776 GFS of Edom H123 , and the land H776 GFS of Moab H4124 , and came H935 VQQ3MP by the east side H4217 of the land H776 of Moab H4124 , and pitched H2583 on the other side H5676 of Arnon H769 , but came H935 VQQ3MP not H3808 W-NPAR within the border H1366 of Moab H4124 : for H3588 CONJ Arnon H769 was the border H1366 CMS of Moab H4124 .
19 And Israel H3478 sent H7971 W-VQY3MS messengers H4397 unto H413 PREP Sihon H5511 king H4428 NMS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , the king H4428 NMS of Heshbon H2809 ; and Israel H3478 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Let us pass H5674 , we pray thee H4994 IJEC , through thy land H776 into H5704 PREP my place H4725 .
20 But Sihon H5511 trusted H539 not H3808 W-NPAR Israel H3478 to pass H5674 through his coast H1366 : but Sihon H5511 gathered all his people together H622 , and pitched H2583 in Jahaz H3096 , and fought H3898 against H5973 PREP Israel H3478 LMS .
21 And the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 of Israel H3478 delivered H5414 W-VQQ3MS Sihon H5511 and all H3605 NMS his people H5971 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of Israel H3478 , and they smote H5221 them : so Israel H3478 possessed H3423 all H3605 NMS the land H776 GFS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , the inhabitants H3427 VQPMS of that H1931 country H776 D-GFS .
22 And they possessed H3423 all H3605 NMS the coasts H1366 CMS of the Amorites H567 D-TMS , from Arnon H769 even unto H5704 W-PREP Jabbok H2999 , and from H4480 W-PREP the wilderness H4057 D-NMS even unto H5704 W-PREP Jordan H3383 .
23 So now H6258 W-ADV the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 hath dispossessed H3423 the Amorites H567 D-TMS from before H6440 M-CMP his people H5971 Israel H3478 , and shouldest thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS possess H3423 it ?
24 Wilt not H3808 I-NADV thou possess H3423 that which H834 RPRO Chemosh H3645 thy god H430 CMP-2MS giveth thee to possess H3423 ? So whomsoever H834 RPRO the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 CMP-2MS shall drive out H3423 from before H6440 us , them will we possess H3423 .
25 And now H6258 W-ADV art thou H859 PPRO-2MS any thing better H2896 AMS than Balak H1111 the son H1121 of Zippor H6834 , king H4428 NMS of Moab H4124 ? did he ever strive H7378 against H5973 PREP Israel H3478 , or H518 PART did he ever fight H3898 against them ,
26 While Israel H3478 dwelt H3427 in Heshbon H2809 and her towns H1323 , and in Aroer H6177 and her towns H1323 , and in all H3605 WB-CMS the cities H5892 that H834 RPRO be along by H5921 PREP the coasts H3027 CFD of Arnon H769 , three H7969 BFS hundred H3967 BFP years H8141 NFS ? why H4069 therefore did ye not H3808 ADV recover H5337 them within that H1931 time H6256 ?
27 Wherefore I H595 have not H3808 ADV sinned H2398 VQQ1MS against thee , but thou H859 W-PPRO-2MS doest H6213 VQPMS me wrong H7451 AFS to war H3898 against me : the LORD H3068 EDS the Judge H8199 be judge H8199 this day H3117 D-AMS between H996 PREP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 and the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
28 Howbeit the king H4428 NMS of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 hearkened H8085 not H3808 W-NPAR unto H413 PREP the words H1697 CMP of Jephthah H3316 which H834 RPRO he sent H7971 VQQ3MS him .
29 Then the Spirit H7307 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS came H1961 W-VQY3FS upon H5921 PREP Jephthah H3316 , and he passed over H5674 W-VQY3MS Gilead H1568 , and Manasseh H4519 , and passed over H5674 Mizpeh H4708 of Gilead H1568 , and from Mizpeh H4708 of Gilead H1568 he passed over H5674 VQQ3MS unto the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
30 And Jephthah H3316 vowed H5087 a vow H5088 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , If H518 PART thou shalt without fail deliver H5414 the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 into mine hands H3027 ,
31 Then it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that whatsoever H834 RPRO cometh forth H3318 of the doors H1817 of my house H1004 CMS-1MS to meet H7125 me , when I return H7725 in peace H7965 from the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 , shall surely be H1961 W-VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 L-EDS \'s , and I will offer it up H5927 for a burnt offering H5930 .
32 So Jephthah H3316 passed over H5674 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 to fight H3898 against them ; and the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 them into his hands H3027 B-CFS-3MS .
33 And he smote H5221 W-VHY3MS-3MP them from Aroer H6177 , even till H5704 W-PREP thou come H935 to Minnith H4511 , even twenty H6242 cities H5892 GFS , and unto H5704 W-PREP the plain H58 of the vineyards H3754 , with a very H3966 ADV great H1419 AMS-3FS slaughter H4347 . Thus the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 were subdued H3665 before H6440 M-CMP the children H1121 of Israel H3478 LMS .
34 And Jephthah H3316 came H935 W-VQY3MS to Mizpeh H4709 unto H413 PREP his house H1004 NMS-3MS , and , behold H2009 IJEC , his daughter H1323 came out H3318 to meet H7125 L-VQFC-3MS him with timbrels H8596 and with dances H4246 : and she H1931 PPRO-3FS was his only child H3173 ; beside H4480 M-PREP-3MS her he had neither H369 ADV son H1121 NMS nor H176 CONJ daughter H1323 .
35 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when he saw H7200 her , that he rent H7167 W-VQY3MS his clothes H899 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Alas H162 , my daughter H1323 ! thou hast brought me very low H3766 , and thou H859 art H1961 one of them that trouble H5916 me : for I H595 W-PPRO-1MS have opened H6475 my mouth H6310 CMS-1MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and I cannot H3808 W-NPAR go back H7725 .
36 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , My father H1 CMS-1MS , if thou hast opened H6475 thy mouth H6310 CMS-2MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , do H6213 VQI2MS to me according to that which H834 RPRO hath proceeded out H3318 VQQ3MS of thy mouth H6310 M-CMS-2MS ; forasmuch H310 PREP as the LORD H3068 EDS hath taken H6213 VQQ3MS vengeance H5360 for thee of thine enemies H341 , even of the children H1121 of Ammon H5983 .
37 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP her father H1 , Let this H2088 D-PMS thing H1697 D-NMS be done H6213 for me : let me alone H7503 two H8147 ONUM months H2320 , that I may go up H1980 and down H3381 upon H5921 PREP the mountains H2022 , and bewail H1058 my virginity H1331 , I H595 PPRO-1MS and my fellows H7464 .
38 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go H1980 . And he sent her away H7971 W-VQY3MS for two H8147 ONUM months H2320 : and she H1931 PPRO-3FS went H1980 W-VQQ3FS with her companions H7464 , and bewailed H1058 her virginity H1331 upon H5921 PREP the mountains H2022 D-NMP .
39 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS at the end H7093 M-CMS of two H8147 ONUM months H2320 , that she returned H7725 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP her father H1 , who did H6213 W-VQY3MS with her according to his vow H5088 which H834 RPRO he had vowed H5087 : and she H1931 knew H3045 no H3808 NADV man H376 NMS . And it was H1961 W-VQY3FS a custom H2706 NMS in Israel H3478 ,
40 That the daughters H1323 CFP of Israel H3478 went H1980 yearly H3117 to lament H8567 the daughter H1323 of Jephthah H3316 the Gileadite H1569 four H702 days H3117 in a year H8141 .
