2 Kings 12:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Joash became king of Judah. It was in the seventh year of Jehu's rule. Joash ruled in Jerusalem for 40 years. His mother's name was Zibiah. She was from Beersheba.
2 Joash did what was right in the eyes of the Lord. He lived that way as long as the priest Jehoiada was teaching him.
3 But the high places weren't removed. The people continued to offer sacrifices and burn incense there.
4 Joash spoke to the priests. He said, "Collect all of the money the people bring as sacred offerings to the Lord's temple. That includes the money that is collected when the men who are able to serve in the army are counted. It includes the money that is received from people who make a special promise to the Lord. It also includes the money people bring to the temple just because they want to.
5 "Let each priest receive the money from one of the people who are in charge of the temple's treasures. Let all of that money be used to repair the temple where it needs it."
6 It was now the 23rd year of King Joash. And the priests still hadn't repaired the temple.
7 So the king sent for the priest Jehoiada and the other priests. He asked them, "Why aren't you repairing the temple where it needs it? Don't take any more money from the people who are in charge of the treasures. Instead, hand it over so the temple can be repaired."
8 The priests agreed that they wouldn't collect any more money from the people. They also agreed that they wouldn't repair the temple themselves.
9 The priest Jehoiada got a chest. He drilled a hole in its lid. He placed the chest beside the altar for burnt offerings. The chest was on the right side as people enter the Lord's temple. Some priests guarded the entrance. They put into the chest all of the money the people brought to the temple.
10 From time to time there was a large amount of money in the chest. When that happened, the royal secretary and the high priest came. They counted the money the people had brought to the temple. Then they put it into bags.
11 After they added it all up, they used it to repair the temple. They gave it to the men who had been put in charge of the work. Those men used it to pay the workers. They paid the builders and those who worked with wood.
12 They paid those who cut stones and those who laid them. They bought lumber and blocks of stone. So they used the money to repair the Lord's temple. They also paid all of the other costs to make the temple like new again.
13 The money the people brought to the Lord's temple wasn't used to make silver bowls. It wasn't used for wick cutters, sprinkling bowls or trumpets. And it wasn't used for any other articles made out of gold or silver.
14 Instead, it was paid to the workers. They used it to repair the temple.
15 The royal secretary and the high priest didn't require a report from those who were in charge of the work. That's because they were completely honest. They always paid the workers.
16 Money was received from those who brought guilt offerings and sin offerings. But it wasn't taken to the Lord's temple. It belonged to the priests.
17 About that time Hazael, the king of Aram, went up and attacked Gath. Then he captured it. After that, he turned back to attack Jerusalem.
18 But Joash, the king of Judah, didn't want to go to war. So he got all of the sacred objects. They had been set apart to the Lord by the kings who had ruled over Judah before him. They were Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah. Joash got the gifts he himself had set apart. He got all of the gold that was among the temple treasures. He also got all of the gold from the royal palace. He sent all of those things to Hazael, the king of Aram. Then Hazael pulled his army back from Jerusalem.
19 The other events of the rule of Joash are written down. Everything he did is written down. All of those things are written in the official records of the kings of Judah.
20 The officials of Joash made evil plans against him. They killed him at Beth Millo. It happened on the road that goes down to Silla.
21 The officials who murdered him were Jozabad and Jehozabad. Jozabad was the son of Shimeath. Jehozabad was the son of Shomer. After Joash died, his body was buried in the family tomb in the City of David. His son Amaziah became the next king after him.

2 And Jehoash H3060 did H6213 W-VQY3MS that which was right H3477 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS all H3605 NMS his days H3117 CMP-3MS wherein H834 RPRO Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 instructed H3384 him .
3 But H7535 ADV the high places H1116 were not H3808 NADV taken away H5493 VQQ3MP : the people H5971 still H5750 ADV sacrificed H2076 and burnt incense H6999 in the high places H1116 .
4 And Jehoash H3060 said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the priests H3548 , All H3605 NMS the money H3701 NMS of the dedicated things H6944 that H834 RPRO is brought H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , even the money H3701 NMS of every one that passeth H5674 the account , the money H3701 NMS that every man H5315 is set at H6187 , and all H3605 NMS the money H3701 NMS that H834 RPRO cometh H5927 VQY3MS into H5921 PREP any man H376 NMS \'s heart H3820 to bring H935 L-VHFC into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS ,
5 Let the priests H3548 take H3947 VQY3MP it to them , every man H376 NMS of his acquaintance H4378 : and let them H1992 W-PPRO-3MP repair H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 D-NMS , wheresoever H834 RPRO any breach H919 shall be found H4672 .
6 But it was H1961 W-VQY3MS so , that in the three H7969 and twentieth H6242 year H8141 B-CFS of king H4428 Jehoash H3060 the priests H3548 had not H3808 ADV repaired H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 .
7 Then king H4428 D-NMS Jehoash H3060 called H7121 W-VQY3MS for Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 , and the other priests H3548 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3MS them , Why H4069 IPRO repair H2388 ye not H369 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 ? now H6258 W-ADV therefore receive H3947 no H408 NPAR more money H3701 of your acquaintance H4378 , but H3588 CONJ deliver H5414 it for the breaches H919 of the house H1004 D-NMS .
8 And the priests H3548 consented H225 to receive H3947 no H1115 L-NPAR more money H3701 NMS of the people H5971 , neither H1115 to repair H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 .
9 But Jehoiada H3077 the priest H3548 took H3947 W-VQY3MS a H259 MMS chest H727 , and bored H5344 a hole H2356 in the lid H1817 of it , and set H5414 W-VQQ3MS it beside H681 the altar H4196 D-NMS , on the right side H3225 as one H376 NMS cometh H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : and the priests H3548 that kept H8104 the door H5592 put H5414 therein H8033 ADV-3FS all H3605 NMS the money H3701 that was brought H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
10 And it was H1961 W-VPY3MS so , when they saw H7200 that H3588 CONJ there was much H7227 AMS money H3701 in the chest H727 , that the king H4428 D-NMS \'s scribe H5608 and the high H1419 D-AMS priest H3548 came up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and they put up in bags H6696 , and told H4487 the money H3701 that was found H4672 in the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
11 And they gave H5414 the money H3701 , being told H8505 , into H5921 PREP the hands H3027 of them that did H6213 the work H4399 , that had the oversight H6485 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : and they laid it out H3318 to the carpenters H2796 and builders H1129 , that wrought H6213 upon the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS ,
12 And to masons H1443 , and hewers H2672 of stone H68 , and to buy H7069 timber H6086 and hewed H4274 stone H68 to repair H2388 the breaches H919 of the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and for all H3605 WL-CMS that H834 RPRO was laid out H3318 VQY3MS for H5921 PREP the house H1004 D-NMS to repair H2394 it .
13 Howbeit H389 ADV there were not H3808 NADV made H6213 for the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS bowls H5592 of silver H3701 NMS , snuffers H4212 , basins H4219 , trumpets H2689 , any H3605 NMS vessels H3627 CMS of gold H2091 NMS , or vessels H3627 of silver H3701 NMS , of H4480 PREP the money H3701 that was brought H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS :
14 But H3588 CONJ they gave H5414 that to the workmen H6213 , and repaired H2388 therewith the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
15 Moreover they reckoned H2803 not H3808 W-NPAR with H854 PREP the men H376 , into H5921 PREP whose H834 RPRO hand H3027 they delivered H5414 the money H3701 to be bestowed H5414 L-VQFC on workmen H6213 : for H3588 CONJ they H1992 PPRO-3MP dealt H6213 faithfully H530 .
16 The trespass H817 money H3701 NMS and sin H2403 money H3701 W-CMS was not H3808 NADV brought H935 into the house H1004 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS : it was H1961 the priests H3548 .
17 Then H227 ADV Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS went up H5927 VQY3MS , and fought H3898 against H5921 PREP Gath H1661 , and took H3920 it : and Hazael H2371 set H7760 W-VQY3MS his face H6440 CMP-3MS to go up H5927 L-VQFC to H5921 PREP Jerusalem H3389 .
18 And Jehoash H3060 king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 took H3947 W-VQY3MS all H3605 NMS the hallowed things H6944 that H834 RPRO Jehoshaphat H3092 , and Jehoram H3088 , and Ahaziah H274 , his fathers H1 , kings H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , had dedicated H6942 , and his own hallowed things H6944 , and all H3605 NMS the gold H2091 that was found H4672 in the treasures H214 of the house H1004 W-NMS of the LORD H3068 EDS , and in the king H4428 NMS \'s house H1004 W-NMS , and sent H7971 W-VQY3MS it to Hazael H2371 king H4428 NMS of Syria H758 EMS : and he went away H5927 W-VHY3MS from M-PREP Jerusalem H3389 .
19 And the rest H3499 of the acts H1697 CMP of Joash H3101 , and all H3605 W-CMS that H834 RPRO he did H6213 VQQ3MS , are they H1992 PPRO-3MP not H3808 D-NPAR written H3789 in H5921 PREP the book H5612 CMS of the chronicles H1697 CMP of the kings H4428 of Judah H3063 ?
20 And his servants H5650 arose H6965 , and made H7194 a conspiracy H7195 , and slew H5221 W-VHY3MP Joash H3101 in the house H1004 CMS of Millo H4407 , which goeth down H3381 to Silla H5538 .
21 For Jozachar H3108 the son H1121 of Shimeath H8100 , and Jehozabad H3075 the son H1121 of Shomer H7763 , his servants H5650 , smote H5221 him , and he died H4191 ; and they buried H6912 him with H5973 PREP his fathers H1 in the city H5892 of David H1732 MMS : and Amaziah H558 his son H1121 reigned H4427 in his stead H8478 .
