Judges 13:1 (NIRV) New International Reader's Version

1 Once again the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord handed them over to the Philistines for 40 years.
2 A certain man from Zorah was named Manoah. He was from the tribe of Dan. Manoah had a wife who wasn't able to have children.
3 The angel of the Lord appeared to Manoah's wife. He said, "You are not able to have children. But you are going to become pregnant. You will have a baby boy.
4 Make sure you do not drink any kind of wine. Also make sure you do not eat anything that is 'unclean.'
5 "You will become pregnant. You will have a son. He must not use a razor on his head. He must not cut his hair. That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will be set apart to God from the day he is born. He will begin to save Israel from the power of the Philistines."
6 Then the woman went to her husband. She told him, "A man of God came to me. He looked like an angel of God. His appearance was so amazing that it filled me with great wonder. I didn't ask him where he came from. And he didn't tell me his name.
7 "But he said to me, 'You will become pregnant. You will have a son. So do not drink any kind of wine. Do not eat anything that is "unclean." That is because the boy will be a Nazirite. He will belong to God in a special way from the day he is born until the day he dies.' "
8 Then Manoah prayed to the Lord. He said, "Lord, I beg you to let the man of God you sent to us come again. He told us we would have a son. We want the man of God to teach us how to bring up the boy."
9 God heard Manoah. And the angel of God came again to the woman. He came while she was out in the field. But her husband Manoah wasn't with her.
10 The woman hurried to her husband. She told him, "He's here! The man who appeared to me the other day is here!"
11 Manoah got up and followed his wife. When he came to the man, he spoke to him. He said, "Are you the one who talked to my wife?" "I am," he replied.
12 So Manoah asked him, "What will happen when your words come true? What rules should we follow for the boy's life and work?"
13 The angel of the Lord answered him. He said, "Your wife must do everything I have told her to do.
14 She must not eat anything that comes from grapevines. She must not drink any kind of wine. She must not eat anything that is 'unclean.' She must do everything I have commanded her to do."
15 Manoah spoke to the angel of the Lord. He said, "We would like you to stay and eat. We want to prepare a young goat for you."
16 The angel of the Lord replied, "Even if I stay, I will not eat any of your food. But if you still want to prepare a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord." Manoah didn't realize it was the angel of the Lord.
17 Then Manoah asked the angel of the Lord a question. "What is your name?" he said. "We want to honor you when your word comes true."
18 The angel replied, "Why are you asking me what my name is? You would not be able to understand it."
19 Manoah got a young goat. He brought it together with the grain offering. He sacrificed it on a rock to the Lord. Then the Lord did an amazing thing. It happened while Manoah and his wife were watching.
20 A flame blazed up from the altar toward heaven. The angel of the Lord rose up in the flame. When Manoah and his wife saw it, they fell with their faces to the ground.
21 The angel of the Lord didn't show himself again to Manoah and his wife. Then Manoah realized it was the angel of the Lord.
22 "We're going to die!" he said to his wife. "We've seen God!"
23 But his wife answered, "The Lord doesn't want to kill us. If he did, he wouldn't have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from us. He wouldn't have shown us all of those things. He wouldn't have told us we're going to have a son."
24 Later, the woman had a baby boy. She named him Samson. As he grew up, the Lord blessed him.
25 The Spirit of the Lord began to work in his life. It happened while he was in Mahaneh Dan. It's between Zorah and Eshtaol.
1 And the children H1121 of Israel H3478 did H6213 L-VQFC evil H7451 again H3254 in the sight H5869 B-CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS ; and the LORD H3068 EDS delivered H5414 them into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the Philistines H6430 TMS forty H705 MMP years H8141 NFS .
2 And there was H1961 W-VQY3MS a certain H259 MMS man H376 NMS of Zorah H6681 , of the family H4940 M-CFS of the Danites H1839 , whose name H8034 was Manoah H4495 ; and his wife H802 W-CFS-3MS was barren H6135 AFS , and bore H3205 not H3808 W-NPAR .
3 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS appeared H7200 W-VNY3MS unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP her , Behold H2009 IJEC now H4994 IJEC , thou H859 art barren H6135 AFS , and bearest H3205 not H3808 W-NPAR : but thou shalt conceive H2029 , and bear H3205 a son H1121 NMS .
4 Now H6258 W-ADV therefore beware H8104 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , and drink H8354 not H408 W-NPAR wine H3196 NMS nor strong drink H7941 , and eat H398 not H408 W-NPAR any H3605 NMS unclean H2931 thing :
5 For H3588 CONJ , lo H2009 , thou shalt conceive H2029 , and bear H3205 a son H1121 NMS ; and no H3808 NADV razor H4177 shall come H5927 VQY3MS on H5921 PREP his head H7218 CMS-3MS : for H3588 CONJ the child H5288 shall be H1961 VQY3MS a Nazarite H5139 unto God H430 EDP from H4480 PREP the womb H990 : and he H1931 W-PPRO-3MS shall begin H2490 to deliver H3467 Israel H3478 out of the hand H3027 M-GFS of the Philistines H6430 .
6 Then the woman H802 D-NFS came H935 W-VQY3FS and told H559 W-VQY3FS her husband H376 NMS , saying H559 L-VQFC , A man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP came H935 VQPMS unto H413 PREP-1MS me , and his countenance H4758 was like the countenance H4758 of an angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP , very H3966 ADV terrible H3372 VNCMS : but I asked H7592 him not H3808 W-NPAR whence H335 he H1931 PPRO-3MS was , neither H3808 W-NPAR told H5046 VHQ3MS he me his name H8034 CMS-3MS :
7 But he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto me , Behold H2009 , thou shalt conceive H2029 , and bear H3205 a son H1121 NMS ; and now H6258 W-ADV drink H8354 no H408 NPAR wine H3196 NMS nor strong drink H7941 , neither H408 ADV eat H398 any H3605 NMS unclean H2932 thing : for H3588 CONJ the child H5288 shall be H1961 VQY3MS a Nazarite H5139 to God H430 EDP from H4480 PREP the womb H990 to H5704 PREP the day H3117 NMS of his death H4194 .
8 Then Manoah H4495 entreated H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , O H994 my Lord H136 , let the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP which H834 RPRO thou didst send H7971 come H935 VQY3MS again H5750 ADV unto H413 PREP us , and teach H3384 us what H4100 IGAT we shall do H6213 VQY1MP unto the child H5288 that shall be born H3205 .
9 And God H430 D-EDP hearkened H8085 to the voice H6963 B-NMS of Manoah H4495 ; and the angel H4397 of God H430 D-EDP came H935 W-VQY3MS again H5750 ADV unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS as she H1931 sat H3427 in the field H7704 B-NMS : but Manoah H4495 her husband H376 was not H369 NPAR with H5973 her .
10 And the woman H802 made haste H4116 , and ran H7323 , and showed H5046 her husband H376 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP-3MS him , Behold H2009 IJEC , the man H376 D-NMS hath appeared H7200 unto H413 PREP-1MS me , that H834 RPRO came H935 VQPMS unto H413 me the other day H3117 .
11 And Manoah H4495 arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and went H1980 W-VQY3MS after H310 PREP his wife H802 CFS-3MS , and came H935 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP the man H376 D-NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Art thou H859 the man H376 D-NMS that H834 RPRO spakest H1696 unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS ? And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , I H589 PPRO-1MS am .
12 And Manoah H4495 said H559 W-VQY3MS , Now H6258 ADV let thy words H1697 come to pass H935 VQY3MS . How H4100 IPRO shall we order H1961 the child H5288 , and how shall we do H4639 unto him ?
13 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Manoah H4495 , Of all H3605 M-CMS that H834 RPRO I said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the woman H802 D-NFS let her beware H8104 .
14 She may not H3808 NADV eat H398 VQY2MS of any H3605 NMS thing that H834 RPRO cometh H3318 VQY3MS of the vine H1612 , neither H408 NPAR let her drink H8354 wine H3196 D-NMS or strong drink H7941 , nor H408 NPAR eat H398 VQY2MS any H3605 NMS unclean H2932 thing : all H3605 NMS that H834 RPRO I commanded H6680 her let her observe H8104 VQY2MS .
15 And Manoah H4495 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , let us detain H6113 thee , until we shall have made ready H6213 a kid H1423 for H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee .
16 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP Manoah H4495 , Though H518 PART thou detain H6113 me , I will not H3808 NADV eat H398 of thy bread H3899 : and if H518 PART thou wilt offer H6213 VQY2MS a burnt offering H5930 , thou must offer H5927 it unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS . For H3588 CONJ Manoah H4495 knew H3045 VQQ3MS not H3808 NADV that H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS .
17 And Manoah H4495 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS , What H4310 IPRO is thy name H8034 CMS-2MS , that when H3588 CONJ thy sayings H1697 come to pass H935 VQY3MS we may do thee honor H3513 ?
18 And the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Why H4100 L-IPRO askest H7592 thou thus H2088 PMS after my name H8034 , seeing it H1931 W-PPRO-3MS is secret H6383 ?
19 So Manoah H4495 took H3947 W-VQY3MS a kid H1423 with H854 a meat offering H4503 , and offered H5927 W-VHY3MS it upon H5921 PREP a rock H6697 unto the LORD H3068 L-EDS : and the angel did H6213 L-VQFC wondrously H6381 ; and Manoah H4495 and his wife H802 W-CFS-3MS looked on H7200 VQPMP .
20 For it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the flame H3851 went up H5927 toward heaven H8064 from off H5921 M-PREP the altar H4196 D-NMS , that the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS ascended H5927 W-VHY3MS in the flame H3851 of the altar H4196 D-NMS . And Manoah H4495 and his wife H802 W-CFS-3MS looked on H7200 it , and fell H5307 W-VQY3MP on H5921 M-PREP their faces H6440 CMP-3MP to the ground H776 NFS-3FS .
21 But the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS did no H3808 W-NPAR more H3254 appear H7200 to H413 PREP Manoah H4495 and to H413 PREP his wife H802 CFS-3MS . Then H227 ADV Manoah H4495 knew H3045 VQQ3MS that H3588 CONJ he H1931 PPRO-3MS was an angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 EDS .
22 And Manoah H4495 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his wife H802 CFS-3MS , We shall surely die H4191 VQFA , because H3588 CONJ we have seen H7200 God H430 EDP .
23 But his wife H802 CFS-3MS said H559 W-VQY3FS unto him , If H3863 CONJ the LORD H3068 EDS were pleased H2654 to kill H4191 us , he would not H3808 ADV have received H3947 VQQ3MS a burnt offering H5930 and a meat offering H4503 at our hands H3027 , neither H3808 W-NADV would he have showed H7200 us all H3605 NMS these H428 PMP things , nor H3808 NADV would as at this time H6256 have told H8085 us such things as these H2063 .
24 And the woman H802 D-NFS bore H3205 W-VQY3FS a son H1121 NMS , and called H7121 W-VQY2MS his name H8034 CMS-3MS Samson H8123 : and the child H5288 grew H1431 , and the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS blessed H1288 him .
25 And the Spirit H7307 NFS of the LORD H3068 EDS began H2490 to move H6470 him at times in the camp H4264 of Dan H1835 between H996 PREP Zorah H6881 and Eshtaol H847 .
