Isaiah 21:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Here is a message the Lord gave me about Babylonia. It is known as the Desert by the Two Rivers. An attack is coming through the desert. It is coming from a land of terror. It's sweeping along like a windstorm blowing across the Negev Desert.
2 I have seen a vision about something terrible that will happen. People are turning against Babylon. Robbers are taking its goods. Elamites, attack the city! Medes, surround it! The Lord will put an end to all of the suffering Babylon has caused.
3 The vision fills my body with pain. Pains take hold of me. They are like the pains of a woman having a baby. I am shaken by what I hear. I'm terrified by what I see.
4 My heart grows weak. Fear makes me tremble. I longed for evening to come. But it brought me horror instead of rest.
5 In my vision the Babylonians set the tables. They spread the rugs out. They eat. They drink. Get up, you officers! Rub your shields with oil!
6 The Lord said to me, "Go. Put a guard on duty on Jerusalem's walls. Have him report what he sees.
7 Tell him to watch for chariots that are pulled by teams of horses. Tell him to watch for men riding on donkeys or camels. Make sure he stays awake. Make sure he stays wide awake."
8 "My master!" the guard shouts back. "Day after day I stand here on the lookout tower. Every night I stay here on duty.
9 Look! Here comes a man in a chariot! It's being pulled by a team of horses. He's calling out the news, 'Babylon has fallen! It has fallen! All of the statues of its gods lie broken in pieces on the ground!' "
10 My people, you have been crushed like grain on a threshing floor. But now I'm telling you the good news I've heard. It comes from the Lord who rules over all. He is the God of Israel.
11 Here is a message the Lord gave me about Edom. Someone is calling out to me from the land of Seir. He says, "Guard, when will the night be over? Guard, how soon will it end?"
12 The guard answers, "Morning is coming. But the night will return. If you want to ask again, come back and ask."
13 Here is a message the Lord gave me about Arabia. He told me to give orders to traders from Dedan. They were camping in the bushes of Arabia.
14 I told them to bring water for those who are thirsty. I also gave orders to those who live in Tema. I told them to bring food for those who are running away.
15 They are running away from where the fighting is heaviest. That's where the swords are ready to strike. That's where the bows are ready to shoot.
16 The Lord says to me, "In exactly one year, Kedar's grand show of power will come to an end.
17 Only a few of Kedar's soldiers who shoot arrows will be left alive." The Lord has spoken. He is the God of Israel.

2 A grievous H7186 vision H2380 is declared H5046 unto me ; the treacherous dealer H898 dealeth treacherously H898 , and the spoiler H7703 spoileth H7703 VQPMS . Go up H5927 , O Elam H5867 EMS : besiege H6696 , O Media H4074 ; all H3605 NMS the sighing H585 thereof have I made to cease H7673 .
3 Therefore H5921 PREP are my loins H4975 filled H4390 VQQ3MP with pain H2479 : pangs H6735 have taken hold H270 upon me , as the pangs H6735 of a woman that travaileth H3205 : I was bowed down H5753 at the hearing H8085 of it ; I was dismayed H926 at the seeing H7200 of it .
4 My heart H3824 CMS-1MS panted H8582 , fearfulness H6427 frightened H1204 me : the night H5399 NMS of my pleasure H2837 hath he turned H7760 VQQ3MS into fear H2731 unto me .
5 Prepare H6186 the table H7979 , watch H6822 in the watchtower H6844 , eat H398 , drink H8354 : arise H6965 , ye princes H8269 , and anoint H4886 the shield H4043 .
6 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 hath the Lord H136 EDS said H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , Go H1980 VQI2MS , set H5975 a watchman H6822 , let him declare H5046 what H834 RPRO he seeth H7200 VQY3MS .
7 And he saw H7200 a chariot H7393 with a couple H6776 NMS of horsemen H6571 , a chariot H7393 of asses H2543 CMS , and a chariot H7393 of camels H1581 ; and he hearkened H7181 diligently H7182 with much H7227 AMS heed H7182 :
8 And he cried H7121 W-VQY3MS , A lion H738 NMS : My lord H113 , I H595 PPRO-1MS stand H5975 continually H8548 upon H5921 PREP the watchtower H4707 in the daytime H3119 ADV , and I H595 PPRO-1MS am set H5324 in H5921 PREP my ward H4931 whole H3605 NMS nights H3915 :
9 And , behold H2009 IJEC , here H2088 DPRO cometh H935 a chariot H7393 of men H376 NMS , with a couple H6776 NMS of horsemen H6571 . And he answered H6030 W-VQY3MS and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Babylon H894 LFS is fallen H5307 , is fallen H5307 VQQ3FS ; and all H3605 W-CMS the graven images H6456 of her gods H430 he hath broken H7665 unto the ground H776 .
10 O my threshing H4098 , and the corn H1121 W-CMS of my floor H1637 : that which H834 RPRO I have heard H8085 VQQ1MS of the LORD H3068 EDS of hosts H6635 , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 , have I declared H5046 VHQ1MS unto you .
11 The burden H4853 of Dumah H1746 . He calleth H7121 VQPMS to H413 PREP-1MS me out of Seir H8165 , Watchman H8104 , what H4100 IPRO of the night H3915 ? Watchman H8104 , what H4100 IPRO of the night H3915 ?
12 The watchman H8104 said H559 VQQ3MS , The morning H1242 NUM-MS cometh H857 , and also H1571 W-CONJ the night H3915 NFS : if H518 PART ye will inquire H1158 , inquire H1158 ye : return H7725 , come H857 .
13 The burden H4853 upon Arabia H6152 . In the forest H3293 in Arabia H6152 shall ye lodge H3885 , O ye traveling companies H736 of Dedanim H1720 .
14 The inhabitants H3427 of the land H776 GFS of Tema H8485 brought H857 water H4325 NMD to him that was thirsty H6771 , they prevented H6923 with their bread H3899 him that fled H5074 .
15 For H3588 CONJ they fled H5074 from M-CMP the swords H2719 , from M-CMP the drawn H5203 sword H2719 GFS , and from M-CMP the bent H1869 bow H7198 CFS , and from M-CMP the grievousness H3514 of war H4421 .
16 For H3588 CONJ thus H3541 hath the Lord H136 EDS said H559 VQQ3MS unto H413 me , Within H5750 B-ADV a year H8141 NFS , according to the years H8141 of a hireling H7916 AMS , and all H3605 NMS the glory H3519 of Kedar H6938 shall fail H3615 :
17 And the residue H7605 of the number H4557 CMS of archers H7198 CFS , the mighty men H1368 of the children H1121 of Kedar H6938 , shall be diminished H4591 : for H3588 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS God H430 of Israel H3478 hath spoken H1696 it .
