Matthew 21:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 As they all approached Jerusalem, they came to Bethphage. It was on the Mount of Olives. Jesus sent out two disciples.
2 He said to them, "Go to the village ahead of you. As soon as you get there, you will find a donkey tied up. Her colt will be with her. Untie them and bring them to me.
3 If anyone says anything to you, say that the Lord needs them. The owner will send them right away."
4 This took place so that what was spoken through the prophet would come true. It says,
5 "Say to the city of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you. He is gentle and riding on a donkey. He is riding on a donkey's colt.' " --(Zechariah 9:9)
6 The disciples went and did what Jesus told them to do.
7 They brought the donkey and the colt. They placed their coats on them. Then Jesus sat on the coats.
8 A very large crowd spread their coats on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.
9 Some of the people went ahead of him, and some followed. They all shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!" --(Psalm 118:26) "Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up. The people asked, "Who is this?"
11 The crowds answered, "This is Jesus. He is the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."
12 Jesus entered the temple area. He began chasing out all those who were buying and selling there. He turned over the tables of the people who were exchanging money. He also turned over the benches of those who were selling doves.
13 He said to them, "It is written that the Lord said, 'My house will be called a house where people can pray.'--(Isaiah 56:7) But you are making it a 'den for robbers.' "--(Jeremiah 7:11)
14 Blind people and those who were disabled came to Jesus at the temple. There he healed them.
15 The chief priests and the teachers of the law saw the wonderful things he did. They also saw the children in the temple area shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" But when they saw all of this, they became angry.
16 "Do you hear what these children are saying?" they asked him. "Yes," replied Jesus. "Haven't you ever read about it in Scripture? It says, " 'You have made sure that children and infants praise you.' " --(Psalm 8:2)
17 Then Jesus left the people and went out of the city to Bethany. He spent the night there.
18 Early in the morning, Jesus was on his way back to Jerusalem. He was hungry.
19 He saw a fig tree by the road. He went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Right away the tree dried up.
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree dry up so quickly?" they asked.
21 Jesus replied, "What I'm about to tell you is true. You must have faith and not doubt. Then you can do what was done to the fig tree. And you can say to this mountain, 'Go and throw yourself into the sea.' It will be done.
22 If you believe, you will receive what you ask for when you pray."
23 Jesus entered the temple courtyard. While he was teaching there, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him. "By what authority are you doing these things?" they asked. "Who gave you this authority?"
24 Jesus replied, "I will also ask you one question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things.
25 Where did John's baptism come from? Was it from heaven? Or did it come from men?" They talked to each other about it. They said, "If we say, 'From heaven,' he will ask, 'Then why didn't you believe him?'
26 But what if we say, 'From men'? We are afraid of the people. Everyone believes that John was a prophet."
27 So they answered Jesus, "We don't know." Jesus said, "Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things either.
28 "What do you think about this? A man had two sons. He went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work today in the vineyard.'
29 " 'I will not,' the son answered. But later he changed his mind and went.
30 "Then the father went to the other son. He said the same thing. The son answered, 'I will, sir.' But he did not go.
31 "Which of the two sons did what his father wanted?" "The first," they answered. Jesus said to them, "What I'm about to tell you is true. Tax collectors and prostitutes will enter the kingdom of God ahead of you.
32 John came to show you the right way to live. And you did not believe him. But the tax collectors and the prostitutes did. You saw this. But even then you did not turn away from your sins and believe him.
33 "Listen to another story. A man who owned some land planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it. He dug a pit for a winepress in it. He also built a lookout tower. He rented the vineyard out to some farmers. Then he went away on a journey.
34 When harvest time approached, he sent his servants to the renters. He told the servants to collect his share of the fruit.
35 "But the renters grabbed his servants. They beat one of them. They killed another. They threw stones at the third to kill him.
36 Then the man sent other servants to the renters. He sent more than he did the first time. The renters treated them the same way.
37 "Last of all, he sent his son to them. 'They will respect my son,' he said.
38 "But the renters saw the son coming. They said to each other, 'This is the one who will receive all the owner's property someday. Come, let's kill him. Then everything will be ours.'
39 So they took him and threw him out of the vineyard. Then they killed him.
40 "When the owner of the vineyard comes back, what will he do to those renters?"
41 "He will destroy those evil people," they replied. "Then he will rent the vineyard out to other renters. They will give him his share of the crop at harvest time."
42 Jesus said to them, "Haven't you ever read what the Scriptures say, " 'The stone the builders didn't accept has become the most important stone of all. The Lord has done it. It is wonderful in our eyes'? --(Psalm 118:22,23)
43 "So here is what I tell you. The kingdom of God will be taken away from you. It will be given to people who will produce its fruit.
44 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces. But the stone will crush anyone it falls on."
45 The chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus' stories. They knew he was talking about them.
46 So they looked for a way to arrest him. But they were afraid of the crowd. The people believed that Jesus was a prophet.

2 Saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM unto them G846 P-DPM , Go G4198 V-AOS-2P into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASF village G2968 N-ASF over against G561 ADV you G5216 P-2GP , and G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV ye shall find G2147 V-FAI-2P an ass G3688 N-ASF tied G1210 V-RPP-ASF , and G2532 CONJ a colt G4454 N-ASM with G3326 PREP her G846 P-GSF : loose G3089 V-AAP-NPM them , and bring G71 V-2AAM-2P them unto me G3427 P-1DS .
3 And G2532 CONJ if G1437 COND any G5100 X-NSM man say G2036 V-2AAS-3S aught G5100 X-ASN unto you G5213 P-2DP , ye shall say G2046 V-FAI-2P , The G3588 T-NSM Lord G2962 N-NSM hath G2192 V-PAI-3S need G5532 N-ASF of them G846 P-GPM ; and G2532 CONJ straightway G2112 ADV he will send G649 V-PAI-3S them G846 P-APM .
4 All G3650 A-NSN this G5124 D-NSN was done G1096 V-2RAI-3S , that G2443 CONJ it G3588 T-NSN might be fulfilled G4137 V-APS-3S which was spoken G4483 V-APP-NSN by G1223 PREP the G3588 T-GSM prophet G4396 N-GSM , saying G3004 V-PAP-GSN ,
5 Tell G2036 V-2AAM-2P ye G3588 T-DSF the G3588 T-DSF daughter G2364 N-DSF of Zion G4622 N-PRI , Behold G2400 V-2AAM-2S , thy G3588 T-NSM king G935 N-NSM cometh G2064 V-PNI-3S unto thee G4671 P-2DS , meek G4239 A-NSM , and G2532 CONJ sitting G1910 V-RAP-NSM upon G1909 PREP an ass G3688 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ a colt G4454 N-ASM the foal G5207 N-ASM of an ass G5268 N-GSN .

7 And brought G71 V-2AAI-3P the G3588 T-ASF ass G3688 N-ASF , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-ASM colt G4454 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ put G2007 V-AAI-3P on G1883 ADV them G846 P-GPM their G3588 T-APN clothes G2440 N-APN , and G2532 CONJ they set G1940 V-AAI-3S him thereon G1883 ADV .
8 And G1161 CONJ a very great G4118 A-NSM multitude G3793 N-NSM spread G4766 V-AAI-3P their G3588 T-APN garments G2440 N-APN in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF ; others G243 A-NPM cut down G2875 V-IAI-3P branches G2798 N-APM from G575 PREP the G3588 T-GPN trees G1186 N-GPN , and G2532 CONJ strewed G4766 V-IAI-3P them in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSF way G3598 N-DSF .
9 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM multitudes G3793 N-NPM that went before G4254 V-PAP-NPM , and G2532 CONJ thatfollowed G190 V-PAP-NPM , cried G2896 V-IAI-3P , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , Hosanna G5614 HEB to the G3588 T-DSM son G5207 N-DSM of David G1138 N-PRI : Blessed G2127 V-RPP-NSM is he that cometh G2064 V-PNP-NSM in G1722 PREP the name G3686 N-DSN of the Lord G2962 N-GSM ; Hosanna G5614 HEB in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DPN highest G5310 A-DPN .
10 And G2532 CONJ when he G846 P-GSM was come G1525 V-2AAP-GSM into G1519 PREP Jerusalem G2414 N-ASF , all G3956 A-NSF the G3588 T-NSF city G4172 N-NSF was moved G4579 V-API-3S , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSF , Who G5101 I-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S this G3778 D-NSM ?
11 And G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM multitude G3793 N-NPM said G3004 V-IAI-3P , This G3778 D-NSM is G2076 V-PXI-3S Jesus G2424 N-NSM the G3588 T-NSM prophet G4396 N-NSM of G575 PREP Nazareth G3478 N-PRI of Galilee G1056 N-GSF .
12 And G2532 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM went G1525 V-2AAI-3S into G1519 PREP the G3588 T-ASN temple G2411 N-ASN of God G2316 N-GSM , and G2532 CONJ cast out G1544 V-2AAI-3S all G3956 A-APM them that sold G4453 V-PAP-APM and G2532 CONJ bought G59 V-PAP-APM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ overthrew G2690 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-APF tables G5132 N-APF of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM moneychangers G2855 N-GPM , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APF seats G2515 N-APF of G3588 T-APF them G3588 T-APF that G3588 T-APF sold G4453 V-PAP-GPM doves G4058 N-APF ,
13 And G2532 CONJ said G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , It is written G1125 V-RPI-3S , My G3588 T-NSM house G3624 N-NSM shall be called G2564 V-FPI-3S the house G3624 N-NSM of prayer G4335 N-GSF ; but G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP have made G4160 V-AAI-2P it G846 P-ASM a den G4693 N-ASN of thieves G3027 N-GPM .
14 And G2532 CONJ the blind G5185 A-NPM and G2532 CONJ the lame G5560 A-NPM came G4334 V-AAI-3P to him G846 P-DSM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN ; and G2532 CONJ he healed G2323 V-AAI-3S them G846 P-APM .
15 And G1161 CONJ when the G3588 T-NPM chief priests G749 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ scribes G1122 N-NPM saw G1492 V-2AAP-NPM the G3588 T-APN wonderful things G2297 A-APN that G3739 R-APN he did G4160 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-APM children G3816 N-APM crying G2896 V-PAP-APM in G1722 PREP the G3588 T-DSN temple G2411 N-DSN , and G2532 CONJ saying G3004 V-PAP-APM , Hosanna G5614 HEB to the G3588 T-DSM son G5207 N-DSM of David G1138 N-PRI ; they were sore displeased G23 V-AAI-3P ,

24 And G1161 CONJ Jesus G2424 N-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , I also G2504 P-1NS-C will ask G2065 V-FAI-1S you G5209 P-2AP one G1520 A-ASM thing G3056 N-ASM , which G3739 R-ASM if G1437 COND ye tell G2036 V-2AAS-2P me G3427 P-1DS , I in likewise G2504 P-1NS-C will tell G2046 V-FAI-1S you G5213 P-2DP by G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF authority G1849 N-DSF I do G4160 V-PAI-1S these things G5023 D-APN .
25 The G3588 T-NSN baptism G908 N-NSN of John G2491 N-GSM , whence G4159 ADV-I was G2258 V-IXI-3S it ? from G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM , or G2228 PRT of G3588 T-NPM men ? And G1161 CONJ they G3588 T-NPM reasoned G1260 V-INI-3P with G3844 PREP themselves G1438 F-3DPM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NPM , If G1437 COND we shall say G2036 V-2AAS-1P , From G1537 PREP heaven G3772 N-GSM ; he will say G2046 V-FAI-3S unto us G2254 P-1DP , Why G1302 did ye not G3756 PRT-N then G3767 CONJ believe G4100 V-AAI-2P him G846 P-DSM ?
26 But G1161 CONJ if G1437 COND we shall say G2036 V-2AAS-1P , Of G1537 PREP men G444 N-GPM ; we fear G5399 V-PNI-1P the G3588 T-ASM people G3793 N-ASM ; for G1063 CONJ all G3956 A-NPM hold G2192 V-PAI-3P John G2491 N-ASM as G5613 ADV a prophet G4396 N-ASM .
27 And G2532 CONJ they G3588 T-DSM answered G611 V-AOP-NPM Jesus G2424 N-DSM , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3P , We cannot tell G1492 V-RAI-1P . And G2532 CONJ he G846 P-DPM said G5346 V-IXI-3S unto them G846 P-NSM , Neither G3761 ADV tell G3004 V-PAI-1S I G1473 P-1NS you G5213 P-2DP by G1722 PREP what G4169 I-DSF authority G1849 N-DSF I do G4160 V-PAI-1S these things G5023 D-APN .
28 But G1161 CONJ what G5101 I-ASN think G1380 V-PAI-3S ye G5213 P-2DP ? A certain man G444 N-NSM had G2192 V-IAI-3S two G1417 A-NUI sons G5043 N-APN ; and G2532 CONJ he came G4334 V-2AAP-NSM to the G3588 T-DSN first G4413 A-DSN , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , Son G5043 N-VSN , go G5217 V-PAM-2S work G2038 V-PNM-2S today G4594 ADV in G1722 PREP my G3588 T-DSM vineyard G290 N-DSM .
29 He G3588 T-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , I will G2309 V-PAI-1S not G3756 PRT-N : but G1161 CONJ afterward G5305 ADV he repented G3338 V-AOP-NSM , and went G565 V-2AAI-3S .
30 And G2532 CONJ he came G4334 V-2AAP-NSM to the G3588 T-DSN second G1208 A-DSN , and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S likewise G5615 ADV . And G1161 CONJ he G3588 T-NSM answered G611 V-AOP-NSM and said G2036 V-2AAI-3S , I G1473 P-1NS go , sir G2962 N-VSM : and G2532 CONJ went G565 V-2AAI-3S not G3756 PRT-N .
31 Whether G5101 I-NSM of G1537 PREP them G3588 T-GPM twain G1417 A-NUI did G4160 V-AAI-3S the G3588 T-ASN will G2307 N-ASN of his G3588 T-GSM father ? They G3962 N-GSM say G3004 V-PAI-3P unto him G846 P-DSM , The G3588 T-NSM first G4413 A-NSM . Jesus G2424 N-NSM saith G3004 V-PAI-3S unto them G846 P-DPM , Verily G281 HEB I say G3004 V-PAI-1S unto you G5213 P-2DP , That G3754 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM publicans G5057 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF harlots G4204 N-NPF go into the kingdom of God before G4254 V-PAI-3P you G5209 P-2AP .
32 For G1063 CONJ John G2491 N-NSM came G2064 V-2AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP you G5209 P-2AP in G1722 PREP the way G3598 N-DSF of righteousness G1343 N-GSF , and G2532 CONJ ye believed G4100 V-AAI-2P him G846 P-DSM not G3756 PRT-N ; but G1161 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM publicans G5057 N-NPM and G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPF harlots G4204 N-NPF believed G4100 V-AAI-3P him G846 P-DSM : and G1161 CONJ ye G5210 P-2NP , when ye had seen G1492 V-2AAP-NPM it , repented G3338 V-AOI-2P not G3756 PRT-N afterward G5305 ADV , that ye G3588 T-GSM might believe G4100 V-AAN him G846 P-DSM .
33 Hear G191 V-AAM-2P another G243 A-ASF parable G3850 N-ASF : There was G2258 V-IXI-3S a certain G5100 X-NSM householder G3617 N-NSM , which G3748 R-NSM planted G5452 V-AAI-3S a vineyard G290 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ hedged it round about G4060 V-AAI-3S , and G2532 CONJ digged G3736 V-AAI-3S a winepress G3025 N-ASF in G1722 PREP it G846 P-DSM , and G2532 CONJ built G3618 V-AAI-3S a tower G4444 N-ASM , and G2532 CONJ let it out G1554 V-2AMI-3S to husbandmen G1092 N-DPM , and G2532 CONJ went into a far country G589 V-AAI-3S :
34 And G1161 CONJ when G3753 ADV the G3588 T-NSM time G2540 N-NSM of G3588 T-GPM the G3588 T-GPM fruit G2590 N-GPM drew near G1448 V-AAI-3S , he sent G649 V-AAI-3S his G3588 T-APM servants G1401 N-APM to G4314 PREP the G3588 T-APM husbandmen G1092 N-APM , that they might receive G2983 V-2AAN the G3588 T-APM fruits G2590 N-APM of it G846 P-GSM .
35 And G2532 CONJ the G3588 T-NPM husbandmen G1092 N-NPM took G2983 V-2AAP-NPM his G3588 T-APM servants G1401 N-APM , and beat G1194 V-AAI-3P one G3739 R-ASM , and G1161 CONJ killed G615 V-AAI-3P another G3739 R-ASM , and G1161 CONJ stoned G3036 V-API-3P another G3739 R-ASM .
36 Again G3825 ADV , he sent G649 V-AAI-3S other G243 A-APM servants G1401 N-APM more G4119 A-APM-C than the G3588 T-GPM first G4413 A-GPM : and G2532 CONJ they did G4160 V-AAI-3P unto them G846 P-DPM likewise G5615 ADV .
37 But G1161 CONJ last G5305 ADV of all he sent G649 V-AAI-3S unto G4314 PREP them G846 P-APM his G3588 T-ASM son G5207 N-ASM , saying G3004 V-PAP-NSM , They will reverence G1788 V-2FPI-3P my G3588 T-ASM son G5207 N-ASM .
